Nigel Evens, Business Director at MSA for First Responder and Milipol (Government) in Europe, Middle East and Asia, discusses the company’s commitment to the region and its plans for the future 

MSA Safety has a strong presence in the Middle East, and the recent acquisition of Bristol Uniforms has served to strengthen its position. We have also come a long way since our conception as the Mine Safety Appliances company nearly a century ago. From the Edison Electric Cap Lamp for miners to the ALTAIR Grid and G1 SCBA, MSA has been a leader in the development of innovative and industry-leading products that help protect people at work. 

Bringing game-changing innovations in safety to our customers is the lifeblood of what we do at MSA and how we help keep people safe. Our ability to leverage technology to protect workers is at the heart of our mission – a mission that has remained unchanged since our founding: that men and women may work in safety and live-in health throughout the world. 

Today, MSA employs more than 5,300 safety experts across the globe. We work to protect people and facility infrastructures in a broad range of markets, including the oil, gas and petrochemical industry, the construction industry, mining and the military, and the fire service. Our core products include self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), firefighter helmets and protective clothing, gas and flame detection systems, portable gas detection instruments and fall protection devices. 

Oil and Gas Industries 

Because of our expertise in gas detection, providing relentless protection from rig to refinery, MSA has always been well-placed to support and supply the many oil and gas companies in the Middle East, and we’re fortunate to have many long-standing customers in the region.   

We made our entry into these markets by establishing an office in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the early 1980s, and since then, our provision of safety equipment to oil and gas customers in the Gulf region has seen considerable expansion through important relationships with a number of Channel Partners situated across UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait. Through these partners we supply industry giants such as Aramco (the Saudi Arabian public petroleum and natural gas company) and ADNOC (the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company), to name a few. 

The many safety solutions supplied to these industries in the region include portable gas detection and fixed gas and flame detection, head protection and fall protection devices. In addition, our specialist firefighting PPE and safety equipment is required for industrial firefighting teams operating in refineries and petrochemical plants. 

Traditionally, these companies prefer to adhere to international standards set by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), also widely used throughout the USA, Latin America and the Asia/Pacific region.  As such our NFPA certified range of breathing apparatus, PPE and helmets are generally preferred by these industrial firefighting teams. 

These include our game-changing G1 SCBA, which offers integrated and enhanced solutions to exceed needs today as well as years into the future and includes an intuitive alarm system, user interface, telemetry radio module, head-up-display and voice amplifier, all in a compact and easy-to-operate device. Equally, our MSA Cairns range of NFPA-compliant helmets is particularly popular in these industries, providing traditional U.S. firehouse designs as well as modern styles with retractable visors, jet-style helmets, and low-profile rescue helmets. 

Civil Defence

Last year, the acquisition brought Bristol Uniforms into the MSA family of brands, which has served to strengthen our offering in the Middle East and is providing exciting opportunities to access new markets in the region. 

Bristol Uniforms, now known as MSA Bristol, is a pioneer in the development of specialist firefighter PPE and is another company with strong historical connections in the Middle East. It was here that Bristol established links with its first overseas distributors back in the 1970s, which has paved the way for a long-standing and prominent presence for the Bristol brand. Today, MSA Bristol distributors are situated across UAE, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain, and whilst some customers are in industry, the company principally supplies MSA Bristol protective clothing to the Civil Defence forces in these countries. 

National Civil Defence Forces in both Qatar and UAE, for example, wear Bristol’s popular structural firefighting range, XFlex. This features a Gore Crosstech moisture barrier, and Hainsworth’s TITAN1220 outer layer, supplied in Paris Blue to Qatar Civil Defence and Desert Tan to UAE Civil Defence. This kit is perfect for the job because it is ergonomically designed, with distinctive sports styling, enabling excellent range of movement and flexibility which helps firefighters carry out a variety of physical roles more effectively.  

Bahrain Civil Defence have specified the alternative Ergotech Action 2 structural fire coats and trousers, also with a Hainsworth Titan 1220 outer layer in Paris Blue. This style is lightweight and ergonomic, featuring special shoulder shaping, which provides greater comfort when wearing breathing apparatus, plus large underarm gussets for greater reach manoeuvrability. 

