Northumbrian Water Group selects Blackline Safety for worker protection

Northumbrian Water Group (NWG) has chosen Blackline Safety’s connected safety technology to enhance worker protection at two of its water treatment sites in the UK.

The company, which supplies water and wastewater treatment services to nearly five million people across northeast and southeast England, is the eighth UK water company to implement Blackline’s safety devices.

Blackline’s cloud-connected G7c personal gas wearable and EXO area monitor will be used to consolidate gas detection, communication, and lone worker connectivity into a single system.

Safety concerns drive adoption of connected safety devices

NWG’s decision to invest in Blackline Safety technology follows industry-wide concerns about worker exposure to hazardous gases, contaminated water, combustible gas explosions, and the risks associated with lone work and confined space entry.

A fatal explosion at another UK water company’s treatment plant, where four workers lost their lives, also influenced the decision to enhance safety measures.

Dan Woodward, Process Safety Business Partner at NWG, said: “Feedback we were getting from the team on-site was that they just want to do their jobs but had too many devices, apps and things to think about, and anything we could do to simplify the process would be beneficial for everyone.”

Limitations of previous safety equipment

NWG had previously relied on portable gas monitors, mobile phones, and walkie-talkies for gas detection and communication. However, these methods had limitations, including cross-sensitivity issues leading to faulty gas readings, downtime due to off-site calibrations, and ignition risks from mobile phones in biogas-rich areas.

By integrating Blackline’s technology, NWG can now monitor high-risk areas remotely and ensure real-time communication while reducing the number of devices workers need to carry.

Early benefits of Blackline’s safety system

NWG has already identified previously undetected hazards using the new system. The EXO monitor recently detected gas levels reaching 75% of the explosive limit, triggering an immediate ‘stop work’ order and evacuation.

Additionally, the G7 wearables have helped improve worker communication and safety, with push-to-talk functionality enabling walkie-talkie-style communication. The devices also remain operational in underground environments where mobile signals are weak.

Blackline Safety Europe’s carbon neutrality verification

Blackline Safety has announced that its European operations have been independently verified as carbon neutral for all measured emissions during the previous fiscal year, as reported by Blackline Safety.

Certification organisation NQA was responsible for the verification against the internationally recognised standard for carbon neutrality, PAS 2060.

Blackline Safety, headquartered in Canada with offices in the UK, France, U.S., and UAE, manufactures and provides monitoring services for its connected safety wearable and area gas monitors, used by more than 2,200 organisations and protecting over 165,000 workers worldwide.

Carbon neutrality initiative

Lacey Griffin, Blackline Safety’s Quality & Compliance Co-ordinator for UK & Europe, said: “The company began the journey to carbon neutrality across our global business as part of our commitment to Environmental, Social and Governance initiatives, which have been evidenced in our annual ESG report since 2020.”

Last year, Blackline Safety Europe announced the results of its first-ever Carbon Footprint report, commissioned to track both direct and indirect carbon emissions and conducted with carbon consultants Auditel.

Griffin added: “As a result of the report and subsequent emissions reduction plan for each site, we have successfully achieved our goal and verified our status.”

Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol

Blackline Safety Europe’s carbon footprint was calculated in line with the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol emission scopes.

This includes direct emissions from the combustion of gas and other fuels, emissions from the generation of purchased electricity and other energy, and emissions by third parties in connection with operational activities.

The company is now working towards gaining the new ISO 14068 Climate Change Management Standard.

Griffin explained: “Blackline Safety understands the importance of protecting the communities in which we operate and the world as a whole, and will continue to play our part in protecting the environment and providing a sustainable future for the generations to come.”

Electric vehicle fires: Managing a new risk for hazmat teams with Blackline Safety

As electric vehicles (EVs) become increasingly popular in urban transportation—including e-bikes and e-scooters—the risk of EV battery fires poses new challenges for first responders. These fires can be difficult to extinguish and may emit hazardous gases, necessitating specialized equipment and strategies for effective management. 

In responding to EV battery fires, connected multi-gas detectors have emerged as a game-changer. These devices leverage cloud-connectivity, location technology, customizable gas cartridges, and advanced analytics. The result is enhanced situational awareness, improved response times, and comprehensive gas detection to get ahead of risk and prevent EV fires from escalating.

Usage of EVs continues to grow exponentially. So do the risks to first responders.

Unexpected, long-lasting hazardous off-gases

EVs batteries, primarily lithium-ion, can catch fire and produce gases such as hydrogen fluoride (HF), which are not normally encountered during combustion engine fires. Once a lithium-ion battery catches fire, it can be difficult to extinguish and can continue burning, generating hazardous off gases for several hours. It can even reignite after being put out.

Responding to EV battery fires requires connected gas detection equipment to ensure the safety of both responders and communities. Traditional gas detectors may not be sufficient for detecting the unique hazards associated with EV fires, emphasizing the need for advanced sensors such as lower-explosive-limit molecular property spectrometers (LEL-MPS), HF sensors, oxygen (O2) sensors, and carbon monoxide (CO) sensors.

“This is a new hazard not seen in the industry to date and fire hazmat teams right now run the risk of not having the right gas detection equipment to properly protect them,” said Travis Rebello, Firefighter / HazMat Technician

“Knowing what gases are present allows us to make quick decisions that put their safety—and the safety of communities—first.”

Early detection critical

In EVs, where the presence of volatile, potential ignition substances such as fuel or battery electrolytes can escalate a fire incident. Gas detectors with LEL-MPS sensors can provide early warnings by detecting flammable gases, like hydrogen and methane, and trigger an alarm, allowing responders to take immediate action to prevent further escalation. CO is also generated during heating and fire, providing pre-warning of a potential thermal runaway (i.e. when an incident occurs where one exothermal process triggers other processes, finally resulting in an uncontrollable increase in temperature).

