Can you briefly describe FFE Ltd and its role in fire protection?

How does the Fireray Beam-Smoke Detection system work?

Fireray Beam Smoke detectors work by measuring the signal strength reduction of an IR signal as a result of obscuration from smoke.

The detectors are equipped with software to discern the difference between a blockage, actual smoke and dust buildup and will not produce false alarms or troubles when conditions do not call for it.

What are the differences between Projected and Reflective Beam Smoke Detectors?

Projected beam smoke detectors come in two varieties: End-to-End and Reflective.

End-to-End detectors feature separate transmitter and receiver, ideal for extremely challenging applications where there is a lot of obstruction and/or lot of reflective surfaces.

Reflective detectors house both transmitter and receiver in one unit, using a prism reflector opposite of the detector .

Their installation is simpler due to single-end wiring and alignment.

Why is Fireray a top choice for environments like airports, warehouses and historic buildings?

Fireray is ideal for large open spaces like airports and warehouses, replacing multiple spot detectors. Fireray auto-aligns and saves integrators valuable time and labor. In historic buildings, it can be discreetly placed to maintain aesthetics, especially when ceiling installations aren’t feasible. Fireray beam detectors are highly immune to false alarms. Fireray beam detectors can substitute numerous spot detectors, sprinkler heads, and even Aspirated Smoke Detection (ASD).

How does Fireray achieve cost-effectiveness and efficiency?

Fireray detectors can replace up to twenty-six spot detectors in vast areas, and in smaller spaces, the Fireray One can substitute just 6–7 spot detectors, leading to cost savings. The newer technology allows integrators to cut down more than 30-minutes of labor for each beam detector.

A study by the NFPA Research Foundation found Fireray beam detectors could replace up to thirty-nine spot detectors, offering equivalent coverage and quicker smoke detection. Moreover, Low-Level Controllers enable ground-level testing, eliminating the need for costly lifts or machinery for access. As an example, an integrator in Texas chose to use Fireray One devices over another brand and saved over $40,000.

What potential challenges might occur with Fireray beam smoke detectors, and how are they addressed?

Sunlight Interference: Fireray offers models with Light Cancellation Technology® to prevent alarms caused by direct sunlight on the lens.

Initial alignment: Fireray’s reflective beam detectors feature Auto-Alignment, enabling a single individual to achieve alignment in just 2–5 minutes.

Detector interference: Fireray One uses Dynamic Beam Phasing® technology, allowing multiple beams to overlap without causing interference between them.

Dust build-up: All Fireray detectors come with Dust Contamination Compensation® technology. This ensures consistent signal strength even with lens dust accumulation. Once a threshold is crossed, a trouble signal is generated.

Hazardous Locations (HAZLOC): Fireray offers the only beam detector suitable for Class I Division 1 Zone 1 and ATEX Category 2 hazardous areas, providing significant cost savings over traditional HAZLOC spot or flame detectors.

Teledyne FLIR collaborates with EOC Tech for early fire detection

Teledyne FLIR, a branch of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated, has recently announced its collaboration with Eye on Cloud (EOC) Tech.

EOC Tech, a video security and thermal imaging IP camera company based in Korea, plans to use the Teledyne FLIR Lepton® radiometric thermal camera module in its new series of early fire detection (EFD) IP cameras.

This initiative is part of the ‘Thermal by FLIR’ collaboration.

The introduction of EFD cameras

The new series includes the HI1612-OH and HI1612-MW models, designed for continuous monitoring of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, along with other critical infrastructure, security, and facility applications.

These cameras offer multiple resolution options.

Their key feature is the non-contact temperature measuring capability of the FLIR Lepton module, which can detect elevated heat levels before ignition.

This early detection is critical for triggering alarm systems, thereby improving safety and allowing fire personnel to respond more rapidly than traditional smoke alarms.

Collaborative efforts in thermal imaging

Mike Walters, vice president of product development at Teledyne FLIR, commented on the collaboration: “We developed the Thermal by FLIR program to support customer innovations for new and developing applications.

“EOC Tech and its work with early fire detection for EV charging stations and other built environments is a natural collaboration for the FLIR Lepton and Thermal by FLIR program.”

