Global customer growth reported in fire hazmat monitoring

Blackline Safety has reported a 175 percent increase in the number of fire hazmat customers using its connected personal and area monitors worldwide over the past year.

According to Blackline Safety, customer numbers grew from 127 to 350 over the last 12 months.

The company stated that thousands of users are now operating its monitoring solutions across North America, Europe, the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand.

The company attributed this growth to increased demand among fire and hazmat teams for tools that provide enhanced monitoring and real-time data access during high-risk operations.

Blackline stated that its cloud-connected devices allow remote tracking of personnel safety conditions and support faster response decisions.

NewEXO 8 Gamma monitors set for initial shipment

Blackline Safety has announced that the first shipments of its EXO 8 Gamma area monitors will begin this month.

The monitor is capable of detecting gamma radiation in addition to up to eight gases simultaneously.

According to Blackline, EXO 8 is the only portable area monitor with direct-to-cloud capability and simultaneous gas and gamma detection features.

Doug Mayer, Fire Hazmat Business Development Specialist at Blackline Safety, said: “EXO 8’s gamma detection capability is a game-changer for fire and hazmat teams — not only in emergency response, but also in public event monitoring.”

Mayer added: “From gas leaks and chemical spill incidents of all kinds, and now gamma radiation, we’ve reimagined safety solutions to help responders deploy equipment faster, get more gas exposure information, and share data for real-time visibility.”

Fire teams adopt wider range of connected safety tools

In addition to the EXO 8 Gamma, Blackline Safety reported ongoing uptake of its broader range of connected safety technologies by fire-hazmat teams.

These include G7 personal gas detectors featuring cellular and satellite connectivity, two-way voice communication, fall and no-motion alerts, and automatic data logging.

The G6 single gas detector, offering real-time connectivity and emergency SOS functions, is also in use.

Fire departments are also using Blackline Live, the company’s cloud-based platform that provides real-time information on personnel location, gas exposures and device status from any internet-connected device.

MSA Cairns helmet giveaway for US volunteer firefighters open through 2025

MSA Cairns and NVFC launch 2025 fire helmet giveaway programme

The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) has reported that MSA Safety is continuing its collaboration with the organisation by offering four MSA Cairns 1836 Fire Helmets to active volunteer firefighters in the United States during 2025.

NVFC members can now enter the first of four giveaway periods, which runs until 30 April.

Additional entry windows are planned for June, August and November.

To qualify, participants must be active volunteer firefighters in the United States and members of the NVFC.

Only one entry is permitted per member during each giveaway period.

Recipients will be randomly selected following each entry window.

Helmet design focused on cleanability, comfort and face protection

The MSA Cairns 1836 Fire Helmet includes a range of features intended to meet operational needs of today’s fire service.

The helmet includes a low ride height, customisable fit and an expanded pivoting ratchet system designed to fit 95% of firefighters.

It can also be disassembled without tools, enabling easier cleaning and inspection.

It also includes a Defender Visor designed to deploy over various face sizes and eyewear.

It stows inside the helmet and can be operated while wearing gloves.

Additional protective features and standards compliance

According to the NVFC, the helmet includes MSA’s Shell Release System (SRS), which is designed to maintain head protection even if the helmet separates during an incident.

The helmet is compliant with NFPA 1971 standards for structural firefighting.

It is available in black, red, white and yellow variants.

Teledyne FLIR has reported that Sentera Sensors and Drones has joined the Thermal by FLIR programme.

The US-based manufacturer is integrating FLIR Boson thermal camera modules into its 6X Thermal Series drone payload.

The integration provides the Sentera platform with radiometric thermal imaging, alongside existing multispectral and RGB sensors.

The updated system supports data collection for a range of uses including fire detection, agriculture and industrial inspections.

According to Teledyne FLIR, the addition of Boson modules enhances mapping accuracy by providing radiometric temperature data at the pixel level.

Capabilities of the new 6X Thermal Series payload

The Sentera 6X Thermal Series includes the 6X Thermal and 6X Thermal Pro models.

Both models feature either the FLIR Boson 640R or 320R thermal imagers.

Each payload is also equipped with four synchronised 3.2MP monochrome imagers and a 20MP RGB sensor.

The system is NDAA-compliant and designed to integrate with various drone platforms used in outdoor and industrial settings.

Use cases highlighted by the manufacturer include water stress monitoring, evaporation analysis and infrastructure inspections.

The new Global Core coatings include an inorganic zinc primer, epoxy primer, epoxy intermediate coat and urethane topcoat.

Fire helmets turned into art for auction, funding Fire Aid’s international programmes

A group of 20 artists from across the UK have customised decommissioned fire helmets to raise funds for Fire Aid.