As a rule, in contrast to customers in industry, Civil Defence customers tend to prefer kit and equipment certified to standards set by the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN) rather than the NFPA. All of MSA Bristol’s structural firefighting ranges meet CEN standards, including XFlex, Ergotech Action 2 and the brand-new EOS range, which offers the ultimate in protection, flexibility and strength.   

Top-to-Toe Solutions 

With our new, even wider selection of industry-leading and game-changing safety solutions, MSA Safety is today in a unique position to be the only company offering such a comprehensive portfolio of safety solutions in the Middle East region. We can now offer both industrial and civil defence markets with full top-to-toe protection for their firefighters, with our exhaustive and unprecedented range comprising firefighter helmets, protective clothing, self-contained breathing apparatus and a suite of high-tech safety detection and communications devices meeting a range of international standards. 

We are now in a position to offer our full CEN certified range of specialist firefighting equipment to our many existing Civil Defence customers, alongside our MSA Bristol protective clothing. 

• Helmets 

Customers will have access to the iconic MSA GALLET firefighting helmet, for example, which meets the European standard EN443:2008 and continues to be a popular choice amongst fire services across Europe and beyond. The latest model is the GALLET F1XF, offering superior, unimpeded vision in all directions, and 360-degree head protection against heat and impact. Lighting and communications are integrated into the design for excellent quality radio communication. Functional and versatile, the GALLET F1XF is easily integrated with SCBA facepieces and fits well with MSA Bristol’s protective hoods and structural firefighting jackets.  

Also available is the new multifunctional helmet, the GALLET F2XR. Owing to its modular and versatile design, the GALLET F2XR suits a wide variety of working environments. It has been certified to five different helmet standards and offers innovative features to better respond to specific missions such as wildland firefighting, technical rescue operations including road traffic collisions, rescue at height, and water rescue.  

• Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus  

Building on the success of our G1 SCBA design, already popular with industrial customers in the region, we have developed the new M1 SCBA for the European market, which would also better suit the needs of Civil Defence forces in the Middle East. The M1 is a modular system that can be customised to suit the varying and evolving requirements of fire and rescue services across different nations and regions. The system is easily upgradable, so that whilst the basic system is accessible and affordable to fire services of all sizes and budgets, it is crucially able to accommodate more advanced technologies which are likely to become mainstream in the future.  

The M1 SCBA system offers state-of-the-art technological innovations such as a dedicated smart touchscreen Entry Control Board (ECB) for incident and air level monitoring. This connects automatically to the MSA HUB base station – a local monitoring system with Cloud technology which enables full telemetric monitoring of cylinder pressure, motion, service-time remaining, personal alerts, thermal alarms, GPS location and more, giving incident commanders access to crucial live data. It also features the fully integrated voice communication C1 headset, offering exceptional voice transmission and reception of incoming messages. These are all essential features to enable firefighters to communicate effectively and reliably with each other, and to enable close monitoring of each member of the team at all times.  

The M1 has been tried and tested alongside MSA Bristol’s XFlex, Erogotech Action 2 and EOS ranges, and together they provide a particularly ergonomic PPE combination, with the seams and shape of the jacket positioned to comfortably accommodate the SCBA harness. 

• Gas detectors 

Used alongside SCBA, MSA’s ALTAIR portable multi-gas detectors are another crucial tool for protecting lives, warning against dangers in the immediate atmosphere. The ALTAIR 4X is a tough and durable device which simultaneously measures up to four hazardous or combustible gases, while the ALTAIR 5X version measures up to six. Both feature InstantAlert and MotionAlert alarms to warn others of dangerous situations or if a firefighter stops moving, and a Bluetooth wireless connection provides real-time incident awareness to Incident Command. 

• LUNAR 

Finally, the high-tech situational awareness and connectedness offered by the M1 SCBA system has been taken a step further with the launch of our new hand-held LUNAR system. Small and wireless, LUNAR can be used as a stand-alone device or as part of an MSA SCBA system. It offers advanced Firefighting Assisting Search Technology (FAST) which combines distance and direction data with thermal imaging, so that separated teammates can be located quickly. Direct cellular cloud connectivity provides live stats such as air pressure and time remaining, and a unique network connects the devices of everyone on-scene, as well as Incident Command.  

