The Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) has received Gold Status Signatory recognition from the Conflict Avoidance Coalition and made the Conflict Avoidance Pledge a condition of ASFP membership.

The ASFP said the recognition reflects its work to promote collaborative working and reduce contractual disputes across the passive fire protection sector.

The pledge commits signatories to collaboration, tackling issues early and using cost-effective mechanisms to prevent disputes escalating.

Gold Status recognition and conference sponsorship

As of this month, the Conflict Avoidance Pledge is a condition of ASFP membership.

Mike Ward, ASFP Managing Director, said: “The award of Gold Status by the Conflict Avoidance Coalition recognises the importance ASFP places on collaborative working and early engagement to prevent disputes before they arise.

What the Conflict Avoidance Pledge is

The ASFP described the Conflict Avoidance Pledge as an early intervention process in construction and engineering projects intended to resolve emerging issues between the parties involved without using dispute resolution processes such as adjudication.

The Conflict Avoidance Coalition Steering Group comprises over fifty organisations.

It is involved in driving the process forward and encouraging procuring authorities to include a provision for CAP in contracts.

The Steering Group’s work spans sectors including transportation, rail, nuclear, water and utilities, power, civils, health, education, defence and commercial projects.

FSi Promat launches Paraflam Ultra slab edge fire stop for curtain wall facades

Fire stop system launched for curtain wall slab edges

Passive fire protection specialist FSi Promat has launched Paraflam Ultra, a dry-fit slab edge fire stop system for buildings with a curtain walling facade.

The company said Paraflam Ultra is designed to protect the building envelope by preventing the spread of fire around the slab edge for a set period of time in curtain wall facades.

Paraflam Ultra is described as an A1-rated, non-combustible, flexible system.

It is designed to support compartmentation systems by containing the spread of fire from one floor to another.

Testing, movement accommodation and installation details

Paraflam Ultra provides up to 2 hours of fire protection for horizontal slab edges in curtain walling systems.

It is tested to the European standard for curtain walling systems EN1364-4.

Testing also included movement accommodation, with Paraflam Ultra providing up to 6% compression and expansion to maintain the seal between the slab and facade where movement occurs in tall buildings.

As a dry-fit design, the system is compression fitted at the slab edge to reinstate compartmentation and limit fire spread, with the aim of allowing occupants time to escape and fire fighters time to respond.

Range position and specification support

Promat targets drying process carbon footprint with steam reuse system

Promat reduces energy in passive fire protection board drying

Passive fire protection specialist Promat has cut energy use in its drying process by up to 66 per cent with a new technology installation.

The change forms part of the company’s ClearChange sustainability program and supports accelerated decarbonisation targets.

Promat identified the drying stage on a major production line as the most energy-intensive part of manufacturing fire protection boards, accounting for around 60% of the carbon footprint at that stage.

The company installed the new drying system at its Tisselt factory in Belgium. Working with cleantech partner CEE, Promat implemented technology that reuses super-heated steam to dry the boards. Heat is recovered and reused throughout the process via an industrial heat pump.

Duncan Gardiner, sustainability and communications manager at Promat, said: “The new line uses energy far more efficiently, with heat recovered and reused throughout the process via an industrial heat pump.

“Thanks to this steam dryer technology we have seen a decrease in energy consumption during the production of our boards, which is a considerable contribution towards our decarbonisation targets.”

Further steps in manufacturing decarbonisation

Promat is part of ETEX, which has committed to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The company continues to invest in lower-energy technology at the Tisselt plant, including solar panels and electrification of some production processes.

All boards produced at Tisselt carry Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) to provide third-party verified sustainability data for customers.

Promat designs new products with higher circular content and lower water and energy consumption.

The new drying process contributes to lower embodied carbon in Promat fire protection solutions.

Intersec 2026 bets on competence in fire protection

Intersec 2026 fire protection changes explained

Intersec 2026 has announced new show features for its 12 to 14 January 2026 return to Dubai World Trade Centre in Dubai, UAE.

