Electrical safety risks identified in energy-saving devices sold online

An investigation by consumer organisation Which? has found that multiple plug-in “energy-saving” devices sold on popular online platforms fail basic electrical safety checks.

The Guardian reported that Which? tested eight devices purchased from Amazon, eBay, AliExpress, Shein and Temu and found none of them performed as claimed.

According to Which?, the tested devices not only failed to deliver energy savings but also presented safety hazards including poor soldering, excessive lead levels and general non-compliance with UK safety regulations.

Products pose fire and electrocution risks

According to the investigation, these devices are illegal under current UK safety regulations and pose risks of fire and electric shock.

Warnings regarding plug-in devices making energy-saving claims have circulated for years.

The Office for Product Safety and Standards previously issued product recalls after identifying “a serious risk” from similar products.

Which? said its latest findings show that many of the devices use misleading language to describe how they work, such as “voltage stabilisation” and “current balancing”, with no credible supporting evidence.

Online platforms remove listings following alert

Which? said all platforms contacted during the investigation had removed the relevant product listings.

An eBay spokesperson told The Guardian: “We used a number of our own measures aimed at preventing unsafe and prohibited listings, and as a result had removed the listings in question before Which? notified us.”

Shein stated: “Upon learning of any claims, Shein immediately removes the item(s) from its site as a precaution while the company investigates.”

Temu said that its internal monitoring system had already flagged and removed the product before Which? made contact.

An Amazon spokesperson said: “We require all products to comply with applicable laws and regulations. These products have been removed.”

AliExpress also confirmed removal of the product listings following Which?’s tests.

Calls for stronger legislation to ensure product safety

Which? said its findings point to the need for stricter legislation to hold online marketplaces accountable for products sold through their platforms.

The government’s product regulation and metrology bill is currently progressing through parliament.

Which? called for the bill to introduce “clear legal responsibilities” for online marketplaces, along with “tough enforcement, including heavy fines” when unsafe products are found on their platforms.

A spokesperson said: “More concerningly, they failed basic electrical safety standards, meaning they are illegal and potentially dangerous.”

NFPA expands US electrical inspection network with Colorado chapter

Colorado chapter joins NFPA Electrical Inspection Section

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has confirmed that the Association for Colorado Inspectors is now an Electrical Inspection Section (EIS) Affiliate Chapter.

According to NFPA, the Colorado-based group will support electrical inspection professionals across the state by providing access to training, education, and networking resources.

The NFPA’s EIS Affiliate Chapter network includes regional associations that collaborate with the NFPA to support code enforcement and inspection personnel.

The Colorado chapter is the fourth to join the programme.

NFPA and Colorado inspectors aim to address electrical hazards

The chapter aims to support the state’s electrical enforcement community in applying NFPA 70, also known as the National Electrical Code (NEC), and other safety standards.

Tim McClintock, NFPA regional electrical specialist, said: “NFPA is pleased to welcome its latest EIS Affiliate Chapter.

“Through this relationship, NFPA and the Colorado electrical enforcement community can unite efforts, using our collective voice to help address today’s current and emerging electrical challenges to advance safety in the community.”

McClintock said the chapter “actively supports electrical inspection professionals who are charged with understanding the NEC and how its requirements are applied”.

Chapter members gain access to specialist NFPA membership

Electrical inspectors in Colorado who join the chapter may qualify for membership in the NFPA Electrical Inspection Section.

This membership includes participation in the code development process, training on changes to the NEC, access to inspection-focused products and services, and opportunities to attend related events.

The NFPA said this initiative is part of a wider effort to engage inspection professionals more closely with the code development and enforcement community.

Initiative follows wider NFPA focus on national support

The Association for Colorado Inspectors joins three other US groups with EIS Affiliate Chapter status: the Southwest Ohio Electrical Organization, North Carolina Electrical Inspector Association, and the Kentucky Association of Electrical Inspectors.

Tom Blevins, president of the Association for Colorado Inspectors, said: “The Colorado electrical inspection community is pleased to be working closely with NFPA to meet today’s electrical safety challenges head on, help expand our impact and position the chapter for the future.”

This expansion aligns with NFPA’s recent increase in regional staffing, including the addition of two new electrical specialist roles.

