OroraTech launches satellite constellation for wildfire detection & data accumulation

OroraTech has successfully launched the world’s first wildfire constellation of eight satellites, built jointly by OroraTech and Spire Global, from Rocket Lab’s Launch Complex 1 in New Zealand.

This constellation will provide real-time wildfire detection and change the way satellites will be used in fighting the growing wildfire problem.

For the first time, sensor data will be available during the crucial time in the afternoon and at night, a time when fires rage the hottest and firefighters need the most support. No other data from public thermal satellites is available during these critical periods of the day.

Prevalence of the new constellation

With its new constellation, OroraTech will bring to its global customer base two world firsts; wildfire information in real time alerting users on the ground within minutes, and wide coverage with high-resolution sensors that spot fires as small as 4m x 4m.

This provides first responders, governments, and fire organizations with unprecedented situational awareness at every stage of the fire. 

Spire Global built and integrated the satellites with OroraTech’s thermal imager and processing systems, highlighting their ongoing collaboration in the fight against wildfires.

This constellation expands the OroraTech satellite network, adding eight more satellites to the existing network of over 25+ integrated satellites.

The Rocket Lab launch mission, named “Finding Hot Wildfires Near You,” saw the Electron rocket deliver the eight satellites into a 550km orbit.

OroraTech’s satellites provide continuous global coverage, circling the Earth multiple times a day, gathering high-resolution data.

This data is uploaded into the company’s Wildfire Solution platform to display the location, size, and spread of a fire. By integrating many different satellites and data sources, OroraTech ensures a continuous flow of new fire data to be sent directly to their userbase of over 500+ users worldwide.

Five individuals and organisations have been named recipients of the 2025 Wildfire Mitigation Awards.

The awardees were selected for their leadership in wildfire prevention efforts across Colorado, Hawai’i, Idaho and Florida.

The awards recognise community-level action, technical innovation, and collaboration in reducing wildfire risk.

Community-led and nonprofit efforts recognised in Colorado and Hawai’i

Aaron Johnson from Ridgway, Colorado, has been recognised for developing the Wildfire Ready Home certification programme.

The programme integrates data and guidance from insurance providers, local governments, and fire agencies to support homeowners in reducing wildfire risk.

Johnson also provides wildfire assessment training to homeowners’ associations and fire departments.

The Hawai’i Wildfire Management Organization (HWMO), operating across the state for 25 years, provided support after the August 2023 Lahaina fires.

In 2024, HWMO reached over 10,000 residents with workshops, assessments, campaigns, and projects.

Public sector wildfire mitigation efforts in Idaho and Florida

Tyre Holfeltz of the Idaho Department of Lands received the award for his work in helping counties update Community Wildfire Protection Plans and for developing vegetation management partnerships with utility companies.

He contributed to the development of a geospatial database and served in the national Grant Accomplishment Reporting Portal working group.

In Florida, Aleese Maples of the Chipola Forestry Center facilitated 206 mitigation projects across seven counties after Hurricane Michael.

She designed the contractor bidding and procurement process that resulted in 1,847 acres of defensible space near homes.

Volunteer-driven model in Colorado receives national recognition

The NoFloCo Fire Mitigation Posse, led by founder Don Moore in Teller County, Colorado, has been awarded for its volunteer-based approach to wildfire mitigation.

The group uses non-mechanised methods to keep costs down and reduce environmental impact.

Volunteers are recognised with symbolic awards, such as a purple hard hat for repeated participation, and community meals follow each event.

The group was nominated by one of its own volunteers.

Additional mentions and upcoming awards ceremony

The Wildfire Mitigation Awards Committee also highlighted several efforts outside the primary awardees.

These included 103 mitigation projects recorded in a virtual dashboard by Contra Costa County Fire Protection District and a community-focused “WUI Summit” held in South Carolina by the State Forestry Commission.

The 2025 Wildfire Mitigation Awards will be presented at the Wildland-Urban Interface Conference in Kansas City, Missouri, on 28 March 2025.

NFPA, NASF, IAFC and the USDA Forest Service will also host a virtual meeting between award recipients and partner organisations prior to the event.

The nomination period for the 2026 awards is expected to open in summer 2025.

LA wildfires: LADWP equipment under investigation as Project Recovery proposes rebuild strategy

Investigations ongoing into LADWP role in Palisades Fire

A power line operated by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) was active when the Palisades Fire began in January 2025, but authorities have not found evidence linking the utility’s equipment to the blaze according to new reports.