The organisers said the 27th edition of Intersec will be held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mansoor Bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

They said the new elements include Passive Fire Day, the Control Room Innovation Theatre and the co-located FCIA–NFCA PFPCON ’26 Dubai.

The organisers also announced invitation-only Executive Roundtables and an Innovation Trail for exhibitor showcases.

Intersec 2026 will be supported strategically by the General Command of Dubai Civil Defense (DCD) and the Security Industry Regulatory Agency (SIRA).

The organisers said the event will host over 1,200 exhibitors from more than 60 countries across five sectors: Homeland Security & Policing, Cybersecurity, Commercial & Perimeter Security, Fire & Rescue and Health & Safety.

They added that over 50,000 visitors are expected across 65,000 gross square metres of exhibition space, which they described as the largest edition in the show’s 27-year history.

Passive Fire Day set for 14 January

The organisers said Passive Fire Day will take place on 14 January in collaboration with the Association for Passive Fire Protection (ASFP).

They described the programme as aiming to position passive fire as a professional discipline within the built environment.

The organisers defined passive fire protection as built-in measures intended to contain fire and smoke, protect escape routes and maintain structural integrity.

They said examples include fire-resistant walls and floors, fire doors, fire stopping and cavity barriers.

They added that passive fire protection differs from active systems such as alarms or sprinkler systems because it does not rely on activation or human intervention.

The organisers said senior ASFP representatives and industry collaborators will lead presentations and panel discussions on early engagement in design, regulatory alignment, fire door specification and installation and competence across the passive fire supply chain.

The organisers said the FCIA–NFCA PFPCON ’26 Dubai will run from 12 to 14 January 2026 as a co-located event with Intersec 2026.

They said it is presented by the Firestop Contractors International Association (FCIA) and the National Fireproofing Contractors Association (NFCA).

The organisers said the event will bring together experts, innovators and practitioners to advance standards, competency and collaboration across the passive fire sector.

Control room theatre focuses on performance

The organisers said the Control Room Innovation Theatre will be delivered in partnership with the International Critical Control Rooms Alliance.

They described the theatre as a thought-leadership platform focused on control rooms and operations centres.

They said the agenda will include how cognitive control rooms are emerging, with AI and advanced data analytics used to support faster decision-making in high-pressure situations.

They added that sessions will examine integrated command centre operations and approaches to reduce organisational and sector silos during complex incidents.

The organisers said the programme will also address the role of operator wellbeing in control room performance and workforce empowerment.

Executive roundtables and Innovation Trail added

The organisers said Intersec 2026 will introduce invitation-only Executive Roundtables bringing together senior leaders from government, industry and technology.

They said the sessions will be compiled into post-event white papers intended to translate discussion into strategies, standards and future-facing innovation.

They listed roundtable topics as Redefining Crisis Management for Critical Infrastructure Protection, delivered by PwC Middle East, plus Governing the Blue: Intelligence-led Security for Gulf Maritime Boundaries and Defending the Digital Backbone: Securing National Infrastructure in the Era of AI and Hybrid Threats, both led by Kearney.

The organisers also announced the Innovation Trail as an interactive feature highlighting exhibitors presenting products and solutions across security, safety and fire protection.

Rethinking joint systems: Siderise breaks down fire performance at the slab edge

Siderise explains the performance differences between one-part and two-part perimeter joint systems to help project teams assess the most robust option for curtain wall applications

Robust compartmentation, supported by an appropriate perimeter fire seal solution, is essential to the passive fire protection of glazed façade systems – and is legally mandated in many regions worldwide.

To prevent vertical fire spread, firestops installed at the slab edge extend the fire resistance of the compartment floor to the rear of the façade.

These solutions typically fall into two main types: one-part dry fit systems and two-part pack-and spray systems.

Two-part pack-and-spray systems

Traditional approaches to firestopping at the facade / floor slab interface require the installation to be carried out in two separate stages.

The first step involves manually compressing generic mineral wool safing insulation material (typically 25 and 33 % compression) before installing it within the movement gap at the perimeter construction joint.

