The “Hidden Gum” problem: Fomtec examines polymer instability risks in modern SFFF foams

Fomtec explains why “hidden gum” and partially hydrated polymers threaten reliability in modern Synthetic Fluorine Free Foams

Natural polymers – large molecules made of repeating subunits (monomers) that occur in nature – have long been used to build structure and stability in formulated products.

Proteins such as silk or wool, carbohydrates such as starch and cellulose and natural rubber are familiar examples.

Many are biodegradable and in a post-PFAS landscape they are often viewed as a more environmentally responsible route to rebuilding foam blanket performance.

Their use in firefighting foam is also well established.

Natural polymers entered mainstream foam chemistry in the 1970s with the first alcohol-resistant (AR) foams.

Standard hydrocarbon foams such as FP, AFFF and FFFP, when applied to water-miscible fuels like acetone or IPA, struggle to retain a blanket: the fuel disrupts the foam structure and rapidly collapses the bubbles.

The breakthrough was the addition of natural polymers so that, on contact with polar solvents, a polymeric phase would “drop out” and form a barrier between the foam bubbles and the water-miscible fuel.

That polymer mechanism delivered more than alcohol resistance.

It also produced slower-draining foams with stronger bubble structures and improved heat resistance – performance traits that translated into more durable blankets and better burnback security.

As a result, AR-type foams became almost universally adopted from the 1990s onward as the foam agent of choice for large-scale emergency response in high-hazard industries, including scenarios involving hydrocarbon fuel fires where blanket integrity matters most.

The stability problem

From the early 1970s into the 2010s, manufacturers experimented with polymer type and dosage.

The most common natural polymers used were polysaccharides – often simply called “gums” – including Xanthan Gum and Guar Gum.

While specific chemistries differ, the operational trade-offs have remained consistent across the industry:

• Adding polymers increases concentrate viscosity.
• Keeping polymers stable in solution or suspension across the product’s service life is difficult.

Viscosity is often framed as an engineering consideration.

If you know the rheology of a product – and its viscosity response to shear – then pumps, proportioners and pipework can be specified accordingly.

Stability is a different class of challenge.

Every foam manufacturer has encountered stability failures at some point – sometimes driven by batch variation (raw materials out of specification, incorrect dosing), sometimes by storage and climatic conditions in the field.

When stability issues arise, the symptoms are operationally serious: concentrate separation, polymer settling, dehydration effects and in extreme cases near-solidification of the product.

These are operational performance problems that directly affect pumpability, induction accuracy and discharge performance.

Post-PFAS

In fluorine-free SFFF, extinguishing and burnback security now rely primarily on blanket integrity rather than fluorosurfactant film formation, echoing the fundamentals of early protein-based foams.

For many manufacturers, returning to natural polymers has therefore been inevitable.

Natural polymers can materially improve fluorine-free performance by creating slower draining foams, strengthening bubble structure and improving heat resistance.

In general, adding more natural polymer improves fire performance – particularly around sealing against hot surfaces and delivering burnback resistance in saltwater conditions, where polymers can help retain a moist, resilient blanket at the interface.

But the familiar trade-off remains: more polymer usually means more viscosity.

And in today’s installed base, viscosity now directly affects compatibility with existing proportioning and pumping equipment originally designed around different product families.

The market response

That pressure – to achieve strong fire performance without exceeding the viscosity envelope of installed systems – has driven a trend in fluorine-free concentrate design: using partially hydrated polymers to keep “in-can” viscosity attractive while still delivering polymer benefits at the point of application.

At Fomtec, this strategy is described as “hidden gum.”

On paper, this can look like the best of both worlds: good fire test performance paired with manageable viscosity in storage.

In practice, it can embed a latent instability that appears later – after installation, after time in tanks, after exposure to humidity, temperature cycling, shear, or small amounts of water ingress.

The core issue is hydration state. A polymer that remains partially hydrated in the manufactured concentrate can continue hydrating later.

That means the concentrate’s rheology remains capable of changing over time.

In high-consequence emergency response, a product that behaves differently over time becomes a reliability hazard.

The delayed hydration failure mode

Foam systems are inseparable from water.

They connect to water supplies, they live in humid environments and they are handled in ways that can introduce small but meaningful water ingress over years of service.

If a concentrate contains partially hydrated polymers, then water exposure can trigger further hydration, swelling and thickening – sometimes sharply.