As reported by Reuters, the fire, which started on 7 January, has become one of the most destructive wildfires in recent US history.

The transmission line near the hills where the fire began has drawn attention due to a complaint filed last week alleging it contributed to subsequent spot fires.

The complaint states that the LADWP system may have sparked additional fires at around 10:30pm  on the same day, nearly 12 hours after the initial blaze.

LADWP said it had manually shut off the power line at 2:30pm, prior to the alleged spot fires.

Federal authorities have not linked LADWP to fire ignition

The US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is leading the investigation into the fire’s cause.

LADWP spokesperson Ellen Cheng said there is no indication that its facilities were responsible.

Cheng said: “Neither the ATF nor any other investigating authority has indicated that LADWP facilities were involved in the ignition of the Palisades Fire.”

She added: “The ATF examined LADWP’s overhead facilities in the area and did not ask LADWP to preserve any of them.”

LADWP is also facing legal challenges related to how it managed water supplies during firefighting efforts.

These lawsuits are ongoing.

Multiple wildfires began within hours on 7 January

The Palisades Fire was one of several fires that broke out on 7 January across Southern California.

These included the Eaton Fire, for which Southern California Edison is facing lawsuits over claims its equipment caused the blaze.

Reuters reported that the fires evolved into the largest group of wildfires in recent state history, with major damage reported in areas such as Pacific Palisades, Malibu and Altadena.

Investigations into the origin and contributing factors behind these fires are continuing.

Academics release Project Recovery to support fire-hit areas

As reported by the LA Times, a new 172-page report titled “Project Recovery” has been published to assist with rebuilding efforts in Los Angeles County following the January wildfires.

The report was produced by academics from the University of Southern California and University of California Los Angeles, along with the Urban Land Institute’s Los Angeles chapter.

It identifies issues and offers strategic solutions to speed up recovery.

Lew Horne, who chaired the project, said: “We want to make sure that we’re moving as quickly as possible to try to get people back into their homes.”

Report proposes changes to construction approvals and permitting

The authors recommend simplifying the construction permitting process through a self-certification system.

Under this approach, qualified professionals would certify building plans as compliant, allowing applications to proceed faster.

The report also advises consolidating departmental reviews under a single project permit coordinator to avoid delays caused by sequential checks from separate city departments.

Horne said the process could be reduced: “We think that you could take a one-year entitlement program and knock it down to 30 days.”

Call for standardised debris removal and soil clearance checks

Project Recovery identifies inconsistencies in how debris is being removed.

According to the report, different standards are being applied depending on whether contractors are hired privately or through the Army Corps of Engineers.

The authors recommend a uniform debris removal protocol.

They also propose linking a certificate of soil clearance to the building permit file for each site as a record that environmental standards have been met.

These measures are intended to ensure both safety and administrative transparency during rebuilding.

Proposal for on-site logistics centres in fire zones

To manage rebuilding demands, the report suggests establishing on-site logistics centres in wildfire-affected areas.

These hubs would coordinate permit processing, workforce accommodation and material delivery.

Each centre would be capable of managing up to 2,000 residences and support construction teams of up to 40,000 workers.

The centres would also include offices for inspection teams and tools for scheduling site visits.

Infrastructure and utility restoration would be coordinated through the same centres to support efficient reconstruction.

Recommendations to stabilise property insurance in fire-prone areas

The report addresses the insurance challenges faced by homeowners who lost property in the fires.

Economist Stuart Gabriel from UCLA said: “These wildfire disasters are a very thick coat of icing on an insurance crisis cake.”

Among the recommendations: insurers should consider home hardening measures and fire mitigation when setting premiums.

The report also calls for a public-private reinsurance scheme to support the availability of coverage in high-risk areas.

Additional proposals include factoring in forest management practices during underwriting and expanding funding for controlled burns and fuel reduction.

Community-led rebuilding and coordination proposed

The report suggests creating local rebuilding authorities with independent oversight but operational control.

These bodies would coordinate planning, inspections and financial support.

South Korea faces one of its most destructive wildfire events in recent history

Wind-driven wildfires have burned across southern South Korea, killing at least 18 people, destroying more than 200 structures and prompting the evacuation of 27,000 residents.