All of these products and more will be available for visitors to view at Intersec, where MSA will be exhibiting in Hall 5, booth 5A10.   

The Future  

At MSA, we are already seeing the benefits of the expansion of our offering and range of products in the region, and have firm plans to further extend and consolidate our reach here, working closely with our Channel Partners and distributors to maximise new opportunities.

Younger joined the United Kingdom’s Secret Intelligence Service (SIS), also known as MI6, in 1991 and served as a diplomat and undercover operative. He was appointed Chief or ‘C’ of MI6 in 2014 and retired in 2020, making him the longest-serving chief in 50 years. Throughout his career he was posted to the Middle East in highly sensitive roles. He also acted as the Senior SIS Officer in Afghanistan – a position that marks him out as one of the world’s leading authorities on matters related to human rights in the country.

He will be sharing his unique insights as the best minds in the industry gather between the 16-18 January 2022 at Intersec’s ‘Global Security Leaders’ Summit’ – one of six conferences at the event with hard-hitting discussions featuring global leaders debating, and exchanging perspectives on challenges, strategic initiatives and cooperation to foster safety and security of all. International Fire and Safety Journal speaks exclusively with Jim Everett, President of Performance Advantage Company

The pandemic has drastically changed attitudes towards health and safety within the workplace. Globally, organisations are changing the way they work to ensure that the safety of staff is a priority, whilst also maintaining working practice.

For fire departments, this has always been at the forefront of their minds. With firefighters being exposed to potentially dangerous carcinogens on the fire ground, keeping PPE and equipment clean and stored away safely is one precaution that can be taken.

However, different departments around the world operate in different ways, so there is no one way to provide a solution to keeping equipment stored away. Therefore, it has fallen on to manufacturers of mounting and storage kits to provide reliable, flexible equipment that is fit for purpose in the modern fire department. This is where companies like PAC Tool Mounts have stepped up and offered solutions.  

International Fire and Safety Journal recently caught up with Jim Everett, President of the company to discuss their roots of the company and their role within the fire market.  

Back to its roots

Over the years, PAC have built up the knowledge and experience to become pioneers in the tool mount industry. Having been founded in the early 1900’s by Dick Young and his family, the company have built upon the foundations that have been laid. On the early days of the company, Everett comments: “Dick was truly an innovator in the building of apparatus through his approach to new and more effective truck designs, as well as being the driving force in the utilisation of new materials in the building of fire trucks when it came to truck bodies.

“He was a pioneer when it came to the development of Fiberglass truck bodies. Young Fire Equipment, which was the name of his truck building operation, had family origins in the fire truck building industry going back to 1928.”

He continues: “Mr. Young delivered his last truck in 1991. During that time after closing the truck building operation, Dick was exploring the approach of making tool and equipment mounting brackets through the use of strong and very durable composite materials. After a period of creating bracket designs while working out of his home, the Performance Advantage Company was formally introduced int o the marketplace in 1992.”

Customer focused solutions

Part of the reason the team at PAC have managed to adapt throughout the years is their ability to interact with its customer base. This has allowed the company to continue to innovate by listening to the needs of the industry. This is something that Everett believes has helped them to serve the industry.

On this, Everett reveals his role in ensuring the company are always maintaining a high level of customer service. “It is my responsibility to continue to drive product innovation, exercise responsible financial management for the corporation, and most of all, ensure that the needs of all our customers are met (and hopefully exceeded). I strongly believe that the products we have to offer are the best in the industry. Good products are not enough, however.

He concludes: “One of the core values that I continue to instill in our staff is the importance of top-level customer service and support. Technology continues to develop as one of the most important tools in business. But at the end of the day, it still comes down to our people dealing with individuals within our customer base, and the servicing of those customer’s needs. Business with PAC is still very much about building relationships with our customers. It is not enough to have customers just “like” our products. They must be able to count on us to help them answer the questions about what is the best, and most cost-effective way to realise efficient tool mounting solutions.”

Gaining that customer feedback has also played a huge role in the continued innovation within the company. Having that close relationship with their customer base has allowed PAC to remain close to the industry and deliver exactly what is needed for each department they work with.

“Everett believes that by working like this, they are able to consistently improve their services. He states: “Our customer support professionals know a lot about the fire industry and the tools used in that industry, but we still rely heavily on the feedback from our customers as to what they need in the field. The firefighting volunteers and professionals who work in the industry everyday can always identify what pieces of equipment they may have, that they may not have an adequate means to secure effectively.

