Geofire expands fire safety product manufacturing to Bangalore

Geofire has announced the relocation of the manufacturing of several key fire safety products to its British Engines Group facility in Bangalore, India.

The products that will now be produced at the SG India facility include the Type 87 Doormouse, Type 59 Conquest, and the Agrippa acoustic fire door holder.

This strategic move aims to leverage the identical CNC capability and cutting tool technology of the 7,000 square feet Indian facility, ensuring rigorous quality control measures comparable to those in the UK.

Both the UK and Indian facilities have been audited and approved by Bureau Veritas for ISO9001, ISO14001, and ISO45001 standards and Warrington Fire for the EN1155 FPC.

All products will also carry the CE mark specific to the SG India manufacturing facility.

Details of relocated product manufacturing

Geofire’s Type 87 Doormouse is a door holder designed to prevent doors from slamming shut during fire incidents, facilitating safe evacuation by holding doors open securely.

The Type 59 Conquest fire door holder combines functionality with aesthetics, providing reliable fire door control while maintaining an unobtrusive appearance.

The Agrippa acoustic fire door holder uses innovative technology to hold fire doors open legally and safely.

These products will be manufactured in the new Bangalore facility, ensuring consistency in quality and adherence to international standards.

FSi Promat releases white paper on accommodating dynamic movement in fire stopping

Importance of dynamic movement in fire stopping

FSi Promat has launched a white paper highlighting the impact dynamic movement can have on the effectiveness of penetration seals and ways to ensure passive fire protection remains compliant for the lifetime of a building, as reported by FSi Promat.

Dynamic movement in buildings can cause breaches, tears, and cracks in construction materials, including fire stopping used to contain the spread of flames, smoke, heat, and toxic gases.

Despite the serious potential impact on building safety, accommodating dynamic movement in fire stopping plans is often overlooked.

Existing standards and the need for flexibility

Approved Document B (fire safety) mandates the need for an “appropriate fire seal” that will last for the building’s lifetime.

However, no formal testing mechanism under the EN1366-3 standard or European Technical Assessment (ETA) exists specifically for movement within penetration seals, leading to this element often falling out of the scope of building design.

The new white paper, ‘Managing Movement: Accommodating dynamic movement in fire stopping for penetration seals,’ examines the impact of movement on fire stopping, existing legislation, guidance on the issue, and FSi Promat’s engineered solution, along with the evaluation supporting it.

Insights from FSi Promat

Craig Abbott, Technical Director at FSi Promat, part of the Etex group, explained: “Service penetrations are part and parcel of construction and must be accommodated within passive fire protection utilising appropriate fire stopping systems.

“However, where movement is present in a building, it is essential that sufficient flexibility is built into this system to mitigate the effects of dynamic movement on the performance of the penetration seal.”

Abbott further emphasised the importance of early engagement with manufacturers to address issues such as movement effectively and ensure lifetime compliance.a

He stated: “The white paper details the work we have undertaken to successfully demonstrate how movement of +/- 25 per cent can be accommodated with the right fire stopping solution.”

Advancing Fire Safety: Interview with Russ Leavitt, Executive Chairman of Telgian

Russ Leavitt, Executive Chairman of Telgian, shares pivotal moments from his career and the evolution of Telgian in enhancing fire safety

With over four decades of dedication to advancing fire safety through innovative solutions and comprehensive training, Russ Leavitt, Executive Chairman of Telgian has profoundly influenced the fire protection industry.

This conversation delves into his substantial contributions, the evolution of Telgian under his leadership, and his insights on current challenges and future directions in fire safety management.

What initially drew you into the fire protection industry?

I came into the fire protection industry almost by accident.

I discovered early on that it was rare to have the opportunity to earn a living while doing something that mattered—saving lives and protecting property.

As a result, I quickly took every opportunity given to develop my knowledge and skills.

I became active in the local Society of Fire Protection Engineers chapter, earned my certifications as a fire protection system designer, and volunteered for projects that my fellow designers avoided.

In less than two years I was promoted to lead designer where I supervised a team of individuals who were much older and had more experience than me.

It was simply my nature to say ‘Yes’ to every new challenge offered.

That willingness to do whatever needed to be done led to a series of incredible opportunities.

What pivotal moments have defined your journey to Executive Chairman at Telgian?

I had always wanted to have my own company.

With a partner, and the support of my employer, I founded a design firm that offered fire protection design services to contractors, architects, building owners, and just about anyone else we could find.

My wife and I took all of our savings, retirement funds, and with the use of personal credit cards, financed the start of Fire Design Group.

