Streamlight‘s Director of Sales, Industrial and Fire Divisions, Aaron Freund, delves into the importance of durable and dependable lighting tools for firefighter safety

Portable lighting is an essential tool in the fire sector, providing critical visibility and safety for firefighters in the most challenging environments.

Streamlight, a leader in the field of portable lighting solutions, has consistently delivered products that meet the rigorous demands of emergency services.

Aaron Freund, the Director of Sales for the Industrial and Fire Divisions, has been instrumental in this effort.

In this interview, IFSJ Editor Iain Hoey sat down with Freund to explore the role of lighting technology in fire safety and emergency response.

What advancements in lighting technology for the fire sector have you observed over the past decade?

When I first started, we were still discussing the need for incandescent bulbs because some end users believed they cut through smoke better than LED bulbs.

The lighting industry has evolved incredibly, as we have long since demonstrated that LEDs perform just as well, if not better, in smoky atmospheres.

Battery technology has also advanced significantly.

Our lights have become more efficient, using less energy while providing brighter and more consistent illumination.

The weight of our products has decreased dramatically by using newer lightweight batteries; example, the weight of our Survivor® X light has dropped considerably by 164 grams.

We recently relaunched our E-Spot® LiteBox® with a lithium-ion battery, reducing its weight by almost 3.6 kg.

This weight reduction is crucial for firefighters, given the amount of gear they must carry.

These advancements have been incremental but substantial over my time with Streamlight.

We’ve made steady improvements.

One such improvement is the addition of battery indicators on top of Survivor® X lights.

This allows users to see a green indicator for a full battery and a red one when it’s time to change or charge batteries.

What are the critical challenges firefighters face in low-visibility environments?

I think the obvious challenge is visibility.

At its simplest, a flashlight makes a dark area brighter, but there’s more to it.

It’s also about having the right type of light and ensuring it’s focused correctly.

For instance, in a low-visibility, smoke-filled room, using a floodlight is like driving through fog with your high beams on – the light will reflect back at you, making it harder to see.

A focused light that cuts through the smoke is crucial.

Another major aspect is visibility for others.

Sometimes, you might only see as far as your arm’s length because of the dense smoke, but someone else across the room can spot your light and locate you, which is incredibly important in fire scenarios.

Marking points of entry and exit with light also helps in navigating and identifying potential hazards.

Having the right light greatly enhances safety by allowing firefighters to see and be seen in hazardous environments.

How has the trend of hands-free operation evolved, and what innovations are emerging?

Whether it’s forcible entry, pulling hose, or handling an extrication call, the need for firefighters to keep their hands available is crucial.

We are seeing a continuous increase in the demand for hands-free lighting solutions.

This includes traditional headlamps and our helmet-mounted firefighting lights.

There has been significant growth in this category, and we are dedicating more time and innovation to developing products that allow for hands-free operation.

For example, our Vantage® 180 X light can be mounted on a helmet but also removed and used as a handheld light in a 90-degree angle.

 As demands grow for hands-free lighting, it continues to be essential for us to create advancements in this area allowing for user versatility.

Why is durability and reliability, supported by standards, important for Streamlight?

Whenever you walk into a firehouse and talk about any tool they use, they often mention whether it’s “firefighter-proof” or not.

Firefighters take pride in being tough on their products and tools.

You cannot introduce a product to the fire service that isn’t durable and made of highly resilient materials.

In the design process, durability is a key focus for Streamlight.

We ensure our products can withstand being dropped or exposed to extreme conditions, such as 500 degrees for five minutes as per the NFPA 1971-8.6 (2018).

Testing to these and other standards is critical.

We drop test our products, test for IP ratings, ensure they don’t interfere with other radio waves, as well as a magnitude of other tests, making them reliable in all situations.

Our products are tested both in-house and by third-party agencies.

This includes various laboratories to ensure we meet standards set by agencies like NFPA, UL, ATEX, and INMETRO.

