New tactical lighting options for firearms

Streamlight has launched new multi-fuel models in its TLR-8 series of laser-equipped tactical weapon lights.

The new models include the TLR-8 X with a red laser, the TLR-8 X G with a green laser, the TLR-8 X sub with a red laser, and the TLR-8 X G sub with a green laser.

These lights are designed for full-size, compact, and select subcompact handguns from manufacturers including GLOCK, SIG SAUER, and Springfield Armory.

The models offer the option of using either a CR123A lithium battery or Streamlight’s SL-B9 USB-C rechargeable battery pack.

Streamlight President and CEO Ray Sharrah said: “These new lights, like their originals, are designed to maximize shooters’ weapon platforms in a variety of home defense and tactical applications.”

Performance and features

The new TLR-8 X models produce 500 lumens and feature a high-power white LED with 5,000 candela output and a beam range of 141 metres.

They offer three lighting modes: LED Only, LED/Laser Combined, and Laser Only.

When using a CR123A battery, the run time is 1.5 hours for LED and LED/Laser mode, and 60 hours for Laser Only mode.

With the SL-B9 battery pack, the LED and LED/Laser modes run for one hour, and the Laser Only mode runs for 36 hours.

Each light has a customizable rear switch that allows ambidextrous operation and features a snap-on and tighten interface to enable mounting without placing hands near the muzzle.

Laser options and compatibility

The TLR-8 X and TLR-8 X sub models include a 640-660nm red aiming laser, while the TLR-8 X G and TLR-8 X G sub versions use a 510-530nm green aiming laser, which appears brighter to the human eye.

These models are designed to fit a variety of handguns, including the GLOCK 43X MOS, GLOCK 48 MOS, SIG SAUER P365 and P365 XL, Springfield Armory Hellcat, and multiple 1913 short-railed subcompact handguns.

Construction and durability

The new models are built from 6000 Series machined aircraft aluminium with a black anodized finish and have an IPX4 rating for water resistance.

The BOROFLOAT impact-resistant lens is designed to withstand heavy use.

The TLR-8 X and TLR-8 X G weigh 74.8 grams with a CR123A battery and 77.6 grams with the SL-B9 battery pack.

The TLR-8 X sub and TLR-8 X G sub weigh 78.5 grams with a disposable battery and 81.3 grams with the SL-B9 pack.

FBU announce call for Israel to release fire engine donated to Palestine

The Fire Brigades Union has announced that 20 MPs have signed an open letter calling for Israeli authorities to release a fire engine donated to Palestinian firefighters.

Fire Brigades Union members in Scotland donated a fire engine last year, packed with firefighting kit, equipment and medical supplies and arranged delivery to the port of Ashdod to be transported to Nablus in the West Bank.

It has been impounded by Israeli customs at the port since July 2024 despite having the necessary paperwork.

In November, firefighters and supporters held a demonstration outside the London embassy to demand the release of the fire engine.

The letter, signed by firefighters, trade unionists and MPs, calls for the immediate release of the fire engine so that it can be safely delivered to aid firefighters in Nablus.

The full statement from the MPs and trade unionists reads: “As firefighters and fire and rescue service workers, members of the Fire Brigades Union, other trade unionists, Members of Parliament and campaigners for justice and human rights, we are calling for safe release of the fire engine sent by FBU Scotland to aid Palestinian firefighters – but impounded by the Israeli authorities.

“This appliance, packed with firefighting kit, personal protective equipment, breathing apparatus, cutting tools and medical supplies, was sent for use by the Palestinian fire and rescue service in Nablus, in the West Bank. It has been held in the Israeli port of Ashdod since July 2024.

FBU announce firefighters will oppose “disastrous” policy at scrutiny meeting

The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) has announced that firefighters have address a meeting of the county council’s fire scrutiny panel Friday 7 March, calling on councillors to recommend that Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue service drops plans to change shift patterns. 

The Fire Brigades Union has warned that changing day shifts from 8am to 7pm instead of 9am to 6pm for wholetime (full time) firefighters risks forcing many firefighters out of the service. 

In letters to councillors, over 70 firefighters from across Gloucestershire have raised concerns that the imposed changes to working hours will increase childcare and caring costs for firefighters already struggling with the cost-of-living crisis.  

Ten frontline firefighters have been invited to address the meeting of the scrutiny panel and Gloucestershire fire and rescue service’s chief fire officer. The fire scrutiny panel comprises of county councillors, who have the power to recommend against this change. 

FBU officials say that the county council will be punishing women in the service instead of supporting them, while the change in working hours will have a detrimental impact on firefighter and public safety.

Can you tell us about a recent Cygnus installation and the challenges it aimed to address? 

Johnsons Workwear, an industrial garment laundry business based in central Bristol, updated its fire alarm and detection systems with the help of installers, Cannon Fire & Security, after a fire risk assessment highlighted the existing 30-year-old system was inadequate. The assessment advised that its three buildings would require a category L1 fire alarm installation. 

The primary challenges included the risk of asbestos, installation time and potential operational downtime. To address these challenges effectively, Cannon Fire & Security chose Cygnus’ world first EN 54 certified and 100% wireless SmartNet-Pro fire detection and alarm system. This system ensured a highly reliable and efficient installation. 

What made Cygnus the right choice for this project? 