As reported by Fire Aid, the initiative features helmets that were originally manufactured by MSA and have been retired from service.

The items were repurposed as art pieces and will be sold through a public auction launched on 26 March 2025 and closes on 10 April.

Each was given a helmet and full creative control to produce a one-off artwork.

New insulation system meets fire safety rules for buildings over 11 metres

Wetherby Wall Systems has announced the launch of SOQEL A2, a below damp-proof course (DPC) external wall insulation (EWI) system designed to meet UK fire safety standards.

As reported by Wetherby Wall Systems, SOQEL A2 is the first fully fire-tested system designed for below DPC applications and meets the A2-s1,d0 fire classification.

This meets current UK Building Regulations for materials used in buildings over 11 metres in height.

The system became available on 17 March 2025 and is intended to offer contractors, architects and specifiers a compliant and durable alternative to traditional below DPC solutions.

Designed for high-risk areas with foot traffic and moisture exposure

SOQEL A2 is intended for use in base areas of external wall insulation systems, including balconies, plant rooms and walkways.

The system features Coverrock x-2 pre-coated insulation, which is bonded to protect the A1-rated stone wool core during application.

This design is aimed at withstanding impact and moisture exposure in high-risk areas.

It also incorporates Heck K+A SL coating and Heck CER Mesh.

According to the company, this combination is designed to improve impact resistance and durability in environments exposed to weather and pedestrian activity.

Appearance designed to match wider façade systems

Wetherby Wall Systems stated that the SOQEL A2 system integrates with existing façade systems to avoid visual disruption.

The inclusion of Heck 4S Silicone Render provides a seamless finish intended to match the surrounding insulated façade.

This differs from traditional below DPC treatments, such as bitumen paint, which can contrast with the building’s appearance.

The system is positioned as a functional and aesthetic solution for areas where performance and appearance both need to be considered.

Joint development with HECK in Germany

Wetherby Wall Systems developed the SOQEL A2 system in collaboration with HECK, part of the ROCKWOOL Group.

Fit for purpose, fit for duty, with Fire-Dex

Todd Herring, Vice President of Product Innovation and Strategy at Fire-Dex, discusses how alternative PPE helps firefighters stay safer, reduce fatigue and extend turnout gear lifespan 

There’s no blueprint for fighting wildfires, much less the countless other emergencies firefighters must respond to. Recently, we’ve witnessed how quickly California’s Santa Ana winds can turn a small blaze into a raging inferno. Conditions and circumstances change in an instant—fires suddenly explode in size, while rescue missions can stretch for hours and miles, and firefighters must adapt on the fly. 

Simply put, daily workloads have no quick in and out or predictability. Responders must be ready to endure exhausting shifts, sometimes for days at a time, haul heavy gear over rugged terrain, or manage all the unknowns that may accompany a motor vehicle accident (MVA). 

In fact, NFPA statistics show that all firefighters are taking more calls than ever, including hazardous materials and hazardous conditions.

That’s why PPE manufacturers like Fire-Dex are designing gear to help ease stress on the fireground and beyond. Advances in material science, smarter designs and a changing philosophy are creating the next generation of apparel that’s designed to work with—not against—first responders and keep them in the fight longer. 

Rethinking PPE  

For a long time, many firefighters have worn the same PPE for every call. That usually means full turnouts for everything from a structural fire to an MVA in the July sun. But increasingly, research is revealing the downside of this thinking, making way for an approach that calls for the right gear for the right call.  

The shift is long overdue. While structural fire incidents have dropped significantly over the past 40 years, EMS calls have surged by 421%, and all other calls have nearly tripled according to the NFPA. Yet firefighters are still expected to wear turnouts for non-fire emergencies where no thermal protection is needed.  

Turnouts are great when you need them—but wearing them all day? That’s just added weight and stress on your body. Heat stress and overexertion are the top causes of firefighter line-of-duty-deaths (LODDs), and sometimes, lighter gear is the smarter choice.

Alternative PPE provides the right level of protection for most calls while preventing unnecessary fatigue and keeping structural gear fresh for when it’s truly needed. 

There’s also the issue of contamination. Firefighters don’t just fight fires—they bring part of them back. Moving between the scene, the truck, and the station in the same gear means contaminants can come along for the ride.

Studies show that air pollution inside fire stations poses significant risks, especially in living quarters and engine bays where gear and equipment are stored.

Pollutants can also concentrate inside fire trucks. Alternative PPE, as an option for non-fire calls, can help mitigate these risks by reducing the likelihood of cross-contamination. 