The Thermal by FLIR program is a cooperative product development and marketing initiative.

It aims to support original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in integrating Teledyne FLIR thermal camera modules into their products, along with providing marketing support for the resulting innovations.

Addressing the need for advanced fire detection

Livingstone Academy enhances fire safety with Hochiki’s ESP range

Livingstone Academy Bournemouth, a newly established all-through school, has recently upgraded its fire safety measures.

The Academy, known for its innovative skills development programme for students aged four to 18, has installed over 400 devices from Hochiki’s ESP range.

This installation was led by Southern Fire Alarms, a team known for their expertise in next-generation fire safety projects.

Fire safety in a unique educational setting

The Academy, catering to over 1800 students and staff, spans four stories of brand-new facilities alongside historical buildings, including a preserved magistrates and coroners court.

These courts, integral to the school’s unique educational setting, will be used for lectures and staging parliament-style debates.

Importance of safety and reliability

The installation of the fire safety system was a critical aspect of the Academy’s infrastructure, given its unique blend of modern and historical buildings.

J&B Hopkins Ltd, with over 40 years of experience in design and build contracting, was the M&E contractor for the project.

They collaborated with Southern Fire Alarms for the installation, emphasising the importance of safety and reliability in protecting the school’s occupants and preserving its educational facilities.

Naomi Fell, the contract manager at Southern Fire Alarms, shared her experience: “We’ve worked with Hochiki products for several years across multiple projects and industries.

We chose Hochiki almost every time because they know how to design and manufacture reliable and easy-to-fit devices.”

At Livingstone Academy, the team installed standard smoke detectors and multi-sensors from the ESP range.

The ACD Multi-Sensors, fully EN54 accredited, were chosen for their ability to detect heat, smoke, and CO, essential in a school environment.

These sensors were strategically placed in areas prone to false alarms, like food technology and science laboratories.

“Our fit-out team appreciated the common mounting base for all ESP devices.

In comparison to others in the market, Hochiki devices are some of the simplest to fit without compromising on quality,” added Fell.

She also commended Cathy from Hochiki for her assistance in resolving supply chain issues during an industry-wide component shortage.

The importance of appropriate certification

Joao Paulo Ajami, Managing Director and Founder of Global Fire Equipment (GFE), explains why taking a consistent approach to certification is key when specifying fire detection and alarm products

Many in the worldwide fire safety industry have noticed a worrying trend towards performance specifications naming a chosen ‘approval’ or ‘approval body’ as the sole mark of product certification or compliance.

Misunderstanding the certification process in this way can have far-reaching risks.

To understand why, we firstly need to understand the difference between a Notified Body and an approval.

A Notified Body

For EN certification, a Notified Body is authorised by the EU to assess products under the relevant EN 54 CPR regulations.

Under the Nando (New Approach Notified and Designated Organisations) Information System, notification is an act whereby a member state informs the European Commission and the other member states that a body, which fulfils the relevant requirements, has been designated to carry out conformity assessment according to a specific standard.

The Notified Body has responsibility for testing the product/s, verifying the supporting evidence that a product meets the test requirements, issuing a product certificate and undertaking ongoing testing or surveillance activities.

To achieve consistent regulatory compliance for their products, manufacturers can choose which EU Notified Body to appoint as long as it is certified to test against the relevant EN 54 standards.

An ‘approval’

An ‘approval’ is not the same thing as EN 54 product certification via an EU Notified Body.

Whereas a Notified Body’s work is regulated and verifies that products comply with a standard, approvals are normally voluntary schemes which certain Notified Bodies sometimes offer as an additional service.

Some Notified Bodies run their own product directories, listings or certification schemes, for example.

These schemes are not mandated by a regulation and may go beyond the legal EN 54 product standard requirements under their Notified Body activities.

In some regions, some of these schemes are being promoted within the system performance specification, with the suggestion that they are the only route to compliance, but that’s not the case.

The only performance route to EN 54 standard compliance is via an EU Notified Body certifying that products meet the requirements of the relevant EN 54 standards.

Instead of specifying a particular Notified Body, it is essential that the correct product and system standards are cited within the fire detection and alarm performance specification.

