From Auxquimia to Perimeter Solutions: Fifty years of safety success

Staying in business long-term is no small feat. In fact, data show that roughly 20% of new businesses in Spain fail within their first year.

This makes the success of Auxquimia, based in Mieres, Asturias, Spain, all the more impressive.

Founded as a family business by the Acuña family in 1974, Auxquimia celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, reflecting on its remarkable evolution into one of the global leaders in firefighting foam concentrates.

When the company first opened its doors, it started as an engineering firm and provided consulting services for its customers.

Later, it became one of the first companies in Spain to manufacture industrial consumer products primarily for the safety sector.

These early products brought Auxquimia into the fire safety industry.

Based on resin foams, these solutions were designed to prevent and combat fires in the mining industry, particularly in coal mines.

Expanding safety solutions for a changing industry

Building on its firefighting foam capabilities, Auxquimia expanded its fire safety portfolio by developing fire extinguisher additives, high-expansion foam concentrates, aqueous film-forming foams (like AUXQUIMIA® AQUAFILM™) and alcohol resistant-AFFF solutions, (such as AUXQUIMIA® Polyfoam.

As the company continued to grow, their portfolio of firefighting foam concentrate solutions advanced.

Responding to industry concerns surrounding polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), the company began developing fluorine-free solutions that were used to battle fires involving flammable liquids, such as petroleum and kerosene.

The industry responded positively to Auxquimia’s advanced technology and the company began a concentrated effort to expand its business to international markets.

They started exporting from Spain to other European countries, including France, Finland, Italy and the United Kingdom, as well as countries in South America and Asia.

With a strong commitment to innovation and an experienced research and development team, Auxquimia was seen as a leader in the international fire safety industry.

The proven effectiveness of its products and its large production capacity led it to becoming the sole supplier of firefighting foam concentrates to major global companies in multiple industries including the petrochemical, chemical, naval, aerospace, energy, mining and automotive segments.

A new era: Strategic acquisitions and global expansion

Around this time, the fire safety division of Israel Chemicals Limited (now Perimeter Solutions, as of 2018) sought to expand its wildfire business into other segments of the fire safety industry, including industrial fire safety.

ICL owned the PHOS-CHEK® brand of fire retardant and firefighting foams and maintained production facilities in the United States, Canada and France.

On May 2, 2014, they completed the acquisition of Auxquimia, expanding its portfolio of Class B firefighting foams.

In a statement released at the time, ICL said the purchase completed the organisation’s goal to become the main supplier for firefighters around the world.

Following the acquisition, Auxquimia continued to work to reduce the environmental impact of its products and they made a commitment to further develop firefighting foam concentrates that were free of fluorine.

In 2015, Auxquimia was exporting nearly three-quarters of its manufactured products to locations throughout Europe, Asia and America, while securing partnerships with major customers.

In 2018, SK Capital acquired ICL’s oil additives and firefighting business units, which included Auxquimia and formed Perimeter Solutions.

The newly formed independent company now specialised in fire management chemicals, oil and lubricant additives and chemicals for pesticide and mining applications.

Bolstering global production

Later that year, Perimeter Solutions made a key acquisition to expand its firefighting foam business when it bought The Solberg Company, the firefighting foam products division of Amerex Corporation.

At the time of the acquisition, Solberg maintained production facilities in the United States, Australia and Norway and Perimeter Solutions made the decision to transfer Norway’s production to Asturias, Spain, to merge that location’s firefighting foam operations with Auxquimia into a single unit.

In 2021, Auxquimia’s focus on developing more environmentally responsible solutions led to the introduction of SOLBERG® VERSAGARD™ AS-100 Multi-Purpose 3×3 Fluorine-Free Foam Concentrate, an alcohol-resistant, state-of-the-art pseudoplastic foam technology that contains no intentionally added PFAS chemicals that can be used to secure Class B (hydrocarbon fuel and polar solvent fuel) fires and deep-seated Class A fires.

This biodegradable and non-persistent fluorine-free foam concentrate became an instantly viable alternative to traditional fluorinated AR-AFFF 3×3 products that were on the market.

SOLBERG VERSAGARD AS-100 delivers excellent firefighting performance, but one of its key advantages when compared to other fluorine-free solutions on the market, is the consistent viscosity it maintains when in contact with water, dramatically improving handling and use rates in firefighting operations.