According to Chemstore, the award was presented at the British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF) Awards during the Safety & Health Excellence (SHE) Awards on 9 April 2025.

The event was held at The Vox Conference Centre in Birmingham.

The ionGuard product was selected by judges for its design, which addresses hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries used in manufacturing, warehousing and electric vehicle applications.

Battery fires identified as key workplace safety concern

The ionGuard Lithium-Ion Battery Box is designed to contain potentially dangerous batteries that may enter thermal runaway.

Chemstore stated that traditional methods involve placing damaged or suspect batteries in exclusion zones outdoors.

IonGuard provides an alternative containment option within operational workflows.

The box is designed to prevent the spread of fire and reduce exposure to toxic gases during battery failures.

Fire suppression system uses recycled glass extinguishing agent

The fire suppression system within ionGuard can be triggered manually or automatically through heat-sensitive fusible links.

Chemstore stated that the unit uses PyroBubbles, which are glass granules made from recycled material.

These granules form an oxygen barrier when exposed to high heat, smothering the fire.

The system is designed to prevent re-ignition and mitigate the effects of battery combustion.

IonGuard integration and design flexibility highlighted

IonGuard is housed in a steel-reinforced structure with Rockwool insulation and can be customised for different battery types and sizes.

Chemstore stated that the box can be integrated into existing safety procedures, especially in environments where battery handling is routine.

Government funding for Waking Watch Replacement Fund extended to 2026

Government announces additional £21.1m for alarm system installation in England

The Waking Watch Replacement Fund 2023 has been extended until March 2026, with the government allocating an additional £21.1m to support the installation of common fire alarm systems.

According to a report by Inside Housing, the original £20.6m fund, launched in May 2023, has now more than doubled in value to over £41m.

The funding is aimed at replacing temporary waking watch arrangements in residential buildings in England.

All residential buildings in England with a waking watch in place are eligible, regardless of who is paying for the current watch.

The scheme will not cover any work that began before 25 May 2023.

Alarm systems to comply with BS 5839-1 Category L5 standard

The government’s guidance recommends that installed alarm systems should generally be designed in accordance with BS 5839-1 as a Category L5 system.

The fund follows National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) guidance for buildings switching from a ‘Stay Put’ to a ‘Simultaneous Evacuation’ fire strategy.

The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities stated that waking watches are “impracticable for a long-term solution and should only be a short-term measure”.

Sector voices welcome fund extension with caution on remediation delays

Benjamin Ralph, head of building and fire safety at consultancy Hollis, commented on the announcement: “The new extended fund will help the move from the costly waking watch towards more reliable and automated detection and alarm systems.

“But these systems must not be seen as an excuse to extend the time it takes to carry out cladding remediation services. This should not be seen as a low-cost alternative to protect residents; work must still be carried out in a reasonable time frame.”

Concerns remain over cost burden and use of temporary fire safety patrols

The cost of maintaining a waking watch has placed a financial strain on many residents.

Inside Housing reported that some individuals faced bills of more than £800 a month for the service.

Research highlighted that thousands of waking watches remained in place for extended periods due to limited funding and guidance on permanent safety upgrades.

The NFCC previously described waking watches as “the least reliable” and “most resource intensive” option for fire detection and response.

Mike Talbot, CTO at SFG20, explains how AI is shaping fire safety compliance by streamlining maintenance tasks, improving accuracy and reducing reliance on manual processes 

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the way buildings are maintained, with a growing impact on fire safety and compliance. SFG20, a leader in building maintenance, is leveraging AI to improve efficiency, accuracy and regulatory adherence. While AI is often associated with automation, its role in fire safety goes beyond simple processes, helping to manage risk, streamline inspections and enhance preventative measures.  

In this interview, Mike Talbot, CTO at SFG20, explains how AI is being applied in building maintenance, its relevance to fire safety, the challenges of adoption and the future potential of AI-driven compliance solutions. 

Can you introduce SFG20 and your role at the company? 

SFG20 is the go-to standard in the UK for planned preventive maintenance. It has been around for more than 35 years and evolves with changing best practices and legislation. The standard is a way that organisations can outsource the complex tasks of keeping up to date with best practice and legislation, ensuring that their facilities are efficiently maintained and compliant with the law. We do this by providing detailed schedules on how and when to maintain building assets.  