The second step involves applying a wet compound such as mastic, spray ablative or fire-rated silicone over the top of the insulation to create a smoke- and weather-resistant seal once cured.

One-part dry-fit systems

These systems feature factory engineered pre-compressed stone wool Lamella insulation with foil facings applied to the cut surfaces of the fibres to retain the ‘built-in pre-compression’ firmly in place and assist with uniformity of product density.

Designed and tested to provide a robust fire and hot smoke seal in the perimeter void between the facade and compartment floor, without the need for a topical wet sealant, they are installed in a single-fix with further manual compression of 20% for a tight fit and to accommodate movement.

Unlike the wet seal of two-part systems, one-part dry-fit firestops can be ordered pre-cut to suit the cavity width and can be supplied as part of a complete system package from a single manufacturer with spandrel insulation, mullion and transom fire protection, plus ancillary components.

In addition, these parts are often tested together in multiple test scenarios, and third-party certified as an advanced perimeter fire containment system for a more holistic approach to passive fire protection in the spandrel zone.

Each of these approaches results in different characteristics when it comes to fire performance and resilience, installation accuracy and efficiency, and repeatability and inspection.

1. Firestop resilience, durability and fire performance

Non-combustible mineral wool firestops must be durable enough to maintain their form and fit, even when subjected to façade and floor slab movement caused by environmental loads.

The safing insulation component of two-part firestop systems typically comprises standard mineral wool insulation with horizontally oriented fibres, which run parallel to the floor slab when installed.

While this 90° or transverse alignment offers stability, continual exposure to building / façade movement makes the material more susceptible to degradation along its length, resulting in the fibre structure breaking down.

This means that the ability of the safing material to recover from repeated compression cycles in-service is reduced.

This can lead to the firestop no longer maintaining the compression fit, increasing the risk of a gap forming between the product and the facade over time.

Should this occur, the perimeter seal could fail prematurely, resulting in loss of compartmentation.

Furthermore, to ensure that two-part wet-seal systems comply with the criteria of any third-party approvals or listings published by the sealant manufacturer, the safing insulation product should always be the same as that used which was in the certified tested system.

Using substitution products risks undermining the specified fire resistance performance.

Meanwhile, one-part firestops with a stone wool Lamella composition, such as ours, comprise vertically oriented fibres that run perpendicular to the substrate when installed.

Products with a vertical fibre orientation are highly compressible and flexible laterally (across their width), which enables them to not only overcome challenges presented by curved and inclined facades, but accommodate the dynamic movement of the curtain wall or floor slab.

Due to the unique structure of Siderise Lamella firestops they are able to maintain their ability to recover throughout their design life, as demonstrated through extensive age and movement cycling testing.

This means that the seal is continuously maintained throughout the lifetime of the building and for the required fire resistance period in the event of a fire.

When exposed to fire, the foil facing is designed to delaminate from the stone wool Lamella core, allowing the built-in pre-compression to be released.

This enables the product to expand and maintain its compression fit and integrity, even under the greater thermal stresses caused by the fire load that leads to facade and floor slab deflection.

Both system types can be tested to UL 2079 for air leakage, determined as the L-rating, to simulate smoke movement through compartmentation in buildings.

Leakage testing can assist authorities in determining the suitability of firestopping systems for the protection of floor openings and smoke barriers for the purpose of restricting the movement of smoke in accordance with the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) 101 Life Safety Code.

2. Application conditions, consistency and installation efficiency

The wet seal compound in two-part systems is sensitive to moisture and temperature dependent during application and curing.

It must be applied in dry conditions and controlled environments – which can be a challenge during hot seasons or locations with frequent rainfall– otherwise adhesion, curing, design life and product integrity may be adversely affected.

In most cases, the maximum application temperature is typically limited to 104°F (40°C) as high heat can cause rapid skinning or premature curing, making tooling difficult and reducing adhesion.

Similarly, exposure to rain, running or standing water, or high humidity can lead to washout or uneven curing.