It was a difficult time, as within a couple of months of founding the business a severe economic recession struck southern California.

We stuck it out.

The biggest moment of my career path took place when I received a call from my current partner, Jim Tomes, seeking design assistance for his father’s small fire and life safety consultancy.

Two weeks later we merged our two companies and, as we say: The rest is history.

Can you talk about the evolution Telgian has undergone since its inception?

One of the first characteristics that we recognised was the diversity in backgrounds and perspectives of the founding members pertaining to fire and life safety.

We were formed with individuals from the public fire service, engineering, contracting, and system design.

It was eye opening when discussing a project or customer issue to witness the different perspectives each of us brought to the table.

We realised that when we gave equal attention to each other’s biases, it allowed us to formulate solutions from a 360-degree view, which our customers recognised as unique compared to their dealings with other firms.

Because of the lack of clear direction in the fire and building codes for these unique properties, we were deeply involved in the development of protection criteria though fire testing, codes and standards development, and risk management.

We intentionally challenged the status-quo regarding traditional fire protection approaches.

We were the leaders in removing the use of smoke curtains in sprinklered warehouses, changing how smoke and heat vents were utilised, and in the development of Control Mode Specific Application sprinkler technology.

A major strategic decision was to answer our customers’ repeated requests to provide fire protection inspection and testing services.

This was outside our core consulting and engineering expertise, but we decided to take on this new service line.

Our model conducted the needed system inspections and tests, but we did not provide repair or corrective services.

This was to eliminate the potential conflict of interest that exists where service providers do inspections and then perform and corrective actions or needed repairs.

It allowed us to objectively provide our recommendations to the customer.

This part of our business quickly became our biggest revenue producer and for a time, we lost some of our identity as an engineering and consulting firm.

This led us to split the company into two separate legal entities under a holding company named Telgian Holdings, Inc.

We were the first, and still one of only a few companies that provide the complete portfolio of services for fire and life safety, from conceptual design to system maintenance.

How has your involvement with NFPA influenced fire safety standards?

I have served on various NFPA Technical Committees for nearly three decades.

For many of the committees I represented owner or user stakeholders.

I have always tried to focus on the term ‘reasonable’ when it comes to code and standard requirements.

Codes and standards cannot guarantee one hundred percent success even if they are implemented in complete compliance.

The cost of a requirement must be evaluated with the protection provided for life safety or property.

Incorporating good risk management must be a part of the development process along with the practicality of a requirement.

When serving as the chair of various committees I always challenged members to consider what problem was being solved by a proposed change to the standard or code.

We sometimes create a solution and then go ‘looking for the problem.’  I believe that I have had a positive impact in ensuring that we apply the ‘reasonableness’ factor on the committees I have served or chaired.

Finally, I have worked to ensure that NFPA codes and standards can be applied internationally.

Over the past 125 years, NFPA committees have been United States-centric.

I have actively recruited international experts to participate in the NFPA standards making process and because of my, and other’s efforts, we are developing a more global view of fire protection and life safety.

If we are to have a significant impact in increasing the level of fire and life safety globally, we must share knowledge and skills.

The NFPA Fire and Life Safety Ecosystem demonstrates that having up-to-date standards and codes without a skilled workforce and knowledgeable enforcers will result in little progress.

What are some of the approaches Telgian is exploring to enhance fire mitigation?

One of our six core values states, ‘Innovation is the key to our future success.’  We are deeply involved in the supply chain vertical.

The evolution of Automatic Storage Retrieval Systems (ASRS) is reshaping the warehousing, storage, and distribution industry.

We have conducted 250 large- and small-scale fire tests over the last three years to develop new ways to protect this fast-evolving landscape.

We are always looking for more efficient methods for our customers to manage their fire risks.

For example, after conducting a rigorous examination for a global customer of the change in fire risk created by the changes in products and their handling, a decision was made to increase the protection provided by their existing fire protection systems.

The project involved over two thousand locations and was budgeted at $1 billion.

We developed a plan to conduct fire tests for the most common protection schemes to determine the most efficient methods to make the conversion.

This customer spent $10 million on the testing, but the information learned allowed the retrofit budget to be halved—a savings of $500 million.

Finally, fire tests have traditionally been used to determine the best protection schemes with specific types of sprinklers installed in specific arrangements.

We initiated a series of full-scale fire tests to examine the ability of existing fire sprinkler systems to protect real world storage scenarios such as blocked flue spaces or irregular storage arrangements.

The tests have created a wealth of information for our insurance partners and customers to use in evaluating the risks presented by these various real-world conditions.

