Mediterranean diet proposed as a practical model

A new study has found that firefighter helmets lose their ability to reflect heat depending on their colour and surface condition.

According to Fire Safety Journal, Volume 155, chrome plated helmets reflected up to 83 percent of radiative heat, while coloured variants showed reflectivity as low as 3 percent.

When contaminated by soot or combustion deposits, reflectivity dropped to around 36 percent, even for chrome helmets.

The research, led by A. Collin and colleagues in France, analysed 16 helmet samples currently in use by Fire and Rescue Services across France, England and Canada.

The study focused on directional-hemispherical reflectivity and absorptivity across infrared wavelengths, measuring how helmets performed at temperatures up to 1000 K (727°C /1340°F).

Helmet types and thermal performance examined

The study used infrared spectrum analysis to examine heat reflection in helmets used in emergency response.

Chrome plated helmets showed the best thermal protection by reflecting most radiative energy and limiting absorption.

Coloured helmets had much lower reflectivity, depending on pigment, with red helmets absorbing nearly all heat exposure.

Soot or other residue significantly reduced reflectivity, regardless of original surface, suggesting that maintenance and cleaning influence thermal protection.

The findings build on earlier experimental work, including that of Barnett (2003), who studied abrasion and surface degradation in helmet materials under high heat.

Sample and standards used in testing

Sixteen helmets were tested as part of the research.

All samples met EN 443:97, the European standard for firefighter helmets.

The helmets were sourced from French fire departments including SDIS 54 (Meurthe-et-Moselle) and SDIS 49 (Maine-et-Loire), as well as from LCPP (Laboratoire Central de la Préfecture de Paris).

The helmets varied in colour and manufacturer, but none were named for confidentiality reasons.

The report said cities and major destinations have also faced disruption due to smoke and emergency conditions.

The growing scale and unpredictability of wildfire seasons were cited as a key factor for increased travel risks.

Advice includes checking official alerts, such as those issued by the European Forest Fire Information System.

The report recommends carrying emergency plans and monitoring local news in real-time.

Travellers were also advised to consider insurance policies that cover natural disaster-related disruption.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has reported that Canada will provide CAD 13.5 million (nearly $10 million) to the Global Fire Management Hub to strengthen international wildfire preparedness and ecosystem protection.

The pledge supports the Kananaskis Wildfire Charter, a joint initiative launched at last month’s G7 Summit in Canada.

The charter aims to improve global cooperation in responding to extreme wildfires, and Canada’s contribution will advance the Hub’s integrated fire management efforts.

Canada’s Associate Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Cindy Termorshuizen said the country’s leadership role in the charter reflects its commitment to global fire resilience.

The Global Fire Management Hub is coordinated by FAO alongside partner agencies including the UN Environment Programme and the Global Fire Monitoring Centre.

Support for global integrated fire management

The new funds will expand the Global Fire Management Hub’s work in supporting countries to shift from reactive fire suppression to proactive fire preparedness.

The FAO said the funding will enhance the capacity of governments and agencies to collaborate across jurisdictions and disciplines during wildfire events.

The Global Fire Management Hub focuses on coordination between science, policy and local action to reduce fire risk.

According to FAO Forestry Director Zhimin Wu, the funding will strengthen cooperation to minimise the economic and environmental effects of wildfire.

Wu said: “Wildfires adversely affect biodiversity, ecological services, human well-being and national economies, and can be especially devastating for developing countries.

The Kananaskis Wildfire Charter was endorsed by all G7 leaders, as well as leaders from Australia, India, Mexico, South Africa and the Republic of Korea.

The charter aims to build international readiness for extreme wildfires through cooperative planning, data sharing and mutual assistance.

According to data sourced by FASTSIGNS from 24 fire and rescue services through Freedom of Information requests, an average of 32 per cent of building plans and 31 per cent of external wall plans for high-rise residential buildings remain unsubmitted.

These documents are required under the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022, which came into force on 23 January 2023 following the Grenfell Tower fire in 2017.

The regulation mandates that responsible persons for high-rise residential buildings of 7 storeys or more must provide up-to-date building and external wall plans to their local fire service.

FASTSIGNS stated that the lack of these plans limits fire services’ ability to prepare for emergencies and obstructs residents’ access to clear exit signage during incidents.

Regional differences in plan submissions

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service recorded the highest submission rates, receiving 157 per cent of required building plans and 164 per cent of wall plans for its 42 high-rise buildings.

According to FASTSIGNS, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service ranked second, reporting submission rates of 108 per cent for building plans and 118 per cent for wall plans.

Oxfordshire, Derbyshire, North Yorkshire and Shropshire all reported 100 per cent submissions across both categories.

In contrast, Avon Fire and Rescue Service reported the lowest building plan submissions at just 10 per cent across its 239 high-rise buildings.

Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service received the lowest number of wall plans, with only 22 per cent submitted for its 65 qualifying buildings.

FASTSIGNS stated that the national average across the 24 services surveyed stood at 68 per cent for building plans and 69 per cent for external wall plans.

The findings are based on CE Safety’s analysis of the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) public enforcement register, examining 4,108 notices issued by Fire and Rescue Services (FRSs) between 1 May 2023 and 30 April 2025.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service issued 338 notices during this period, averaging 14 notices per month.

West Yorkshire followed with 317 notices, and Hampshire and Isle of Wight issued 294.

The figures exclude London and provide a regional breakdown of fire risk enforcement activity across England and Wales.

According to CE Safety’s report, the top five regions by total enforcement notices were Leicestershire (338), West Yorkshire (317), Hampshire and Isle of Wight (294), Lancashire (282), and East Sussex (229).