Fomtec developed a test protocol to examine viscosity response to water addition, normalising viscosity and then measuring how it changes as water content increases.

When testing three of Fomtec’s own SFFF products, the normalised result behaved as many engineers would expect: viscosity decreased as water was added.

At 15% water addition, the viscosity dropped by roughly 20%.

However, when Fomtec obtained four competitive AR-SFFF products and ran the same protocol, the behaviour was starkly different.

All four competitor products exhibited a normalised increase in viscosity of more than three times with water addition in the range of 15% to 40%.

That difference matters because in the real world, a concentrate that thickens dramatically when contaminated with water can stress or degrade multiple points of a foam delivery chain:

• Reduced pumpability and increased pressure drop
• Proportioner performance drift and induction variability
• Filter/strainer loading and blockage risk
• Nozzle and discharge pattern changes
• System unreliability under emergency demand

Existing viscosity response data provides sufficient basis to identify the hazard: large, unpredictable viscosity increases translate into less predictable flow, proportioning and discharge at the moment systems are expected to work without hesitation.

A metastability problem

The most serious concern with partially hydrated polymers is the potential for unpredictable viscosity increases.

It is that viscosity might increase unpredictably and that the concentrate may be in a metastable state: appearing stable and compliant at manufacture, then transitioning as conditions change.

Metastability in foam concentrates is a reliability problem because it masks risk during early evaluation and acceptance.

A concentrate can meet viscosity specifications at release while still carrying latent thickening capacity that emerges later in storage tanks, pipework dead-legs, or proportioners.

Once that happens, the system can fail in ways that appear mechanical – blocked strainers, inaccurate proportioning, low flow – when the root cause is chemical and structural.

This is why transparent disclosure of polymer strategy is operationally important.

If polymer strategy is explicit, operators can make informed engineering choices about equipment compatibility, storage controls, inspection intervals, or acceptance tests designed to surface instability before an incident occurs.

Fomtec’s stated position is that all polymer-based Enviro SFFFs use 100% fully hydrated natural polymers because the instability linked to variable viscosity from partial hydration is considered too large a risk.

The company also acknowledges that it has not yet established a quantified statistical relationship with blocked pumps or discharge impairment associated with this phenomenon, but argues that a measured viscosity swing exceeding 300% is itself enough to justify caution in high-hazard environments.

On that basis, it calls for manufacturers to declare whether their formulations rely on partially hydrated polymers.

The rush to “1×3”

Alongside chemistry pressures, there is a commercial one: the drive toward simpler portfolios and broader “one product covers more scenarios” positioning – often summarised as a push toward “1×3” solutions.

The concept is attractive: fewer SKUs, less complexity, easier procurement.

But if blanket integrity is now doing the work that PFAS chemistry previously helped with, then a 1×3 ambition raises an awkward formulation question:

How much natural polymer is required to achieve hydrocarbon performance – especially on hot surfaces and for burnback security – and how do you put that quantity into a concentrate without destabilising it?

If higher polymer content is required, manufacturers may use partial hydration to control viscosity.

And that is where the 1×3 rush can inadvertently amplify “hidden gum” risk.

A formulation stretched across a broader operating envelope often sits on tighter balances: more demanding performance targets, more variable water qualities, wider storage conditions and a larger installed base of equipment with differing capability.

Those conditions are exactly where metastability is most likely to surface.

In that sense, a 1×3 approach built on hidden gum may be even more metastable than a 3×3 strategy, because broader coverage can force higher polymer dependency and narrower stability margins while still needing to present a low in-can viscosity for market acceptance.

Performance without the hidden compromise

Fomtec accepts that partially hydrated polymer strategies are attractive when trying to combine performance with manageable viscosity.

The company states it spent more than three years evaluating whether to adopt the approach, but claims that technological breakthroughs within its Enviro Programme enabled a different route: the launch in January 2026 of ENVIRO 3×3 NEO, based on 100% fully hydrated polymers while targeting high performance levels against standards including EN 1568:2018, UL 162, IMO and also LASTFIRE and ICAO Level B.

The implication is significant for the wider market: if top-tier performance can be achieved using fully hydrated polymer strategies, then reliance on partial hydration becomes a clearer formulation choice, particularly in high-hazard hydrocarbon risk where long-term reliability is the primary requirement.