According to our partners at UL Solutions, they have never seen a test program of this scale looking at the risks where protection schemes are not strictly followed.

What legacy do you hope to leave in the fire safety industry?

I, along with the other shareholders and officers of Telgian have always wanted to build an organisation that would live beyond our lifetimes.

I hope to be remembered as someone who was passionate about fire and life safety, while sensitive to the needs along with the restraints of all stakeholders.

I have tried to exercise reasonableness in my approach while not being afraid to question the status quo.

I have also learned to view fire and life safety through a global lens, recognising that there are cultural and societal concerns that cannot be ignored while working towards a fire safe world.

My advice to the next generation is two-fold. First, say ‘Yes!’ when asked to go outside your comfort zone.

Do not let your fear of failure stop you from developing and growing, both as a fire and life safety professional and as a businessperson.

Second: Be ever-learning.

The worst possible answer we can give to a question of ‘why we do something a particular way’ is to say, ‘Well, it is the way we have always done it.’ 

An excellent mantra is to ‘Question and then Innovate.’  I can think of few other professions where someone can contribute to the greater good while providing for their family and loved ones.

Doorway dilemmas: Addressing the critical gaps in fire door installation

Richard Kowalski, Technical Manager for Doors at Stairways Midland, discusses the critical gaps in fire door installation and the urgent need for regulation

Is it time fire door installation became a regulated profession? Richard Kowalski, Technical Manager for Doors at Stairways Midlands, an expert in his field with more than 25 years’ experience and a member of the British Woodworking Federation Council, sets out his argument.

Fire doors are a carefully engineered fire safety device required by law in many circumstances to help safeguard life in the event of the fire. It is not enough that they are compliant in themselves – to work effectively, it is essential they are fitted correctly. Yet, there is no formal qualification required to be able to fit a fire door, and the profession remains unregulated. Kowalski is among the leading figures in the sector calling for that to change.

What is the status quo?

While there is no mandatory qualification needed to install a fire door a level of expertise and competency is required: the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (RRO/FSO) sets out that fire doors should be installed by a “competent person” however a question mark remains over ‘what competency means in this context,’ explains Kowalski.

There are voluntary third-party certification schemes for installation contractors such FIRAS run by Q-Mark for example, or Certifire certification. Adds Kowalski: “These schemes mean that the installation company has to have processes and procedures in place – they need to be ISO certificated, attending training courses, inspected both on site and within their offices and in their processes, and know how a fire door works.

“The trouble is each scheme is run differently. The schemes are not mandatory, and they can be very expensive to both be a member of and to manage.

“There is a real mixed bag out there, with some contractors having have achieved this high standard, and others who think finding a course online makes them a competent person – especially, in my experience, when it comes to small residential developments outside of big cities.

“A gas engineer couldn’t install a boiler legally unless they are registered with Gas Safe, with all the requirements and training that entails. Yet any joiner can turn up on site and install a fire door. The implications for safety can be just as serious.”

Leaving the door open for mistakes

While there are examples of good practice, without proper regulation, the door is left open for serious mistakes, believes Kowalski: “While awareness has improved, we are still turning up on sites and seeing big gaps around doors, doors in the wrong openings or the use of the wrong mastic, because the installer doesn’t know to check the fire certificate and look at the minimum and maximum gaps for that product to make sure it is compatible with that specific door set.

“With the new regulatory requirements around ongoing inspection and maintenance of fire doors, we are seeing a number of projects from the past ten years revisited – uncovering fire doors that were never installed correctly and would never have been viable or compliant, which goes to show the extent of this problem.

“We’ve even seen inspectors go in and pull off the architrave and find there was no mastic at all between the frame and the structural opening in any of the doors. You can have the best possible fire door which is 100% compliant – but fire will find the weakest point. In this case, they almost might as well have left it open!

Taking responsibility

New legislation also demands more from those specifying, installing and responsible for maintaining fire doors – there is a golden thread of responsibility for ensuring the door is compliant and safe.

Kowalski adds: “There is a misapprehension that installers don’t have responsibility once they’re off site – but they can be held liable for up to 30 years under changes to the Defective Premises Act brought in under Building Safety Act 2022 – and that applies to all dwellings.

“There is a lot for them to do, especially in the case of traditional hung doors. Installers have a responsibility for ensuring the door leaf is compliant and compatible with all the components, from the intumescent, to the ironmongery, to the closer, as well as getting the fitting right.

Unfortunately, there is “a massive education gap,” adds Kowalski: “Not just among joiners and installers, but also site managers, buyers, the housebuilders themselves. Everyone has responsibility to get this right, but it often comes down to NHBC or building control inspectors when they come on site to uncover the issues.

