Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Acting Superintendent Cameron Herbert said: “No new property losses were reported on Tuesday as crews battled the 37 degrees Celsius weather to bolster containment lines established on Monday.”

He added: “It’s not a fire that you can put out. We can’t actually extinguish it, but we just need to control it.”

Reinforcements from Victoria state and New Zealand are en route to the fire’s epicentre to provide relief to the exhausted local fire crews.

“The fatigue is definitely setting in,” Herbert expressed.

“Today’s technology allows us to gather much more high-quality data than even a decade ago,” said Dr. Braun, currently a Professor of Mathematics and Statistics at UBC Okanagan’s Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science.

Improved data collection tools, combined with a heightened focus on topography – including the use of satellites and drones – have the potential to markedly improve fire models.

According to Dr. Braun, these advancements are particularly useful in assessing fire spread rates in mountainous regions.

Properly incorporating this information can considerably boost the precision of fire models, paving the way for optimised firefighting strategies and infrastructure safety evaluations.

Fire spread models: A focus on predictability

Dr. Braun’s research primarily explores fire spread models, especially those stochastic models which factor in uncertainties.

Such models can produce a broader and more dependable set of predictions compared to deterministic models that provide a single probable outcome.

He points to the 2016 Fort McMurray fire as an example, suggesting that utilising advanced stochastic models might have drastically enhanced decision-making and resource distribution, possibly preventing extensive destruction and losses.

It’s worth noting that the Fort McMurray fire remains the most expensive disaster in Canadian history, causing a staggering $9.9 billion in damages.

This fire obliterated 2,400 residences and necessitated the evacuation of 88,000 individuals.

When discussing the response to this fire, Dr. Braun said: “Initial calculations showed a five per cent probability that the fire could reach the city limits by 6 or 7 pm—which is actually about when it did.

“If they had known this, they might have made a different decision.

“These models serve as essential decision support tools, improving both infrastructure safety and firefighting efforts.”

The researchers’ goals also encompass enhancing risk and vulnerability evaluations used in project planning.

Dr. Hanna’s work specifically looks into the details required by regulators for the green light on power projects within Canada.

Their combined research aims to set up steadfast procedures for gauging risk and safety factors along electric transmission paths, ensuring resilience against sudden calamities like wildfires.

“This project provides a unique platform to unify various research disciplines for addressing energy resiliency and security in the face of evolving climate challenges,” Dr. Hanna, an Associate Professor in Earth Sciences and Director of UBC’s Centre for Environmental Assessment Research, explained.

The research centre boasts funding of US$5 million from the US National Science Foundation and an additional C$3.75 million from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.

This collaboration encompasses 11 North American universities and institutes dedicated to confronting the escalating challenges posed by wildfires, heatwaves, droughts, and floods.

Such severe climatic incidents not only put human lives and the environment in jeopardy but also endanger the power grid that supplies electricity to millions.

This grid extends over two Canadian provinces and 14 western states, catering to approximately 80 million individuals across a vast 4.66 million square kilometres.

“This will help safeguard infrastructure, particularly power lines and natural gas systems, and potentially save billions in damage and replacement costs,” added Dr. Hanna.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service leads the way in accredited wildfire training

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS) has become the first fire and rescue service to offer accredited training for wildfire response tactics, working closely with SFJ Awards.

This initiative follows the Service’s experience in dealing with over 2,000 wildfires from March 2022 to August 2023.

Bridging the training gap: collaboration with experts

The Operational Development Team, with SFJ Awards and wildfire specialist, Group Manager Craig Hope, constructed bespoke qualifications.

These qualifications cater to roles ranging from Wildfire Operators to Wildfire Planners (tactical managers).

Priority was given to training on equipment like the brush cutter, I-cutter, and leaf blower, ensuring all staff possess the vital tools and knowledge to effectively and safely handle wildfires.

Station Manager for Operational Development, Luke Phillips, shared: “Wildfires are becoming increasingly common and difficult to control, threatening communities, ecosystems, and wildlife.

“To stay updated, our Operational Development team has proactively created and launched specialised wildfire training, in sync with our current wildfire leads, instructors, and assessors.”

Past collaboration brings present success

SFJ Awards have previously partnered with SWFRS to deliver qualifications such as the Level 3 Diploma for both On-Call and Wholetime Duty System Firefighter recruits, and several instructor qualifications.

This established relationship enabled the design of qualifications that precisely address the challenges of wildfire responses.

Group Manager for Training and Development, Craig Hope, stated: “South Wales Fire and Rescue Service has consistently trained teams on managing wildfires.

