Bosch Safety Systems Designer update enables easy import of fire alarm system devices

Bosch has released a new software version of Safety Systems Designer enabling Architects, planners and system integrators to easily import fire alarm system devices from floor plans into the Safety Systems Designer software.

In addition, Bosch has launched a new, free plugin that enables automatic data transfer between AutoCAD software and Bosch Safety Systems Designer. The free Bosch SSD Plugin is the only tool of its type offered by any fire alarm system manufacturer.

AutoCAD software is the most frequently used platform for building- and fire alarm systems design covering all planning phases. The Bosch SSD Plugin changes a time-consuming process from the users’ daily work routine into a stream-lined experience.

With the new plugin, the process is now fast, reliable and simple, enabling better project design and synchronization at any scale so fire alarm systems can be imported no matter the size of the floor plan or building project.

The Bosch SSD Plugin includes an extensive SSD CAD blocks library allowing designers to pick icons from more than 150 of EN 54 fire alarm system devices. These can then be placed comfortably onto floor plans through the AutoCAD blocks palette. The plugin can also be used with any customer specific CAD block, so that these can be amended and then transferred to Safety System Designer.

To improve the efficiency even further, every fire alarm system device can be assigned to a panel as well as to a loop in the context menu of the AutoCAD application and Safety Systems Designer automatically keeps these assignments to panel or loop after the import.

After import to Safety Systems Designer, users can continue further in-depth planning such as preparing a bill of material, a tender text, the battery calculation, or a system viability check.

The new version of Safety Systems Designer and the Bosch SSD Plugin for AutoCAD software are available immediately now.

Society of Fire Protection Engineers announces newest fellows

The Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), the professional society for fire protection and fire safety engineering, has announced its newest class of Fellows and 2022 award recipients. 

Fellow membership represents the highest professional honor of SFPE and is given to individuals who have amassed significant accomplishments and stature in fire protection engineering.  SFPE members elevated to the status of Fellow in 2022 are:

FIA releases annual Market Conditions Survey for UK fire market

The Fire Industry Association has released its annual Market Conditions Survey to assess the current market conditions within the UK fire market.

The survey examines the state of the fire industry from all businesses within and provides insight into the current trends in the levels of skilled to unskilled workers, employment of apprentices, payment periods and changes in supplier costs – plus the opportunity for individuals to voice their opinion on the things that matter to them most within the fire industry.

The FIA is asking businesses working within the fire sector to contribute to the survey, as this will form an essential piece of research and help predict the market trends within the industry. 

Once all the data from the survey has been collected, the responses will be collated to create a report that will be freely available to all.  The results will be anonymised in the report so that individuals can freely have their say.

Magirus announces ‘Experience The Future’ Roadshow tour

Firefighting vehicle manufacturer Magirus has announced its “Experience The Future” Roadshow tour set to make stops across Europe later this year.

Magirus will be launching its innovative roadshow across Europe from September on. Under the motto “Experience The Future”, firefighters and interested trade visitors will have the opportunity to experience a cross-section of the highly innovative product portfolio.

In the months to follow, the roadshow will be coming to events in four countries. The initial start will be at the jubilee of the Magirus Lohr subsidiary in Premstätten near Graz in Austria from 01 to 03 September 2022. 

In the further course, the roadshow will stop at the following locations, among others:

Fire protection company Bull Products appoints new CEO

Bull Products has announced the appointment of Sandy Damm as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) whose primary role will be to spearhead the company’s growth plans within the fire protection market.

Damm brings more than 25 years of experience and is an entrepreneurial individual with vast international expertise across several continents, including Europe, Middle East, North America and Asia-Pacific.

Bull Products is recognised in the industry for manufacturing and supplying fire safety equipment, namely wireless fire alarms, extinguishers, first responder trolleys and other associated products primarily to the construction industry.

Damm will lead the next stage of the business’s growth plans, with the intention of increasing the size of the organisation fivefold by 2028. He has previously undertaken roles including Managing Director, CEO and Divisional Managing Director during his career, and in turn has held P&L responsibilities ranging from £5m to £90m revenue on behalf of privately invested, family-owned and multinational firms.

Commenting on his new appointment, he said: “From the very beginning of the recruitment process, I was attracted to the family values of the company and the quality of the people within the organisation. MOBOTIX M16 thermal cameras granted VdS certification

Konica Minolta’s Video Solution Services (VSS) and powerful MOBOTIX M16 TR (Thermal Radiometry) cameras have been certified by the VdS Fire Protection Institute.

The certification recognises the ability to accurately detect a fire, or the increased risk even before it starts, from a distance of up to 5km

Based in Germany, VdS Schadenverhütung GmbH is Europe’s largest institution for corporate security and safety, specialising in fire protection, security, and natural disaster prevention.

Konica Minolta’s thermal TR technology delivers fast and low-cost installation. In addition, the system also reacts more quickly, with heat being detected before it even reaches the ceiling. Additionally, unlike aspirating smoke detectors, the MOBOTIX M16 TR is not dependent on the development of smoke, enabling detection much sooner in the timeline of the developing event.