“As manufacturers we take our responsibility very seriously. We send out installation instructions with every order acknowledgement and at call off. Every door has a QR code which links to installation instructions, and we have luggage tags on the bottom of every door to make people aware that the undercut might need adjusting – again with a QR code linking to instructions. Our toolbox talks and training are also always available to joiners and contractors.

“It’s not enough to think ‘I’ve been a chippy for 25 years so I’m competent’, or ‘we’ve done it this way for years and never had a problem’. You might have been doing it wrong for years unfortunately.

“While this remains an unregulated profession, we are still going to see mistakes that mean fire doors fail inspection, or even worse, fail in the event of a fire and cost someone’s life.

“That is why it’s so important that we resolve this issue of competency in legislature and ensure that every fire door is fitted correctly first time.”

ROCKWOOL unveils SCB cavity barrier meeting latest BS EN standards

SCB cavity barrier launched by ROCKWOOL

Stone wool insulation manufacturer ROCKWOOL has developed a new cavity barrier called SCB.

The product is an expansion of its current range of cavity fire-stopping products and is tested to meet the requirements of BS EN 1366-4:2021.

This development demonstrates the company’s commitment to offering products tested to the latest BS EN standards, while providing customers with a more streamlined range.

ROCKWOOL SCB combines the functions of the currently available TCB and PWCB, enhancing and expanding their applications.

SCB will be available in two widths: 110mm as standard and 200mm for use where a party wall meets the external cavity.

It is suitable for use in masonry, timber frame, and steel frame cavities up to 290mm and can be installed horizontally or vertically.

Features and benefits of SCB

SCB has been tested with a steel frame substrate in addition to timber, addressing customer requests.

Will Wigfield, Product Manager HVAC & Fire Protection at ROCKWOOL, stated: “With a fire rating of up to E120, I45, subject to the application, we are confident that SCB will support specifiers seeking to meet and exceed performance guidelines – for example, the E30, I15, Approved Document B (ADB Volume 1) criteria relating to dwellings.”

The SCB aims to replace the existing TCB and PWCB products, which will be phased out following the launch of SCB on 15th May 2024.

ROCKWOOL recommends switching to SCB specification in advance where possible.

Specifications written prior to the expiration of the TCB and PWCB certifications will remain valid, and the products will be available until 15th November 2024.

Transition from TCB and PWCB to SCB

ROCKWOOL’s transition plan ensures that the shift to SCB is seamless for customers.

The introduction of SCB as a replacement for TCB and PWCB is a strategic move to consolidate and improve product offerings.

Customers are advised to update their specifications to SCB in anticipation of the phase-out of the older products.

Quelfire Early Engagement Case Study: RUH’s Dyson Cancer Centre

The Royal United Hospitals Bath (RUH) is a 52-acre site that provides specialist, general acute, and emergency treatment for around 410,000 people.

In October 2023, the RUH opened the Dyson Cancer Centre to help transform the care provided for patients, families, and carers.

Over three storeys tall, the new centre is located next to the main entrance of the RUH. It will bring most of the RUH’s cancer services, including research teams, to one facility.

As the selected manufacturer, we worked closely with the main contractor, Kier Construction, and the firestopping contractor, Optimum Drywall.

The main objective was to achieve a good-quality design that was fit for purpose, and to build using suitably fire tested details in line with industry best practices and regulations. 

What was the main challenge during the project?

The primary challenge faced by the client involved ensuring the required services had appropriate fire test evidence for the proposed supporting construction.

For instance, many of the proposed walls used single-skin plasterboard. While we had suitable solutions for the proposed pipes and cables, there was a lack of tested solutions for metal ducts and dampers passing through them.

This required a risk assessment led by the fire engineer, BB7, to check previous tested details used on projects and details from the damper manufacturer.

Another issue arose with pneumatic pipes, typically used in hospitals and considerably thinner than standard plastic pipes.

This ultimately led to several untested applications, requiring the client to rethink the design.

What solutions did we reach to resolve any issues?

We had worked with Optimum Drywall on other projects; thus, they recommended the client engage with us to ensure the design of the building was compliant before entering the build stage.

The first early engagement meeting occurred in December 2021, followed by corresponding meetings.

Cross-party communication was a pivotal factor when resolving any issues faced; Optimum Drywall was included in the early meetings, sharing insights into the practicability of suggested installs. We also worked with other parties, including BB7, to ensure everyone was aligned.

