Single-loop Fire Panel launched by Advanced for EN Markets

AxisGo, a new-generation, single-loop fire panel that is versatile and offers premium features has been launched by Advanced. The panel provides access to Axis EN range performance, quality and ease of use, in a simple, non-networkable format.

Available to order in a range of countries where EN Standards apply, AxisGo is suitable for single-panel sites, from restaurants, bars and villas to small offices, shops, salons and surgeries.

The fire panel has been developed with the needs of integrators, engineers and end users in mind with an easy-fit chassis with unique door design enables fast fitting, familiar controls and menus. Intuitive new configuration software is designed to make programming quick and easy and a powerful design checker proves the system will work, even before visiting site. In addition, enhanced diagnostics could mean fewer faults, faster fixes, and better long-term performance.

Expert Insight: Weaving protection into the fabric of firefighting

IFSJ sat down with Amanda McLaren, Managing Director at Hainsworth Protective Fabrics to find out about the technical side of its flame-resistant fabrics

Let’s start at the beginning: can you tell me about the history of Hainsworth?

Hainsworth Protective Fabrics is a leading manufacturer of PPE fabrics, based at our Mill in West Yorkshire. Its parent company AW Hainsworth & Sons was established in 1783 as a manufacturer of protective woollen uniform cloth for the British army. Hainsworth cloth is synonymous with UK military history, and the iconic scarlet fabric is still worn by the Queen’s Guards outside Buckingham Palace today. Hainsworth now manufactures premium woollen textiles for a wide range of markets, including fashion, leisure and transport interiors, but it is through our Protective Fabrics brand that we continue to develop our expertise designing and developing world-class flame-retardant textiles for emergency services professionals.

At what point during its extensive history did Hainsworth become involved with the fire industry?

Hainsworth has been supplying fabric for firefighter uniforms since the earliest days of the fire service. In the 19th century, the most flame-retardant fabric on the market was Wool Melton, which was manufactured by Hainsworth for the British army. Naturally, when Eyre Massey Shaw established the London Fire Brigade in the late 1800s he selected Wool Melton to be used for the firefighters’ protective uniforms.

We continued to supply Wool Melton to UK fire brigades throughout the early 20th century up until the 1970s, when we introduced PPE textiles woven using man-made flame-resistant fibres to the market. From there we continued to develop fabrics that delivered greater and greater levels of flame protection, working closely with firefighters to make sure we understood the changing requirements of their role. Today Hainsworth Protective Fabrics are worn by firefighters around the World, and our amazing Product Development Team continue to push the boundaries of innovative fabric technology.

What are the main uses for Hainsworth fabrics in the fire market?

We have designed and developed fabrics for use across multiple firefighting scenarios, including: structural; wildland; electric arc; urban search and rescue; water rescue; and road traffic collisions.

Our hero product is our TITAN fabric system. TITAN is a fibre structure from which we have developed a range of outer shell fabrics for garments across the emergency services. TITAN fabrics range from TITAN 1241 – a lightweight textile for use in technical rescue and riot police coveralls, where flexibility is paramount – to TITAN 1220, a highly breathable yet strong fabric designed to reduce the risk of heat stress for structural firefighters. Our TITAN 1260 is a premium outer shell fabric woven using Aramids and PBI fibres, increasing thermal integrity while remaining flexible and wearable, and is worn by today’s London Fire Brigade – a far cry from the Wool Melton they started out with.

We also offer a pioneering fabric solution for wildland firefighting PPE – ECO-DRY Shield. The fabric was developed following the introduction of new wildland standards in Australia, and is designed to provide the high mobility and flexibility needed for prolonged call-outs in external environments. ECO-DRY Shield is now the fabric of choice for wildland firefighters in South Australia, which sees some of the harshest firefighting conditions in the World. We recently also started supplying the fabric to firefighters in the UK for the first time.

All of our fabrics are created with the specific needs of the end user in mind and we take the time to listen to firefighters when developing any new products. For example, our AGILE fabric structure was developed in response to firefighter concerns about chemical contamination and exposure to carcinogens. AGILE weaves together protective fibres in a tight structure that provides maximum resistance to liquid penetration and prevents harmful particles from being absorbed into the garment. It is also incredibly strong and durable, allowing for the firefighter to wash their kit over 100 times and still have it perform as well as if it were new.

Can you talk a little about the technical aspects of Hainsworth fabrics?