In some countries where the CE mark is not recognised, we have seen a rise in the number of performance specifications which state that a product must be approved by a particular ‘approval body’ – who may or may not be an EU Notified Body.

The end client may specify a particular approval as they believe it to be EN 54 compliant within that region.

As I explained above, if any type of mark or logo other than the CPR CE mark is specified, this is a risk as it goes against the ISO/IEC 17000 standards which are there to ensure that the product has been certified and tested appropriately to the relevant EN 54 standard.

If performance specifications only state that products must have an approval (rather than a CPR CE mark from a Notified Body), there is a real risk that the manufacturer might have outdated products and may not have updated their standards in line with EN 54 requirements.

By writing performance specifications that quote the European EN 54 standards, specifiers will be adhering to the CPR regulations.

This will ensure that the manufacturer and its products are certified by an EU Notified Body through the CPR to EN 54 products standards and can therefore carry the appropriate CE Mark as required.

With more widespread awareness of the need for appropriate certification, it is hoped that fire safety system specifiers will place more emphasis on the right standards and accreditations, rather than the approval body.

This would create greater competition among those accredited manufacturers who meet the specific EN 54 standards for fire safety products.

Globally, we are seeing a shift in the fire safety sector away from a product-based approach and towards a systems-based approach to specifying fire detection equipment.

There is a marked increase in the number of authorities, specifiers, installers and end users requesting latest version of EN 54-13 compliance.

We are also seeing EN 54-13 compliance being stated in the approval requirements for commercial installations in several European countries.

Moving forward, we anticipate that EN 54-13 – the whole system standard – will be specified in an increasing number of projects.

EN 54-13, which was first introduced in 2005, is a rigorous standard that proves all the components in a fire safety system are compatible and connectable, thereby working effectively as one system.

The standard was upgraded in 2017 when the previous 2015 version was withdrawn.

There are currently two versions of the standard in place with the most up to date one being EN 54-13:2017+A1:2019.

There are two different classifications of approval – component suppliers (e.g.

detector or panel suppliers) and complete systems providers.

Having been awarded EN 54-13 2017/2019 approval in March 2021, GFE is a complete systems provider and takes full responsibility for the system.

To ensure continued compliance, regular conformance testing will be undertaken internally and communicated to third party approvals.

Ongoing systems testing is much easier when the manufacturer is responsible for the full system.

At GFE, for example, we continually test all the components of our systems under extreme conditions to ensure full system compatibility.

A key benefit for installers and end customers of choosing an EN54-13:2017+A1:2019 approved supplier is that they will take full responsibility for the system, and you have one dedicated point of contact and full technical support, making it much easier to get quick and easy resolutions for any issues such as system computability and any warranty issues or component failures.

I hope that by highlighting the importance of accreditation it will encourage more companies to understand the right route to EN 54 certification of fire detection and alarm products.

EN 54 product certification is clearly a legislative minefield, so it is easy to see why some confusion exists around the difference between Notified Bodies and approvals.

Extinguishing neglect with Safety Technology International

Safety Technology International Marketing Manager Liam Hunt looks at why fire extinguisher misuse is a threat to fire safety in the UAE

Fire extinguishers are a vital piece of the Active Fire Protection puzzle; often the first line of defence they are integral to preventing costly fire damage and ultimately, loss of life.

The importance of fire extinguishers is highlighted in Chapter 4 of the UAE Fire and Life Safety Code of Practice: “Portable Fire Extinguishers are the best available first response to table the fire at its incipient stage.”

The Code of Practice adds that to ensure this first aid response, fire extinguishers shall be “kept in their designated places at all times when they are not being used” and “conspicuously located where they will be readily accessible and immediately available in the event of fire.”

However, the misuse and neglect of fire extinguishers and their accessories in Dubai’s buildings is not uncommon, rendering them inaccessible or ineffective in a real emergency.

As part of the Office of the UAE Attorney General’s ongoing campaign to increase the public’s level of awareness of the law, it was announced that fines and even jail sentences would be handed down for fire extinguisher misuse.

The office states in Article 311 of the Federal Penal code, that: “Any person who removes a fire extinguisher or changes its location or renders it unfit for use shall be punished by a jail sentence for no less than one year or a fine of not less than 50,000 AED.”

