Aberdeen safety hub opens as Arco expands training and offshore kit drops

Arco has opened a specialist centre in Aberdeen to support oil, gas and renewables sector companies working across onshore and offshore operations.

The£500,000 site is intended to help companies minimise risk and maximise productivity across demanding working environments.

The 13,700 sq ft centre is based near Aberdeen airport.

It offers safety training, face fit testing, respiratory servicing and product decoration services.

The centre also provides offshore kit drops, with orders placed before 3pm delivered the same day.

Each week, up to 100 kit bags are dispatched from the Aberdeen centre to the North Sea and beyond.

Energy and export focus

The launch follows Arco’s November announcement of a 37 per cent rise in pre-exception EBITDA to £11.4 million over the past year.

Alex Richards, Arco’s Energy and Export Director, said: “We’ve been keeping customers in Aberdeen safe for nearly 40 years, and this new centre signifies more than just a move to a new site.

“Our £500,000 centre enables access to Arco’s more than 140 years’ safety experience through best-in-class training, respiratory servicing, face fit testing, and same-day offshore kit drops.

“We supply highly certified PPE selected specifically to combat hazards faced offshore, onshore and across complex industrial environments.

“Our people are energy sector specialists, with deep understanding of industry regulations, working conditions and operational challenges.

“That knowledge allows us to provide informed guidance, the right solutions first time, and a level of service customers can rely on.

“By keeping people at the centre, and offering products dedicated to the energy industry, we’ve built long-standing partnerships that help protect workers, reduce risk and maximise productivity across Aberdeen’s energy community.”

The company said it is supporting workers across the globe from the Aberdeen centre, including Africa and the Middle East.

KNPC marks Kuwait firefighter graduations as fire training centre reaches 250 alumni

Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) held a ceremony to mark the graduation of a new batch of newly appointed firefighters working at the company and at Kuwait Integrated Petroleum Industries Company (KIPIC).

State news agency Kuna reported that the ceremony took place on Sunday at KNPC’s Main Support and Emergency Operations Center.

The number of graduates reached 65 firefighters.

The firefighters completed a training course accredited by the US National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

The ceremony was attended by Al-Ahmadi Governor Sheikh Homoud Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, KNPC Chief Executive Officer and Acting Chief Executive Officer of KIPIC Wadha Al-Khateeb.

Strengthening firefighting systems and training centre accreditation

KNPC Deputy Chief Executive Officer for Support Services Kholoud Al-Mutairi said: “Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) is keen to strengthen its firefighting system, in recognition of the vital role it plays.”

Al-Mutairi said enhancing the efficiency of firefighters is among the company’s top priorities through advanced training and qualification programmes.

She highlighted the Ahmadi Governor’s support in helping the company’s Fire Training Center obtain official accreditation from the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC).

Al-Mutairi added that the Fire Training Center has graduated five batches of firefighters since its establishment, totalling nearly 250 personnel.

She congratulated the graduates and said the course represents a fundamental step in their professional journey.

How Arcade UK uses apprenticeship to build in house engineering capability

Apprenticeship approach outlined by Arcade UK

Arcade UK has outlined how it uses apprenticeship routes to build workforce capability and support growth plans.

The Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) published an interview with Sam Williams, Project Director at Arcade UK, described as BESA’s National Contractor of the Year 2025 and part of its SEED Programme.

Williams said: “They are central to how we build the business for the long term.

“They are the heartbeat of our company, and we want our apprentices to become our leaders of tomorrow.”

The interview links apprenticeship investment to developing young engineers locally and responding to what Williams described as a skills issue in the industry.

Arcade UK described a delivery model that pairs an in-house lead engineer with an apprentice, with the aim of expanding in-house capability and reducing reliance on subcontractors.

Williams said: “They reduce over-reliance on subcontractors by building and expanding our in-house capability.

“We now use a model where we have an in-house lead engineer and an apprentice directly underneath.

“That supports profitability and resilience and shows us as a responsible employer who can help grow our team’s careers.”

How training partners and competency requirements shape delivery

BESA’s interview also set out how Arcade UK works with colleges and training providers and how it expects apprenticeship training to support future competency requirements.

Arcade UK said it works closely with Cambridgeshire Regional College to support apprenticeship routes, help identify courses, assist with candidates if needed and represent the company at careers fairs.

The interview describes early set-up as overwhelming and links progress to time spent finding responsive training partners.

Williams said: “Use the resources that already exist.

“We found providers through City and Guilds resources, and you can either start with the training package you need then find a college, or approach local colleges and ask what they are able to support.”