At Hainsworth we have an unrivalled knowledge of the unique qualities of different fibres and how they can be woven together to maximise their benefits, built up over 250 years of textile manufacturing.

An example of this would be the AGILE fabric structure I described above. We used our long history of fabric knowledge to weave together flame-retardant fibres in a structure inspired by the twill used in classic raincoats, resulting in a fabric that allows for maximum water runoff and protects from harmful liquid chemicals.

We call our approach to textile development Fibre Positioning Technology – the unique placement of fibres resulting in fabric greater than the sum of its parts.

This methodology applies to every product we develop. TITAN was designed as an open and breathable structure that allows for the flow of perspiration moisture, helping the wearer to stay cool and clear-headed. The insulating pockets of air created as a result of this process also increase the wearer’s protection from heat and flame.

In addition to knowing where to position fibres, we also have an innate understanding of how to combine different materials to meet the specific requirements of the wearer. ECO-DRY Shield, for example, is a unique mixture of synthetic flame-resistant fibres and premium merino wool. Nomex and Lenzing FR provide thermal stability, keeping the wearer protected, while wool wicks away moisture and allows for a consistent body temperature. The different fibres combine to create a flexible, comfortable, yet flame retardant textile perfect for the modern wildland firefighter.

Finally: tell me little about your own background and your future plans for Hainsworth?

Since 1989, I have been working within the Engineering Sector; focusing on my chosen career path – Operations and Supply Chain Management. During 1999, I took my first step into the Textile Sector, working as a Supply Chain Manager and subsequently as the Operations Director, for James Heal & Company – a Global Leader of Textile Testing Equipment.

In 2008, I left the Business in to explore Directorship positions within larger Manufacturing environments – covering both the Automotive and Leisure Sectors., each one of them a leading UK Brand. However, I missed Textiles and returned to James Heal in 2014, to support the Owner to complete a Business Sale – subsequently succeeding him as the new Managing Director of James Heal in 2014, under the ownership of Battery Ventures – a VC Company based in Boston, USA. During the following 6 years’, I was fortunate enough to travel to many Countries, visiting our Agents and end Customers’ – which of course, were often Textile Mills. The top and bottom line grew to plan and I learned a lot about running a successful Business.

In late 2020, I noted AW Hainsworth were looking for a new Managing Director for their Business – AWH was actually a Customer and Supplier to James Heal, so I was more than familiar with the Mill and the amazing Products produced. It was ‘hand in glove’ as a fit and as such, given the challenging post-pandemic and Brexit environment, I was thrilled to be appointed into this exciting role, in April 2021.

Since then, with the support of both the shareholders and a highly competent and experienced Team, I have been able to redefine our growth strategy and determine a number of new opportunities for the Business. We exceeded last year’s Business Plan and have set out a new 3-year plan, which demonstrates growth through an ongoing investment programme. We have already invested in a state-of-the-art R&D and Quality Control Laboratory and have placed orders for new Raising & Cropping Machinery, along with a new Loom for our Leisure Business. We have full commitment to a Sustainable Business Model; putting our people at the centre of investment strategy – this includes a newly defined Apprenticeship Model and investment in existing skills, to ensure a multi-skilled workforce for the future. All in all, it is a very exciting time for the company and I am thoroughly enjoying steering the ship.

British advanced fire protection systems specialist acquired by Lindab

Lindab has strengthened its UK operations with the acquisition of DiSYS Technologies Ltd. With the acquisition, Lindab gains access to advanced fire protection technology within ventilation systems.

DiSYS Technologies has developed control systems for real time monitoring of fire and smoke dampers in ventilation systems. Units can be added and removed from the fire zones which gives the customer the flexibility to modify their system over time.

DiSYS Technologies also offers maintenance of fire protection products in ventilation systems and has several customer contracts in England and Ireland. With the acquisition, Lindab can create a complete fire safety offering with products, control systems and maintenance.

Ola Ringdahl, President and CEO of Lindab, said: “Fire protection is an area that is growing in importance and we are very happy to welcome DiSYS Technologies to Lindab.

“With their experience and expertise in fire protection, they will strengthen us in the UK market. Lindab’s products are well suited to be integrated with DiSYS’ systems and we already have a well-functioning collaboration today. DiSYS Technologies are based in Llanelli in southwest Wales. The company has annual sales of approximately SEK 18 million and an operating margin that is higher than Lindab’s operating margin. DiSYS Technologies has 10 employees. The acquisition is financed through own funds.

