Compliance and cabling choices under the new regime

AEI Cables has said choosing the correct cabling under the new regulatory regime is critical for safety across the construction industry supply chain.

The company said it is receiving requests from customers for help staying within the legal framework of the Building Safety Act and its requirements as the new Building Safety Regulator starts to make enforcement for non-compliance.

Cable categories and stated survival times

AEI Cables is highlighting Category 3 fire performance cables where relevant, describing them as designed to withstand heat and flames for up to 120 minutes to protect equipment and provide emergency power to assist firefighters.

It said these cables support critical safety circuits in tall buildings, office spaces, hospitals, shopping malls and stadia.

The company also linked these cables to systems including smoke and heat extraction systems, stating they support firefighting and evacuation in life safety scenarios.

Category 1 fire performance cables are described as providing 30 minutes of defence against flames and being used for emergency lighting.

Category 2 cables are described as providing 60 minutes of fire protection and being commonly used for alarm systems.

Product approvals and certifications referenced

AEI Cables said its Firetec Enhanced cabling has been approved and certified by LPCB to BS8519 (Annex B), Category 3 Control in addition to Category 2 Control.

It described BS8519 as a code of practice with six categories of cables, split into three power and three control categories covering survival times of 30, 60 or 120 minutes.

AEI Cables also said its products are supplied with approvals from independent bodies including BASEC and LPCB, and that it holds approvals from organisations including Lloyds, the MoD, Network Rail and LUL.

In the article, the IFE notes that the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 24 January as International Day of Education to recognise the role education plays in fostering peace and sustainable development.

It describes the day as a reminder that education in fire engineering is connected to saving lives.

The IFE writes: “Education is the foundation of fire safety – without knowledge, we cannot design, innovate or plan to protect communities.”

What the IFE says education should cover

Rescue Intellitech marks 50th Solo Rescue machine installation in British Isles

Rescue Intellitech milestone installation at Jersey fire headquarters

Rescue Intellitech has installed its 50th Solo Rescue machine in the British Isles, with the latest unit installed at States of Jersey Fire and Rescue Service (SJFRS) headquarters in St Helier.

The machine was introduced to improve the speed, effectiveness and safety of PPE cleaning for SJFRS and to support post-incident decontamination.

Rescue Intellitech launched the Solo Rescue machine to fire services in Scandinavia in 2012.

The machine is designed to clean firefighter helmets, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), boots and gloves.

Today, the company’s machines are used by fire departments globally, with its product range also including specialist washing machines for firefighter clothing and drying cabinets for PPE.

Jersey decontamination room redesign and Solo Rescue installation

The new machine has been installed at SJFRS headquarters as part of a reconfiguration of its decontamination room, where PPE cleaning for the island’s 113 firefighters is carried out.

Station Commander Ben Elliott said: “Previously, our SCBA and other PPE items were carefully cleaned by hand.

“We recognised that by investing in the Solo Rescue machine, the process would be quicker and more efficient, as well as safer for our staff.

“Crucially, the mechanical cleaning of PPE helps to reduce exposure and contact time.

“In particular, SCBA sets are complex and tricky to clean manually, but come out visibly cleaner with the Solo Rescue.”

The installation was completed in a single day and included a demonstration and training for the team responsible for operating the machine.

A bespoke shadow board was also created to store ancillary products including brushes, gloves and detergent sprays.

Elliott added: “We have been really impressed with the customer service provided by Rescue Intellitech, from initial discussions to installation, to ongoing support.

“Our location means we can’t rely on external managed services to clean and return our kit swiftly, so we have to handle all our own cleaning on site.

“The Solo Rescue machine has helped make these cleaning processes safer and more efficient, and feedback from the staff has been very positive.”

SJFRS has also ordered two drying cabinets, a DC20 and a DC8, which will be located in an adjacent drying room.

The cabinets are designed for PPE and dry interior and exterior surfaces simultaneously without mechanical action.

The announcement referenced research published by the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) in 2023, which highlighted the importance of swift and careful decontamination of PPE after fire-related incidents to protect the long-term health and wellbeing of firefighters.

NFPA LiNK is a subscription-based platform that provides access to more than 300 NFPA codes and standards.

The latest version introduces new digital tools intended to support more structured and collaborative ways of working.

Key additions include an AI-powered assistant called CASI (Codes and Standards Intelligence), interactive and customisable notebooks and a redesigned dashboard.

CASI enables users to hold interactive conversations, receive summarised responses, access citations from NFPA content and retain complete chat histories while reviewing the relevant material.

PVSTOP solar panel block-out system added to Britannia Fire P50 range

What the solar panel hazard means for emergency response

Britannia Fire has launched PVSTOP, a solar panel block-out solution supplied in composite P50 units.

PVSTOP is a liquid coating designed to block light on contact and shut down solar panel power generation during an emergency.