Arcade UK said it has apprentices across building services, electrical, air conditioning, service and maintenance, alongside routes linked to design engineering and project management.

The interview links apprenticeships to tighter competency requirements, including SKILLcards and task certification, and describes day-to-day impacts such as producing reports and documentation for management teams and customers.

Arcade UK said it is aiming for around 100 staff by 2030 and expects to employ 30 to 40 apprentices over the next three to four years.

The interview adds that current apprentices are expected to form part of a future senior management team and director group over the next 15 years.

London firefighters support Tunisia emergency training programme

Firefighters join Tunisia inter agency training programme

London Fire Brigade National Inter-Agency Liaison Officers (NILOs) have returned from Tunisia after a specialist training programme with the country’s National Office for Civil Protection (ONPC).

The Brigade said the work forms part of the UK-wide NILO Network managed by London Fire Brigade.

The training was designed to enhance skills for both organisations when responding to major incidents, including terrorist attacks.

Eight Tunisian Civil Protection strategic commanders took part.

Tunisia was selected following the 2015 terrorist beach attack at Port El Kantaoui in Sousse, which killed 38 people, most of them British tourists.

The programme followed on from a visit last November, described as successful in the source material.

What was covered during the joint training

The partnership is supported by the UK Government and is part of an ongoing programme to share expertise on operational challenges.

ONPC delegates shared insights into managing wildfires and described work with the Tunisian Ministry of Agriculture and the Forestry Commission to protect towns and rural communication during intense seasonal wildfires.

Tunisian officers discussed prevention, operational co-ordination and long-term resilience planning strategies.

They also shared lessons from the 2011 humanitarian crisis when up to 15,000 refugees a day crossed from Libya into Tunisia during the Arab Spring.

London Fire Brigade taught delegates about responding to complex inner-city incidents and the challenges of tackling high-rise residential fires with multi-agency co-ordination involving large scale urban evacuations.

Shaun Coltress, Deputy Assistant Commissioner working in Operational Resilience, said: “As one of the world’s busiest fire and rescue services, we have extensive experience managing complex incidents in London.

“This partnership is built on genuine collaboration.

“Both teams bring extensive professional experience and learning to the table, which is central to why this partnership is so valuable.

“Whenever there’s a major incident, such as the recent train crashes in Spain, the impact is felt globally.

“By sharing knowledge openly, we strengthen the ability of both services to protect the public, whether that’s in London, Tunisia, or anywhere our citizens’ travel.”

The visit forms part of the UK Government’s Joint Overseas Protect & Prepare Programme.

IFE sets out Apprenticeship Week plans plus Edinburgh graduate lecture details

The Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) has set out plans to support National Apprenticeship Week by spotlighting apprentices and promoting sector resources.

In a statement, the IFE said it will use the week to raise awareness of opportunities in the fire sector and share apprentice experiences, including how IFE Student membership has supported development.

The IFE said each day will focus on a different resource, including CPD, events, networking opportunities and a pathway to professional registration.

The organisation said 2026 is the third year it has celebrated apprenticeships.

Ellie Leadon, IFE Student member and a Design Engineer at BB7, said: “An apprenticeship offered the best of both worlds – the chance to gain practical experience while continuing my studies and earning throughout the programme.

“The combination of working on live projects, learning directly from experienced peers, developing both technical and personal skills, and gaining direct insight into the fire engineering industry made an apprenticeship the ideal route for me to gain experience and prepare for a long-term career. “

Events announced alongside the campaign

The IFE has also announced the return of its Graduate Lecture event, scheduled for 13 May at Edinburgh University.

The organisation said the day will showcase research from graduates and include networking opportunities for students to meet employers from across the sector.

IFE CEO Steve Hamm commented: “The IFE is proud to take part in this annual campaign and celebrate up and coming talent.

“As a professional body, it is paramount that we advocate for diversity and support individuals in their professional development.

“The modern apprenticeship pathway not only ensures a more dynamic and inclusive workforce but actively encourages individuals from diverse backgrounds and experiences to contribute to the fire sector.”

The IFE also said its Elevate webinar series will continue as a free resource for early career professionals covering topics from across the sector.

SFJ Awards opens consultation on fire safety training suite

Fire safety training qualifications consultation opens

A stakeholder consultation has launched to support a review of the fire safety suite of qualifications that form the basis of fire safety training for fire safety regulators.

SFJ Awards said the consultation follows an initial review phase led by SFJ Awards in collaboration with the Home Office, the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC), the London Fire Brigade and others.

The suite includes a Level 3 Certificate, a Level 4 Certificate and a Level 4 Diploma.

The initial phase updated the qualifications’ content.

