Hochiki Asia Pacific launches new Smoke Detector

Hochiki Asia Pacific have just announced the release of the SOC-E-IS, the new Intrinsically Safe Conventional Smoke Detector to replace the SLR-E-IS model. This new replacement model reportedly maintains the same functionality and classifications for hazardous environments and uses the same I.S. mounting base, YBN-R/4IS.

The SOC-E-IS has been developed with built-in technology that ensures its operation at the optimum sensitivity and reducing the potential false alarms. By using the same Automatic Sensitivity Window Verification (ASWV) technology, the SOC-E-IS will continue to adjust its sensitivity threshold to compensate contamination inside the optical chamber and provides visual notification when maintenance is required.

According to the manufacturer, the use of this new built-in technology makes the SOC-E-IS more reliable and more superior than its predecessor, the SLR-E-IS.

The SOC-E-IS is a Photoelectric Smoke Detector, which is fully compatible with the majority of existing Conventional systems. The SOC-E-IS incorporates Hochiki’s unique High-Performance photoelectric smoke chamber removing the need to use Ionisation Detectors in the majority of applications.

AWG, Godiva develop disinfectant system for public spaces

With the ongoing battle against COVID-19, fire departments are challenged with preventing the spread of the virus by cleaning and disinfecting public spaces. To aid fire departments, IDEX Fire & Safety businesses this month released a new multitool sprayer and cleaning agent induction system.

The internationally diverse IDEX team from AWG in Germany and GODIVA in England joined forces using Microsoft Teams to design and test a reliable, low-cost system that connects to existing fire engines. With creativity and expertise from across the organisation, team members quickly innovated and developed the product in just two months

Godiva provided expertise on the pump, while AWG provided expertise on the eductor pump and the nozzle. The team also asked a biochemist at ThinXXS in Germany to help understand the chemical requirements for the common cleaning agents.

This combination of IDEX expertise led to the rapid development of a system optimised for this solution.

Fireco: reducing the transfer of COVID-19 from door handles

Getac deliver technology upgrade to Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team

Getac, a rugged mobile computing manufacturer, has come to the aid of the Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team (CBMRT) with the donation of powerful rugged mobile devices, along with accompanying accessories from its partners.  The new solutions replace the CBMRT’s original IT equipment – which was lost during a devastating fire at its base of operations in Merthyr Tydfil – and provide a significant technology upgrade in the process.

The CBMRT is a voluntary organisation covering the central Brecon Beacons, including South Wales’ highest mountain, Pen y Fan, Cribyn and Corn Du, as well as the Ystradfellte waterfalls. It responds to over 120 incidents a year, with rescues often taking place in extremely challenging conditions. Many areas of the national park are also very remote, which can make effective coordination between rescue teams difficult without the right equipment.

The ZX70 fully rugged Android tablets and F110 fully rugged Windows tablets donated by Getac both feature a host of innovative technologies that greatly enhance CBMRT capabilities during time sensitive operations. Dafo Li-IonFire tackles electric/hybrid vehicle fire protection

As there is a global transition to renewable fuels, there is an increasing demand for electric or hybrid vehicles (EV and HEV). However, knowledge is limited about the new fire risks associated with vehicles having these new energy carriers

Dafo Vehicle Fire Protection has helped build a fire protection system tailored for operations using electric or hybrid vehicles as part of an EU-funded program.

In partnership with RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, Dafo explored different techniques to detect potential battery failure, as early as possible, and take immediate action to stop, or delay, a potentially hazardous situation.

The partners studied the various fire risks related to batteries, including specific risks when charging, and procedures for handling electric vehicles and batteries after a crash. They also investigated to what extent fixed and integrated fire suppression systems, which are widely used to protect combustion engine compartments on heavy vehicles, can be applied to vehicles powered by lithium-ion batteries, and how they should be designed.

“With the rapid introduction of electric and hybrid electric vehicles in public transport, there are new challenges because they present totally different risk scenarios,” Anders Gulliksson of Dafo Vehicle (pictured), Coordinator of the EU-funded Li-IonFire (Automated e-vehicle Lithium Ion Battery Early Warning and Fire Suppression System) project, said.

Through extensive testing, the Li-IonFire team better understood how a breakdown occurs within the battery and how it can be detected.

“If a system is activated at this early stage, the battery can be ‘brought back’ to a safe state, without the fire developing further,” Gulliksson explained.

“The tests have also shown that even with a late deployment of the fire suppression system, there’s a possibility of delaying the battery reaching a critical state, meaning that the chance of safe evacuation is very high.”

With proper detection and system activation, the hazardous scenario can be reversed and potentially even stopped entirely, according to Dafo.

The project team has, it says, successfully validated and demonstrated a highly innovative fire protection system for electric and hybrid electric vehicles. The new system provides an early fire warning system, and spot cooling to prevent thermal runaway while localising and suppressing fire.

The system was officially unveiled in 2019 and has generated tremendous interest from both end users and vehicle manufacturers, according to Dafo.

“Li-IonFire delivers to the market a product that didn’t exist until now; a system that can offer real protection against battery fires, using a new suppression agent, Forrex EV™, which is specifically developed for these applications,” concluded Gulliksson.

“Li-IonFire will significantly boost the safety of operators and the protection of valuable assets.”

It will be available from September 1, 2020, the company says.