My role focuses on technology, specifically on leveraging it to enhance compliance and safety.

We do this by combining the detailed content in our standard with a forward-looking modern software platform that uses AI tools —like those from OpenAI. Our aim is to simplify the complex job of upkeeping the standard, increasing understanding of our maintenance schedules and matching building assets to the right maintenance tasks. 

How does SFG20’s work in building maintenance relate to fire safety and compliance? 

At SFG20, we make sure that maintenance tasks critical to fire safety are not missed by maintenance professionals. Our schedules clearly outline what is required to keep fire safety systems working properly and compliant with regulations. With the help of AI, we simplify complex documentation into straightforward steps, providing overviews of what each maintenance schedule is for. Most recently, we have automated the matching of schedules to assets within a building, including those that encompass fire prevention, fire management and evacuation. This automation makes sure that all asset maintenance stays on track, without having to rely on best guess matches and subjective associations. 

What specific ways does AI enhance building maintenance and safety? 

At SFG20, AI significantly streamlines the tricky job of figuring out exactly which maintenance tasks are needed for each asset. Instead of sifting manually through lengthy lists and complicated asset registers, our AI can quickly identify what’s important, ensuring no vital safety task slips through the cracks.

We employ AI to help our customers find the correct schedules manually too, allowing them to ask questions about particular equipment and manufacturers and provide a comprehensive summary of the correct maintenance schedules.

We’re increasingly seeing AI combine with sensors and the Internet of Things (IoT) to help predict maintenance issues before they arise. AI has the potential to act as an expert remote worker, capable of taking on tasks traditionally handled by people. Thanks to recent advancements in Large Language Models, many of these tasks can now be completed quickly and efficiently. AI is particularly useful as a virtual team member, identifying and reporting issues for human review. For example, it could monitor sensor data alongside user complaints and notifications—something that would typically be too costly to have a person manage on a daily basis.  

How can AI improve fire risk assessments and compliance monitoring? 

AI helps by automatically identifying the key maintenance tasks required by law and best industry practice, ensuring these critical tasks are always scheduled and completed on time. Employing AI technology will mean we are less dependent on individual engineers, facilities managers, or surveyors guessing the right tasks to keep a building safe and compliant. 

Beyond what we do at SFG20, AI can also be used to sketch out risk assessments, by probing into key factors and combining information from many different sources to have an “expert on hand”. 

What are the biggest challenges in maintaining fire safety and how can AI help? 

The big challenge is making sure nothing important is overlooked and that records are accurate and up to date to ensure the situation on the ground is clearly understood and issues addressed. Without complete visibility, there’s a risk that critical fire safety tasks, like equipment checks or remedial actions, slip through the cracks—potentially putting occupants at risk and leaving building owners exposed to legal consequences. 

AI can help this by automatically aligning tasks to building assets, identifying gaps and making sure all legally required maintenance tasks are properly documented and tracked. It can also flag overdue actions, monitor patterns of non-compliance and provide real-time insights, helping duty holders stay in control. 

Are there concerns about AI’s accuracy and reliability in safety-critical areas? 

Of course—accuracy and reliability are always concerns, especially in critical areas like fire safety.  The best way to address this is to use AI to review, summarise, or collate information rather than create it.

AI is getting smarter, but as of now, human review is still required and we always ensure to use expert oversight to assess how AI tools perform.

AI is accelerating tasks at a significant rate but is yet to fully automate them.  It is possible to imagine a time when this won’t be necessary, but SFG20 will always use humans to ratify and validate output, as we do for content written by anyone. 

How does SFG20 ensure that its AI solutions are built on accurate and relevant data? 

We don’t train AI models ourselves. Instead, we provide them with information and design prompts, along with frameworks and functions, to make them effective. By combining the broad knowledge of Large Language Models (LLMs) with their ability to execute tasks, we build agentic systems that solve the problems faced by us and our customers. At the core of these systems is the SFG20 library of schedules—our unique content guides every decision and output. 

What regulatory or industry challenges exist in adopting AI for fire safety? 

