Advanced Fire Protection SW has installed a SmartNet-Pro wireless fire detection and alarm system at Home Meadow, a retirement property in Cambridge.

According to Cygnus, the installation was completed in three days and required no cabling, due to the 100% wireless design of the SmartNet system.

The retirement home is operated by housing association LiveWest and comprises 50 individual flats.

Cygnus stated that the previous cabling infrastructure was considered too outdated to support modern fire detection systems.

The company explained that a full rewiring was ruled out as it would have caused major disruption to residents.

LiveWest required a certified fire system that could be fitted with minimal intrusion.

Cygnus said the SmartNet-Pro met this need by offering full EN 54 compliance and wireless installation.

Installers report system stability and reduced disruption

Advanced Fire Protection SW has used SmartNet for previous installations, but this was its largest to date.

Lee Wilkinson, Managing Director at Advanced Fire Protection SW, said: “This was our third time using Cygnus SmartNet and our largest installation using the solution to date! “Minimising disruption to residents and workers was paramount, and working alongside Advanced Fire Protection SW, as well as our on-site warden, the installation process was smooth and well-coordinated.

“Since this project, we have now installed Cygnus SmartNet into over a dozen of our sites at LiveWest.”

Cygnus confirmed that training is required for all SmartNet installers.

The company said its training courses are offered at either the Cygnus Academy in Hereford or the Technology and Training Centre in Birmingham.

According to the company, training is split into basic and advanced modules.

Wilkinson said: “All eight of our installers at Advanced Fire Protection SW are certified with the basic training programme. A couple of us have also completed the advanced training course.

“We found the Cygnus Academy informative and helpful for learning the system and software.

The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) has reported that economic challenges in UK agriculture are contributing to continued health and safety risks, particularly as farmers take on longer hours and delay risk assessments.

This update was delivered during an IOSH webinar held as part of 2025 Farm Safety Week, chaired by IOSH President-Elect Richard Bate.

According to IOSH, the agriculture, forestry and fishing sector continues to record the highest fatality rate of any UK industry, despite comprising only one percent of the workforce.

IOSH said that in 2023/24 alone, 11,000 serious injuries were recorded, and the sector accounted for 20 percent of all workplace deaths.

Richard Bate said: “The need for collaborative, meaningful conversations and change on farm safety has rarely been more urgent.”

Rising operational costs impact risk management

Webinar panellist Olivia Barrett, a risk management consultant at NFU Mutual, said rising input costs were placing increased pressure on farmers.

She said that costs related to animal feed, fuel, power and straw had risen from 38 percent to 50 percent of total farm expenditure.

She explained that competitive market conditions have prevented farmers from passing on these costs through product pricing.

Barrett stated that these financial burdens are leading to operational compromises that can impact health and safety practice.

Other panellists echoed this concern, pointing to risk-prone working conditions becoming more common.

Workforce fatigue and mental health risks

Mike Whiting, a farming consultant and chair of the IOSH Rural Industries Group, warned that workforce cuts are causing longer hours for remaining staff.

Whiting said: “This has forced many farm workers into working even longer hours, causing fatigue.”

He explained that tiredness among farm staff has increased the likelihood of accidents, injuries, and fatalities.

Panellists said that many farmers are now generating more income through tourism and leisure than through traditional farming.

He said examples include glamping and on-site food services, which require different safety considerations.

Phillimore added: “Health and safety may not always be front of mind because it’s not their priority.”

He warned that mental health and injury prevention are becoming marginalised topics in farm management conversations.

Fatalities linked to ATVs prompt training support

The Health and Safety Executive has reported that seven workplace fatalities in agriculture, forestry and fishing in 2024/25 involved all-terrain vehicles, including two children.

The Farm Safety Foundation, also known as Yellow Wellies, has launched a partnership with Lantra to offer fully funded ATV safety training.

The bursary is available to 100 UK farmers for accredited training programmes focused on proper use of these vehicles.

The Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) has announced new research into how UK firms are responding to the current building safety regime.