Our products consistently exceed these standards, which is crucial for those in the fire safety industry.

How should fire departments select lighting tools to best meet their unique needs?

We aim to be as involved as possible in this process by meeting with departments to discuss their needs.

Flashlights are a hands-on product; you need to touch and feel them.

I always joke with our customers that they have to shine the light in their eyes to understand its brightness and have that “aha” moment of realisation about how they’ll use it.

No two fire departments are the same, and each has different applications and responses based on their unique communities.

It’s important to understand this aspect, and I believe it holds true in Europe as well.

Engaging with the department, learning about their specific needs, and then making tailored recommendations is crucial.

Additionally, we have a testing and evaluation programme where we put the product in the hands of the users at a departmental level.

This allows them to touch, feel, and test the product to ensure it meets their needs and applications before making a purchase.

How can advancements in portable scene lighting improve emergency response effectiveness and safety?

The faster you can light up a scene, the quicker you can assess the situation and respond accordingly.

Scene lighting has become vital to our product line.

We now have multiple products, including the Portable Scene Light, Portable Scene Light EXT, and Portable Scene Light II.

These products are quick to deploy, battery-operated, and fully waterproof.

This combination of features is unique to us and allows for rapid illumination of an area.

We are continually advancing in this area, creating more products within the scene lighting category because it is so essential.

On the fire ground, you don’t want cords everywhere creating trip hazards.

There’s also a growing demand from fire departments for sustainable solutions.

What emerging trends and technologies do you think will shape the future of emergency response?

I believe we will continue to see flashlights becoming brighter, running longer, and weighing less while maintaining durability and functionality.

The focus will remain on creating tools that allow firefighters to do their jobs efficiently and safely.

I foresee continued innovation in scene lighting and helmet lighting for the fire service.

We are also developing more versatile lights.

For instance, we recently launched the Survivor Pivot®, which has a head that pivots up and uses the same universal battery platform as our Survivor® X.

 This means multiple lights can run off the same battery platform.

I believe the future will bring more efficient products with diverse applications, allowing users to meet their needs in various ways.

What innovations or developments can we expect from Streamlight

As previously mentioned, our newest innovation is the Survivor Pivot®, with both spot and flood beams in the same pivoting head.

The feedback from the fire service has been tremendous.

The ability to have a light attached to your gear that can rotate and direct light where you need it is incredible.

Additionally, it can be removed from your bunker gear and attached to the side of a vehicle with its powerful magnet, illuminating areas during extrication calls.

Major departments are buying the Survivor® X for all their rigs.

The ability to now add the Survivor Pivot® with its shared battery platform as an additional lighting tool has been very well received.

We are excited about this product and believe it will be very successful.

We’ve also made improvements to our legacy product, the LiteBox®, which has been in our product line for over 40 years.

Enhancing this tried-and-true technology to make it lighter, brighter, and more efficient has been a significant achievement.

The response to these improvements has been very positive.

Streamlight will continue to innovate.

Innovation drives us, and we are constantly listening to feedback from departments around the world.

Streamlight launches new colours for Wedge EDC flashlight for easier identification

New colour options for the Wedge EDC flashlight

Streamlight, Inc. has introduced new colours for its Wedge EDC slim pocket flashlight.

As reported by Streamlight, the new colours include blue, purple, and red, in addition to the existing black and coyote options.

These new options aim to help users more easily identify their flashlight or express personal style.

The Wedge EDC flashlight features a USB-C rechargeable design and offers two modes: a 300-lumen “constant on” mode and a 1,000-lumen momentary THRO (Temporarily Heightened Regulated Output) mode.

Performance features of the Wedge EDC flashlight

The Wedge delivers a 35-second burst of 1,000 lumens and 3,000 candela over a 110-metre beam distance on the THRO momentary setting.

In “constant on” mode, it provides 300 lumens, 1,200 candela, a beam distance of 69 metres, and a 3-hour run time.