Adopting AI for fire safety faces several regulatory and industry challenges. Current fire safety regulations often lack specific guidance for AI-driven systems, creating uncertainty around compliance and certification.

There are also concerns over liability and accountability if AI fails to detect or respond to fire hazards. Industry-wide standards for testing and validating AI fire safety technologies are still emerging, slowing widespread adoption. Additionally, integrating AI into existing infrastructure can be complex, requiring alignment with traditional safety protocols.

Finally, data privacy and security are key considerations, particularly when AI systems process sensitive building or occupancy information to enhance risk detection. 

Do you see AI playing a role in predicting fire risks before they occur? 

Absolutely. AI is great at spotting patterns and anomalies in maintenance data or sensor information that humans might miss—such as noticing that smoke detectors are triggering false alarms more frequently or identifying a pattern of overheating in electrical systems.

Catching these issues early means we can often predict and address potential fire risks well before they become serious, significantly boosting safety.

Over time, as AI analyses more data across multiple buildings, it can even start to identify wider trends and risk factors, helping inform smarter maintenance strategies, prioritise high-risk areas and support more proactive decision-making to prevent fires before they start.

UK businesses prioritise security systems over fire safety measures, study finds

Most UK businesses choose security over fire protection

New research published by Spy Alarms has found that most businesses in the United Kingdom prioritise investment in security systems over fire safety measures.

According to the company, 59% of businesses reported spending on CCTV, intruder alerts and access control.

In contrast, only 39% reported investing in fire safety systems.

Spy Alarms stated that the average cost of a fire to a business is £78,000.

This figure does not include potential health impacts, emotional consequences or legal implications.

Financial concerns and lack of awareness drive low fire safety uptake

Spy Alarms reported three primary reasons for the gap in investment between security and fire safety: financial constraints, lack of awareness and limited internal processes.

The company said that many businesses deprioritise fire safety due to cost, despite the risk of severe consequences.

It also noted that new business owners may not be aware of legal responsibilities regarding fire protection.

A further issue is that some companies do not have processes in place for ongoing fire safety maintenance and training, making it difficult to implement or sustain protective systems.

Industrial, food and retail sectors face highest risk

Data shared by Spy Alarms and attributed to UK government sources outlined which business types are more likely to experience fires.

Industrial businesses were found to be most at risk, accounting for 24% of fire incidents.

Food and drink premises represented 19%, followed by retail at 17%.

Hotels and hospitals were recorded at 8% and 7% respectively.

Fire system specialist calls for better planning and perspective

Andrew Fowler, Fire System Specialist at Spy Alarms, said it is essential for businesses to have robust and properly maintained fire systems in place.

Fowler said: “As we’ve all become aware of in recent years, a well-thought-out fire plan, including sufficient and maintained systems, extinguishers and an evacuation plan supported by training, are absolute non-negotiables.”

He added: “While costs may be a concern, we offer site visits to determine the most suitable systems for our customers, from a set-up and budget perspective.

“It’s crucial to put expenses for these systems into perspective by comparing them to other operational costs and considering the potential losses and consequences of a fire incident.”

LifeSafe launches multi-purpose extinguisher in UK with Trinity Fire & Security

Multi-purpose fluid extinguisher made available to UK market

LifeSafe has reported that its new 6-litre Multi-Purpose Fluid (MPF) extinguisher has been launched in the United Kingdom through Trinity Fire & Security.

The extinguisher has received full BSI Kitemark and CE certifications. It has also been approved for Class A, B and F fires.

Additionally, it meets the NTA 8133 standard, which tests performance against lithium-ion battery fires.

This launch follows a partnership agreement between LifeSafe and Trinity Fire & Security that began in May 2024.

Entry into global cylinder extinguisher market

LifeSafe stated that the release of the new product marks its move into the traditional fire extinguisher cylinder market.

The company has noted that this global market is estimated to be worth $9 billion annually.

Dominic Berger, Chairman of LifeSafe, said: “Our launch with Trinity Fire & Security, a hugely prestigious and respected industry leader, marks a significant milestone for LifeSafe and will provide access to a global market valued at $9 billion annually.”