The research is being carried out with construction analysts Barbour ABI.

BESA said the aim is to evaluate levels of compliance across the mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) sector under the Building Safety Act.

The news follows changes announced by the UK Government, which removed enforcement responsibility from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

According to BESA, this is the second annual building safety survey targeting organisations of all sizes.

The organisation said it will assess levels of legal understanding, individual competence, and organisational capability across the MEP supply chain.

Fast-track measures follow planning delays and low approvals

BESA stated the research comes at a time of policy changes and growing urgency around planning approvals.

According to BESA, delays and a shortage of assessors prompted the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) to introduce a fast-track scheme.

The new scheme is being led by two former senior fire officers.

A Freedom of Information request submitted by cost consultant Cast revealed that only 10.8 percent of Gateway 2 project applications had been approved.

She continued: “We are seeing very big variations by role and type of organisation.”

She said: “Those with greater understanding, particularly of individual competence and organisational capability, are more likely to have taken steps to comply with the Act.”

BESA said the survey will explore role-specific awareness, track behavioural change, and examine why some organisations have not adapted their practices.

According to Davidson, lack of support remains a key issue: “Where action has not been taken, it is often due to a lack of clarity, guidance, or support.”

She added: “Identifying these barriers will inform targeted interventions to improve industry-wide compliance.”

Industry Competence Committee input included

BESA stated the new survey includes input from Jon Vanstone, chair of the Industry Competence Committee (ICC).

The ICC advises the Building Safety Regulator on matters relating to individual and organisational competence.

Vanstone said: “BESA’s research comes at an important time because pressure is building to get more projects through planning gateways.”

He added: “However, this also raises the stakes around competence and compliance because the industry will still need to meet rigorous safety standards as workloads increase.”

He continued: “Therefore, any findings that help us understand why companies might be struggling to meet the requirements will be incredibly helpful in shaping our advice to the regulator.”

BESA said the inclusion of ICC questions will help shape guidance and education efforts for the wider sector.

Legislative intent remains a central focus

The UK Government has pledged to hire 100 new planning specialists to reduce project delays.

According to BESA, this is linked to the Government’s goal of delivering 1.5 million homes during the current parliamentary term.

Frise continued: “The research we are launching aims to understand why so many companies and individuals are still not changing their behaviour because, ultimately, this has to be about doing the right thing – even when no-one is looking.”

According to the Fire Brigades Union (FBU), the comments follow recent data from the Office for Product Safety and Standards showing at least 211 fires involving e-scooters and e-bikes were recorded in 2024. In 2020, the figure was 26.

The majority of incidents occurred in London, but the figures are based on voluntary reporting by fire and rescue services, meaning the national total is likely higher.

The union said lithium-ion battery fires pose specific hazards, including the release of flammable gases and the potential for explosion.

These incidents are taking place alongside a documented rise in wildfires and flood responses, which the FBU linked to climate change.

Union cites cuts and slower response times

The Fire Brigades Union said that cuts to the fire service have weakened its ability to respond to modern risks.

The company said that all BAFE Scheme activity will now be conducted by BAFE Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of BAFE Holdings Limited.

He stated: “Programmes like the Warm Homes Plan, Great British Insulation Scheme and Boiler Upgrade Scheme are designed to improve heating efficiency, but these could equally be used to help people who are just as vulnerable to heat as they are to winter cold.”

Morrissey added that without adequate ventilation and cooling, insulation can contribute to overheating, damp and poor air quality, which can further impact health.

Cooling capabilities of heat pumps

BESA said the government should modify the Boiler Upgrade Scheme to include support for air-to-air heat pumps that offer cooling as well as heating.

According to the association, these technologies are underused despite their potential to reduce overheating and cut emissions.

Morrissey said: “It is a significant drawback that grant funding is not available for air-to-air heat pumps that provide cooling as well as heating.”

He added: “Not only could this help to tackle overheating but would also fuel additional market growth and help to reduce carbon emissions.”

BESA said this approach would be more adaptable and encourage broader uptake of heat pump installations.
