NEBOSH Verified offers expert verification of the quality and impact of health and safety programmes.

Only a select number of courses will be verified at any given time to uphold the board’s globally respected standards.

This approach ensures each programme undergoes a robust review process to meet benchmarks for excellence in health and safety training.

International and UK organisations achieve first NEBOSH Verified status

Arabian Pipeline & Services Co. Ltd. ANABEEB is the first international organisation to have a course verified through the new service.

The Saudi-based industrial services and maintenance company serves process industry clients across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

ANABEEB Chief Executive Officer, Raed Alghamdi said: “We extend our sincere appreciation for the announcement of the collaboration between Anabeeb and NEBOSH.

“This collaboration is a step forward, highlighting a shared, strong commitment to Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) excellence.”

Phoenix Health and Safety is the first UK organisation to receive the verification.

The company is a NEBOSH Gold Learning Partner and provider of health and safety qualifications.

Operations Director, Richard Bath said: “Having worked closely with NEBOSH for many years, we recognise the rigorous quality standards, global credibility, and trusted governance that underpin their qualifications.

“Aligning our course with NEBOSH ensures it is delivered with the academic rigour, practical relevance, and international recognition needed to support organisations and safety professionals as they integrate AI safely and responsibly into their OSH practices.”

FPA becomes FireQual Approved Training Centre for BS 8674:2025 qualifications

The Fire Protection Association (FPA) has announced a partnership with FireQual to deliver fire risk assessment qualifications aligned with BS 8674:2025.

The organisation has been approved as a FireQual Approved Training Centre and will offer a full suite of FireQual-accredited qualifications from January 2026.

The suite aligns with the competency levels set out in BS 8674:2025.

The qualifications available include a Level 3 Certificate in Foundation Fire Risk Assessment and a Level 4 Certificate in Intermediate Fire Risk Assessment, with course dates currently available.

A Level 5 Certificate in Advanced Fire Risk Assessment is also included, with course dates to follow.

What the qualifications cover and how they are delivered

The qualifications introduce an enhanced focus on the core competencies detailed within BS 8674.

Training is designed to equip learners to interpret fire safety plans and fire risk assessment action plans.

The framework also enables assessments that identify when additional specialist advice is required, including securing technical knowledge to assess external walls using the guidance contained within PAS 9980.

Learners are also enabled to evaluate the suitability of fire safety features within buildings and maintain awareness of current best practice techniques and required technical expertise.

Hytera presented its Integrated Command & Control (ICC) Platform and Body Camera Systems alongside NAFFCO’s specialised emergency vehicles.

The joint display was described as showing how integrated communication and vehicle systems can enhance situational awareness, streamline command and support coordinated operations in different scenarios.

The statement said the joint exhibition received a visit from H.E. Mohamed Hamad Al Kuwaiti, Chairman of the U.A.E. Cybersecurity Council.

National Training Academy launched for fire-stopping training at ROCKWOOL UK site

ROCKWOOL UK has launched a national Training Academy for construction and building safety professionals at its West Midlands global centre of excellence for fire-stopping.

The company said the purpose-built Academy will deliver best practice learning and practical, hands-on training around the use and application of its products for construction professionals, including specifiers, installers and fire engineers, as well as estate managers from the public and private sectors.

Fire-stopping courses are due to begin in January, with further topics being added through 2026.

The facility is described as providing expert-led practical sessions alongside specification and installation guidance aimed at supporting building performance, compliance and safety.

The one-day fire-stopping course has been designed so it can be delivered to meet the attendee’s level of experience, whether they are a novice, intermediate or advanced professional.

It plays a vital role in the universe, in industries on Earth, and increasingly in clean energy solutions. 

From rocket fuel to potential uses in powering vehicles and homes, hydrogen is a substance with enormous potential. 

Yet, with all its advantages, there are also concerns, such as ‘is hydrogen flammable’, and around how it behaves in different conditions. 

Understanding hydrogen’s properties is key to using it safely and effectively. 

