The Fire Protection Research Foundation and the Fire Safety Research Institute issued a joint notice on 2 June 2025.

They warned that introducing air into this gas buildup could cause ignition.

The warning is based on ongoing research into EV firefighting tactics and suppression tools.

The FPRF tested four approaches: hose streams with and without additives, fire blankets, and firefighting appliances.

Preliminary results will be presented at the NFPA Conference & Expo in Las Vegas on 16 June 2025.

NCVC explained that the study proposes the use of early warning systems, remote sensing and drones as part of an integrated prevention and response strategy.

The study recommends establishing clearly defined roles for official agencies, alongside a joint operations centre to coordinate response.

The organisation stated that these measures aim to improve wildfire detection and containment while supporting ecosystem protection efforts.

New framework for firebreaks and post-fire recovery

The centre confirmed that the study includes guidance for post-fire land rehabilitation, tools to evaluate response performance, and technical field designs for firebreaks.

It stated that these proposed designs use sustainable alternatives suited to Saudi Arabia’s forest environments.

A key recommendation is the development of a national guide for restoring affected areas after wildfire events.

Community volunteers to support wildfire prevention

The NCVC stated that the study includes a mechanism to engage community and volunteer teams in wildfire prevention.

This includes training, capacity-building, and integration with official response operations.

Assessing the limitations and usefulness of AI in technical writing

Elizabeth said artificial intelligence tools can support general understanding of new subject matter, but are not a substitute for manual research and collaboration with product teams.

She said: “AI can be useful for some aspects of documentation work, but most of my work is that of a communicator rather than a copywriter.

“AI relies on its previous exposure, so when working with internal-only documents or brand-new products – especially hardware – it’s often more effective for me to use my own skills to gather notes, engage with product experts and other resources, create diagrams and images, develop document structures, and produce videos.

“Especially for such critical and lifesaving information, I am not comfortable relying on AI too much in this context.

Elizabeth added: “As someone who is still relatively new to this industry, AI can help me quickly grasp unfamiliar concepts in a general way by elaborating on things in a sort of ‘custom’ context.

“There are many existing ways to introduce automation techniques into documentation, such as investing in structured/xml style authoring.

“This can be used to increase efficiency, organisation, and to keep all relevant documents up to date at once without compromising on accuracy or human led information control.

“This change would require overhauling the process significantly and making a substantial financial investment.”

Improving critical incident response and future communication applications

Multitone stated that its MAJAX function, which is designed to send major incident alerts and visualise response data, is one of its key solutions.

Elizabeth said: “All Multitone products help save lives. What could be more exciting and motivating?

“My personal favourite is the MAJAX – Major Incidents feature.

“MAJAX is capable of sending out major incident alerts to large quantities of personnel and teams all at once and using data visualisations to convey essential response data back to the system operator.

“People use this in situations such as large traffic emergencies, terrorist events, and hospitals.

She said: “Mismanaged security and targeted attacks in these sectors could be completely disastrous, so security must be at the forefront of our attention for every product.

Elizabeth also said she would like to see further development of communications solutions for home care.

The survey, conducted in April 2025 by Censuswide and based on responses from 2,000 UK adults, explored how job roles influence eating habits.

According to Oxford Online Pharmacy, 33.33% of firefighters surveyed said workplace snacks were a barrier to weight management.

The company said estate and letting agents reported the highest rate, with 37.5% citing vending machines and workplace snacks as a factor in weight gain.

Survey examines health barriers in the workplace

Oxford Online Pharmacy stated that broadcasters were tied with firefighters at 33.33% in reporting workplace snacks as a problem.

The study also noted that 26.67% of lorry and taxi drivers blamed eating on the job for difficulties with weight loss.

According to the company, these jobs often involve mobile routines and high workloads that limit access to home-cooked meals.

Oxford Online Pharmacy explained that these types of professions frequently operate in high-pressure environments with limited opportunities for food preparation, making quick snacks a more accessible option.

Lack of time and stress contribute to poor diet choices

Oxford Online Pharmacy found that lack of time to cook and workplace stress were additional factors affecting food choices. It reported that people working in mobile or shift-based roles were more likely to experience these barriers.

The company said that stress and limited time can drive workers to rely on fast food and vending machines, which are often calorie-dense and lacking in nutrition.

It added that stress-related eating patterns can lead to overconsumption, especially when healthier alternatives are unavailable during working hours.

Kiran Jones, Clinical Pharmacist at Oxford Online Pharmacy, provided advice for workers and employers to support healthier choices. Jones said: “If grab-and-go and fast-food options are stopping you from eating healthy and nutritious lunches or snacks, it’s time you took back control and packed your own.”

Jones continued: “Instead of relying on quick, unhealthy options, consider packing a lunchbox filled with lean proteins and fruits and vegetables, as well as plenty of nutritious snacks.”

Jones added: “Soups in thermos flasks are also perfect for weight loss if you prefer a hot meal or avoid food wastage by boxing up last night’s leftovers.”

For employers, Jones said: “While you can’t necessarily control what workers eat when they’re on the road, you can switch up the food that’s available in the workplace.”

Jones stated: “Encourage workers to set their own break times where they can eat in peace between jobs.

“Rushing or skipping meals can result in poor food choices later in the day and irregular eating patterns can have an impact on mood and energy levels.”

Jones further recommended: “Workplaces should also ensure employees are aware of any support services that are available to them in and outside of the workplace, for their mental or physical health.”

UK fire brigades are now responding to more than three lithium-ion battery fires each day, according to QBE.

QBE reported a 93% increase in lithium-ion battery fires between 2022 and 2024 based on Freedom of Information data collected in March 2025.

The insurance company recorded 1,330 lithium-ion battery fires in 2024, up from 690 in 2022.

London accounts for highest number of battery fires

London Fire Brigade responded to 407 lithium-ion battery fires in 2024, which QBE stated was more than four times the next highest region.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service reported 100 battery fires in the same year, while West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service recorded 94.

According to QBE, London also accounted for 49% of all e-bike fires nationally.

E-bike fires double over two-year period

QBE reported that electric bikes were linked to 362 fire incidents in 2024, doubling from 181 in 2022.

The insurer said e-bikes accounted for 27% of all lithium-ion battery fires in 2024.

Adrian Simmonds, practice leader for property risk solutions at QBE Insurance, said:
“Lithium-ion battery fires continue increasing at a worrying pace.

“These fires burn differently, they take longer to tackle, typically need ten times more water to put out and are often more harmful to the surrounding environment.

“People need to understand the risks and how to deal with them.”

Regulation and public awareness called for by QBE

QBE said more education is needed to ensure the public understands safe charging, use and disposal practices.

Simmonds added:
“While QBE supports the adoption of e-transport, we also call for stricter regulation.

“For instance, the UK should stop the sale of rogue e-bikes and other unregulated devices. This could be done in the Product Regulation and Metrology Bill, which is going through Parliament.

“In the meantime, consumers should purchase e-bikes and e-scooters from reputable companies, so retailers that show they take quality and compliance seriously with a genuine CE mark.

“Raising awareness around safe charging, use and disposal of lithium-ion batteries is critical to keeping people and property safe.”

Residential buildings most affected by battery fires

QBE stated that residential properties were the most common locations for lithium-ion battery fires.

Other frequently recorded settings were outdoor spaces and commercial buildings.

The insurer said fires involving electric scooters rose by 32% between 2022 and 2024, while electric mobility scooter fires rose by 20% during the same period.

Fires involving electric vehicles rose by 77%, reaching 232 incidents in 2024.

According to QBE, although the number of EVs has more than doubled since 2022, the fire risk remains high due to thermal runaway effects.
