NFPA warns home fires risk rises as Christmas trees stay up into January

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has urged US households to remove Christmas trees promptly after the holiday season, citing data showing that 35% of Christmas tree home fires happen in January.

The organisation said the risk increases the longer a tree remains indoors because it dries out and becomes more flammable over time.

Lorraine Carli, Vice President of Outreach and Advocacy at the National Fire Protection Association, said: “As much as we all enjoy the look and feel of Christmas trees in our homes, they’re large combustible items that have the potential to result in serious fires.

“The longer they’re in the home, the more of a risk they present.”

Why Christmas tree fires can be severe

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) said home fires involving Christmas trees are relatively uncommon but are more likely to be serious when they occur.

The organisation linked that severity to how quickly a dried-out tree can burn compared with a well-watered tree.

Carli said: “Fires that begin with Christmas trees represent a very small but notable part of the U.S. fire problem, considering that they are generally in use for a short time each year,”

Five-year averages and property losses

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) said that between 2020 and 2024 there was an estimated annual average of 143 home structure fires that began with Christmas trees.

The organisation said those fires resulted in seven civilian deaths and 13 civilian injuries.

The NFPA put direct property damage from these incidents at $15 million per year on average across the same period.

Disposal and packing guidance for decorations

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) advised using local community recycling programmes to dispose of Christmas trees where available.

The organisation said trees should not be kept in a garage or left outside.

The NFPA said people should unplug electrical decorations by gripping the plug, because pulling the cord can damage the wire and insulation.

The organisation advised inspecting light strings as they are packed away and discarding any sets with loose connections, broken sockets or cracked or bare wires.

The NFPA said sets of lights can be wrapped and stored in individual plastic bags or around cardboard.

The organisation advised storing electrical decorations in a dry place away from children and pets where they will not be damaged by water or dampness.

The Comité Technique International de prevention et d’extinction de Feu (CTIF) Fire Prevention Commission has reconvened in Slovenia and elected ddr. Aleš Jug as its chair during a three-day meeting from 24–26 September 2025.

The gathering in Gornja Radgona and Radenci marked the reestablishment of the Commission after a long pause in its activities.

CTIF Vice President Martin Nekula and Slovenian representative Tadej Šinkovec opened the meeting in Gornja Radgona and welcomed participants to the renewed forum.

Representatives from Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Greece, Finland and Lithuania attended in person, while members from Estonia joined the discussions online.

Petr Kučera provided an overview of Fire Safety Engineering in the Czech Republic, with particular attention to the role of fire modelling and expert assessments in building design and safety evaluations.

From Lithuania, Irma Meškauskaitė described the national fire prevention approach, including the overarching fire safety strategy and its reported effectiveness in improving outcomes.

Michal Valouch presented the Fire Prevention System in the Czech Republic, describing State Fire Supervision, Building Fire Prevention, Fire Inspections and Fire Investigations as core elements of the national framework.

Valouch also proposed future topics for Commission work, including the European Green Deal, photovoltaic systems, electromobility and high-rise and timber buildings.

A group discussion followed on how to make fire prevention data more comparable between countries, with members sharing national examples and agreeing that more harmonised data systems would support professional practice and international comparison.

SOBRA fair visit and Slovenian welcome

The meeting coincided with the 10th International Fair of Defence, Security, Protection and Rescue (SOBRA) in Gornja Radgona.

Participants visited SOBRA in the afternoon to see a live demonstration of the Fire Prevention Truck, which was presented by Tadej Šinkovec.

The session was also attended by Janko Cerkvenik, President of the Firefighters Association of Slovenia, who greeted the Commission and wished members a productive meeting.

Members elect chair to lead renewed work

The second day of the meeting took place in Radenci and opened with presentations from the Hellenic Fire Service.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS) has launched a short film to highlight the real impact of deliberate fire setting across the North East.

The campaign comes as the service prepares for one of its busiest periods of the year following the clocks going back on Sunday 26 October 2025.

According to TWFRS, firefighters responded to 683 deliberate fires between 17 October and 17 November 2024.

These incidents involved crews being mobilised to nearly 700 avoidable callouts, diverting resources from potentially life-threatening emergencies.

The new campaign aims to prevent a repeat of these numbers by raising public awareness of the consequences of anti-social fire behaviour.

Just A Normal Day film launched in Gateshead

At the centre of the initiative is Just A Normal Day, a short film commissioned and funded by TWFRS.

The project was developed in collaboration with Digital Voice, Gateshead Council and Gateshead Youth Justice Service.