The Konica Minolta VSS and MOBOTIX M16 TR solution has a range of applications within a variety of environments such as monitoring of outside areas (including large and cluttered areas, material and bulk goods storage, warehouses, and hard-to-reach areas with low light or visibility), and indoor areas (such as large rooms and buildings and public areas such as schools, airports, and workplaces).

Digitising The Golden Thread to ensure fire safety standards

Robert Norton, UK Team Leader at PlanRadar talks the digitisation of The Golden Thread

The UK government has set out plans to introduce a stringent regulatory regime to create and maintain a ‘Golden Thread’ of information. The Golden Thread is the information about a building that allows someone to understand it. Therefore, keeping the building and its residents safe, as well as ensuring the building information is accurate, easily understandable, can be accessed by those who need it and is up to date.

Implementation of the Golden Thread will require individuals and organisations responsible for a building to have good information management systems and a clear understanding of how information management supports building safety. Going forward this will need to be embedded across the sector to ensure greater levels of safety. PlanRadar, a platform first established in 2013 as a means for the construction industry to digitise all onsite procedures, has positioned itself as the digital solution for The Golden Thread.

At its most basic, PlanRadar is a means to capture evidence on the go and create a tamper-proof audit trail, as well as acting as a communication platform for fire-safety measures across digital plans and Building Information Models.

It is designed to immediately capture and resolve risks on-site by: easily documenting facts during fire risk assessments, retrieving fire protection documents at any time, completing fire risk assessment forms, capturing evidence on the go, communicating fire safety measures, documenting passive fire prevention, creating fire safety documents at the touch of a button and ensuring compliance and accountability above all else.

Fire Door Inspections

NFC tags are quickly gaining popularity in the construction and real estate industries for their ability to improve on-site information and data capture. These tags use near field communication (NFC) technology, a communication technology which allows the transfer of information between two chips, derived from RFID (Radio Frequency Identification). In simple terms, when you bring your mobile device near an NFC tag, information stored on the tag is easily accessible right on your device. PlanRadar integrates with this technology, installed on or built into fire doors, enabling the tag to be scanned by an individual to bring up the door´s full audit history. This connects to a ticket in the platform showing the exact location and audit details on the building plan.

Norton says fire door surveyors use the platform to document passive fire prevention and complete fire risk assessment forms. On the benefits of NFC tags, he says: “If the door has an NFC tag, fantastic, you can upload that inspection back to the NFC tag and create the audit trail. If they don’t have the NFC tag, then this could be a great chance to create a digital record.” He adds that some fire consultancy specialists are installing NFC tags into hospitals and schools to ensure there is an up-to-date digital record on a system.

“PlanRadar enables fire inspection teams to gather building information quickly and efficiently, whilst significantly reducing the time required to process and present this data. A typical fire door inspection takes 5-10 minutes per door. We’ve streamlined that process to 1-2 minutes per door inspection to record the data.”

Quality Assurance

Clients who are in need of an External Wall System Fire Review certificate (EWS1) are using PlanRadar to conduct Quality Assurance (QA) processes on site. Users can put a pin directly onto the plans of the drawings at the exact location that the EWS1 inspection is going to take place. They can then do a QA form, based on each individual location.  

“Every time a ticket is received by a sub-contractor to carry out work, they can upload all the corresponding photographs of work completed, and then the site manager can come in and approve it,” says Norton. “You then have a specific sign-off field for an external inspector. Only they are allowed to sign off this line to say that the work has been done to the necessary standard.”

This, he says, is where organisations like Kiwa come in to see all the historic data related to each pin on the plan, they will then note down any additional site observations, certify it and close off the certificate or issue a report. “A Fire Assessment Report (FRA) in our system, once they go back to the home office, takes 20 seconds to generate,” says Norton. “Normally an FRA report takes a couple of days for someone to send off.”

Fire Risk Assessments

Someone going to do a Fire Risk Assessment (FRA) can carry out the full inspection using PlanRadar, uploading paper forms to PlanRadar, reducing time spent on paperwork, with the ability to highlight pins on plans where applicable. Forms can be custom built, enabling teams to complete them in the field. If there are actions that need to be carried out, they can be made via ‘live recommended actions’ on the platform which can be sent back to the client or main contractor. They can then close these actions out within the system and upload return photographs as a proof of completion that can either be inspected electronically or alternatively a further site visit can take place.

The platform has automatic read receipts so if, for example, a contractor tries to say they have not read something PlanRadar shows that not only have they read it, but they have signed it off to say they have read it, ensuring accountability for these actions. Communication is automatically logged for a secure, tamper proof audit trail.

The PlanRadar platform is free of charge to customise. Norton points out that this is going to be a huge requirement because the system needs to be adaptive and agile at any point, so if there is a new piece of legislation, users can customise the system free of charge, with no hinderance or any major downtime.

A universal platform

At this stage, Norton says that PlanRadar works with clients to support their own needs and requirements to meet the obligations of the Golden Thread. PlanRadar is flexible enough to recognise that each client needs a tailored approach to how information is collected, collated, and stored and each needs different processes. 