The alternative PPE advantage 

Not all PPE is created equal—especially when it comes to alternative gear. It’s not just about making something lighter; it has to be built to perform. Firefighters don’t just face one type of hazard. Even on non-fire calls, there’s still heat, abrasion and unexpected risks.  

That’s where strategic material selection comes in. The best alternative PPE doesn’t overload firefighters with unnecessary bulk, but it also doesn’t skimp on protection where it’s needed.

It’s a delicate balance: Use materials that provide the right protection for the right call, without adding extra bulk that weighs you down. Without the need for the heaviest materials, firefighters can choose PPE that breathes better and lets cool air circulate around the body. 

Regulating core body temperature is essential for reducing heat stress and fatigue, both of which can significantly impact a person’s cognitive function and reaction time. When body temperature rises, the body naturally cools itself through evaporative heat loss—but traditional turnout gear can trap sweat, preventing proper heat dissipation. 

One suit, many uses 

Not every emergency is a structure fire, and not every call should require hauling around full turnouts. In response, the market offers many multipurpose options like Fire-Dex’s TECGEN51 Multipurpose PPE. As a two-piece or coverall, it’s dual-certified to NFPA 1951 (technical rescue) and 1977 (wildland performance) for non-fire calls like MVAs, electrical issues and search and rescue missions—it’s lightweight, breathable and built to move. 

The reason is the TECGEN fiber, an inherently flame-resistant material with a high-density carbon shell and a flexible core. That combination provides increased durability over typical carbon-based fibers.

This technology enables the development of fabrics that simultaneously offer high levels of thermal protection (TPP) and breathability (THL). That’s to say, there’s less trade-off between the two, making a multipurpose garment more viable and effective than ever. 

Most people don’t think twice about sweat, but firefighters don’t have that luxury. Battalion Chief Andy Starnes of Insight Training warns that wearing turnouts unnecessarily—especially in hot, humid conditions—can cause serious issues: “It makes managing moisture critical because drenched gear isn’t just annoying—it’s dangerous.

Exhaustion doesn’t happen all at once—it builds until every move in heavy, sweat-soaked gear feels like a fight. And that’s a cycle no firefighter wants to be stuck in.”

Beyond the materials, design choices affect the safety and useability of gear. For example, multipurpose PPE might feature a bi-wing back design in the jacket that improves shoulder and arm mobility, so it’s easier to climb and maneuver in tight spaces without feeling restricted.

As another example, a Mandarin-style collar with a throat closure might be used to prevent debris from getting inside the jacket, but without the bulk and discomfort of traditional collars. 

Even little changes can make a big difference. Pant legs, for instance, might seem a trivial consideration, but features like oversized legs with long zipper bottoms can make it much easier to pull the pants over your boots without struggling. In all cases, the goal is to help wearers stay focused on their gear instead of fighting it. 

With advances in alternative PPE across the fire industry, achieving the right level of protection and mobility without the strain of full turnouts is possible. Of course, for many fire departments, alternative PPE can seem like a large investment in an entirely new class of gear. The financials, however, are not to be feared. The use of multipurpose PPE can greatly extend the useful life of pricier turnouts by letting them hang out at the station when non-fire calls come in. Furthermore, manufacturers may bundle gear like turnouts, alternative PPE and accessories at a discount to customers. 

Firefighters give everything they’ve got to the job. Their gear should give just as much back. The latest PPE innovations can help keep them safer, cooler and more comfortable. UK, UAE, and Saudi Arabia approve Ci Global’s safety smart sockets

Ci Global has announced the launch of its first safety smart sockets, Ci One and Ci Max.

These patented devices are designed to detect overheating electrical faults and automatically cut power before a fire can start.

The sockets are fully certified for use in the UK, UAE, and Saudi Arabia, with further approvals expected in other markets.

The development follows concerns over electrical faults being a leading cause of residential and commercial fires worldwide.

Anthony Parfitt, Founder and Chairman of Ci Global, developed the technology following the Grenfell Tower fire in 2017.

Parfitt said: “If this technology had been in place at Grenfell, the fire could have been stopped before it started. No other socket can claim to prevent fires in this way.”

Fire prevention beyond legislative measures

The UK government has introduced new building safety reforms in response to the Grenfell Inquiry.

However, Parfitt argues that these measures focus on accountability rather than prevention.

“The new regulations are an important step forward, but they focus on accountability after the risks have already been built into homes,” said Parfitt.

“True prevention means stopping electrical fires before they start, not just managing their aftermath.”

Ci Global is advocating for changes in fire safety legislation to include preventive measures like smart sockets in all buildings.

Addressing electrical fire risks at the source

Electrical faults remain a persistent fire risk, particularly due to overloaded sockets, faulty chargers, and substandard electrical devices.