Auxquimia expanded the SOLBERG VERSAGARD line a year later with SOLBERG® VERSAGARD™ 1×3.

Ideal for industrial emergency response, its low viscosity has made it the firefighting foam of choice for organisations in the petrochemical space.

Haitham Khouri, CEO of Perimeter Solutions, joined the Auxquimia team on September 16, 2024, to celebrate the company’s 50th Anniversary.

One of the original founders of Auxquimia was in attendance and was honored with a plaque for his part in building the organisation.

Representatives from local and regional authorities, valued collaborators, employees and friends also joined to mark the milestone.

Looking back over its 50 years of innovation, Auxquimia has developed a stellar line of proprietary firefighting solutions in addition to its SOLBERG VERSAGARD products, including:

  • AUXQUIMIA® AQUAFILM™: Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) for fighting hydrocarbon fires.
  • AUXQUIMIA® AUXIFOAM: Synthetic resin for fire extinguishing.

EU addresses wildfire challenges and climate risks in new report

The impact of wildfires across Europe

The 2023 wildfire season saw some of the worst fires recorded across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa since 2000.

According to the Forest Fires 2023 report by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, wildfires affected over 500,000 hectares of natural land, equivalent to half the size of Cyprus.

The most severe incident occurred in Alexandroupolis, Greece, marking the largest wildfire ever recorded in the European Union since the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) began tracking in 2000.

The report attributes this trend to climate change, with rising temperatures causing more frequent and intense fires across expanded areas and longer fire seasons.

Climate change’s role in wildfire risks

The report highlights the connection between climate change and wildfires, noting that prolonged fire seasons and increased fire intensity pose major challenges for firefighting services.

Fires are now occurring in regions traditionally unaffected, complicating response efforts.

Commissioner for Climate Action, Wopke Hoekstra, emphasised the urgency of adaptation: “The 2023 wildfires again showed that we were not ready to face these risks.

“Building on the recent European Climate Risk Assessment, we are developing a robust European Climate Adaptation Plan to address these challenges.”

Preventing wildfires through education and nature-based strategies

Human actions account for approximately 96% of wildfires in the EU.

The report underscores the importance of prevention through education and awareness campaigns.

Rural and vulnerable communities living in high-risk areas, such as the wildland-urban interface, are central to these efforts.

Nature-based prevention strategies, including prescribed burns, grazing by herbivores, and tree species selection, have proven effective in mitigating fire risks.

Integrated landscape management also plays a key role in reducing fuel sources and spatial continuity, thereby lowering wildfire likelihood.

EU initiatives to strengthen firefighting capabilities

The EU has bolstered its capacity to combat wildfires through investments in response and prevention initiatives.

The rescEU fleet, supported by a new agreement with Canada to produce 12 amphibious firefighting planes, enhances the region’s ability to deploy resources rapidly during emergencies.

Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič, noted: “Response is only one side of the coin.

“Preparedness and adaptation are equally important, which is why the EU supports wildfire prevention projects and guidelines.”

This collaboration aims to equip UK fire and rescue services with advanced technology and specialised tools as the frequency and intensity of wildfires increase.

Vallfirest, established in 2007 by wildfire expert Javier Baena, has built a global reputation in providing firefighting machinery, tools, and protective equipment.

North Fire, founded in 2008 and based in Yorkshire, is known for its rapid intervention vehicle technology designed for wildfire mobility.

The partnership intends to provide enhanced support and resources for UK emergency services facing growing wildfire demands.

Vallfirest’s focus on cutting-edge wildfire equipment, combined with North Fire’s specialised vehicles, aims to improve the capacity and response efficiency of UK wildfire teams.

King Charles III visits CSIRO bushfire research lab in Canberra, Australia, focusing on bushfire and climate research

CSIRO hosts King Charles III at bushfire research facility

His Majesty King Charles III recently visited the National Bushfire Behaviour Research Laboratory in Canberra, hosted by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), as part of his sustainability-themed visit to Australia.

As reported by CSIRO, the King engaged with Australian scientists working on innovative bushfire research to understand wildfire behaviour and enhance protective measures for communities and fire response teams.

This visit follows King Charles’s previous tour of a CSIRO site in Canberra in 1966, when he observed research at the Division of Wildlife Research at Gungahlin as a young prince.