What the review covers and why input is being sought

The consultation aims to capture views from a wider pool of experts and practitioners as the review process is finalised.

Adreena Parkin-Coates of the NFCC was part of the expert working group that carried out the initial phase of the review.

Parkin-Coates said: “Fire safety roles are central to minimising and mitigating the risk of harm to people, property and the environment from fire.

“Ensuring the workforce is fully prepared for the rigours and challenges of the role requires a robust set of qualifications suitable for all different learners.

“The suite was reviewed in its entirety to promote consistent regulation and fire safety standards across fire and rescue services and reduce content duplication for learners.

“Following this initial evaluation, we now invite input from a wider group of stakeholders as we finalise the review process.”

David Higham, Managing Director at SFJ Awards, said: “The fire safety suite of qualifications offers a structured development pathway for fire safety regulators, providing a platform for developing the dedicated workforce to keep people, property and the environment safe from fire.

“The Level 3 Certificate in Fire Safety and the Level 4 Certificate and Diploma in Fire Safety have each been reviewed by the expert working group to ensure alignment with current best practices and now the consultation stage seeks the views of stakeholders to ensure that practical considerations are fully accounted for.

“Following the Grenfell Tower fire disaster in 2017, it is widely recognised that qualifications which support the training and development of fire safety personnel must be fit for purpose and I encourage stakeholders to submit their valued representations.”

The consultation covering the Level 3 Certificate in Fire Safety, the Level 4 Certificate in Fire Safety and the Level 4 Diploma in Fire Safety is now live.

Over the past year, what have been the main milestones for WEBER RESCUE SYSTEMS in the region?

Across the past year, a lot of our regional work has followed the same theme: fire brigades and civil defence want equipment that performs reliably on scene, and they want better visibility of how that equipment is performing day to day.

That is why our SMART-FORCE direction has been so relevant here.

It speaks to efficiency, safety and precision, while also giving crews and supervisors clearer, real-time information about tool status and battery condition during rescue work.

We have also been expanding the range with compact tooling aimed at the kinds of access constraints crews face in real extrications.

At the same time, interest in training has grown, including hands-on delivery, online learning and structured professional development.

In short, equipment capability, fleet management and skills development are now being discussed together more often than they were even a few years ago.

At Intersec, what are the headline updates you are bringing and how do they build on your existing systems?

Our focus is continuing to develop SMART-FORCE as a connected rescue tool platform, then showing how that translates into practical capability on the incident ground.

The aim is familiar performance for crews, supported by better oversight for managers who need to plan readiness, maintenance and long-term investment.

On the equipment side, we are highlighting a compact cutter option designed for confined spaces, where tool positioning decides what is achievable.

We are also presenting a specialist cutter designed for linear, progressive cutting, aimed at scenarios involving mass transport such as buses and trains.

The practical example we use is creating an additional access opening, sometimes described as a “third door”, so teams can create controlled entry or egress when normal doors are blocked or compromised.

How are digital and networked technologies changing rescue operations and equipment management on scene?

Digital capability changes what crews can see and trust during an incident.

When teams have real-time indicators on tool condition and battery readiness, it supports quicker decisions and smoother deployment, especially when multiple tools are being used under time pressure.

It also reduces guesswork for crews rotating in and out of tasks.

The change continues after the incident.

Agencies increasingly want to manage rescue tools as a fleet, with clearer oversight of where equipment is, how it is being used and what needs servicing.

In the region, that fleet-level visibility is becoming part of the expectation, particularly for civil defence organisations that run large inventories across multiple stations.

In practical terms, what do these digital tools add for teams working under pressure?

The most immediate benefit is clarity.

Crews gain a clearer view of tool status and readiness, and that supports confident action in moments where time and accuracy matter.

It also helps supervisors and officers understand what is happening across a scene when equipment is moving between teams, vehicles and locations.

There are practical advantages in control and accountability as well.

Tools are high-value assets, and during complex incidents they can be left behind, moved unintentionally or taken.

Features that support location awareness, equipment locking and diagnostics help organisations retain control of their inventory and speed up recovery after a response.

The same data supports a smarter approach to maintenance and budgeting, because service needs become easier to anticipate and schedule.

Over time, that translates into fewer surprises, fewer preventable failures and more consistent equipment availability across the fleet.

How do you deliver training and professional development with fire and civil defence agencies in the Middle East?

We build training around realistic practice and continuity.

That usually starts with hands-on delivery, including demonstrations, practical seminars and scenario-based sessions delivered with local partners, so the content fits the vehicles, procedures and challenges agencies face in their own operating environment.

Teams need space to practise technique, build confidence and develop consistency across crews.