What is Hydrogen?

Hydrogen is the simplest and lightest chemical element, with each atom containing just one proton. 

It is by far the most abundant element in the universe and is found on Earth mostly in compounds. 

Under normal conditions, pure hydrogen exists as a gas composed of two-atom molecules (H₂). 

It is a colourless, odourless, and non-toxic gas, which means humans cannot detect it by smell or sight. 

In industry, hydrogen has been produced and used safely for decades in large quantities, and it has long been used as a rocket fuel. 

Today, hydrogen is also being explored as a clean energy carrier for vehicles and power generation, since burning hydrogen does not produce carbon emissions.

Is Hydrogen Flammable?

Yes. 

Hydrogen is a highly flammable substance. 

Hydrogen will combust if it is mixed with oxygen and exposed to an ignition source. 

Hydrogen ignites more readily and over a wider range of conditions than many other fuels. 

Hydrogen can catch fire when as little as about 4% of the air is hydrogen. 

This flammability range (4–75% in air) is much broader than that of most hydrocarbons. 

Moreover, it takes very little energy to set hydrogen gas on fire. 

Even a tiny spark of static electricity is enough to ignite a hydrogen–air mixture. 

This means hydrogen gas can be ignited very easily by a small spark or hot surface. 

Once ignited, it burns quickly and releases a large amount of heat, which makes it a powerful fuel but also means any ignition must be prevented through careful handling.

Why is Hydrogen so Flammable?

Hydrogen’s high flammability comes from both its chemistry and its ignition properties. 

Chemically, hydrogen fuel reacts very easily with oxygen, releasing a lot of energy in the form of heat when it forms water.

Once a hydrogen fire starts, it can sustain itself and spread rapidly because of this energy release.

Low Ignition Energy and Broad Flammability Range

Physically, hydrogen is easier to ignite than most fuels. 

Only a very small amount of energy is needed to ignite hydrogen gas – on the order of 0.02 millijoules for an optimal hydrogen–air mix. 

Such a low ignition threshold means even a tiny static spark or minor heat source can set off hydrogen. 

Moreover, hydrogen can burn across a very broad range of concentrations. 

Heat Intensity and the Need for Oxygen

Hydrogen flames burn extremely hot (roughly 2,000°C in air), which contributes to the rapid release of energy once ignited. 

All these factors explain why hydrogen ignites so readily and burns so vigorously. 

However, it is important to note that hydrogen on its own will not burn unless an oxidiser (like oxygen in air) is present. 

For example, hydrogen stored in a tank cannot ignite by itself.

It needs to leak out and mix with air before combustion can occur.

Why is Hydrogen Used if it is Flammable

If hydrogen can be risky, why do people still use it? 

The answer is that virtually all fuels are flammable.

We use flammable substances all the time, such as petrol, diesel, or natural gas, because they provide useful energy. 

Hydrogen is no different in that regard. 

It is not inherently more dangerous than other common fuels, and in some respects it behaves more safely in open environments. 

With proper precautions, hydrogen can be handled as safely as petrol or other fuels. 

Industry has, in fact, used hydrogen for many decades in large volumes (for instance, in refining and in rocket propulsion) with a strong safety record.

Advantages of Using Hydrogen as a Fuel

We choose to use hydrogen because it offers significant benefits as a fuel and industrial chemical. 

One major advantage is its energy content: hydrogen contains more energy per unit weight than any other common fuel, about three times the energy of petrol by weight. 

This high energy density (by weight) makes hydrogen very powerful.

It’s one reason hydrogen is used as rocket fuel. 

Another advantage is that burning hydrogen produces no carbon dioxide or soot. 

The only by-product of hydrogen combustion is water, so using hydrogen as a fuel can eliminate tailpipe emissions of greenhouse gases and pollutants. 

This clean aspect of hydrogen is very attractive for fighting air pollution and climate change. 