With requirements for extinguishers to be installed near doors or exits, it is all too tempting for fire extinguishers to be used as temporary doorstops.

Seeking to improve airflow, the removal of fire extinguishers to wedge open doors threatens to undermine fire safety, making the extinguisher difficult to locate in an emergency.

Safety Technology International (STI)’s Extinguisher Stopper® is a sturdy, tamperproof, standalone alarm that prevents the misuse or unwanted removal of fire extinguishers.

The compact design of the UV-stabilised polycarbonate unit means it mounts easily next to a vulnerable fire extinguisher, the alarm is easy to install and a deactivation cable is supplied for ease of servicing the protected extinguisher – a requirement of the UAE Fire and Life Safety Code of Practice.

Recent updates to the unit include universal sound symbols for global recognition and space for a choice of 21 different language labels that are provided, including Arabic.

Wireless options allowing for remote monitoring are also available using STI protocol.

Why Kentec Electronic’s Taktis Fire is taking centre stage at Intersec’s milestone anniversary trade show

Fire control system innovation

The award-winning Taktis Fire, will take centre stage, with the UL and EN variant exhibiting a new era of integration with fire safety systems being connected with building infrastructure and intelligence; and across a number of global regions and compliance regulations.

Enhanced by powerful cause and effect technology, and a system of failsafe redundancy features, Kentec’s premium panel, Taktis Fire, is suitable for the most complex of sites; configurable for up to 40,000 inputs or outputs across an entire connected network; across up to 144 zone indications; and networking up to 127 panels.

This power is further realised through its open-protocol makeup, providing installers and customers with flexibility in system design, site customisation and in the third-party devices that they use, with the added benefit of interchangeable component parts.

Building upon the global success of the market-leading Sigma XT, Kentec will also be showcasing the Sigma ZXT extinguishant release and control system.

The ZXT can be configured to release targeted extinguishant upon alarm across a single or combination of up to three conventional detection zones, limiting property damage and reducing costs in the event of fire or false alarm.

Kentec’s K-Mesh wireless detection system will also be featured, showing how its patented self-healing and configuring MESH technology delivers optimum levels of reliability in wireless applications.

Configurable from two to 2,000 devices across a communication range of up to 1,200m, and enhanced by a market-leading 10-year battery life, K-Mesh allows multiple avenues of wireless communication to be relayed between field devices, wireless translators and their associated fire control panels.

And rounding off its display, Kentec’s Elite RS analogue addressable fire control panel will also feature at Intersec.

Suitable for small and medium sites that require advanced fire sensing and evacuation options, the Elite RS control panel can be expanded to become part of a much larger system, with microprocessor-based electronics providing a flexible system with a high degree of reliability and integrity.

With its large graphical display and ergonomic button and indicator layout, and the added benefit of UL and FM approvals, the Elite RS is simple and straightforward to understand for installers, commissioning engineers and end-users alike.

The trends ahead: Advanced at Intersec 2024

IFSJ catches up with Advanced’s Middle East team to find out what the fire safety specialist has in store at Intersec 2024

In 2022, Advanced appointed Sasi Kumar as Commercial Manager for Middle East and Africa, to spearhead the company’s expansion in the Middle East, a key initiative of its comprehensive international sales strategy.

Kumar, a seasoned professional, transitioned to Advanced from FFE Ltd, a Halma group company at which he notably advanced the business’s beam and flame detector segment as the Head of Sales for the Middle East, Africa, and Asia Pacific regions.

Following Kumar’s appointment, Advanced also welcomed two Business Development Managers to its Middle East operation: Sargunan Sellamuthu, Advanced’s second appointment to the region within a year, bringing nearly a decade of experience in the fire industry; and Hossam Badwy, previously a sales lead for a global systems manufacturer now operating out of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

As we look ahead to Intersec which returns this month, IFSJ caught up with Kumar, Sellamuthu and Badwy to find out more about Advanced’s offerings at the exhibition and discuss current trends in the GCC.

We’re delighted to be exhibiting at Intersec again and demonstrating how we can meet a variety of fire safety needs across a wide range of different sites and sectors.