The flashlight uses a 1500 mAh lithium polymer battery cell that recharges via a USB-C cord plugged into the light’s waterproof charging port.

Constructed from rugged anodized aluminium, the Wedge measures 13.87 cm in length and 2.54 cm in height, and weighs 93.55 grams.

It also includes a reversible pocket clip for concealed carry in either pocket.

The light is IPX7-rated for waterproof operation up to one meter and has been tested for impact resistance up to one meter.

ProTac HL 6 tactical light now available from Streamlight

Streamlight Inc. has launched the ProTac HL 6, the latest and brightest member of its ProTac series of tactical lights.

The new light delivers up to 5,300 lumens and features a beam reach of 566 metres.

It comes with a charge cord and two Streamlight SL-B48 Li-Ion rechargeable battery packs with an integrated USB-C charge port.

Streamlight Chief Revenue Officer Michael F. Dineen said: “The ProTac HL 6 is like a handheld flood light, allowing users to see all around them while also providing a powerful beam reach to put more light on a target at a distance.”

He added that the light is ideal for first responders, outdoor enthusiasts, and industrial technicians.

Features of the ProTac HL 6

The ProTac HL 6 uses the latest power LED technology, offering extreme brightness.

It has a multi-function, easy-access head switch that enables one-handed operation of the light’s momentary, variable intensity, or strobe modes.

On the high setting, it delivers 5,300 lumens and 80,000 candela over 566 metres.

The medium setting offers 1,500 lumens and 23,000 candela over 303 metres, while the low setting provides 450 lumens and 6,700 candela over 164 metres.

Run time varies from 12 hours and 30 minutes on low to two hours on high, with four hours in strobe mode.

The light also features TEN-TAP programming, which allows users to select from three programs: high/strobe/low (factory default), high only, or low/medium/high.

The ProTac HL 6 is powered by two 5000mAh SL-B48 protected Li-Ion USB-C rechargeable battery packs, which can be recharged up to 500 times.

Construction and durability

The ProTac HL 6 is made from 6000 series machined aircraft aluminium with an anodised finish.

It features an anti-roll face cap, a textured rubber sleeve, and a lanyard to ensure a secure grip.

The light also includes a gasket-sealed glass lens with an anti-reflective coating.

Measuring 26.6 cm in length and weighing 590g with two SL-B48 rechargeable batteries, the ProTac HL 6 is rated IPX7, making it waterproof to one metre for 30 minutes.

It is also impact resistance-tested to one metre.

Available in black, the light comes in two models: the ProTac HL 6 with a 120V USB adapter or without an adapter.

Streamlight launches safety-rated Survivor Pivot light for hazardous environments

New Survivor Pivot light features dual beams and 90-degree articulating head

Streamlight Inc. has launched the Survivor Pivot, an intrinsically safe, right-angle LED flashlight designed for industrial workers, first responders, and professionals working in hazardous environments.

The flashlight offers both spot and flood beams, a 90-degree articulating head, and an easy-to-use push-button switch for controlling lighting modes.

It is rated for use in Class 1, Division 1 environments and is available in a model that is ATEX and IECEx-certified for use in Zone 0 locations.

Versatile lighting and power options

The Survivor Pivot has a forward-facing LED spot beam for distance illumination and a flood beam angled downward for close-up work.

The beams can be used individually or simultaneously, delivering 325 lumens and optimizing navigation while eliminating blind spots.

Michael F. Dineen, Streamlight’s Chief Revenue Officer, stated: “The Survivor Pivot is a safe, powerful right-angle light for personnel who work in potentially explosive or hazardous environments.

The flashlight features a multi-fuel design, allowing users to recharge via a Li-Ion battery pack, use a Streamlight SL-B26 USB-rechargeable battery, or AA alkaline batteries.

Performance and durability

In spot mode, the Survivor Pivot produces up to 300 lumens and 34,000 candela over a 369-meter beam distance.