Storage conditions for wet seal firestop compounds are just as important as application conditions because they directly affect product performance and shelf life.

Most manufacturers typically require sealants to be stored between 40 and 80°F (5 and 25 °C), which in turn requires onsite air-conditioned storage facilities in regions prone to inclement weather.

Improper storage can reduce workability if the sealant has thickened, shorten open time and curing consistency, and compromise the fire rating performance due to chemical degradation.

Since wet sealants rely on direct contact with the substrate, surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of dust, grease, oil or other contaminants.

Dust or debris creates a barrier that can weaken bonding and lead to gaps or peeling over time, while contaminated surfaces can cause voids or uneven curing.

Furthermore, the wet-film thickness must be applied consistently to achieve the required dry-film thickness as thickness variation due to human error can risk compromising the slab edge fire seal.

Wet spray firestop systems require specialist equipment such as pumps, mixers and nozzles.

Transporting and setting up heavy spray rigs on high-rise sites can be time-consuming while tight slab edge zones often lack room for bulky equipment, especially when façade works are concurrent.

In addition to having to wait for the right application conditions, the ‘curing’ and overspray clean up time also needs to be accounted for in the project schedule.

The flashing used to close off the spandrel zone from sight cannot be installed until after the installation has been approved, which means site operatives cannot immediately proceed with adjacent works, thus potentially holding up the build program.

This installer-driven and weather dependent approach can make it challenging to achieve a replicable level of quality across whole buildings of multiple stories, creating bottlenecks, especially when inspections are required before concealment.

In contrast, one-part dry-fit firestops are not weather or temperature sensitive and do not require any specialist application equipment and surface preparation of the substrate.

There are no curing times, wet or dry-film thickness complications or complex compression calculations.

Their straightforward installation approach, including a standardised compression percentage, can streamline the installation process and help reduce the risk of human error.

They also provide greater freedom for the installer in areas where access to the firestop zone is difficult after the facade is installed.

Dry-fit firestops can also be installed before the facade (including from the soffit).

3. Ease of inspection

With two-part systems, once the compound is applied, verifying the correct dry-film thickness, adhesion, and safing orientation and compression becomes difficult without destructive testing or a two-stage inspection.

Alternatively, when dry-fit, one part firestops are installed, visual inspections are sufficient.

The wrinkling of the foil makes it very easy to confirm if they have been installed correctly without disturbing the installation.

Their dry-fit application also makes it easier to judge bracket locations and distances, and tight jointing to ensure a continuation of the fire performance around the perimeter.

This can not only help to ensure a safer building but also reduce additional costs and lost time associated with remedial works.

Transparent protection

While traditional two-part firestop systems have been widely used in US construction, they often present challenges related to long-term durability, installation complexity, and inspection consistency.

In contrast, one-part firestop systems that have been engineered and tested to meet key standards such as ASTM E2307 and ASTM E2874 offer a reliable alternative.

By delivering uniform compression, accommodating façade movement, and enabling straightforward visual inspection, one-part dry-fix systems support code-compliant construction practices and help ensure consistent fire-resistance performance across every floor and project.

The company, formerly known as Compliance Group, described the deal as broadening its integrated building compliance offering across the country.

According to Complii, Capital Fire Doors is recognised for third-party accredited passive fire protection solutions and a focus on high standards of safety and compliance.

Complii said the acquisition will enhance its passive fire protection capabilities and extend its operational footprint across London and the wider UK.

The company outlined that Capital Fire Doors delivers fire door installation and repair, accredited surveys and inspections plus pre-planned fire door maintenance.

Its services also include fire stopping and compartmentation, steel and aluminium doors and screens and automatic opening doors.

Complii reported that Capital Fire Doors serves residential, educational, healthcare, hotel and leisure, commercial and industrial buildings across the UK.

The acquisition is presented as reinforcing Complii’s ability to offer a single source for passive fire protection within its wider compliance portfolio.