How to Stay Safe When Using Hydrogen

Working safely with hydrogen requires strict adherence to guidelines. Important safety practices include:

Prevent Leaks

Use proper system design, quality components, and regular maintenance to avoid hydrogen leaks. 

Preventing hydrogen from unintentionally escaping is the first and most important step in hydrogen safety.

Provide Ventilation

Any area where hydrogen is stored or used should be well-ventilated. 

Good ventilation will disperse any leaked hydrogen and dilute it below the flammable concentration.

Eliminate Ignition Sources

Keep open flames, sparks, or hot objects away from hydrogen. 

This includes banning smoking and using only spark-proof tools or electronics in hydrogen areas. 

Even static electricity should be controlled by grounding equipment, since hydrogen can be ignited by a tiny spark.

Use Proper Storage

Store hydrogen in approved containers or cylinders equipped with pressure-relief devices. 

These safety valves will release gas if pressure builds up too high, preventing tank ruptures. 

Cylinders should be kept in cool, well-ventilated places.

Install Leak Detectors

Because hydrogen gas has no smell and burns with an almost invisible flame, electronic hydrogen detectors and alarm systems are essential. 

Sensors can alert users to a leak long before it reaches dangerous levels, and specialised flame detectors can help detect hydrogen fires.

Training and Procedures

Anyone handling hydrogen should have training in its properties and emergency procedures. 

Follow all applicable hydrogen safety standards and codes. 

Have clear protocols for how to respond to a suspected hydrogen leak or fire. 

Proper education and planning can make hydrogen as safe to work with as any other fuel.

Hydrogen Flammability Compared to Other Gases

When comparing hydrogen to other fuels like methane (natural gas), propane, or petrol vapour, we find that hydrogen is easier to ignite and burn over a wider range of conditions. 

Hydrogen can burn in air at concentrations from about 4% up to 75%. 

By contrast, methane ignites only between roughly 5% and 15% in air, and petrol (gasoline) vapour between about 1.4% and 7.6%. 

This means hydrogen can catch fire in mixtures that are too lean or too rich for other fuels to burn. 

Hydrogen also requires a much smaller spark to ignite. 

The minimum ignition energy for a hydrogen–air mixture is around 0.02 mJ, whereas methane or petrol vapour need on the order of 0.2–0.3 mJ to ignite. 

A tiny static spark that would ignite hydrogen might not be enough to ignite the other fuels.

Gas Dispersion and Accumulation Differences

Another key difference is how these gases behave when released. 

Hydrogen is far lighter than air (about 14 times lighter), so it rises and disperses quickly. 

If hydrogen leaks outdoors, it will rapidly float up and dilute, making it less likely to accumulate and cause a fire or explosion. 

Methane is also lighter than air (though not as much as hydrogen).

Propane and petrol fumes are heavier than air, so they tend to sink and collect near the ground, which can create a lingering flammable cloud. 

This means a propane leak in a poorly ventilated area can be more dangerous in terms of explosion risk, since the gas can pool in one place, while a hydrogen leak would probably disperse upward.

Flame Characteristics and Heat Radiation

Hydrogen fires have some different characteristics. 

A hydrogen flame is pale blue and almost invisible in daylight, and it radiates less heat than a hydrocarbon fire. 

This lower radiant heat means a hydrogen flame is less likely to ignite nearby materials from a distance. 

By contrast, burning natural gas or petrol produces more visible, yellow-orange flames and a lot of radiant heat (and smoke in the case of petrol). 

The downside is that a hydrogen flame can be hard to see, so detectors are important, but the upside is it doesn’t throw off as much heat to its surroundings.

SFJ Awards said the qualifications support the application of legislation and risk-based methods across a range of premises.

The organisation said the routes are intended to enable learners to produce clear findings and recommendations as part of the fire risk assessment process.

David Higham, Managing Director at SFJ Awards, commented: “Delivering improved standards in fire risk assessments relies upon having the learning architecture in place to support learners to acquire the requisite knowledge and apply it practically in the field.