Online learning is also playing a bigger role, especially when agencies want standardised learning across large workforces.

E-learning and immersive formats such as augmented reality and virtual reality help teams rehearse decision-making and extrication steps without depending on a physical training vehicle every time.

We also encourage engagement with rescueDAYS, because it is an intensive training environment that brings instructors, scenarios and peer learning into one place.

Alongside that, we are developing our academy capability so agencies can access structured learning as part of a wider, longer-term relationship.

Which recent programmes have shaped your view of what skills agencies are prioritising?

Recent activity has highlighted how quickly rescue requirements are shifting.

There has been strong demand for training linked to electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles and hydrogen, because agencies want practical guidance on risk, tactics and safe working methods as these vehicles become more common.

Train rescue scenarios have also been a recurring theme, and teams are looking for equipment and training that match that operational reality.

Delegations from the Gulf Cooperation Council have been part of this, including teams linked to Dubai Police, civil defence in Abu Dhabi, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

We have seen appetite for intensive training participation and for structured learning pathways that keep skills current.

Maintenance and service training has been a major part of that discussion too.

Agencies want equipment that lasts for years and performs reliably, and that depends on first-level servicing knowledge, routine checks and disciplined maintenance habits.

Looking ahead, how will digitalisation, operational trends and partner expectations shape WEBER RESCUE SYSTEMS’ next phase?

Digitalisation will continue to move into the baseline expectation, both for crews on scene and for managers planning readiness, budgets and maintenance across fleets.

At the same time, operational trends will keep changing the training requirement, especially as vehicle technology evolves and agencies face a wider spread of rescue scenarios.

That creates pressure for learning that is repeatable, current and practical, and for systems that support consistent use across large teams.

For us, that connects directly to our plans for continued portfolio development and to the way we use major events such as Intersec and INTERSCHUTZ as points to present the next stages of that development.

It also links to the collaboration and knowledge transfer work we are trying to build across the Middle East, particularly within the Gulf Cooperation Council.

Finally, we are aiming to expand our reach through structured cooperation models in more countries, with trainer development and academy support that keeps partners updated as tools, risks and operational demands continue to evolve.

Tailored training systems supporting brigades: FireGo’s answer to aircraft, tunnel and EV fire risks

Jochen Schuergers, General Manager at FireGo, explains how modular live training systems support brigades across vehicles, tunnels, structures and hazardous materials

Fire brigades have long relied on one command that brings an operation to life: “Water ON!” At Fire Go GmbH, we design our training systems to prepare firefighters for that moment in a controlled and repeatable environment.

Our role is to support the safe practice of live fire skills.

When we complete maintenance or deliver a new facility, our internal signal of readiness is the same each time: “Fire GO!”

We specialise in gas fired and solid fuel fired fire simulation systems that support training centres in many different operational settings.

Our work covers design, planning and production, along with the long term service and maintenance needed to keep complex systems running.

This includes inspections, repairs, technical upgrades and extensions carried out by qualified technicians.

All control software is developed in-house so that every installation can follow the customer’s training approach.

Since our foundation, we have grown steadily and supported an increasing number of fire brigades in Germany and abroad.

From the beginning, our aim has been to create training environments that reflect real operational demands.

Fire training systems allow firefighters to work with real heat, real flame behaviour and real smoke conditions.

These elements help firefighters develop skills that cannot be gained through theory alone.

Live fire practice supports situational awareness, improves coordination and strengthens confidence during real incidents.

Fire Go was founded in August 2016 by a small team with specialist experience in fire training technology.

As demand increased, we moved to larger premises in 2018.

Today, Fire Go operates as a medium sized organisation with a team whose individual experience extends up to 30 years in this field.

This knowledge influences every installation we build, from compact units to large multi-module structures.

We supply fire training systems in many forms.

Some are designed for regular use at regional fire brigades.

Others are built for specialised locations such as airports, industrial facilities or tunnel authorities.

Our guiding principle remains consistent.

We can recreate anything that can burn in real life.

Aircraft fire training systems

Aviation incidents demand careful preparation, and we develop systems that allow these scenarios to be trained safely.

Our Mobile Aircraft Fire Trainer is constructed from ten container based modules that recreate the outline and dimensions of an Airbus A320 or a Boeing B737.

The assembled structure is around 40 metres long with a height of ten metres and a wingspan of roughly 20 metres.

Inside and around the aircraft, firefighters can work with 28 controllable fireplaces along with a fuel spill area of approximately 120 square metres.

These points allow the practice of cabin and cockpit fires, undercarriage incidents and fuel-fed external scenarios.