Due to the available time and flexibility, we had the opportunity to incorporate the pneumatic pipes proposed on this project into our ongoing test programme for the client.

We tested two specific scenarios: 110mm pneumatic pipes with a 1.8mm wall thickness and 160mm pneumatic pipes with a 3.2mm wall thickness.

This ultimately meant the client could progress with their proposals. When ducts and dampers were proposed in single-skin walls, it was proposed to change the walls to a double-skin plasterboard system to work with tested systems.

Another scenario we could advise on was a three-sided plasterboard wall. On the third and fourth sides, there was a concrete soffit.

We recommended a tested detail allowing deflection between the wall and the soffit. This permitted the services to be placed as high as possible.

What kind of success did the client enjoy with our services/ products?

This development proved the benefits of adopting an early engagement approach in firestopping and was a prime example of all parties working together to achieve the same end goal: protecting people and property.

Early engagement brought together the requirements, for instance, the wall and services requirements, and allowed the client to thoroughly understand the presented tested details.

This ensured the client could resolve any issues at the design stage and work around the tested details available due to the flexibility of the design.

For instance, the client could confidently employ the large metal trunking they required because we already had a tested solution.

In cases where we lacked a tested solution, and the client could not go back and redesign, we dedicated the time to conduct the necessary testing for the specific application.

This provided essential test data for the client and benefited the entire industry, particularly in sectors like healthcare, where pneumatic pipes are increasingly being used.

Stone wool insulation manufacturer ROCKWOOL has launched a new fire barrier product, Fire Barrier EN, designed to improve building fire safety.

The product is tested to meet the latest BS EN 1364-1:2015 standards.

The 50mm Fire Barrier EN comes with an option of a black foil facing on one or both sides, suitable for single- and double-layer systems.

Enhanced fire resistance features

Specifications written before this date remain valid, but ROCKWOOL recommends updating to Fire Barrier EN to benefit from the latest EN testing standards.

The existing Fire Barrier and Fire Barrier Slab products will continue to support ongoing projects until 15th November 2024, after which they will be formally discontinued.

Introduction to the FDM training facility

Fast Signs Manchester has teamed up with Bury-based UAP, the UK’s leading supplier of fire-resistant door hardware, to introduce a unique fire safety training academy.

This partnership marks a significant step in enhancing fire safety education within the industry.

The newly established FDM training facility is aimed at training fire door maintenance operatives, reflecting the organisations’ commitment to improving standards and ensuring safety across the board.

The FDM academy, described as an ‘Academy of Excellence’, intends to educate, train, and upskill fire door inspectors, installers, and maintainers.

This initiative is in response to the heightened awareness of fire safety, especially following the tragic Grenfell Tower incident in June 2017.

The importance of rigorous training and education in fire door safety has been underscored by this and similar incidents, prompting a more thorough approach to fire safety in residential buildings.

Enhancing fire safety and regulations

In light of recent updates to fire safety regulations in January 2023, Fast Signs conducted research into the preparedness of local fire stations regarding high-rise buildings.

Findings from the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service indicated that only a small fraction of the required building and external wall plans had been received, highlighting a significant gap in compliance and safety measures.

The FDM facility spans 3,000 square feet and features a bespoke design ideal for practical training.

It includes over twenty different types of fire doors from various suppliers, providing comprehensive hands-on experience for trainees.

This facility aims to address the immediate educational and also set a benchmark for fire safety training across the UK.

The recent Fire Safety Event served as a pivotal platform for advancing discussions on passive fire protection (PFP) within the construction sector.

The event featured a series of expert-led talks that drew significant attention, highlighting the critical role of PFP in enhancing building safety.

The ASFP’s Passive Fire Experience trailer was a key attraction, providing a dedicated space for industry professionals to engage in meaningful conversations and forge connections aimed at driving change within the industry.

Day one of the conference saw Niall Rowan, ASFP’s Technical & Regulatory Affairs Officer, opening the discussions with a focus on the evolving responsibilities of manufacturers in installed passive fire protection.

The sessions included insights from David Roulstone and Paul Nash, who delved into building movement and fire-stopping penetrations.

Highlights from the presentations

The following days continued to feature high-caliber presentations from industry experts.

Karthick Govathanam discussed the PFP requirements in roof spaces, while Antonino Piazza updated attendees on Rockwool’s innovations in PFP.

Simon Ince presented a developer program for evaluating firestop systems, followed by Paul McSoley who addressed construction procurement and product safety, underlining the significance of Regulation 7.

The event concluded with talks from Adam Shipstone and Stuart Southall, and a notable presentation on PFP design and implementation by Moe Elmasry.
