Advanced launches new-CPD on smoke control systems

Advanced launches a new course focused on smoke control systems and its role in protecting life and property.

According to the company, this new release expands on its Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme.

Titled Smoke Control Systems: Principles, Pitfalls and Protection

The free CPD has been developed to provide consultants, specifiers, fire engineers, installers, facilities managers and other fire safety professionals with a practical understanding of smoke control strategies, system types and compliance requirements.

The company said that the module explores the principles of smoke movement and the importance of smoke control in supporting safe evacuation, firefighting access and property protection.

Attendees will gain insight into natural and mechanical smoke ventilation systems, smoke exhaust and pressurisation methods, as well as the key components used within smoke control systems.

The CPD also examines the standards and regulations that govern smoke control design and maintenance, including Approved Document B, BS EN 12101, BS 7346-8, BS 9991 and BS 9999.

Alongside this, the course highlights common design, installation and maintenance pitfalls, helping attendees better understand best practice approaches and long-term compliance responsibilities.

Rescue Intellitech launches Solo Rescue Plus

Rescue Intellitech has revealed the launch of the Solo Rescue Plus at Interschutz 2026 in Hannover.

According to the company, the new machine succeeds the widely deployed Solo Rescue in PPE decontamination for fire and rescue services.

Building on the Solo Rescue, the new system is designed to make systematic, compliant post-incident decontamination the operational standard, directly addressing the occupational health crisis of firefighter cancer.

Exposure control

The International Agency for Research on Cancer, the WHO’s cancer research body, classifies firefighting as a Group 1 carcinogen, with contamination routinely travelling from the fireground to stations, vehicles and homes.

Solo Rescue Plus offers purpose-built exposure control, making thorough decontamination fast, consistent and achievable after each incident, Rescue Intellitech added.

“More efficient than our current ones”

Phill Hall of RSNV Fire Academy, Sweden, a Solo Rescue user since 2013 stated: “The new machine is more efficient than our current ones.

“Most gear gets clean after only six minutes and for the really dirty ones a 12-minute programme gives excellent results.

“We’ve also seen significantly lower detergent consumption, maybe 40-50% less, which could save us around 200,000 to 250,000 SEK per year,” he added.

Solo Rescue Plus

Rescue Intellitech explained that the Solo Rescue Plus incorporates re-engineered spray nozzles operating from the sides, upper and lower positions, providing improved coverage across all PPE types.

The rotating basket works in combination with the nozzles to ensure full coverage with no blind spots, while a programme option to disable the lower spray helps prevent water ingress when washing boots.

A fresh water function allows services to replace water after every cycle, meeting the strictest decontamination protocols.

The company added that efficiency is further enhanced by a reduced wash tank volume, resulting in lower detergent and water usage, decreased running costs and shorter fill and heat-up times.

Four integrated dosing pumps let services tailor cleaning product dosage to their specific protocols, whether using separate cleaning agents, defoamer, disinfectant or any combination required by their workflow.

“Operationally achievable after every incident”

Nick Croad, Area Sales Manager, UK and Ireland, Rescue Intellitech commented: “We believe clean gear should be the standard, not the exception.

“Solo Rescue Plus is built on direct feedback from fire services and exists to make compliant decontamination operationally achievable, after every incident, not just when time allows,” he concluded.

Availability

According to the company, Solo Rescue Plus is expected to be available in the UK from autumn 2026.

It carries a 24-month parts and labour warranty.

How aerial firefighting platforms improve access and control during complex fire incidents

Bronto Skylift explains how aerial firefighting platforms support safer firefighter access, elevated suppression and improved operational control across urban, industrial and port environments

Fire and rescue services face incidents where restricted access and height can affect firefighter safety. Urban areas include tall buildings and façades that can be difficult to reach from ground level. Industrial sites, including ports and petrochemical facilities, add hazardous materials and restricted approach routes.

Their value is no longer defined only by height. A platform creates a safer operating position, places crews or monitors where they are needed and delivers extinguishing agents from a controlled location.

Why aerial firefighting platforms are designed for different operational risks

Fire risks vary between regions and operating environments. A municipal fire service in a dense city centre faces different demands from an emergency team protecting a refinery or port. The equipment must reflect those differences.

Truck-mounted aerial platforms have become an established option for fire departments because they combine extinguishing capacity with rescue capability. With vertical reach ranging from 28 to more than 100 metres and the ability to reach below ground level, they can be used across high-rise buildings and difficult access points.

Stefano Leporale, Fire & Rescue Director at Bronto Skylift, identifies versatility as the defining factor in urban response: “The urban landscape holds a multitude of structures requiring the utmost versatility from firefighting equipment. Versatility is the single most important benefit of an aerial platform.”

That versatility concerns configuration as well as movement. Pump capacity, water and foam systems, cage design and control options can be adapted to the risk the platform is expected to address.

Configuring aerial firefighting platforms for municipal and industrial response

Municipal and industrial firefighting place different technical demands on aerial equipment.