The modules can be assembled, dismantled and transported within a single day.

This flexibility is suited to airports and training centres that require high intensity training without keeping a permanent full-scale aircraft onsite.

Training for new vehicle risks

Changes in vehicle technology have altered the nature of emergency response.

Electric vehicles behave differently in fire conditions, and our Electric Car Fire Trainer E H2 is designed to support practical training for these incidents.

It can simulate thermal runaway within a battery module.

It can generate white or black smoke.

It can reproduce fire in the engine bay, passenger compartment or boot.

Hydrogen powered vehicles present their own challenges.

The trainer includes a hydrogen fire feature in which the flame is invisible to the naked eye.

A thermal imaging camera is needed to identify it, which helps firefighters recognise how these fires behave and how they can be approached safely.

Tunnel environments and restricted access

Tunnel operations require training in controlled but realistic surroundings.

To support this, we build tunnel fire trainers that allow responders to work with long enclosed spaces and limited access routes.

In our tunnel systems, structures such as a truck tractor, a flatbed truck and a passenger car can be fixed at set points along the tunnel.

Each mock-up contains fireplaces that can be activated independently or in sequence.

Heat protection panels enclose the fire areas to protect the tunnel walls and the technical systems behind them.

These environments are used to practise navigation, hose handling, breathing protection, rescue techniques and coordinated extinguishment.

Mobile training facilities

Many customers need the option to train across several locations.

Our trailer based fire training units were developed for this purpose.

Each unit is built on a semi-trailer with a fixed steel structure, creating a fully usable training space that can be transported as needed.

A hydraulically extendable side section increases the interior volume by roughly 40 percent.

The roof can also be adjusted hydraulically to create additional training opportunities and access points.

The fireplaces installed inside each trailer follow the training concept requested by the customer, which helps brigades tailor exercises to their region or operational profile.

Customised structural fire trainers

Some brigades require training environments that reflect the buildings they encounter most often.

We design structural fire trainers that can include residential layouts, industrial spaces or commercial areas.

Any combination of fireplaces can be integrated.

This approach supports detailed scenario based exercises and allows instructors to guide firefighters through settings that resemble their local built environment.

Training for public fire safety

We also develop systems for organisations that teach civil fire safety.

The Hand Extinguisher Fire Trainer FLT10 is widely used by fire safety officers who train employees, students or other building users in the proper use of handheld extinguishers.

The unit provides safe, repeatable live fire demonstrations suitable for introductory courses.

Specialist systems for aviation and hazardous materials

For emergency services operating in aviation settings, we produce a Helicopter Fire Trainer equipped with fireplaces in the engine area and cockpit, along with an external fuel spill simulation.

A stretcher in the rear section allows practical rescue training through the rear doors.

For hazardous materials response, we supply a tank wagon trainer.

It includes simulated leaks on the tank body, pipework and valves.

Additional fireplaces can be added according to the training plan.

The version described includes a flange fire and a dome shaft fire.

Alongside this, the mobile fuel spill fire trainer can be produced in sizes from one square metre to one hundred square metres to support realistic spill scenarios.

Fire risk assessment qualifications launched by FPA with FireQual accreditation

Fire risk assessment qualifications aligned to BS 8674

The Fire Protection Association (FPA) has been approved by FireQual to deliver fire risk assessment qualifications aligned to BS 8674:2025, with the announcement dated 21 January 2026.

The FPA said the qualifications are designed to meet the competency levels set out in BS 8674:2025.

The suite includes a Level 3 Certificate in Foundation Fire Risk Assessment and a Level 4 Certificate in Intermediate Fire Risk Assessment, with course dates available now.

It also includes a Level 5 Certificate in Advanced Fire Risk Assessment, with course dates described as coming soon.

Delivery options and supporting content

The FPA said its training will focus on the core competencies in BS 8674 and will cover interpreting fire safety plans and fire risk assessment action plans.

The training is also intended to support decisions on when specialist advice is needed, including technical input for assessing external walls using PAS 9980 guidance.

“By aligning with BS 8674:2025, we are equipping fire risk assessors with the latest best practice and technical expertise, enabling them to further demonstrate competency to Duty Holders and Responsible Persons.

“We are in the process of creating a bridging course for existing learners, helping them close knowledge gaps, gain the equivalent FireQual qualification, and progress to the higher-level qualifications offered by the FPA.”

Learners can complete the qualifications at the FPA’s Training and Education Centre in Oxfordshire, online, or on-site at client premises.

The FPA also referenced a webinar recorded in November 2025 on the BS 8674:2025 competency framework and how the new qualifications map to its levels.