Cygnus’ award-winning SmartNet-Pro was chosen for its 100% wireless technology, significantly reducing the need for extensive cabling. The nature of the properties brought certain complexities due to their age, namely the amount of metal framework of the building which would require other wireless fire alarm systems to install a significant number of hard-wired expanders.  

Additionally, the risk of asbestos needed to be considered, as extensive drilling would present health and safety risks. SmartNet-Pro, being 100% wireless, required only minimal drilling to fix devices to ceilings and walls. This ensured minimal disruption, allowing Johnsons Workwear to continue operation during installation, and saving both time and costs. 

How did the installation process unfold, and were there any unique challenges? 

The installation process began with a pre-site meeting and walk-around to plan an initial hard-wired solution. Dominic Gundry-White, Managing Director of Cannon Fire & Security I met with the Cygnus team who discussed SmartNet-Pro and how the product uses wireless mesh technology to eliminate the requirement for any hard-wired cabling or boosters, characteristics which were ideal for Johnsons Workwear.  

By switching to Cygnus’ SmartNet-Pro, the installation took two weeks with no disruption the client, instead of the proposed eight weeks, which would have caused a lot of disruption. 

The site consists of two industrial laundry buildings and a separate boiler house, which have all been connected using one SmartNet-Pro control panel. The installation utilises 170 Cygnus SmartNet-Pro devices including detectors, sounders, call points and input/output units.

IOSH addresses gender-specific workplace safety issues

IOSH examines PPE fit issues for women

The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) has published a blog on International Women’s Day, outlining the challenges women continue to face in workplace safety.

Olivia Barrett, TechIOSH and a health and safety consultant, highlighted ongoing concerns such as ill-fitting personal protective equipment (PPE), physical strain in manual handling tasks, and gender bias in health and safety policies.

Barrett noted that PPE such as helmets, gloves, boots, and body armour has traditionally been designed for men.

This results in women having to use equipment that is either too large or too small, which can compromise both comfort and safety.

Ill-fitting PPE increases the risk of injuries, including strains and accidents caused by discomfort.

She suggested that manufacturers and employers prioritise the development of PPE tailored for women, considering differences in body shape, weight distribution, and size.

Expanding the range of available PPE sizes and designs would ensure all workers have access to properly fitting safety equipment.

Physical demands and manual handling concerns

Manual handling tasks often do not account for physical differences between men and women, according to Barrett.

Jobs requiring heavy lifting or prolonged standing may assume uniform physical capability among all workers, placing women at greater risk of musculoskeletal injuries.

She highlighted that in sectors such as healthcare and manufacturing, women may be required to lift heavy equipment or patients without adequate support.

This increases the likelihood of back, neck, and joint injuries, especially when workplaces do not provide appropriate ergonomic solutions.

To address these risks, Barrett recommended that employers assess the physical demands of tasks and implement adjustments where necessary.

This could include mechanical lifting aids, ergonomic training, and workspaces designed to accommodate a diverse workforce.

Gender bias in workplace health and safety policies

Barrett also pointed to gender bias in workplace health and safety policies.

She noted that many policies have been shaped by male-dominated workplaces and often fail to address health concerns unique to women, such as reproductive health risks and the effects of menopause.

She explained that some workplaces do not provide adequate guidance on managing risks related to pregnancy, exposure to hazardous chemicals, or menstruation-related discomfort.

Additionally, a lack of awareness and support can leave women without clear protocols for addressing gender-specific health concerns.

Barrett called for more inclusive health and safety training and policies that recognise these issues.

She emphasised the importance of creating safety programmes that reflect workforce diversity and provide clear procedures for managing gender-specific health risks.

Addressing harassment and underrepresentation in leadership

IOSH’s blog also highlighted the impact of workplace harassment on women’s safety.

Barrett noted that women in male-dominated industries often experience higher rates of harassment, discrimination, and bullying.

She stated that these issues contribute to stress, anxiety, and burnout, affecting both mental health and job performance.

She recommended that employers establish clear anti-harassment policies, promote a culture of respect, and provide mental health support services.

Creating a work environment where employees feel safe and supported would help mitigate these challenges.

Another issue raised was the underrepresentation of women in safety leadership roles.

Barrett noted that decision-making positions in workplace safety are still largely male-dominated, which can result in policies that overlook or dismiss women’s concerns.

To improve representation, she suggested that companies encourage and support women in safety leadership roles through mentorship programmes, career development initiatives, and gender diversity in hiring.

Ensuring women’s involvement in safety decision-making would contribute to more comprehensive workplace policies.

IOSH addresses gender-specific workplace safety issues: Summary

AEI Cables’ Firetec Enhanced cabling has been approved and certified by LPCB to BS8519 (Annex B), Category 3 Control in addition to Category 2 Control.

The BS Code of Practice under BS8519 contains six categories of cables, three for power cables and three for control cables each covering survival times of 30, 60 or 120 minutes.

New Armstrong fire pump reaches 160PSI for global markets

Expanded fire pump range introduced

Armstrong Fluid Technology has expanded its line of Constant Speed Vertical-In-Line Fire Pumps, now offering a model with a maximum 500 US gallons per minute (USGPM) flow rate for both 60Hz and 50Hz markets.

The new pump includes high-pressure ratings of up to 160PSI.

It has been designed to reduce the need for offset piping and motor realignment while occupying less floor space than Horizontal Split Case models.

The latest addition to Armstrong’s Vertical-In-Line series includes a smaller motor than comparable pumps at the same duty point.