In a recent announcement, Rain, renowned for its aerial wildfire containment technology, and Sikorsky, a subsidiary of Lockheed Martin, have revealed their partnership to advance rapid response capabilities for aerial wildland firefighting.

Exploring cutting-edge technologies for aerial wildland firefighting

The essence of this collaboration is to integrate Sikorsky’s MATRIX autonomy suite with Rain’s Wildfire Mission Autonomy System.

The end goal is to deploy uncrewed helicopters, at the earliest detection of wildfires, to deliver water and suppress the blaze.

Rain’s CEO, Maxwell Brodie, elucidated on this: “Combining Sikorsky’s demonstrated mature vehicle autonomy system with Rain’s early response capability will show how an uncrewed helicopter can quickly fly to a suspected ignition, and drop water to suppress a wildfire in its initial stages with no human onboard.”

He further added that the vision includes providing fire agencies with the ability to position a fleet of firefighting aircraft that can receive and execute mission commands effectively.

Fast response and economic benefits

By employing Rain’s system, mission commands can be uploaded to Sikorsky’s Optionally Piloted helicopters, ensuring a swift reaction time.

Brodie highlighted studies which indicate that a mere 15-minute reduction in wildfire response could potentially save California between $3.5 to $8.2 billion annually.

The MATRIX system, a product of Sikorsky Innovations, is a culmination of over a decade of development.

This system is a blend of software and hardware that ensures an aircraft can safely navigate tough terrains even without a crew.

Igor Cherepinsky, Director of Sikorsky Innovations, explained: “MATRIX executes a full mission plan considering various factors including mission goals, aircraft performance, and environmental conditions.”

Rain’s expertise lies in early wildfire detection and the quick dispatch of autonomous aircraft.

Their integrated system can identify and locate wildfires, formulate a suppression strategy, and determine the optimal flight path.

Bushfires rage in southeast Australia during spring heatwave

A bushfire in Victoria state, Australia, increased significantly overnight, and residents in a distant part of Tasmania were advised to evacuate as spring heatwaves intensified fires in southeast Australia.

Approximately 17,000 hectares (66 square miles) were burning on Tuesday in Victoria state’s Gippsland region.

High winds during the night exacerbated the fire, state fire authorities reported.

They have engaged about 650 firefighters in response.

Jason Heffernan, the chief officer at Country Fire Authority Victoria, commented: “We moved in strike teams in the very early hours of this morning.”

He continued: “It is quite a large fire spread across a broad area.” “It’s proving challenging, burning on private land and also in pine plantations.”

On Tasmania’s Flinders Island, residents were instructed to evacuate due to an uncontrolled bushfire.

Hot, dry winds are fueling these bushfires, with Australia witnessing a particularly warm spring.

Weather conditions and records

Australia recorded its driest September ever, as reported by the Bureau of Meteorology. Rainfall was 71% below the average from 1961-1990.

Weather in Victoria is predicted to change rapidly on Tuesday afternoon. While heavy rainfall is expected to assist in combating the bushfires, it may also cause flash floods.

Jason Heffernan expressed his concerns: “It’s very concerning.” He added: “People often joke in Victoria that one can experience four seasons in a single day, and today, that seems accurate.”

In New South Wales, the prevailing hot and dry conditions prompted authorities to prohibit open fires in significant portions of the state, including the Greater Sydney Region.

On Tuesday morning, 82 bushfires were identified in the state, with 16 not contained.

In the western part of Sydney, temperatures are anticipated to reach 37 degrees Celsius (98.6°F) on Tuesday afternoon.

England’s Fire and Rescue National Frameworks have not specifically addressed the wildfire threat.

The study also identifies that wildfire preparedness varies greatly depending on the location, terming it a ‘postcode lottery’.

There exists no mandatory requirement to integrate this risk into local strategies.

Recent climatic patterns, such as the UK experiencing its hottest June and unprecedented September temperatures, amplify concerns.

The Fire Brigades Union emphasises that the severe wildfires seen across Europe serve as a pressing reminder. With the expectation of rising temperatures in the future, there is a compelling case to bolster preparations.

The union advocates for several measures:

  1. The development of a UK-wide strategy and standards for wildfires.
  2. A statutory obligation for the government and fire and rescue authorities to ensure readiness.

Matt Wrack, the general secretary of the Fire Brigades Union, offered his perspective: “As the climate evolves, we witness a surge in destructive wildfires due to global temperature hikes.