In municipal environments, platforms must support rescue and suppression at the same time. They need to be lighter and manoeuvrable, with the ability to work around confined streets and restricted access points. Integrated cage systems allow crews to work at height with their equipment, supporting rescue operations from a stable position.

In industrial environments, the main demand is often high-output suppression. Fires in petrochemical or oil and gas settings can involve hazardous materials and pressurised systems. These incidents require high water discharge capacity, foam application and the monitor positioned at a safe distance from heat or toxic atmospheres.

Industrial aerial platforms are often built with larger water and foam capacity and higher pump performance. In some industrial models, the rescue cage can be omitted in favour of water and foam towers, with powder systems added where the risk profile requires them.

How aerial firefighting platforms improve urban and industrial fire access

In a high-rise incident, internal access can be delayed, obstructed or unsafe. An aerial platform gives crews an external route to the working area and allows firefighting or rescue tasks to be carried out from a controlled elevated position.

The cage is central to municipal use. It allows personnel and equipment to be positioned at height, supporting rescue work and suppression without relying solely on internal stairwells or fixed systems.

Industrial incidents can develop in environments where direct approach exposes firefighters to radiant heat, toxic smoke or unstable structures. Aerial platforms reduce that exposure by placing the extinguishing system above or beyond the hazard.

In petrochemical and oil and gas operations, integrated foam systems allow elevated application onto pressurised tanks, loading racks or pipeline manifolds. Remote control and camera options allow the unit to be operated from a distance, keeping firefighters further from the hazard area.

Ports present a different set of access problems. Standard pumpers may struggle to reach parts of the incident ground, particularly where the target is above deck level or below the surrounding surface. An aerial platform gives fire and rescue services a way to apply water or foam from height onto ships or port-side structures.

How Hamburg Fire and Rescue Service uses the Bronto F70RPX

Hamburg Fire and Rescue Service provides a practical example of how an aerial platform can be configured around local operating conditions. The service operates one of the tallest aerial rescue platforms in Germany, the Bronto F70RPX, known locally as the TMF 70. The 70-metre platform was developed in close cooperation with Hamburg and tailored to the city’s requirements.

The F70RPX can operate in winds up to 12.5 m/s. An integrated anemometer monitors wind speed continuously and automatically limits movement if conditions exceed the safe threshold. The Bronto+ control system monitors outrigger width, boom angle, platform load and other operating parameters to support safe deployment.

For Hamburg, the platform was acquired to close a defined operational need. Lars Scheugl, Instructor at Hamburg Fire and Rescue Service, said: “The F70RPX is a great acquisition for us. It improves our ability to reach high places and is vital for the city of Hamburg.”

The platform provides a working height of 70 metres and a horizontal outreach of 33 metres. At 40 metres, the boom still delivers 28 metres of outreach, supporting up-and-over access across roofs and façades. The water monitor can provide a throw distance of up to 100 metres using water, foam or a combined mixture. The unit also includes an integrated Cobra Cutting System. This uses high-pressure water mixed with abrasive material to cut through walls or roofs from the outside, allowing crews to begin attacking a fire without entering the structure.

Operational experience shaping aerial firefighting platform design

The Hamburg platform was jointly designed with technical coordination by Thorsten Ahrens, Technical Procurement of Hamburg Fire and Rescue Service. Scheugl and his team also contributed operational experience from special vehicle use and active firefighting.

This cooperation influenced control logic and cage layout. The aim was to produce a platform suited to Hamburg’s working environment, including industrial facilities and maritime exposure.

The result is a platform that supports work at height and below ground level. The hydraulic outrigger system and control mechanics support stability at full outreach or on uneven terrain.

Scheugl described how this applies in port conditions: “When we’re working here in the harbour, we often face accessibility issues involving ships and various harbour operations. With this unit we can perform rescue operations and other work below ground level.”

After initial training by Bronto Skylift, Hamburg Fire and Rescue Service developed a dedicated training programme for special-purpose vehicles. Clear control layouts and an intuitive control system helped crews bring the unit into service.

Why access and control remain critical in aerial firefighting operations

The role of an aerial platform is best understood through the operational problem it solves. Fire and rescue services need to place crews and extinguishing agents where ground access is limited, unsafe or too slow.

A municipal service may need cage capacity and manoeuvrability for rescue work. An industrial operator may need higher foam output and remote operation. A port authority may need reach above deck level and below quay level.

Height alone does not define capability. Outreach and stability shape how the equipment performs, along with below-ground access and extinguishing output.

Aerial platforms extend operational reach by allowing crews to work from a controlled distance from the hazard. Their value sits in creating access where it is restricted and maintaining control where conditions leave little margin for error.

Gasmet launches a rack-mountable FTIR gas analyser

Gasmet Technologies has released the GT7000 Tellus, a rack-mountable FTIR gas analyser for multi-gas analysis.