“Next, we search non-stop as to what the new tool products are that are being introduced in the marketplace. Finally, we are always looking for ways to make our existing tool mounting products even better.”

Company culture

In an era where customer interaction is more important than ever, the culture within a company is vital to ensure that everyone is moving forward with the same goal in mind. The end result can often be seen by customers and can shape the future of a company and its products.

“Everett believes the culture at PAC means everyone within the company are part of the whole success of the business, and that has a positive knock-on effect when building relationships with clients: “Every employee believes that what they do is a critical element in the ongoing success of our company, and they are absolutely right. We believe in the value of creating long standing relationships with our vendors as well as our customers.

Everett concludes: “Our corporate culture is what has been the driving force in our success for the last 29 years. Our dedication to our customers is what has truly defined our overall success. When we meet with our customers (especially our long-standing customers) they mention how much they like our products, but the conversation ultimately transitions to how happy they are in the way we take care of them and their needs. That’s the real win for us!”

Protecting the fire market

With nearly 100 years’ experience serving the fire market and those who operate within it, Everett and the team of experts at PAC have built up the expertise and knowledge to continue to support the industry with innovation in in the form of storage and mounting kits for departments.

Whilst Everett does highlight that protecting the expensive equipment that department use is important, PAC also help keep trucks safe for crew. “What we focus on is creating the means by which fire departments can protect their expensive tools and equipment from damage or even potential loss. In addition, properly securing the fire industries “tools of the trade” helps in creating an overall safer environment when firemen are in and around their trucks.

“We don’t hesitate to go the extra mile with many of our products in having them tested and certified to be in compliance with NFPA impact standards, and we think this illustrates how important it is to outfit vehicles with products that are not only functional but help protect the firemen that work with that vehicle. The fire industry is one that can result in a life-or-death situation at any given call. PAC and each of our staff members look at what we do to help firefighters in the performance of their duties as a huge responsibility to securing their safety.”

Overcoming change

The fire and safety industry is constantly evolving, and new change brings with it new challenges, both for departments and for manufacturers who serve them. For this reason, it is important that manufacturers are able to maintain adaptability as innovation takes the industry forward with new firefighting equipment.

At PAC, this ability to adapt is something they have already considered. Everett explains how they have maintained standards as the industry changes: “We must be able to effectively adapt to the changes that occur in any of the industries we serve. The fire industry is a great example of changes in the tools and equipment, but the regulations and standards that help protect our firefighters is critical to take into consideration when developing new products or updating existing ones.

“Our work over the years in dealing with the U.S Military and the mandatory standards they maintain has helped in testing and compliance activities in the fire industry. We stay very much in tune with those areas of the NFPA standards that directly affect the products we make and the environment that they are used in. Again, it comes back to taking seriously the responsibility we have to the fire industry to put out the very best in products, backed up by the very best in customer service and support.”

As the industry continues to change, having manufacturers that continue to engage with departments to find out what is needed to keep up to date with the latest changes is vital. With so much innovation continuing to change the needs of departments, the way that companies like PAC work will be essential to delivering fit for purpose equipment.

The new Research Studio Standard Edition includes several updates including improvements in data recording and export. In addition, the Professional Edition includes advanced image enhancement tools, analysis capabilities, and data-plotting features along with to the ability to export data to the new FLIR Research Studio Player.

New FLIR Research Studio Player

The Research Studio Player is a free software application for sharing recorded data easily in 21 different languages and across Linux, Windows, and MacOS operating systems. With a Professional Edition License of Research Studio, the user can export .FRS files that are readable in the Research Studio Player with no limitations on file sizes. The Player has the same analysis capabilities as Research Studio Professional Edition, but it cannot connect to thermal cameras or record data.

Honeywell have announced the appointment of new leaders of its Performance Materials and Technologies (PMT) and Honeywell Building Technologies (HBT) segments, and a new Chief Operating Officer of Global High Growth Regions.

Vimal Kapur has been named President and Chief Executive Officer of PMT, based in Houston. Kapur is a 32-year veteran of Honeywell who most recently led the HBT segment and previously led the Process Solutions business within PMT.