In flood mode, it offers up to 300 lumens, 300 candela, and a beam distance of 35 meters.

Combined, the beams provide 325 lumens and 19,000 candela over 276 meters.

The light operates on a 2.6Ahr Li-Ion battery pack that is rechargeable up to 1,000 times and fully recharges in 5 hours.

It also supports the Streamlight SL-B26 USB rechargeable battery pack or three AA alkaline batteries, ensuring users are not caught in the dark with a spent battery.

The casing, base, and battery housing are made from durable polymer, and the light features a heavy-duty, spring-loaded clip with a built-in attachment D-ring for superior retention.

The Survivor Pivot is IP67 dust-tight and waterproof, with an impact resistance of up to 2 meters.

Additional features and specifications

The Survivor Pivot offers high and low brightness levels, with run times ranging from 3.75 hours on high to 16 hours on low when using the Li-Ion or SL-B26 battery packs.

With alkaline batteries, the run times range from 4.5 hours on high to 15 hours on low.

The flashlight measures 20.14 cm in height and weighs between 448g and 488g, depending on the battery and magnet attachment.

The ProTac 2AA-X USB uses a 1600mAh lithium polymer USB-C rechargeable battery pack, which can be recharged up to 500 times.

The battery charges in approximately four hours via a USB-C port.

Additionally, the light can accept two AA alkaline batteries, providing versatility based on user preference or availability.

Performance and durability specifications

The ProTac 2AA-X USB features a multi-function, push-button tail switch for one-handed operation, allowing users to select from momentary, variable intensity, or strobe modes.

The TEN-TAP programmable switch offers three different programs: high/strobe/low, high only, or low/high.

On the High setting, the ProTac 2AA-X USB delivers 550 lumens, a beam distance of 203 metres, and a run time of 2.25 hours with the rechargeable battery.

With alkaline batteries, it offers 270 lumens, a beam distance of 141 metres, and a run time of 2.5 hours.

The light provides different run times on Low and Strobe settings, depending on the battery type used.

UL Solutions publishes new certification path for emergency exit signs

New certification path for emergency signs introduced

UL Solutions has recently published UL 924A, the Outline of Investigation for Emergency Signs with Alternative Visual Designs.

This new certification path, introduced in February 2024, aims to accommodate emergency exit signs that fall outside the current design constraints of UL 924, the Standard for Emergency Lighting and Power Equipment.

The UL 924A outline allows for various design features, such as arrows instead of chevrons, variations of the ISO 7010 “running man” symbol, and other text and symbols specific to different regions.

This initiative addresses the need for new technologies, like dynamic exit signs with sensor-driven visual variations, providing a framework for verifying product performance in supporting orderly evacuations.

Scope of UL 924A outline of investigation

The UL 924A OOI offers a certification path that aligns with the performance objectives of UL 924 while respecting local and regional jurisdictions’ authority.

It permits deviations from the prescriptive design requirements, allowing the exit sign legend to be tailored to the target jurisdiction’s language and cultural norms.

UL 924, on the other hand, maintains strict adherence to specific North American installation codes, limiting design flexibility.

This new outline ensures that exit signs meet the necessary performance criteria while accommodating cultural preferences.

Jurisdictions worldwide can adopt exit signs that fulfil the evacuation performance needs, adhering to UL 924 standards and accommodating regional variations.

Commitment to safety and performance

Despite the design flexibility introduced by UL 924A, it requires compliance with UL 924’s full range of requirements to manage risks associated with fire, electric shock injury, and performance reliability.

This approach supports a global pathway for certified products, enabling jurisdictions to benefit from established performance thresholds while accommodating dynamic designs.

The outline aims to enhance safety by ensuring that all emergency signs, irrespective of design variations, meet minimum performance criteria.

This global certification path facilitates the adoption of innovative exit sign technologies in various regions, ensuring reliable evacuation support.
