The Fire Protection Research Foundation is to host its final webinar of its 2022 Annual Webinar Series on Thursday, December 8 on the topic: Long COVID: A Unique Fire Service Perspective.

The webinar will look at the a significant number of individuals who continue to be plagued with unresolved symptoms of Long COVID —including shortness of breath, brain fog, fatigue, and cardiovascular complications.

It will discuss the fire service occupational specific concerns about the long-term effects of COVID, or ‘long COVID’, and how the fire service can better recognize, understand, and manage these challenges to protect firefighter health and safety.

The webinar will provide an update on what is known from the scientific literature about long COVID, and the initial findings from data collected from members of the fire service about their experiences with long COVID.

Dr. Denise Smith, Skidmore College, Dr. Sara Jahnke, Center for Fire, Rescue and EMS Health Research, and Katie Rusk, San Diego Firefighter’s Regional Wellness Program will lead this webinar discussion.

New Jersey earmarks Covid fund for fire departments

New Jersey is set to use $10 million in federal coronavirus relief funds to help provide fire departments with more safety and sanitary equipment, officials announced Monday.

The state’s Firefighter Grant Program will allow local and regional fire departments to apply for the taxpayer money from the American Rescue Plan, which Congress passed to provide stimulus funds in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We know how hard the pandemic was on our firefighting community,” said Governor Phil Murphy during an event championing the program at the Hackensack Fire Department. “We know the stress that all of you are under each and every day, not knowing what you may up against while on call … while simultaneously worried about the health of your families.”

Murphy said the money would be used not just for helmets, gloves, and boots but for chemical-free protective clothing and cleaning equipment and products to help prevent the spread of illness, noting that firefighters faced many health and safety risks during the pandemic.

“Firefighters have been working on the front lines with our health care and law enforcement professionals throughout this pandemic, and Governor Murphy and I are grateful for the heroic work they do every day to save lives,” said Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver, Commissioner of the Department of Community Affairs.

“The Firefighter Grant Program is going to help provide them with the essential resources they need to ensure their safety and well-being so they can continue to do their jobs.” 

Rep. Josh Gottheimer, a member of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus said “We’re now clawing back even more federal dollars to support our local fire departments and first responders, particularly for our smaller ones where resources are even more stretched. This critical investment will not only keep our communities, families, and brave first responders safe, but it will also help lower our property taxes and make life more affordable for Jersey families.

“The new American Rescue Plan Firefighter Grant program claws critical federal resources back from Washington for Jersey fire departments – to protect our communities, our families, firefighters, and EMTs. We must always get the backs of our first responders.”

Kyle Hughes, a Paterson firefighter and president of the New Jersey Firefighters Mutual Benevolent Association Local 2 union, welcomed the funds as firefighters across the state deal have dealt with the pandemic in addition to fires, floods, chemical spills, and downed wires the last two years.

“Despite this even greater risk, our members never wavered to their duties,” Hughes said. “They put others before themselves time and time again. … Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

Weber Hydraulik secures ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 certifications

Rescue equipment manufacturer Weber Hydraulik has secured two crucial environmental and sustainability certifications in ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 at its base in Losenstein, in Austria.

Both certifications comply with environmental guidelines and the efficient use of energy contribute significantly to the sustainable orientation of companies.

“Sustainability is a very important topic for us. We are constantly working on optimizing our processes with regard to the set environmental and energy targets. The ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 certifications now show quite objectively that we meet very high requirements in this regard,” says Günther Rebhandl, Head of Quality Management at WEBER- HYDRAULIK, who is pleased with the success.

Environmental risks can be reduced through sustainable environmental and energy management. At the same time, environmental performance is made transparent and targeted improvement measures are devised. Lower consumption of resources such as energy and water, plus the reduction of disposal costs also offer an economic advantage over the competition in the long term.

Environmentally friendly energy and heating technology

At its site in the Enns Valley, the innovative manufacturer goes far beyond the required measures. Photovoltaic systems installed on the roof of the building provide clean electricity from solar energy. With an output of 364 kWp, part of the electricity used in production is self-generated. “The proportion of electricity requirements that can be covered by solar energy has been continuously increased in recent years,” explains Albert Koppenberger, who is responsible for plant maintenance at the Losenstein site.