Kapur succeeds Rajeev Gautam, who has decided to retire on Aug. 13 after a 43-year career. Following his retirement and through the end of January, Gautam will work closely on the transition with Kapur and will serve as President Emeritus, Honeywell PMT, with responsibility for ensuring smooth customer transitions and helping enable growth within Honeywell UOP, where he spent several decades in leadership positions.

Succeeding Kapur is Doug Wright, who has been named President and CEO of Honeywell Building Technologies, based in Atlanta. Both Kapur and Wright will serve as company officers and report to Chairman and CEO Darius Adamczyk. The changes are effective immediately.

In addition, Ben Driggs has been named Chief Operating Officer of Global High Growth Regions, a transition role that will lead him to become President of Global High Growth Regions on January 1, 2022. Driggs will succeed Shane Tedjarati, who has decided to retire at the end of 2021 after a 17-year career at Honeywell leading the company’s growth efforts in emerging regions. Tedjarati will remain in an advisory capacity to Honeywell over the next three years. Driggs will be based in Shanghai.

“Today’s announcement is a demonstration of both the outstanding quality of our leadership and our ability to develop capable and ready-now successors for executive-level roles,” said Darius Adamczyk, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Honeywell. “Throughout Vimal’s more than three decades with Honeywell, he has proven his outstanding leadership capabilities and deep knowledge of our end markets. Doug’s extensive experience in the controls industry has enabled him to drive better customer and market alignment in the fire and security business. Ben brings exceptional customer focus and extensive global experience to our Global High Growth Regions organization. Honeywell will continue to be well positioned for global growth under leaders such as Vimal, Doug, and Ben, not to mention the rest of our management team.”

Since 2018, Kapur has led HBT, where he guided the business through a period of significant change and instilled an intense operational and customer focus. He drove a growth mindset in HBT, focusing on new products, outcome-based offerings like Healthy Buildings, and Connected solutions.  

Today’s announcement marks Kapur’s return to PMT. Previously, Kapur led PMT’s Honeywell Process Solutions business, where he generated significant margin expansion while substantially outperforming HPS’s peer group. He led HPS through a deep oil and gas downturn in 2015, and the business emerged as an even stronger competitor with a pipeline of innovative new offerings. Kapur has held several other key leadership positions at Honeywell, including Vice President and General Manager of the Advanced Solutions line of business for HPS and Managing Director for Honeywell Automation India Limited (HAIL). Kapur graduated from Thapar Institute of Engineering in Patiala, India, as an electronics engineer with a specialization in instrumentation.

Wright joined Honeywell in July 2020 as the President of HBT’s Fire and Security business and quickly made a significant impact, driving better alignment with our customers and markets to enable breakthrough growth.

Wright previously was the President and CEO of Source Photonics, a global provider of optical communication products used in telecommunication systems and data communication networks. Prior to that, Wright spent six years at United Technologies, where he served as President of Asia for the company’s Fire and Security group, based in Shanghai, and President of the company’s $2.5 billion Automation and Controls Solutions business. Prior to United Technologies, Wright spent 15 years at Ingersoll Rand, where he served in a variety of leadership roles. Wright earned his M.B.A. in international business from the University of North Carolina and his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Virginia Tech.

Driggs most recently served as Vice President of Global Strategic Accounts, where he was responsible for all aspects of our relationships with key customers at a global level, including growth plans for new whitespace areas and aligning Honeywell better with customer strategies. Driggs has been with Honeywell for more than 16 years and brings a wealth of global experience to his new role. His prior roles include President of Connected Aerospace, President of Aerospace Americas and President of Honeywell Latin America. Driggs has a master’s degree from Oxford University and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Arizona.

Gautam has led PMT for the past five years and previously served as President of Honeywell UOP. He has held key positions spanning research and development, engineering, and marketing, and has been at the forefront of innovation within the refining, petrochemical, and gas processing industries.

Tedjarati played an essential role in establishing and aggressively growing Honeywell’s presence in China, India, and Southeast Asia; Central and Eastern Europe; the Middle East and Central Asia; Africa; and Latin America. He introduced successful long-term strategies and created an enduring framework for Honeywell’s ongoing success in a portion of the world that will account for the majority of economic growth over the coming decades.
