Hochiki Middle East has reported that it will present a range of fire detection technologies at Intersec Saudi Arabia 2025.

The exhibition will take place at the Riyadh International Convention and Exhibition Centre from 29 September to 1 October.

According to the company, the presentation will highlight systems designed to meet the regulatory, environmental, and operational requirements of projects in Saudi Arabia.

It said the products are tailored for high temperatures, rapid construction schedules, and compliance with the Saudi Building Code.

South Wales site adopts wireless fire detection system

Cygnus Systems has reported that its SmartNet-Pro wireless fire detection and alarm system has been installed at the A5 Hub industrial complex in Treforest, South Wales.

The company said the system was selected by Ceaton Security to meet the fire protection needs of a biomass boiler and multiple factory units on the site.

According to Cygnus Systems, the building’s insurance requirements meant a fire detection and alarm system had to be fitted quickly after the boiler’s installation.

Ceaton Security stated that the existing fire detection system in the main factory building was no longer operational, prompting a wider installation across the complex.

The A5 Hub contains a main factory, a small unit with the boiler and hopper, and seven additional smaller units, which Cygnus said made a wireless system preferable to avoid complex and costly cabling.

Selection of SmartNet-Pro for the project

Paul Biggs, Fire Division Technical Support at Ceaton Security, said: “During our site meeting, it became instantly evident that SmartNet-Pro would be the ideal solution for A5 Hub to fulfil the immediate requirements of the biomass boiler as well as expand to replace the existing non-operational fire detection and alarm system for the main factory and seven units.

“In total the installation took just over a week to complete, whereas if we had used a wired solution the installation would have taken a couple of months due to the scale and complexities of the site.

“Installing SmartNet is our preferred wireless solution.

Cygnus Systems stated that the installation addressed both the urgent need for boiler protection and the long-term requirement for reliable fire detection across all units.

The company added that the project demonstrates how wireless solutions can be deployed quickly in multi-unit industrial settings.

Landlord feedback on installation

Victoria Morton, Landlord of A5 Hub, said: “Through referral from one of my contractors, I contacted Ceaton Security who recommended SmartNet-Pro due to the fast speed required for installation with its minimal disruption.

“I was thoroughly impressed by the speed in which Ceaton Security were able to install SmartNet-Pro, as well as the lack of disruption installation caused to the site.

“I am currently in the process of arranging a pre-site meeting with Ceaton to install SmartNet in another one of my properties.

Cygnus Systems said that the positive feedback reflected the product’s installation speed and adaptability.

It added that the system can be applied across a variety of commercial and industrial sites with similar operational constraints.

SmartNet-Pro technical specifications

According to Cygnus Systems, SmartNet-Pro is the first EN 54 certified and fully wireless fire detection and alarm system in the world.

The company said the system can accommodate 511 devices and up to 96 zones on a single panel, with networking capability for up to five panels via software release code.

This allows for more than 2,500 devices to operate across a connected network.

Cygnus stated that the system uses its patented wireless mesh technology, featuring self-forming and self-healing capabilities with multipath redundancy and channel hopping.

It added that SmartNet-Pro can be installed up to twenty times faster than wired alternatives.

Wireless fire alarm supports safety during hospital refurbishment

Cygnus has reported that its wireless fire detection system SmartNet-100 has been installed at Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales.

The project was carried out by Shield Fire & Security during a refurbishment programme that required removal of the site’s previous wired alarm due to asbestos works.

SmartNet-100 was selected because it is a fully wireless, EN 54 certified solution that did not require hardwired interfaces or expanders.

According to Shield Fire & Security, the system allowed for uninterrupted progress with the asbestos works while maintaining full fire detection capability.

The full installation was completed in three days.

Coordinated installation completed without disruption

Shield Fire & Security stated that the hospital remained operational throughout the installation.

The company coordinated with Tilbury Douglas, the site administrators, to ensure no disruption to hospital staff or patients.

The works were divided into two phases: one day to install the system on the ground floor, and two days for the first floor, which covered a larger area.

Lee German, Life Safety Systems Manager at Shield Fire & Security, said: “The nature of this install necessitated a wireless solution, and as one of the very few truly wireless fire solutions on the market, choosing Cygnus was an obvious choice.”

He added:
“It was our first time installing SmartNet and we were extremely impressed by both the speed and ease of installation.
We highly recommend SmartNet, it has become our preferred wireless solution.”

System built for small to mid-scale projects

Cygnus described the SmartNet-100 system as suitable for small to medium scale buildings.

It operates using a wireless mesh network of radio devices, and features self-forming, self-healing network technology with multiple communication paths.

According to the manufacturer, SmartNet-100 can be up to 20 times faster to install than wired systems.

It includes several of the same functions as the larger SmartNet-Pro system but is designed for simpler deployments.

Fire detection coverage across both floors

SmartNet-100 was installed across the hospital’s ground and first floors.

According to Cygnus, the ground floor installation included 18 heat detectors and 10 manual call points.

On the first floor, 16 heat detectors and three manual call points were added.

Output modules and sound bases were also deployed across both floors to complete the alarm system coverage.

Installer training and future plans

Shield Fire & Security staff completed both basic and advanced training at the Cygnus Academy to qualify as certified installers.

The company said that due to the installation’s success, more of its personnel will attend future training courses to become Cygnus Certified Installers.

Kevin Oliver, Project Manager at Tilbury Douglas, said: “As a busy live hospital, it was imperative that the building could continue to operate as normally and as safely as possible.”