It is an exciting time in the Middle East region with a high level of development, including the giga projects in Saudia Arabia.

Alongside this there is also an increase in safety regulation being rolled out which is improving fire safety in the region.

We are keen to show visitors at Intersec that we can provide proven, robust, fire safety solutions that they need.

Advanced is also thrilled to be celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2024 too, we are proud to have been a trusted UK manufacturer during this time providing high quality products.

Advanced is committed to the Middle East region and is increasing its presence for the long term.

We have already expanded our sales and support teams but are looking to further build on this.

We think it is vital to have a team based in the Middle East with local knowledge, that are here to speak directly to our customers.

That is why I joined in 2022, followed by Sargunan and Hossam this year, and we are looking to expand our team still further.

Advanced also has distribution partners in UAE, Oman and South Africa and we are actively looking for partners in the rest of the GCC and beyond, as well as OEM partnerships across the world.

At Intersec 2024 Advanced will be showcasing both new and updated products and explaining the benefits of each and the problems they can solve.

We will also be demonstrating the versatility of our wireless offering at Intersec and will be showcasing our MxPro 5 open protocol approach.

As an EN Standard open protocol fire panel, the MxPro 5 offers freedom, flexibility and safety thanks to its compatibility with a range of leading detector protocols, including Apollo, making it ideal for retrofits.

One current trend in the Middle East is the growth in wireless fire alarm technology with customers recognising its benefits including its robust performance.

This growth follows a similar trend in Europe where it is estimated the wireless fire alarm sector will increase by 10% from 2023 to 2032.

With wireless technology now tried and tested in Europe, the Middle East region is opting for wireless solutions too, especially following the development of the robust, reliable mesh technology.

Wireless fire alarm systems are now taking market share from wired variants.

Plus, last April, the Dubai Civil Defense announced that wireless technology could be used for both residential and commercial projects.

Other countries in the Middle East look set to follow.

As fire safety regulation tightens across the region, wireless fire alarm systems are becoming an attractive solution to retrofit, since buildings do not have to undergo the disruption of running cables which comes with installing a wired system.

Some wireless systems, such as Advanced’s Axis EN, also have the advantage of being able to integrate with existing fire alarm systems too when an upgrade is required, offering a hybrid system.

Visitors to Intersec will be able to see for themselves the wireless Axis EN on our stand (Stand F22, Hall 4).

  UL-approved fire safety systems are gaining in popularity in the Middle East with our Axis AX fire system offering a solution that suits both large commercial sites and high-rise residential applications, as well as offering vital voice evacuation.

A growing awareness and implementation of fire-safety measures in the Middle East region is driving the popularity of UL fire safety systems.

When selecting a fire system, it is reassuring to know that it has the versatility to protect both large sites such as shopping centres, schools, universities and hospitals, as well as high-rise residential projects.

Fortunately, Advanced’s network systems are fully scalable to suit virtually any application including ‘campus’ style and high-rise style configurations.

Fortunately, the flexible Axis AX offers integrated audio for automatic (and manual) fire alarm signalling and live voice paging during emergencies.

However, with voice evacuations problems can sometimes arise if the audio doesn’t sync and people are able to hear multiple messages at once.

To solve this our Axis AX range features PerfectSync which ensures audio synchronisation across the entire network to avoid confusion by a mixed message.

This includes large networks where we are able to deliver the message from the first panel to the 200th with highly synchronised fast messaging to help people evacuate faster in case of fire.

It’s ideal for big oil and gas power plants, manufacturing, datacentres and places requiring uninterrupted fire protection.

We provide a 100% hot redundant panel so users have the assurance the fire system will continue to work should a fire panel fail as the redundant panel takes over completely.

This also allows repairs and maintenance to take place without any operational downtime.

Hochiki to exhibit Latitude and FIREscape Nepto at Intersec 2024

Hochiki, a renowned provider of life safety solutions, will be showcasing its Latitude fire detection system and the FIREscape Nepto emergency lighting system at Intersec 2024.

This premier event for emergency services, security, and safety is scheduled to take place at the Dubai World Trade Centre from January 16th to 18th, 2024.