The heating system is also powered by wood chips in an environmentally friendly manner. “Our entire heating requirements are covered by the wood chip heating system,” Koppenberger continues. This makes the Losenstein site independent of oil and gas.

E-mobility reduces CO2 emissions

In March 2019, it was discovered that transportation causes a large part of the CO2 pollution at the Losenstein site. “By using e-mobility for work trips, we saw great potential to reduce the site’s CO2 emissions. That was the starting signal for the e-mobility campaign,” says Koppenberger. An attractive leasing model for e-cars was worked out for employees at the Losenstein site. In the meantime, around 70 employees have taken advantage of the campaign. The electricity required for the e-cars also comes from the company’s own photovoltaic system. Employees can charge their vehicles free of charge at the 20 newly installed charging points.

“Passing the certifications once again proves the consistently high quality orientation as well as the environmentally friendly and energy-efficient design of all processes in the company,” confirm Kurt Sperrer and Bernhard Obermayr as managing directors at the Losenstein site. “We are convinced that we can also offer our customers a decisive advantage with our sustainable orientation.”

Data Intelligence: Shaping the Future for Fire Conference

The inaugural ‘Data Intelligence: Shaping the Future for Fire Booking’ is set to be hosted this May by the members of the NFCC Digital and Data Programme.  

The conference, to be held on 13 and 14 June in Liverpool, will inform and engage with strategic leaders and those in professional data roles around how effective use of data can significantly drive transformation in the fire and rescue service.

HMICFRS and Home Office have identified data as a key priority and senior leaders are encouraged to attend to support data specialists in delivering against these priorities.

The rapid growth of the Fire Safety Event

Fire protection market in construction will be worth $4.32 billion in 2022

The global fire protection materials for the construction market is expected to grow from $3.81 bn in 2021 to $4.32 bn in 2022 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.4%. These projections are based on a report published on Reportlinker.com titled ‘Fire Protection Materials For Construction Global Market Report 2022’. 

The growth is mainly due to the companies resuming their operations and adapting to the new normal while recovering from the Covid-19 impact, which had earlier led to restrictive containment measures involving social distancing, remote working, and the closure of commercial activities that resulted in operational challenges. The market is expected to reach $6.04 billion in 2026 at a CAGR of 8.7%.

The fire protection materials for the construction market consist of sales of fire protection materials by entities (organisation, partnership, sole traders) that are used to protect the construction sites from fire and other safety situations. Fire-resistant building materials are any materials that resist fire and do not melt for a long time, that is, they can withstand heat long enough for the residents of the structure to safely leave the premises. Fire protection materials include concrete, reinforcement steel, gypsum, cast iron, bricks, asbestos cement, timber, stone, glass, among others.

The main types of fire protection materials for construction are coatings, mortar, sealants and fillers, sheets or boards, spray, preformed devices, putty, cast-in devices, and others. Mortar is a substance used to fill the gaps between bricks and blocks in masonry construction.

The growing regulations on the mandatory use of fire safety materials are likely to have a positive impact on the growth of fire protection materials for the construction market. Nittan launches visual alarm base for photoelectric smoke detector

Nittan Europe, a manufacturer of fire detection products sold globally, has launched the EV-PYSVAD Visual Alarm Base for use with its EV-PYS Photoelectric smoke detector.

The new EV-PYSVAD is a Type A Indoor Beacon Base VAD with enhanced performance. It features 12 high power white LEDs which provide the required light output to meet the EN 54-23 Category C (Ceiling) certification requirements with a rating of C 3.0 x 5.0. As a slave device taking its commands from the EV-PYS detector, the EV-PYSVAD does not require an individual loop address.

The EV-PYSVAD has been designed to be a backward compatible drop-in replacement for its predecessor, the EV-PSBCN Visual Indicator Base, without the need for panel upgrades or type code changes.

The EV-PYSVAD Visual Alarm Base has been introduced specifically for use with Nittan’s EV-PYS Photoelectric smoke detector, which comes with a sounder.

The EV-PYS features an advanced smoke sensing chamber designed for maximum effectiveness. A spherical feature incorporated within the chamber provides superior light scattering, plus an orange LED is used, which significantly improves response across the fire spectrum.