The UK’s most fire-prone non-residential buildings revealed

Arinite Health and Safety has revealed the most fire-prone buildings in the UK by type in a new study.

It looked at the 11,916 primary fires – those which occurred at non-derelict buildings, involved fatalaties, casualties or rescues, and was attended by five or more pumping appliances – at non-residential buildings to detetmine what building types were most prone to outbreaks of fire.

1: Private non-residential buildings

The buildings that have the most fires are private non-residential buildings. These types of buildings include: private garages, private garden sheds, private greenhouses and private summer houses.

Garages are ordinarily used for storage of household overflow, such as tools, seasonal clothing and Christmas decorations. Sheds are also used for garden tools such as lawnmowers, which may require petrol to power them. Boxes stacked with decorations, clothing, and petrol pose a greater fire risk because the materials act as catalysts.

With a high concentration of combustible materials, the fire service attended  3,587 incidents in 2020/21. Of the 3,587 incidents attended, 80.2% were accidental compared to 19.8% that were deliberate. 

2: Industrial premises

Industrial premises includes: Industrial manufacturing, Industrial processing, Laboratory/research, Mines and quarries – above ground, Public utilities, Vehicle repair, Warehouses and bulk storage.

The fire service attended 1,749 fires in 2020-21, with 91% of them being accidental and 9% being deliberate. The ratio of accidental to deliberate fires on industrial premises is the largest gap of any building type. 

Industrial premises will have a health and safety policy including a fire risk assessment and dedicated fire personnel, meaning that the amount of deliberate fires started will be reduced. 

3: Other public buildings

Other public buildings include: Car parks, Public admin/security/safety, Public toilets, Religious buildings, Sports pavilions and Transport buildings.

These buildings were attended by fire services 1,100 times during 2020-2021. Deliberate fires were significantly higher at these types of premises with 71.1% of fires being set intentionally. The remaining 28.9% of fires were accidental.

4: Retail premises

Ranging from small independent shops to supermarkets and retail complexes, retail premises are the fourth most at risk building.  Retail premises were attended by the fire service 1,075 times throughout 2020 – 2021. The majority of fires were accidental (82.8%) compared to deliberate (17.2%).

Home improvement retail facilities store a high level of flammable materials such as white spirit and fire lighters. All retail premises will have fire safety protocols and tighter security that other building types, reducing the amount of deliberate fires. 

5: Communal living

Communal living includes: Boarding school accommodation, Military/barracks, Monastery/convent, Nurses’/Doctors’ accommodation, Other residential home, Residential home, Sheltered housing and Student hall of residence. 907 fires were attended by the fire service. 13.1% of these fires were deliberate compared to the 86.9% that were accidental. 

6: Food and drink premises

Restaurants and takeaways use flames to cook food daily, which explains why 889 fires were attended, with 88.1% of the fires being  accidental and 11.9%, deliberate.

7: Agricultural premises

Agricultural premises have many purposes including rearing livestock and horticultural cultivation. Large open spaces full of combustible materials such as seeds, dry grass and wheat can lead to unmanageable fires. Combining the combustible materials with wooden barn structures contribute to the amount of fires farms experience every year. 

Between 2020 and 2021, 536 fires were attended by the fire service in the UK. Of the 536 fires, 80.4% were accidental and 19.6% were deliberate.

8: Hospitals and medical care

Hospitals and medical care facilities are the 8th most flammable building in the UK. Faulty equipment and overloading on electrical outlets are some of the biggest causes of hospital and medical care facility fires. The fire service attended 502 fires at hospitals and medical centres, 71.1% of these fires were accidental and 28.3% were deliberate.

9: Hotels, boarding houses, hostels

Hotels, boarding houses, hostels etc. includes: Animal boarding, Boarding house and B&B for homeless/asylum seeker, Boarding house/B&B, Caravan site – in caravan/camper van, Hostel, Hotel/Motel, Other holiday residence and Youth hostel.

436 fires were attended by the fire service across the UK, 79.4% of incidents were accidental compared to the 20.6% that were deliberate.

10: Offices and call centres 

The 10th most combustible building type consists of offices and call centres. Faulty equipment, clutter and human error are among the top reasons why fires break out in offices and call centres.  During 2020- 2021, 334 fires were attended across the UK. 18.9% of these fires were accidental which is a large contrast to the 81.1% that were deliberate.