Certification includes lithium-ion fire testing

The MPF extinguisher is certified to NTA 8133, which is a recognised standard for extinguishing lithium-ion battery fires.

This certification is becoming more relevant due to the increasing number of incidents involving battery-related fires.

According to LifeSafe, the new extinguisher provides coverage for multiple fire types and is designed to meet a wide range of safety needs.

Trinity Fire & Security to distribute new product

Trinity Fire & Security, established in 1997, will distribute the extinguisher through its network of ten regional offices across the UK.

The company serves more than 2,000 customers including the Ministry of Defence, NHS, and Heathrow Airport.

Richard Castle-Smith, Head of Fire Suppression at Trinity Fire & Security, said: “In the development of the MPF Fire Extinguisher alongside LifeSafe Technologies, we conducted many tests, some of which were filmed.

“They make compelling viewing, demonstrating the ease and speed with which fires are controlled and extinguished – even with a small amount of the multi purpose fluid.”

Trinity Fire & Security is part of Premier Technical Services Group (PTSG), which supports over 20,000 customers and manages more than 200,000 properties in the UK.

Framework covers supply and maintenance of passive fire protection

Trail Group has been awarded a place on The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea’s new fire safety framework.

According to Trail Group, the contract relates to fire safety across the borough’s social housing portfolio, including multiple occupancy buildings and individual homes.

Trail Group has secured a position in Lot 1 of the framework, which includes the supply, installation, repair and maintenance of fire stopping, fire compartmentation, fire doors and fire safety signage.

The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea operates more than 7,000 social housing properties.

The new framework will run for four years, with the option to extend for up to an additional two years.

Contractor selection assessed on delivery, safety and resident engagement

The framework is designed to ensure consistent compliance with fire safety legislation across the borough’s housing portfolio.

Trail Group said the appointment follows a competitive selection process in which contractor bids were assessed on the quality of delivery, approach to health and safety, commitment to social value and resident engagement.

Key performance indicators have been built into the framework to allow for audit and review of contractor performance throughout the agreement period.

Trail Group was appointed to Lot 1, covering passive fire safety measures.

The framework runs for four years with an option to extend by up to two more years.

Key assessment criteria included quality of delivery, health and safety, social value and resident engagement.

The Council owns more than 7,000 social housing properties.

Trail Group provides both passive and active fire protection, as well as other housing maintenance services.

The company is also part of other frameworks including South East Consortium, Pretium, CHIC, NHMF, Fusion21, Riverside Group, Guinness Partnership and Notting Hill Genesis.

Trail Group said the appointment reflects the Council’s investment in housing asset safety and its own ongoing work in the public sector.

According to Smith, improper disposal of vapes remains a widespread issue in the UK: “With 13.5 million vapes purchased weekly in the UK, 71% of vapes are still being improperly discarded.”

Vapes and other battery-powered items have been linked to over 1,200 fires in the waste industry in the past year, he said.

Smith advised returning vapes to retailers, where disposal is mandatory, and taking electronic items containing batteries—such as phones, laptops, and toothbrushes—to recycling centres or designated collection points.

Paints, chemicals and oils add to combustion hazards

Several everyday products can create fire risks when mixed or compacted in refuse.

Oil-based paints, for example, can release flammable fumes that ignite under pressure.

Smith recommended disposing of leftover paint at hazardous waste facilities or during community collection events.

Household chemicals such as bleach and ammonia can react with other waste materials, while aerosol cans and products labelled flammable or combustible should not be thrown out without following safety procedures.

Smith said: “By following simple steps like detaching the lid and avoiding piercing or flattening the cans, we can make recycling safer and more effective.”

Cylinders, ashes and fireworks require special handling

As seasonal items like gas cylinders and fireworks become more common, so too do associated fire hazards.

Smith noted that camping stove canisters and grill gas tanks should be returned to suppliers or hazardous waste centres.

Used fireworks and ‘duds’ should be soaked in water, drained safely, wrapped in plastic, and then placed in general waste bins.

Ashes and coals, which may still retain heat after a day or more, also pose a risk.

Smith advised making sure they are fully extinguished before disposal.

Cooking oil should be cooled, sealed in a leak-proof container, and recycled through appropriate local channels.