PlanRadar has reached out to influential figures within the fire industry as well as building safety regulators to understand how the platform can be designed and updated to be totally fit for purpose and relevant to the needs of the end user. Another one of the questions he says people are talking about a lot is competence: “It has become a key cornerstone of all the fire safety regulations. You still need competent people to deliver even with the very best systems in place.”

“We want to make the system as simple as possible so that anyone with the right qualifications and therefore the right so-called competence (possibly the Responsible Person, as laid out in the Building Safety Act) can then work through the system, record the information they need and take out the relevant information in report format.”

FireMate eyes UK growth following Halma acquisition

In the year following its acquisition by industry conglomerate Halma plc, Fire industry asset management and software specialist FireMate has experienced rapid growth, and has now set its sights on further expansion in 2022-23, spurred by growing demand for its products resulting from changes in UK legislation and best practice.

The Australian business, which specialises in fire protection maintenance software and remote fire alarm management, and its UK subsidiary were acquired in 2020 as part of Halma’s ambition to offer a full spectrum of fire systems and services through its various subsidiaries, including Ampac, Apollo, Advanced, FFE and Hyfire.

FireMate is now seeking to capitalise on the rapid evolution of the UK marketplace, where the Fire Safety Act 2021 and PAS 9980 have placed onerous new obligations on fire installers, building owners and Responsible Persons (RPs), especially in the multi-unit residential sector.

Rob Thomas, Managing Director of FireMate, explained: “The UK market is going through a challenging period of adjustment, yet it is also exciting as we already have a stable of products that can help to meet the challenges presented by changes to legislation, regulation and best practice.

Fire safety advice issued following flat blaze in Sussex

Crawley Borough Council has teamed up with West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (WSFRS) to offer safety advice to residents of Milton Mount recently.

The large block of flats was the site of a fire last month. While it was contained to one flat and there were no injuries, the council and WSFRS agreed to join forces to provide fire safety information to tenants and leaseholders.

The visits saw council officers joining Green Watch from Crawley Fire Station, WSFRS’s Community Prevention and Training Team and volunteers to inspect communal areas, offer Safe and Well visits to residents and give general safety advice.

A Safe and Well visit is completely free and focuses on four key areas:

  • Identify and be aware of the potential fire risks within your home
  • Know what to do to reduce or prevent these risks
  • Put together an escape plan in case a fire does break out and ensure you have working smoke alarms
  • General Health and Wellbeing advice

Three visits were undertaken with four booked in by residents for the coming weeks.

Councillor Sandra Buck, Cabinet member for Housing at Crawley Borough Council, said: “While the fire was contained, it will have understandably worried residents. The visit was a great chance to hear from the experts about fire safety and to take simple steps to stay safe, including having a working smoke alarm and testing it regularly.”

Steve Burns, Station Manager at Crawley Fire Station said: “Our collaborative visit to Milton Mount was a great opportunity for all the services and departments involved to share information and engage with the residents at Milton Mount. It gave us the opportunity to reassure residents that the Housing Team at Crawley Borough Council is working hard to make Milton Mount the safest it can be and for them to understand that West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is not only there to deal with incidents but to offer support and advice after and in the future.”

National Collaborative PPE Framework celebrates five years of success

The National Collaborative PPE Framework is celebrating five years of success of delivering high-quality PPE to Fire and Rescue Services (FRSs) across the UK. 

Launched in June 2017 to streamline the PPE procurement process, the scheme has since delivered protective clothing to around two thirds of FRSs across the country, equating to more than 30,000 firefighters.

Created with a view to sharing best practice and delivering efficiencies, the National Framework is managed by the National Fire Chiefs Council’s National Procurement Hub’s Lead Authority for PPE and Clothing Category at Kent Fire and Rescue Service, with PPE supplied by MSA Bristol – a global leader in the design and manufacture of PPE for firefighters.

The PPE range includes Full Structural Ensemble, a Layered Jacket, Rescue Jacket and USAR Ensemble, with selected styles combining innovative and ergonomic designs with the use of high-performance fabrics and fibres from leading suppliers such as WL Gore, PBI Performance Products and Hainsworth.   

By taking part in the scheme, FRSs have access to high quality PPE with the reassurance that it has been independently evaluated and tested.  Whilst purchase-only contracts are available, the majority have opted for managed services contracts, whereby kit is regularly cleaned, inspected, decontaminated and repaired at one of MSA Bristol’s three in-house UK Service Centres.

Fire and Rescue Services that have recently signed up to the scheme include North Yorkshire FRS, Leicestershire FRS and Oxfordshire FRS.  

Sarah Walsh, Framework Manager, commented: “The National Collaborative PPE Framework has proved a huge success, resulting in time and cost efficiencies for Fire Services around the country, whilst providing robust and comfortable PPE protection for firefighters on the ground, as well as longer-term health protection through the regular professional servicing of these garments.

Both ourselves and MSA Bristol are always looking to innovations, as well as to the sector’s requirements, to ensure that any technical refreshes are looked into further for the benefits to end users. It is even more relevant now than it was in the beginning of the Framework, when more research is published on subjects like contaminants, we look at how we can incorporate the recommendations made into the Framework.”