Solar panels generate electricity whenever exposed to light and cannot be switched off during an incident.

This creates a DC electrical hazard that persists regardless of isolator switches, rapid shutdown systems or other electrical controls.

PVSTOP works by blocking light at source to stop power generation on contact.

Partial coverage is intended to break the electrical circuit and render panels electrically safe.

Intended use and material properties

Britannia Fire says the system is intended to allow first responders and maintenance teams to isolate solar panels after a short circuit, storm damage or early signs of smoke or arcing.

PVSTOP is non-flammable, fire-retardant and weatherproof.

It can be applied to wet and dry surfaces.

The coating solidifies and peels away without damaging solar panels.

It can remain in place for up to 12 months.

PVSTOP is water-based and non-toxic, with disposal through general waste.

Verification, units and partner comments

Britannia Fire says PVSTOP is the only solar safety solution to achieve ISO 14034:2016 Environmental Technology Verification, with independent testing confirming effectiveness.

The technology has been operationally validated by London Fire Brigade, Fire Department of New York and Singapore Civil Defence Force.

PVSTOP is available in 6L and 9L composite P50 units that do not require annual servicing.

The composite cylinders are up to 50% lighter than steel models, corrosion resistant and suited to outdoor or coastal solar installations.

Halma acquires Italy-based Safetec in €72.5m fire and gas deal

Halma has acquired Safetec, an Italy-based provider of customised fire and gas safety solutions for large-scale industrial projects.

The company said Safetec was founded in 2003 and is headquartered near Milan.

Halma said Safetec designs, engineers and delivers tailored systems for complex and high-risk industrial environments.

Purchase price, funding and business structure

Halma said the cash consideration is €72.5m, around £63m, on a cash- and debt-free basis.

It added that the acquisition will be funded from Halma’s existing facilities.

Halma said Safetec’s revenue for the 12 months to 31 December 2025 is forecast to be about €30m, around £26m.

The company said Safetec will operate as a standalone business within Halma’s Safety Sector, led by its current management team.

Safetec markets and regions cited

Halma said Safetec serves markets including power generation, oil and gas and pharmaceutical sectors.

It added that Safetec works in other highly regulated sectors where stringent safety requirements apply.

Halma said Safetec’s solutions support customers to manage risk and comply with industry standards in demanding environments.

The company said Safetec’s major geographic markets include the Middle East, Europe and Africa.

Road safety charter pilot prompts IOSH call for employer action

IOSH calls for employer action over road safety

The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) has called on employers to take action to prevent work-related road traffic incidents, as a new UK charter is being piloted to set a national standard for organisations that require people to drive or ride for work.

The organisation linked the call to the National Work Related Road Safety Charter pilot, which it said covers employers whose staff use HGVs, vans, cars, motorcycles, e cycles and cycles.

IOSH said the pilot forms part of measures in the Government’s new road safety strategy.

It said the strategy aims to reduce deaths and serious injuries on Britain’s roads by 65% by 2035.

Charter pilot sets national standards

The charter is designed to help organisations in the public and private sectors reduce work related road risk, IOSH said.

It said the charter promotes good practice, clear accountability and compliance with existing legislation.

IOSH said employer leadership is essential to reduce work related road harm.

It said this requires work-related road risk to be embedded in health and safety management systems and risk assessments.

IOSH points to fatality estimate

IOSH said an estimated one in three road traffic fatalities involve someone travelling for work purposes.

The organisation said this estimate means businesses should do more to manage work-related road risk.

IOSH said it welcomed the charter pilot.

It added that it wants work-related road traffic incidents included as a reporting requirement under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR).

Policy lead sets out expectations

Ruth Wilkinson, Head of Policy and Public Affairs at IOSH, said: “Work shouldn’t cost lives.

“As part of health and safety law, employers have a clear legal and moral duty of care that extends beyond the physical workplace, and covers all work activities – including driving and riding for work.

“It includes driving your own vehicle when using it for business, and it can include commuting to and from work if you are travelling to a location that is not your normal place of work.

“Preventing harm and protecting people on the road is part of protecting people at work — and business leaders must act now.

“The Charter is a decisive step forward.

“It sets expectations for board level oversight, competent risk management, and robust controls across all vehicle types — from HGVs and vans to motorcycles, e cycles and cycles.

“Good practice must be non negotiable: fit for purpose and safe vehicles; safe scheduling that eliminates fatigue and allows enough time for a safe journey; competent, fit and capable drivers and riders; zero tolerance for distraction and impairment; and data driven monitoring of incidents and near misses.

“Compliance with the law is the floor, not the ceiling.”

IOSH said managers should consider alternatives to driving, such as train travel or video- and tele-conferencing.

It said organisations should have arrangements for drivers and riders to report incidents and near misses.