“Bringing these new qualifications to market is a key step forward in supporting this aim and enabling alignment with BS 8674:2025.

“The introduction of the Level 4 Certificate and Level 4 Diploma offers two qualification routes to provide flexibility for learners and support greater coverage across the sector – as is needed – to drive up safety standards overall.”

Availability and progression routes in the UK

SFJ Awards said the Level 4 Certificate and Level 4 Diploma in Fire Risk Assessment are now available for delivery at training centres across the UK.

The organisation said the routes support progression through supervised practice, workplace experience and ongoing continuing professional development (CPD).

Chris Wilson, Managing Director at The Fire Safety Academy, said: “BS 8674:2025 is an important step forward for assessing and mitigating fire risk in residential complexes, tall buildings, and business and mixed-use premises across the UK.

“The qualifications therefore provide a vital bridge between the new safety standards and learners and practitioners responsible for conducting fire risk assessments.”

SFJ Awards said Level 5 Certificate and Diploma in Fire Risk Assessment qualifications are also in development.

The organisation said these are intended to support progression to the advanced Fire Risk Assessor competencies set out in BS 8674:2025.

NVFC announces session line-up for 2026 Training Summit in Virginia

NVFC Training Summit dates and location confirmed

The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) has announced the session line-up for its 2026 NVFC Training Summit, scheduled for 26 to 27 June 2026 in Arlington, VA.

The organisation said the event will feature three learning tracks focused on responder health and safety, volunteer recruitment and retention and emergency service leadership.

It added that registration will open in January.

The line-up of sessions and instructors is now available.

NVFC track structure and session count

NVFC said attendees will be able to choose from 18 sessions.

The organisation said the sessions will be taught by nationally recognised subject matter experts and fire service leaders.

It added that the programme is split across three tracks.

Those tracks are Health and Safety, Leadership and Recruitment and Retention.

Health and Safety track sessions listed

NVFC listed six Health and Safety sessions for the 2026 NVFC Training Summit.

The sessions are The Power of Hope: Strengthening Resilience and Well-Being in First Responders, Response Time Matters in Early Cancer Detection and Developing a NFPA/OSHA Compliant Fire Department Training Program.

NVFC also listed Using AI to Enhance Educational Messages and Outreach, Red Lights, Blue Lights, Gun Fights: Tactics for Violent Calls and Realistic Training for Brush Fire Response.

The instructors named for those sessions are Wendy Norris, Sandy Danault, Douglas Cline, E. Brene Ball, Dane Yaw and Jeremy Keller.

Leadership track sessions cover funding and culture

NVFC listed six sessions within its Leadership track.

The course titles include Money Matters: Grants and Growth for Departments and Holding the Line: First In Leadership for Safer Roadway Incidents.

NVFC also listed Going Combination and Preserving Your Volunteers and Building a Culture of Excellence, Teamwork and Camaraderie.

The remaining Leadership sessions are High Performance Leadership in Emergency Services: A Chief’s Olympic Perspective and Iron Sharpens Iron: Building Stronger Fire Service Leaders.

The instructors named for the Leadership track are Dan Kramer, Todd Leiss, Joseph Maruca, Thomas Merrill, Jason Read and Al Yancey.

Recruitment and Retention track focuses on people and messaging

NVFC said the Recruitment and Retention track also includes six sessions.

The organisation listed Successful Volunteer Retention and Recruitment in the Fire Service and Igniting Purpose: Encouraging Women to Explore the Fire Service.

NVFC also named Is Your Department a Place You Would Join and Managing People, Not Just Fires: HR in Volunteer Service.

The remaining sessions in the track are Are You Telling Your Story Effectively? Marketing for Fire Departments and Finding the Why: Passion-Driven Recruitment for Fire and EMS Volunteers.

The instructors named are Dr. Candice McDonald, Jen Elleraas, Lee Price, Pamela Rogers, Kimberly Hilsenbeck and Walter Campbell.