International Association of Fire Fighters issues statement over turnout gear health risks

The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) and the Metropolitan Fire Chiefs Association (Metro Chiefs) have issued joint statement advising members of the adverse health risks associated with fire fighter turnout gear.

The statement follows recent studies which show that all three layers of the protective clothing contain Per and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) chemicals, which have been linked to cancer – the leading cause of fire fighter deaths.

The IAFF and Metro Chiefs have now encouraged members to reduce their exposure to PFAS by limiting use of turnout gear only to emergency responses where its protection is a necessity.

The association pointed out that wearing all PPE and self-contained breathing apparatuses during firefighting, overhaul, and working in smoke remains the best first line of defense to protect from fireground contaminants until PFAS-free alternatives are available.

“This is the challenge of our generation, and if we don’t act, it will be the challenge of our children’s generation,” said IAFF General President Edward A. Kelly.

“We can’t just salute in front of the church and fight for better benefits. We need to combat what’s killing us and I am committed to making sure we do everything we can to extinguish cancer from the fire service. That starts with removing PFAS from our turnout gear and, until PFAS-free options exist, reducing our exposure as best we can.”

Chief Robert Rocha, president of the Metropolitan Fire Chiefs Association added: “The health and welfare of our firefighters remains the top priority of the Metro Chiefs.

“In conjunction with the removal of PFAS from Personal Protective Equipment, we encourage all fire service organizations and fire fighters to take the appropriate precautions to reduce and eliminate cancer in the fire service.”

The statement also urged fire fighters not to bring turnout gear into firehouse living areas and to be in the habit of transporting gear in sealed containers or bags not stored in the passenger compartment, to wash hands after handling turnout gear and to clean apparatus cabs regularly and after every fire.

The joint statement concluded: “The International Association of Fire Fighters and the Metropolitan Fire Chiefs Association stand shoulder to shoulder in our combined efforts to rid occupational cancer from the fire service. The time has long passed for occupational cancer to be accepted as “part of the job.” You can do your part, and we urge you to take these steps to reduce your exposure.

“We must raise our collective voices and diligently work toward a day when firefighting gear will not be a source of fire fighter illness.”

Nigerian Society of Engineers embarks on fire safety campaign

The Victoria Island branch of The Nigerian Society of Engineers has begun a week-log engineering programme that aims to increase community awareness on digital technology skills and fire safety.

The chairman of the branch, Engr. Emeka Benson Ibeh, told a press conference that the essence of this gathering is to intimate the public about our engineering week.

Ibeh said the purpose of the week is to give back to the community in terms of skill digital awareness, educate them on what the society does and also to focus on the theme of this year’s engineering week, which is on communication and digital economy the role of engineers.

The five days of activity will include a public lecture in honour of the branch’s immediate past president, Engr. Babagana Muhammed, a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, as well an induction of 59 new corporate members.

The branch has also organised a free digital skills acquisition training for its young engineers and SMEs interested to participate as a way of giving back to the community.

Thursday will see the AGM and election, bringing a new executive committee on board to govern the branch for the next year. Finally, friday will see a market fire safety campaign on how to prevent fire outbreaks with the use of basic fire safety techniques augmented with digital solutions.

On this year’s theme, “Advancing the Frontiers of Communication and Digital Economy in Nigeria: The role of the Nigerian Engineer”, Ibeh said: “The reality in doing business not just in Lagos, Nigeria but the world at large is now transiting from analogue to digitalisation influenced by the internet, new technologies such as blockchain and other digital solutions, and it has come to stay with us. The earlier we embrace it, the better for all of us”.

Delhi Fire Service clears building fire safety proposals

The Delhi Fire Service (DFS) has cleared seven proposals for fire safety systems in buildings being constructed under the Government’s Central Vista Project. The proposals were cleared by the DFS after the building designs were presented for approval by the government as senior official said.

Each of the seven proposals consist of plans for more than two building. These buildings include New Parliament Building, New PMO building, Amenity block, and Common Central secretariat being made under the Central Vista project, and a few other office buildings.

various in-built fire-fighting arrangements are recommended to be installed in the buildings such as a fire exit, a hose reel, a wet riser, hydrants, an automatic sprinkler system, internal hydrants and yard hydrants, pumping arrangements, and captive water storage for fire-fighting, the fire officers said.