IOSH said this is intended to support learning and action to prevent reocurrence.

Industrial fires are often treated as sudden events.

In practice, they are usually the final outcome of conditions that have been developing for hours or days.

Across heavy industry, fire safety has traditionally relied on response mechanisms.

Alarms, suppression systems and evacuation procedures are designed to activate once smoke or heat reaches a defined threshold.

These systems remain essential for compliance and life safety, but they are triggered late in the sequence of events.

From viAct’s perspective, this reactive model leaves a gap between hazard formation and ignition.

Recent incidents have illustrated how quickly that gap can close.

The November 2025 fire in a high-rise housing and renovation complex in Hong Kong spread rapidly through combustible bamboo scaffolding and construction mesh materials.

Once ignition occurred, the speed of fire spread left little margin for intervention.

In environments such as construction, logistics, manufacturing and energy, viAct argues that fire safety effectiveness depends less on response speed and more on how early risk conditions are identified.

Why Traditional Fire Safety Still Leaves a Gap

Industrial workplaces remain among the higher-risk environments for fire.

According to a recent survey of workplace fires, industrial premises accounted for 24.85 percent of all workplace fires in the UK in 2024–25.

The National Safety Council reports that in the United States, fire departments respond to a fire incident every 23 seconds.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) estimated an average of 4,300 construction fires each year, resulting in around 62 civilian injuries, five civilian fatalities and property damage worth $375 million.

Many established fire safety measures, including periodic inspections, manual audits and alarm-based detection systems, are designed to respond once defined thresholds are reached.

As a result, they primarily capture lagging indicators, recording events after ignition has occurred.

Earlier conditions that can contribute to ignition, such as gradual temperature increases, smouldering equipment, undetected gas leaks or the accumulation of combustible dust, may fall outside routine reporting and monitoring processes.

These conditions are often addressed informally or remain undocumented, despite their potential role in later incidents.

This interval between the presence of a hazard and the onset of a fire represents an area where additional monitoring and analysis methods are increasingly being explored.

Real-time fire intelligence in practice

Advances in computer vision, sensor integration and edge analytics now allow risk conditions to be monitored continuously rather than intermittently.

In practical terms, this can involve identifying unsafe states such as blocked fire exits, combustible materials positioned near heat sources, sparks in restricted zones or early smoke particles that fall below alarm thresholds.

By analysing visual data, air quality, temperature change and historical patterns together, fire risk can be treated as a dynamic condition rather than a binary event.

Manufacturing plants have used machine vision systems to alert supervisors when debris blocks heat vents hours before temperatures reach critical levels.

Large logistics hubs have deployed particle-level smoke analytics to identify smouldering pallets long before sprinklers activate.

“Real-time fire intelligence isn’t about replacing fire marshals or safety officers — it’s about expanding their field of vision,” says Gary Ng, CEO of viAct. “When hidden thermal build-up or risky worker routines surface early, safety teams can intervene before danger turns irrecoverable.”

From detection to foresight

In complex industrial environments, risk is rarely static.

Equipment heats gradually, layouts shift and temporary works introduce new ignition sources.

When data from cameras, sensors, maintenance logs and environmental conditions is analysed together, patterns can emerge that are difficult to detect through manual checks alone.

A motor running slightly hotter than its baseline or debris repeatedly accumulating near a vent may appear insignificant in isolation, but can become more meaningful when tracked over time.

viAct views this as a shift from detection to foresight.

A complementary approach

Real-time fire intelligence does not remove responsibility from duty holders.

It also does not replace alarms, suppression systems or trained personnel.

It requires governance, defined thresholds and integration with existing safety management systems.

Industrial sites are becoming larger, denser and more automated, so continuous monitoring approaches are gaining attention as a way to supplement scheduled checks and conventional detection.

Fire Aware has called for further training and education across the industry to help improve prevention and improve fire safety across the built environment.

The organisation said it wants training and guidance to reach all levels of the supply chain, including people who carry a duty of care without working in a fire safety specialism.

Shortages linked to new legislation demands

Fire Aware said the sector is facing shortages of qualified staff.

It said the problem has been made worse by the need for specialist skills to manage new legislation introduced under the Building Safety Act.

NFCC figures cited on fire engineering capacity

Fire Aware linked its message to figures recently reported by the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC).

The NFCC reported that there are fewer than 30 fully competent fire engineers in the English Fire and Rescue Services.

It added that fire safety and building protection staff make up 2.7% of the fire and rescue service workforce in England.

Educators and course provision across roles

Fire Aware said its growing number of Fire Aware Educators includes members with specialist skill sets in all aspects of fire safety.

The organisation said its work includes a focus on the moral responsibility of those working in the fire safety supply chain, including designers, developers, asset owners, managers and other stakeholders.

It said it aims to influence behaviour through a moral code of conduct set out via a series of charters for member companies.