These issues can lead to fires while residents are asleep, making early intervention critical.

“To stop electrical fires, we need to prevent them at the source,” said Parfitt.

“The Ci smart safety socket is designed to do just that – stop electrical fires before they can even start.”

The safety smart sockets have built-in thermal monitoring technology, allowing real-time detection of overheating. This system automatically shuts off power to prevent ignition.

Expanding safety features beyond fire prevention

Keeping your tent clean is crucial for your comfort and for extending its lifespan. This article provides comprehensive guidelines for cleaning your tent, so you can enjoy it for many years.

General considerations

A high-quality tent typically doesn’t require special maintenance, but there are some general points to consider to prolong the life of your tent and its accessories. These tips apply to any type of tent, regardless of its usage or the environment where it is deployed:

  1. Never pack the tent when it is wet or even slightly damp. Mold can form quickly, especially in hot weather, and ruin your tent. Additionally, sleeping in a moldy tent can cause serious health problems.
  2. Protect the tent skin from sharp objects such as nails, sharp plastic splinters and small stones.
  3. Position the tent where you plan to set it up. Do not drag the tent over the ground.
  4. Place furniture at a distance from the tent skin to ensure the tent never touches the objects inside, even in strong winds. This prevents cuts or holes in the fabric.
  5. Set up the tent according to the manufacturer’s instructions to avoid damage to the fabric or frame. Inspect the tent regularly, especially when it is set up but not in use. If unoccupied, inspect weekly in spring, summer and autumn and daily in winter.

In the event of snow or sandstorms, remove snow or sand from the roof to prevent blockages, even if the tents have a snow/sand load of 100 kg/m². Check the distance poles to ensure they remain in position. If possible, dig the ground flap into the ground.

Cleaning procedure

Most modern tents are made of sturdy, high-density fabrics. For example, our tents are built to be robust and low maintenance. The PVC-coated polyester fabric of the tent skin and floor is waterproof and durable.

Professional tents often use a fabric coated via a cadmium-free process and lacquered on both sides. These products are designed to attract minimal dirt and be easy to clean, maintaining their attractive appearance over time. However, cleaning should still be carried out with care and attention.

Whenever tents are dismantled and transported back to storage, inspect them as soon as possible for any wet fabrics. If the fabric is wet, wash and dry it immediately to prevent mold growth.

Check each tent fabric for soiling. If the fabrics are dry and not too dirty, clean them by removing dust with a vacuum cleaner and wiping the surface with water and a cloth or brush. Use a standard mild detergent soap to clean all fabric parts with lukewarm, mild soapy water and a soft sponge.

Rinse completely with clean water and air dry. Follow the fabric cleaning instructions provided by your tent’s manufacturer if you cannot remove the dirt this way.

Depending on the degree of soiling, it may be advisable to have facilities for scrubbing large fabrics, external covers up to 60 m² (10.00 x 6.00 m) and drying them after cleaning. Wash basins can be used for inner linings, room dividers and inner cabins, provided they are large enough.

Equipment required:

  • Pressure washer (if possible)
  • Water hoses
  • Brushes
  • Cleaning cloth
  • Cleaning agent
  • Water supply

If using a high-pressure cleaner, ensure the pressure is not too high. Use maximum diffusion and keep about 100 cm away from the fabric. We recommend that each cleaning team consists of 2-3 people, as some fabrics are quite heavy, especially when wet.

If the fabrics are very dirty, clean them with a high-pressure cleaner or plenty of water, detergent, and brush, then hang to dry after thoroughly rinsing with clean water. Do not dry fabric in a tumble dryer to avoid shrinkage. Ensure all linings, covers and floor sheets are clean and dry before storage.

Cleaning tents in the field:

When erected, clean the tent’s skin using water, detergent, and a cloth, sponge, or brush. Vacuum the tents to remove dust and clean the surface with water and a cloth or brush. Remove difficult stains such as oil or tar with a petrol-soaked cloth. Dry wet fabric as soon as possible to prevent mold growth.

Mold removal

Mold growth on the fabric surface can be a health hazard. Wear protective clothing to avoid inhaling mold spores. A solution of vinegar and water can be useful for removing surface mold. Start with a weak vinegar solution, as vinegar will etch the surface of the PVC. If this doesn’t work, try a more concentrated vinegar solution.

Mold generally penetrates the surface. If the mold stain is small and localized, you can replace the area. Simple repairs can be carried out using the materials in the repair kit supplied with each tent. For small tears in the PVC materials, use extra PVC fabric and glue.

Warning: If your tent skin has camouflage or any kind of print, using a cleaning agent might damage the print. Test the product in a small, hidden area before using it on a larger area.