Automatic fire detection and alarming system, manual-operated electric fire alarm system and a public address system are also recommended in the National Building Code of India Chapter 4 on fire and fire safety.

“All the recommendations suggested are being followed and implemented in the building designs which had altered,” the officer said. Atul Garg, Director of DFS said.

“The buildings under the Central Vista project have state-of-the-art technology as far as the fire department is considered. We have tried to provide the best infrastructure for the fire safety system. This is going to have in-built fire safety systems with a set up of a huge fire control room as well.”

The fire officials said that initially it was not easy to convince the architects of the project to make certain specific changes in terms of fire safety system as they were of the view that any such changes could affect the beauty of the buildings.

DuPont announces Nomex Innovation award winners

DuPont Personal Protection has recognised the latest in Nomex design ingenuity during the 2022 Nomex Innovation Awards at Interschutz.

The seventh annual award ceremony was held in Hannover, Germany on 21 June and highlighted collaboration between European Nomex partners and DuPont in developing solutions made with Nomex in applications.

The 2022 Nomex Innovation Awards included four main categories, including a new category, Nomex Xtreme Performance; in addition to Sustainability; Comfort; and Other Innovations. This year’s category applications included structural firefighting and wildland firefighting.

Winners in the structural firefighting category included:

SCANTEX Crossfire, Outer layer built with DuPont Nomex 3DP Plus and DuPont Kevlar. This new outershell solution in the Nomex Xtreme Performance category provides superior durability and comfort; built-in heat and flame resistance; and unmatched mechanical strength.

S-GARD, SWISSGARD 2.0, Outer layer built with DuPont Nomex RSK, Inner layer built with DuPont Nomex Comfort. This garment is optimized for greater mobility and enhanced comfort.

Winners in the wildland firefighting category included:

SIOEN, Oxylus NYO wildland firefighting gear, garment made of a three-layer laminate, built with DuPont Nomex Comfort Ripstop, particulate barrier built with DuPont Nomex Nano, Inner layer built with DuPont Nomex Knit. This solution in the Nomex Xtreme Performance category is the first wildland gear with a particulate barrier to be introduced to the wildland firefighting market.

Heinrich Vorndamme O.H.G., Fire Fox Twin, Outer layer built with DuPont Nomex VRW. This gear is an innovative combination of layers designed to meet the requirements of both wildland firefighting and technical rescue. One layer of this solution can be worn by itself for wildland firefighting; the other layer can be worn by itself for technical rescue; and when both layers are worn together, it is a dual-purpose garment.

Advanced appoints new Sales Director

Mike Cottam has been appointed as Sales Director at fire protection solutions company Advanced.

Cottam joins Advanced from global science-based technology company 3M where over the past 19 years he has held a variety of roles covering sales and marketing, integration and Lean Six Sigma.

In his latest position as EMEA Segment and Channel Leader within 3M’s Abrasive Systems Division based in Dubai, Cottam headed up the sales and marketing strategy to expand the division’s customer base into key metal working segments across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

In his new role, Mike will draw on his wide-ranging experience to lead Advanced’s sales, marketing, customer service and technical support teams in delivering excellent customer experience and accelerated growth in new and existing markets.

Commenting on his appointment, Cottam said: “Advanced has a clear purpose of creating a safer future, something I’m very passionate about and eager to play my part in achieving. I am excited to be joining the company at a time when, despite a challenging economic backdrop, the business is continuing to thrive and expand into important new areas of fire and life safety. Bangkok pubs temporarily shuttered after fire safety inspections

Just over one fifth of the pubs in Bangkok that became the subject of the fire-safety inspections carried out across the capital city following a blaze in Chonburi were temporarily closed last week.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt had ordered inspections of entertainment venues in every district of the capital and 83 of the 400 Bangkok venues inspected have been shuttered after inspectors found problems with fire exits and escape routes.

The move follows a blaze at an unlicensed pub in Chonburi’s Sattahip district which left 15 people dead and 37 injured.

Governor Chadchart, who is an engineer by profession, said escape routes should be obvious and clearly signposted to aid victims’ chance of survival in dangerous situations. He ordered further inspections in a bid to weed out Bangkok entertainment venues that are operating illegally.

Chadchart said the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration will ensure thorough inspections across the city. Authorities have ordered inspections of nightspots across the state.