What should change?

The reintroduction of natural polymers into fluorine-free SFFF formulations has delivered real performance benefits.

But the method of incorporation – fully hydrated versus partially hydrated – should now be treated as a safety-critical design choice, not a minor formulation detail.

Partially hydrated polymers may deliver impressive lab and test-house performance and an attractive in-can viscosity while also introducing latent instability that expresses under the most common real-world stressor of all: water.

When water exposure can trigger delayed polymer hydration and viscosity swings of several hundred percent, the concentrate’s behaviour becomes variable after installation – introducing uncertainty into pumpability, induction accuracy and discharge performance.

Foam concentrate evaluation must go beyond controlled extinguishment tests and include long-term reliability questions: how the product stores, how it tolerates water ingress and humidity, how its rheology evolves and how consistently it proportions and discharges across the full range of realistic operating conditions.

As fluorine-free foams become the global norm, transparency around polymer hydration strategy should be viewed as an operational requirement.

In firefighting foams, performance includes long-term behaviour in operational storage and real-world system activation.

It is what happens years later, in the field, when the system is activated and everything depends on the foam flowing exactly as intended.

Search and rescue report adds three tactics

UL Research Institutes’ Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) has announced a new technical report in its Study of Fire Service Residential Home Size-up and Search & Rescue Operations project, adding three tactical considerations to previous findings.

FSRI said the report is based on new full-scale residential fire experiments examining how crews should coordinate search, suppression and ventilation.

The new material adds Tactical Considerations 10, 11 and 12 to the original nine tactical considerations from earlier reports.

The report states that, where resources are sufficient, crews arriving at a fully developed fire with extension to the exterior should consider simultaneous exterior and interior suppression operations.

It states that a well-applied exterior stream can produce rapid interior improvement and that coordination with interior suppression can improve conditions for occupants and firefighters.

The report also says compartments remote from the fire area should be locally ventilated as soon as possible, with pre-suppression isolation of the compartment before ventilation.

It adds that rooms farther from the fire are often where victims are found and that conditions in those spaces can keep deteriorating after the fire is controlled if they are left unattended.

Search and rescue experiments informed updated guidance

Keith Stakes, principal research engineer, said: “The release of this report is the result of our continued collaboration with the fire service to deliver real, actionable insights that the fire service can take back to the fireground.

“We take seriously our commitment to answering the urgent questions facing the fire service every shift, knowing that improved understanding and insights leads to safer operations and improved outcomes for victims.”

FSRI said the new tactical considerations came from 10 experiments in purpose-built, fully furnished, single-story, single-family structures designed to represent today’s residential environment.

The homes used in the experiments included four bedrooms, two bathrooms and an open kitchen and living area, as well as an HVAC system used to study smoke and heat movement.

Researchers collected measurements for gas temperatures and gas concentrations, along with gas velocities, pressure and heat fluxes in every room at multiple heights.

The structure, fuel loading and instrumentation remained consistent across burns, with tactical actions such as the timing and location of search, suppression and ventilation varied between experiments.

FSRI said the new tactical considerations will later this year be added to an updated version of the Search and Rescue Tactics in Single-Story, Single-Family Residential Structures online course on the Fire Safety Academy.

Victorian search and rescue dog teams join Motorola Solutions radio network

Search and rescue dogs join Victorian network

Two Victorian volunteer search and rescue dog organisations have been added to the Victorian Radio Network (VRN), giving them direct radio access to the state’s primary emergency services during missions in remote areas.

Motorola Solutions announced that Australian Search and Rescue K9 (ASAR-K9) and Search and Rescue Dogs Australia (SARDA) can now use APX 8000 portable two-way radios on shared channels with emergency services.

The change allows both groups to communicate directly with police and other agencies during rescue operations in isolated terrain.

Motorola Solutions said the addition is intended to improve the speed and safety of missions involving volunteer dog teams.

Suarez said: “Our dogs are trained to search through thick bushland to locate missing persons, often in highly challenging and time-critical situations.

“These new radios enable us to communicate securely with police and other emergency services, significantly improving safety for our members and our effectiveness in bringing loved ones home.”

Shared channels for remote operations

Representatives from Victorian emergency services and the company joined search and rescue dog teams at the ASAR-K9 headquarters to mark the donation of the radios.