Designed for system-level use

GT7000 Tellus supports reliable gas analysis in conditions where stability, repeatability and integration are essential.

The company highlighted that the analyser is suited for changing process conditions and continuous or repeated measurement requirements.

Typical applications include process gas analysis, emissions monitoring, laboratory testing and validation, combustion research, carbon capture and CO₂ purity monitoring, as well as air quality monitoring.

Measurement setups can be configured through software without hardware changes.

The rack-mountable format enables installation alongside other instruments as part of a broader measurement setup.

Measurement conditions can be configured with selectable temperatures, optical path lengths and pressure compensation options.

Proven FTIR technology

According to the company, the measurement capability is based on Gasmet FTIR technology, with performance validated through EN15267‑4 QAL1 certification of the GT6000 Mobilis platform.

C-TEC releases new technical help videos

Leading life-safety systems manufacturer, C-TEC, has launched a new series of CAST XFP technical help videos.

Created to give engineers clear, visual, on-demand guidance on the installation and operation of its powerful and super-intuitive CAST XFP fire detection and alarm systems, the videos include practical advice on updating firmware, auto addressing, adding new devices and taking downloads from the panel using a PC.

Terry Gordon, C-TEC’s Engineering/Technical Support Manager, said: “Our new help videos are designed to assist anyone installing CAST XFP. As a soft-addressing system, it’s very flexible and can programmed with our handheld programmer or by using the panel’s auto address function for fast sequential programming of all devices. Our videos highlight all these options and also share guidance on identifying loop integrity faults, updating firmware and much more.” 

Other initiatives introduced recently to boost the company’s technical support services include the creation of a new CAST technical support team, a new dedicated tech support telephone number and a Cloud-based AI-enabled call logging software system.

New appointment for Siemens fire safety division

Siemens fire safety division appointment supports push toward connected, intelligent fire protection.

The Siemens fire safety division has been strengthened with the appointment of Nicholas Bryan as Innovation & Consultant Manager.

Bryan joins from Siemens’ Utilities Division, where he spent two years working on system integration for critical national infrastructure, with responsibility spanning fire, security and building management systems (BMS) integration.

Before that, he spent a decade in the facilities management sector, holding roles at major providers including Mitie and Sodexo. In those positions, he focused on business development and supporting blue-chip clients across complex service environments.

His move comes as Siemens fire safety advances its portfolio with the introduction of the Cerberus and Sinteso Nova range, which aims to shift fire detection toward more proactive, connected and cloud-enabled safety solutions.

Bryan said: “I am delighted to be joining the team to engage with specifiers and consultants in demonstrating the potential our fire offering provides in the journey towards autonomous buildings. Through my background I understand the importance of integration so will also be focusing on that message and how Siemens as a business can help with our extensive portfolio of products and systems.”

Comelit-PAC deploys fire alarm system to Genting Casino

Comelit-PAC has revealed that in partnership with installation specialist VTF&S has upgraded the fire alarm system technology at Genting Casino in Westfield Stratford City.

As the UK’s largest casino floor, including the biggest poker room in the country, Genting Stratford operates around the clock, welcoming visitors day and night. Any upgrade to critical infrastructure needed to be carried out without interrupting the flow of customers and staff, while maintaining strict safety standards throughout.

According to Comelit-PAC, the casino’s previous fire alarm system operated on a closed protocol, which had become increasingly restrictive. Even minor adjustments required specialist call-outs, increasing costs and slowing response times.

By contrast, Comelit-PAC said its four-loop fire system offers a more flexible, open protocol approach, enabling easier maintenance and reducing long-term operational expense.

The upgrade also ensures improved system reliability and faster fault identification, better suited to the demands of a busy, high-traffic venue.

Beyond the technical and visual improvements, the inclusion of Comelit-PAC’s free cloud connection allows the system to be monitored and supported remotely.

Secure cloud access enables engineers to diagnose and often resolve issues without waiting for a site visit.

VTF&S installation – The installation was carried out by VTF&S while the casino remained fully operational. Working in a live environment required careful planning and coordination, supported by Comelit-PAC’s technical team. The company said that this collaborative approach enabled the upgrade to be delivered with minimal disruption, while also setting the foundation for faster, more cost-effective ongoing support through remote connectivity.

According to the company, the project’s success relied on close collaboration between Genting Casino, VTF&S and Comelit-PAC.

Clear communication and planning ensured the system could be upgraded safely and efficiently while the venue continued to operate as normal, added Comelit-PAC.

The Collapsible Spill Berm ECCOTARP helps contain hazardous substances after traffic accidents, during liquid transfer operations, and in many other emergency situations.

The berm features a flexible design, allowing easy deployment in confined spaces or around obstacles, and is made from chemically resistant material. Integrated manipulation straps make handling the filled berm easier, with a load capacity of up to 200 kg.

The berm is available in many size options. Larger models from the ECCOTARP range can also be used as decontamination stations.