CSIRO Chief Executive Doug Hilton stated that the research conducted at the lab is addressing not only national but also global challenges associated with wildfires.

Dr Hilton said: “The rising threat of extraordinary landscape fires has shown that uncontrollable and devastating wildfires are becoming an expected part of our seasonal calendars. Not just in Australia, but across the globe.”

King Charles observes wildfire demonstrations and meets emergency personnel

King Charles III observed two demonstrations at CSIRO’s bushfire research lab.

The first demonstration involved the use of a ‘Pyrotron’ combustion wind tunnel, which simulates fires in a safe environment to allow scientists to study various influences on wildfire behaviour, including fuel types and wind.

Dr Matt Plucinski, CSIRO Senior Research Scientist, led the demonstration and described the Pyrotron’s role in understanding bushfire dynamics and improving suppression and prediction methods.

Dr Plucinski said: “Understanding changing weather patterns due to climate change and the likelihood and behaviour of bushfire outbreaks helps to increase resilience in Australia and overseas, especially in regions that previously haven’t been that prone to bushfires.”

Following this, King Charles met with emergency personnel, including ACT Rural Fire Service Chief Rohan Scott and members of the Tidbinbilla volunteer brigade, and observed a ‘burnover’ drill.

This drill showcased the bushfire response capabilities of ACT Rural Fire Service’s heavy tanker, which is equipped to protect firefighters during intense wildfire conditions.

CSIRO’s bushfire protection systems and international collaboration

CSIRO’s ongoing research into fire-resistant protection systems for fire trucks was presented to King Charles during his visit.

CSIRO developed a burnover protection system that includes specialised spray nozzles, heat shields, and fire-resistant components.

These systems, developed in collaboration with fire agencies such as the Victorian Country Fire Authority (CFA) and the New South Wales Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS), were first tested during the 2009 Black Saturday fires in Victoria, where they protected eight fire crews without loss of life.

The systems proved vital in subsequent fires, including the Black Summer bushfires in 2019-2020.

According to Justin Leonard, CSIRO Bushfire Adaptation Research Leader, the burnover protection systems are now widely implemented across Australia and are being shared internationally.

Mr Leonard said: “We are sharing the research, both in terms of the designs for trucks and the way we validate and test the systems through the use of a purpose-built bushfire burnover simulator situated in Mogo NSW.”

CSIRO reflects on royal connections and ongoing commitment to bushfire research

This marks the first visit by a reigning monarch to Australia since 2011.

During the visit, CSIRO highlighted previous royal connections, such as the use of CSIRO-developed Aerogard insect repellent to protect Queen Elizabeth II from flies during her 1963 visit.

The product became widely popular after journalists noted its effectiveness during her tour.

The King’s visit provided CSIRO with an opportunity to present advancements in bushfire resilience amid escalating climate challenges.

Mr Leonard added: “Protecting lives and the environment as we deal with more severe and frequent bushfires is an important process for us to get right under climate change.”

NASA selects Spire and OroraTech for wildfire detection study

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory has awarded a concept study contract to Spire Global, a provider of space-based data and analytics, to explore the development of a satellite-based wildfire early detection and monitoring system.

This new initiative, in partnership with OroraTech, a specialist in space-based thermal intelligence, aims to provide a comprehensive, cost-effective approach to monitoring wildfire-prone regions in the United States, as reported by Spire Global.

The collaboration between Spire and OroraTech will build on Spire’s capabilities in space and ground systems, while OroraTech brings expertise in thermal infrared sensing technology.

The goal is to develop a scalable orbital solution for the early detection and real-time monitoring of wildfires.

OroraTech’s existing network already delivers wildfire detection services to various entities, including public fire departments and conservation areas, across six continents.

The need for enhanced wildfire monitoring technology

The proposed satellite-based solution addresses the growing need for improved wildfire management as the frequency and severity of wildfires increase.

A recent report by the UN Environment Programme and GRID-Arendal anticipates a 30% rise in extreme wildfires by 2050.

The system under development aims to support fire managers and responders with near real-time data, which can assist in better decision-making and quicker response times.

Peter Platzer, CEO of Spire Global, emphasised the importance of this technology: “Wildfires are an escalating threat with far-reaching impacts on our environment and communities.

“Current monitoring methods fall short during peak periods of fire intensity.