Motorola Solutions said the equipment supports interagency communication in rugged and remote parts of the state.

Con Balaskas, managing director, Motorola Solutions Australia and New Zealand, said: “Providing these exceptional search and rescue dog teams and public safety agencies with resilient communications helps them to work safely and efficiently, coordinating their responses when it matters most.

“This collaboration has already proven its value; in one recent search, rescue dog teams located critical items belonging to a missing woman, leading police to find her safe and well at a remote location.”

Motorola Solutions said the addition of the dog teams to the VRN follows the Victorian government’s 10-year contract extension with the company to maintain and enhance emergency communications across the state.

RECOM Solutions expands passive fire team in Birmingham with new base

RECOM Solutions expands passive fire operations in Birmingham

RECOM Solutions has opened a Birmingham office for its passive fire protection division to support projects across the Midlands, the M6 corridor and the south west.

The company said the new RECOM Fire Solutions base at Fort Dunlop will support an expanding pipeline of work in those regions.

The division is led by Sarah Leadbetter.

Its management team has grown from nine to 18 people in just over a year.

Around 60 operatives are currently working on projects across the country.

The division carries out work in live environments for clients in education, healthcare, residential, defence and facilities management.

Services include compartmentation surveys and fire door condition surveys along with fire stopping remediation and fire curtain installations.

Division outlines growth plans following expansion

Leadbetter said: “Our new office underpins our ambitious plans for the division and gives us a strong Midlands presence in line with our growth.

“It will support our work across the region, along the M6 corridor and in the south west.

“Passive fire protection plays a critical role in helping organisations safeguard their people, property and operations.

“Our mission is to create safer buildings and communities by helping clients develop and implement strategies that mitigate risk.

RECOM Fire Solutions forms part of the RECOM Solutions group, which also delivers project management consultancy and main contracting construction work.

The group was founded in 2015 by Jason McKnight and Joseph Dillon, who met as construction management students at the University of Salford before later working together at Bovis Lend Lease.

RECOM has its headquarters in Salford Quays.

Trail Group wins two-year passive fire safety deal

Passive fire safety contract awarded for Home Group homes

Trail Group has been awarded a contract worth around £3m over the next two years to provide passive fire safety services for Home Group across the Southeast and Southwest of England.

Trail Group announced that the contract was awarded through the Pretium Building and Fire Safety Framework for works covering fire door installations and replacements, fire compartmentation and fire stopping.

The company was first appointed as a supply chain partner to Home Group in 2021.

It has since worked on more than 100 properties including residential apartment buildings, street properties and community wellbeing homes in Norfolk, London and the Home Counties, along with locations across the South Coast from Hampshire to Devon and Cornwall.

The first projects under the new contract are due to take place at two residential buildings in Portsmouth.

Those works will cover roof compartmentation and fire door replacements.

Passive fire safety works already completed

Trail Group said recent projects for Home Group included work at Olympic Way in High Wycombe, where fire doors, fire stopping and fire compartmentation were carried out across three apartment buildings.

In the largest building at Olympic Way, all automated smoke vents were also replaced.

At Deck Place in Colchester, all fire doors for two apartment blocks were renewed.

At Court Place in Folkestone, communal doors and entrance doors to more than 50 flats for over-55s were replaced.

Full fire compartmentation was also installed throughout the Folkestone building, including in the loft area.

COVID documentary captures firefighter response across three US fire departments

COVID documentary released by NFFF

The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) has released a new documentary, “COVID: Coast to Coast,” featuring interviews with frontline workers and first responders about the first days of the pandemic and its aftermath.

The film, available to view on YouTube, includes accounts from fire departments in New York City, Boise, Idaho and West Barnstable, Massachusetts.

The interviews were conducted in 2024.

The documentary reflects on the uncertainty and fear that marked the early stage of the pandemic.

It also looks at how rapidly changing public health guidance affected day-to-day work.

The film covers shortages of protective equipment, the spread of misinformation and the emotional strain carried into home life.

COVID experiences from the front line

The documentary was produced by Cool Water and supported by funding from the Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

NFFF CEO Victor Stagnaro said: “The pandemic tested our firefighters in ways we could never have anticipated.

“Our bravest were on the ground, every day, witnessing the devastating impact COVID-19 had on their communities.

“But through their unwavering commitment, they came out on the other side stronger than before.”