According to reports from the Guardian and Korea Times, fires that started across the country over the weekend have spread rapidly due to dry conditions and strong winds. Over 8,700 hectares of forest have been destroyed, and more than 6,500 emergency responders have been mobilised.

The Korea Forest Service said multiple blazes, including in Uiseong, Andong, Sancheong and Ulsan, were among the largest ever recorded in the region. Prime Minister Han Duck-soo urged agencies to prepare for the worst-case scenario.

Fires destroy homes and cultural heritage sites in southeastern regions

Among the areas most affected is Uiseong in North Gyeongsang Province, where approximately 65 percent of the fire had been contained by Monday, according to the Korea Forest Service. The fire destroyed Gounsa Temple, a Buddhist temple dating to the seventh century.

The Korea Heritage Service confirmed the temple’s destruction, adding that national treasures, including a stone Buddha statue, had been evacuated in advance. No injuries were reported at the site.

Thousands were forced to evacuate from Uiseong, Andong, Sancheong and Ulsan. Temporary shelters, such as schools and gyms, were opened to accommodate evacuees. Officials also closed roads and issued evacuation orders in the coastal town of Yeongdeok.

Helicopter crash halts aerial firefighting operations

A helicopter responding to the fire in Uiseong crashed, killing the pilot. As a result, the Korea Forest Service suspended all firefighting helicopter operations nationwide.

Over 130 helicopters were originally deployed, but efforts were curtailed due to wind conditions and safety concerns. Officials also reported that around 9,000 personnel had been deployed, with operations continuing on the ground where possible.

The ministry of the interior and safety said the fires were only partially under control due to worsening weather conditions.

Beyond the municipalities required to implement PAMIF, 10 towns had voluntarily developed their own fire prevention strategies with guidance from Civil Protection technicians.

South Africa faces growing wildfire crisis as Fire Protection Associations warn of government failures

A report from the South Africa‘s North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) highlights the widespread damage caused by veld fires in 2024.

The report, as noted in an article on Business Tech, states that 424,172 hectares of land were burned between 1 January and 16 December, with 189 fires recorded in November alone.

The financial impact has been estimated at R3.03 billion, accounting for both direct and indirect costs.

These fires have destroyed agricultural land, infrastructure, and vehicles, displacing communities and raising concerns over food security.

Fire Protection Associations (FPAs) in South Africa argue that the government has not provided adequate resources to prevent and manage these fires.

Under the National Veld and Forest Fire Act (NVFFA), FPAs are responsible for wildfire risk management but say they face critical shortages in funding, staff, and equipment.

FPAs criticise lack of government support

Eric Stoch, Chairman of the North West Umbrella Fire Protection Association (NWUFPA), described the situation as a national security crisis.

He said: “Leaving these essential resources to deteriorate in central storage facilities while communities face unprecedented fire risks… borders on criminal intent and demands immediate investigation.”

Stoch claims that municipal and national authorities have not provided the necessary support to FPAs, leaving fire departments understaffed and without adequate operational vehicles.

He stated that mismanagement within the disaster management sector has worsened the situation.

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) has rejected these allegations, maintaining that it operates as a regulatory authority rather than a primary fire management service.

Delayed emergency responses raise concerns

The NWUFPA has reported several instances where fire departments were unable to respond effectively to fires.

In one case, a farm worker died fighting a runaway fire in JB Marks Local Municipality.

Stoch said: “Our available resources were completely overwhelmed by the scale and number of fires.

“Despite our urgent requests for aid and assistance, our pleas were disregarded.”

He also noted cases where a fire department refused to respond to a village fire, claiming they only handled structural fires in town.

Another municipality had to rely on the FPA due to a lack of operational vehicles, while in Lichtenburg, fire trucks arrived without water.

Government defends fire response strategy

DFFE Deputy Minister Bernice Swarts dismissed the criticism, saying the department works in collaboration with landowners, FPAs, and local authorities to manage fire risks.

Swarts stated: “Any extensions to the fire season or increased local resources require collaboration between landowners, FPAs, local and provincial authorities, as DFFE’s resources are allocated equitably across the country.”

Reports indicate that a fleet of 278 fire trucks and crew buses operated by Working on Fire has been left unused in depots for up to two years.

The DFFE maintains that these vehicles have been distributed to district municipalities, but some municipal authorities claim they were unaware of any allocations.

Swarts said consultations with Provincial Disaster Management Centres and municipalities are ongoing to finalise the transfer of fire vehicles.