Proactively monitor risk

If an EV battery is at risk of thermal runaway, it needs to be transported to a storage location or facility where gas levels can be continuously monitored to ensure they remain within a safe threshold. Connected area monitors are ideal for this situation. They can be set up where the batteries are being stored and then gas levels can be continuously monitored from any remote location via an online dashboard. If gas levels rise above a set threshold, alarm notifications will be sent so that a response team can quell the situation before a fire occurs. And with a 100+ day battery life the portable area monitor can ensure the safety of the batteries’ storage for an extended period.

“Equipment that can detect precursor gases from battery failures is critical to being proactive in reducing the impact of EV fires,” said Bobby Salvesen, co-host of The Haz Mat Guys Podcast.

“Having the ability to directly measure potential gases present will allow members to know whether a situation is in the process of runaway or propagation or not.”

Managing the response

As an EV fire unfolds, O2 sensors can identify oxygen-depleted or oxygen-enriched environments, which can significantly impact the spread and severity of a fire. O2 sensors can assist in evaluating the effectiveness of fire suppression systems, ensuring a safe environment for responders and civilians.

Also critical are HF sensors, specifically designed to detect these hazardous substances not normally encountered in other combustion engine fires.

“HF is a toxic and corrosive gas that poses severe health risks to both humans and the environment” said Salvesen.

“By integrating HF sensors into gas detection solutions, responders can quickly identify and mitigate the risks associated with HF gas, enhancing their safety and the effectiveness of fire response efforts.”

Flexible equipment for the situation

Given the multiple gas hazards present in EV fires, gas detection equipment that enables multiple sensor combinations and hot swappable cartridges offers the best protection, allowing first responders to quickly adapt to the situation on scene.

“Your standard 4 gas meter may not give you the whole picture in a battery event. A meter that has a different sensor configuration to measure flammability and the presence of these specific toxic gases will go a long way to ensuring members’ safety,” added Salvesen.

For example, Blackline Safety’s G7 wearable connected multi-gas detectors can detect up to five gases simultaneously (with a portfolio of up to 20 gases to choose from) with swappable cartridges that can be configured to match the situation or address evolving needs.

Real-time visibility, reliable connectivity

Cloud-connected equipment allows incident commanders to see what is happening in real-time—even from a remote command center —so they can make data-informed safety decisions.

For example, instant alerts and notifications of location-stamped gas readings let incident commanders know exactly where gases are present and which personnel are at risk, allowing them to make decisions on where to direct responders and to take immediate action to prevent further escalation.

Connected safety solutions advance EV fire response by providing real-time gas level insights, personnel location information and early toxic and flammable substance detection. This data empowers incident commanders to make informed decisions on evacuation routes and resource allocation.

Gas detectors with LEL-MPS, O2, CO, and HF sensors are crucial as they offer early warning capabilities and enable rapid response to potential fire hazards. They ensure prompt identification of flammable gases, oxygen levels and toxic substances, thereby preventing fire escalation and safeguarding lives.

Blackline Safety Corp., a company specialising in connected safety technology, has secured a new $1.4 million contract with a water utility provider in Australia.

This agreement involves the supply of Blackline’s Loner Mobile app and G7c cloud-connected safety devices.

The contract follows an independent analysis which identified Blackline Safety devices as the leading lone worker solution globally.

Details of the contract and technology

The latest deal is part of a series of successful contracts between Blackline Safety and water utility providers.

Blackline’s technology is known for features such as SOS latch, fall and no motion detection, and real-time connectivity, which are essential for ensuring worker safety in emergency situations.

Currently, these devices are used by half of the water and wastewater companies in the United Kingdom.

Vice President of International Sales at Blackline Safety, Peter Attalla, highlighted the suitability of their devices for the utility sector: “Our devices are particularly well suited to the utility industry, including water and wastewater,” said Attalla.

“People in these fields are at elevated risk when they go to work.”

The demand for comprehensive safety solutions

Connected safety program announced by Blackline Safety

Blackline Safety Corp. a leader in connected safety technology, has announced a $2 million (£1.3 million) deal with Coventry, England-based Severn Trent Water – UK’s second largest water company – for connected personal gas detection devices to protect its employees and support its digital transformation.

With this new deal, Blackline Safety will protect more than 10,000 workers across six of the 12 UK water and wastewater authorities that now use Blackline’s industry-leading technology.

Earlier this month, Severn Trent began the deployment of the first 1,650 Blackline G7c wearable devices.  Over the coming months, the water authority will replace their existing gas detection units with more than 2,600 Blackline Safety G7c wearable devices and associated services.

The three-year investment, secured via Blackline Verwood, UK-based distribution partner Breathe Safety, includes an option to extend for an additional five years of service, which would bring the total value to more than $4.2 million (£2.7 million). Breathe Safety is leading the implementation and device rollout with Severn Trent.

Blackline Safety announces equipment trade-in programme

Blackline Safety Corp, a global leader in connected safety technology, has unveiled an equipment trade-in program designed to make it easier for fire departments and emergency response teams to acquire cutting-edge gas detection equipment and the monitoring software.

The Blackline Safety program allows fire departments and emergency response departments to trade in older safety monitoring equipment that is either end-of-life or not working properly, in exchange for credit towards the purchase of next-generation Blackline Safety G7 EXO area monitors or G7 personal gas detectors.

The opportunity to upgrade also gives first responders access to equipment with longer battery life, ensuring it outlasts even the longest response scenario.