Planned satellite constellation to enhance detection capabilities

OroraTech has previously operated thermal infrared sensors on satellites developed by Spire, and the partnership plans to deploy eight additional satellites, called OTC-P1, to bolster wildfire monitoring from space.

The launch, expected no earlier than 2025, will mark the establishment of the first satellite constellation dedicated specifically to wildfire detection and monitoring, according to Spire.

OroraTech’s Chief Strategy Officer and co-founder, Thomas Grübler, highlighted the importance of the new technology: “Our orbital detection capabilities are incredibly valuable for quickly finding, tracking, and predicting the spread of wildfires and will play a crucial role in mitigating their impact.

“Together with Spire, this unique technology is prepared to close the detection gap and make actionable data available for thousands of federal, state, and local fire departments and agencies.”

Expansion of wildfire detection efforts in North America

In addition to the NASA contract, Spire and OroraTech were previously selected by the Canadian Space Agency in 2023 for a project aimed at developing a dedicated satellite constellation for wildfire monitoring across Canada.

This initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to provide more comprehensive wildfire detection solutions to meet the demands of escalating wildfire risks in North America.

Spire and OroraTech awarded contract for US wildfire monitoring system: Summary

Spire Global and OroraTech have secured a contract from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory to explore the development of a satellite-based wildfire early detection and monitoring system for the United States.

The project aims to utilise Spire’s space technology expertise in tandem with OroraTech’s thermal infrared sensing to create a cost-effective, scalable solution.

Planned for initial deployment no earlier than 2025, the constellation of wildfire-detecting satellites, named OTC-P1, is expected to provide timely, actionable data to fire managers and emergency responders.

This collaboration follows a similar contract awarded by the Canadian Space Agency in 2023 to expand wildfire monitoring capabilities across Canada.

OroraTech secures €25 million funding to enhance wildfire detection technology

OroraTech secures €25 million for satellite expansion and AI development

OroraTech has successfully raised €25 million in its latest Series B funding round.

The funding was led by Korys, the European Circular Bioeconomy Fund (ECBF), and Bayern Kapital, alongside existing investors.

The funds will be used to expand OroraTech’s satellite network and enhance its predictive AI capabilities for wildfire management.

The expansion aims to support firefighters and land managers in responding more effectively to wildfires, particularly in North America and the Asia Pacific regions.

The investment will fund the launch of up to nine new satellites in 2025.

These satellites will focus on providing data during peak wildfire hours, from midday to 9 p.m., offering firefighters more frequent updates to manage fires effectively.

Expansion into key markets

OroraTech plans to increase its presence in North America and the Asia Pacific regions, with a particular focus on the United States, Canada, and Australia.

These areas are among the most severely impacted by wildfires, and OroraTech already operates in these regions.

The company aims to expand its services to further assist local fire management teams.

OroraTech’s technological advancements have gained the attention of organisations across the globe.

The company recently secured a €20 million contract with the European Space Agency to support wildfire management efforts for the Greek government.

This project underscores OroraTech’s commitment to long-term solutions for wildfire prevention and mitigation.

Hainsworth’s ECO-DRY PPE fabric offers greater breathability for wildland firefighters in the UK

ECO-DRY fabric outperforms meta-aramid in breathability tests

As reported by Hainsworth Protective Fabrics, the ECO-DRY PPE fabric has demonstrated a 17% increase in breathability compared to a 100% meta-aramid blend.

The fabric underwent Thermal Evaporative Resistance (RET) testing by an accredited independent test house.

RET testing measures moisture vapour transfer and breathability, with lower values indicating higher breathability.

ECO-DRY’s improved moisture management makes it more effective for wildland firefighting applications.

Advanced wicking properties enhance firefighter comfort and safety

Further testing at James Heal in Halifax utilised WickView equipment to assess liquid transfer through the fabric.

The ECO-DRY fabric showed excellent wicking properties, allowing sweat to move away from the skin and through the fabric.

In contrast, the meta-aramid fabric did not permit any liquid to pass through, resulting in poorer moisture management.

Effective wicking helps prevent heat exhaustion by maintaining a manageable body temperature for firefighters.

Hainsworth’s innovative PPE supports UK wildland firefighting demands

With the increase in wildfires, the need for protective clothing that withstands extreme conditions while ensuring comfort is critical.