The film also addresses how fire service leaders adapted in real time without a clear roadmap.

It says the experience reinforced the need to train personnel and invest in resources during crisis conditions.

SylvanSport will present its GO. Rapid Response trailer at the FDIC International Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, from 20 to 25 April 2026, with the exhibitor hall open from 23 to 25 April.

The company said first responders, fire, emergency and rescue professionals will be able to learn how teams can deploy, haul and operate the system in mission-critical environments.

GO. Rapid Response is described as a lightweight trailer for fire and rescue operations.

It is designed to shift from a transporter to a hauler and then into a mobile command centre or field shelter.

Blackline Safety expands detection services to working dogs

Blackline Safety has deployed GPS-enabled gas monitoring devices for canine pipeline leak work in Calgary.

The company announced the first deployment to Calgary-based K9 Leak Hunters, which uses a trained canine unit for pipeline leak detection in rural oil and gas utilities.

Blackline Safety said the deployment involves German Shepherd Nala wearing a rented G6 single gas detector on her harness while handler and company CEO Jay Stephens works alongside her wearing a G7c Multi-Gas detector.

Nala’s wearable detector provides GPS-tagged gas readings intended to validate her findings in the field.

The data allows Stephens to produce a report for clients that combines the dog’s detection work with quantifiable gas readings for compliance and decision-making.

Blackline Safety also offers rentals of its connected safety devices alongside real-time monitoring support for canine security organisations, many of which it said are small businesses.

Detection data supports field reporting and lone worker protection

Blackline Safety said the devices used by K9 Leak Hunters are connected to the Blackline Live cloud-based 24-7 monitoring platform.

The devices include lone worker protection features such as emergency SOS alerts, fall detection, location monitoring and communication functions for Stephens when he is working alone with Nala.

Stephens said: “The technology is phenomenal and the dog is another layer.

“Dogs smell in parts per billion – which beats most traditional sensors – and then we confirm the findings with Blackline’s gas readings to decrease the likelihood of false indications.”

Technology within the fire safety sector is evolving rapidly and entering a decisive decade.

Once considered a niche technology, the wireless fire detection and alarm market reached $688 million in 2024 and is predicted to exceed $844 million by 2033.

The real turning point is that certified EN54-25 wireless systems can now deliver system integrity and reliability comparable to wired installations, removing the last barrier to adoption.

The NFPA research revealed  that 50% of the skilled  workforce shortages will be the main concern for  2025, and this  shortfall is expected to continue growing.

This challenge highlights the need to increase the future workforce by attracting the next generation of fire professionals who may be less interested in labour-intensive work.

Advanced wireless technology can help to reduce this barrier, making the noble profession of the fire industry more attractive to technology-oriented professionals.

Additionally, the market is struggling with competitive pressure.

Clients want faster, flexible, and less intrusive installation, and wired solutions make it difficult to meet those expectations.

Not upgrading with wireless means turning away almost half of potential clients, especially in commercial projects where wireless is becoming a viable alternative choice.

The wireless fire detection and alarm market is growing at nearly 8% annually, and installers who do not adapt risk losing access to this growth and missing out on business opportunities.

Around 46% of facility managers already choose wireless systems as their first option for upgrades or retrofits.

There is a risk of losing a competitive advantage.

More than 64% of fire installers now prefer wireless systems over wired ones for their flexibility and scalability.

Falling behind means watching the revenue flow to better-prepared companies.

The numbers speak for themselves — due to enhancements in technology, the EN54-25 wireless sector is getting stronger.

The holistic approach in maintaining fire safety has always been the main driver for fire professionals, and the choice available in both wired and wireless systems  today is impressive.

The decision is with the professionals to evaluate which technology is suitable for each project and, where appropriate, seize the growth and benefits that wireless unlocks.

Turning wireless into a competitive advantage

Demand for wireless fire detection and alarm systems is  rising  in the commercial sector, where the stakeholders’ value is reduced  by 35% compared with wired systems.

At the same time, installation companies benefit from faster installations, more capacity, and time for new revenue streams, including services like integrated smart systems, proactive maintenance contracts, or managing larger projects.

The question most frequently asked is related to the performance of the batteries.

The latest technologies  can deliver  battery capacities between 5 and 7 years, supported by continuous condition monitoring and low-battery alerts, sent to the fire control panel and/or remote management systems.