Leadership continuity and integration within Complii

Complii confirmed that Capital Fire Doors will continue to operate under its existing leadership team after the acquisition.

Commercial Director Michael Fisher and Operations Director Nathan Cranstoun will remain in their current positions along with the wider workforce.

Nigel Morrey to retire in December

Promat Technical Director Nigel Morrey will retire at the end of December after nearly a decade at Etex Building Performance and nearly 37 years in the passive fire protection sector.

Etex Building Performance said he has overseen product performance and development for passive fire protection specialist Promat and dry walling manufacturer Siniat during that period.

The company stated that his work has focused on aligning product development, testing and system design with changing regulatory requirements.

Promat confirmed that he was appointed Technical Director of Promat in 2002 and became Technical Director of Siniat in 2016, with Etex Building Performance incorporated in January 2017.

The manufacturer added that he will step down from his role at the end of December.

Shifting standards at Promat and Siniat

According to Etex Building Performance, Nigel Morrey has led change at both Promat and Siniat to maintain high levels of performance backed by testing in response to a changing regulatory environment.

Siniat was one of the first companies in the UK to secure Code for Construction Product Information (CCPI) verification, and introduced classification as standard on its dry wall products to evidence fire performance.

Within Promat, the company said he has driven the move from British Standards (BS) fire test standards to European (EN) standards, supporting a system based approach to passive fire protection.

He has also overseen the development of specialist fire board protection systems designed to meet changing construction demands, including increased use of structural steel.

Etex Building Performance reported that, most recently, he led the decision for the business to take design liability for systems across both the Siniat and Promat brands to reduce the burden of risk on principal designers following the Building Safety Act.

“Working within Promat the emphasis is clearly on passive fire protection, and to me it made sense that we applied those same rigorous testing regimes to Siniat dry walling.

“It is the success that we have achieved in creating a genuinely market-leading level of tested systems that has been most rewarding – in particular the move to classifying systems.

“This journey has taken us from historical BS tests to more recently being an early adopter of EN standards, EXAP testing and classification.

“It has taken many years and has seen us carry out over 120 full scale fire tests each year but has allowed us to become technical leaders in the UK.

“This level of test data not only reduces the risk taken by designers, it crucially supports the construction of buildings that are safer for those who occupy them.

“Likewise, it was a bold decision for us to take design liability but it is the right thing to do; to take the risk away from others and enshrine the design of life critical systems in demonstrated competency.

“Most of all though it has been about the people, and it has been great to be part of that team.

“We have created an environment that nurtures technical excellence and embraces learning, with a team that is passionate about their technical development.

“This is what I have loved being a part of and we have built great foundations to move forwards on.”

Industry roles and focus on competency

Etex Building Performance highlighted that Nigel Morrey’s expertise has been recognised through a series of industry roles.

He has served as both Chair and Vice Chair of the Association of Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP), and has been a member of its Council and Strategy Groups.

He has also represented ASFP on Expert Panel D, Passive Fire Protection at the Loss Prevention Council Board.

Following the Grenfell Tower tragedy, he was invited to chair the Finishes and Interiors Sector (FIS) Fire Safety Group, and served as a director of the Finishes and Interiors Sector across what the company described as important years for the industry.

The company said he has consistently promoted the importance of competency for accurate specification, use and installation of passive fire protection.

Etex Building Performance reported that 35 current members of staff have passed the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) Level 3 in Passive Fire Protection, with a further 17 currently working towards the qualification.

Awards and recognition for Nigel Morrey

Promat stated that in 2024, Nigel Morrey received the ASFP Lifetime Achievement award for his work to raise awareness of passive fire protection and his commitment to improving fire safety.

In 2025 he became a lifelong fellow of the Institution of Fire Engineers.

The company said these honours reflect his long standing involvement in shaping passive fire protection practice and guidance.

The programme that has seen 35 staff members achieve IFE Level 3 in Passive Fire Protection also affects contractors and designers who interact with Etex Building Performance, as they are more likely to work with teams holding recognised qualifications.