The shape of the ‘PY’ smoke chamber is optimised to minimise the effect of dirt/dust contamination, plus a fine stainless-steel micromesh prevents the ingress of even the smallest insects which can create false alarms.

Global fire alarm and detection market to reach $53.15bn in 2032

The global fire alarm and detection market is expected to be $53.15bn in 2032 expanding at a CAGR of 6% from 2022 through to 2032. The market is currently valued at $29.68bn in 2022.

The increase is forecasted to comes from a demand for developed fire safety systems in mining, automotive, petrochemical, oil and gas exploration, and power and utility sectors.

Rising deployment of fire alarm and detection systems across educational institutes and increasing awareness about its benefits among residents for fire detection systems are key factors propelling market expansion during the forecast period. Furthermore, ongoing technological developments in fire detection and alarming devices is expected to boost the industry’s growth in the coming time.

In addition, the advancement of wireless and remote function fire detection and alarm systems are anticipated to offer significant opportunities for expansion in the evaluation time.  

The Covid-19 pandemic ushered in a change in the demand and consumption pattern of fire alarm and detection systems. With increasing hospitalisation rates and shift towards remote working, the need for residential and healthcare setting oriented fire safety protocols have increased, leading to growing sales of fire alarm and detection systems across these domains.

Key players in the global fire alarm and detection market have adopted various strategies of mergers, acquisitions, and partnerships. In August 2021, ProPharma group acquired iSafety Systems, an Indian pharmacovigilance service provider.

Then in July 2021, ICON plc acquired a CRO, called PRA Health Sciences. The objective of the acquisition was to increase the services portfolio of ICON plc. In October 2020, Honeywell rolled out its first tools from its new suite of Connected Life Safety Services (CLSS), which is its first all-in-one cloud platform for fire safety systems.

Cladding removal plans submitted in Reading

The application to remove combustible aluminium composite material (ACM) from Hanover House in the city of Reading has been submitted, three years after the cladding was discovered.

In November 2017, firefighters for Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) recommended the closure of the car park below the tower after ACM was discovered, with RBFRS stating that it recommended this ‘due to fears a vehicle fire could spread to the flats above’. The car park was discovered to have used ACM identified in the government’s safety tests, though residents of the newly refurbished flats were ‘still in their homes’.

The seven storey building, a former driving test centre, was converted from offices into 14 flats without ‘changes to its external appearance’, receiving a new roof and internal refurbishment. Each of the flats and the communal areas are fitted with sprinklers, and ‘have other safety measures’ according to RBFRS, which was ‘notified’ about the cladding in the car park ‘as a result of guidance’ from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

Reading Chronicle has now reported on the plans submitted to remove the cladding from the block, with the statement from Oxford Architects stating: ‘The existing cladding has been confirmed by the Berkshire Fire Service as potentially proposing a fire safety risk to the residents at Hanover House. The current building is therefore not providing a safe environment for its residents.’

The news outlet said that plans to remove the cladding had been approved in October 2018, but permission expired a year later ‘with no work having taken place’, and the latest proposal ‘seeks to both remove and replace’ the ACM with a powder coated metal system that Hanover House Residents Management Company – which manages the block – says ‘meets all necessary fire and safety requirements’.

It added in turn that a Reading estate agent had been fined £30,000 for ‘delaying telling buyers of a flat in the block’ about the cladding, with the building one of four in Reading discovered to have been clad with ACM, including St Lawrence House, a social housing block; Queen’s Court, a student accommodation block; and Crossway Point, another social housing block.

Of those buildings, the cladding at Lawrence House was removed at the end of 2019, while the material on Queen’s Court was removed in March 2020; remedial work at Crossway Point was paused as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and is expected to be concluded in December.

Fire Door Safety Week: 60% of local authorities delay fire door programmes

Fire Door Safety Week exists to stamp out the legacy of fire door neglect and to educate on the importance of fire door safety. To launch this year’s campaign, the British Woodworking Federation (BWF) have shared research into the state of fire door maintenance, inspection and replacement programmes across local authority owned and managed housing in the UK.

Over half (52%) of UK local authorities responding to a Freedom of Information (FOI) request reported delays to planned fire door maintenance and replacement in the first half of 2020. The number rises to 60% when inspection delays are also factored in.

According to the data obtained from 147 local authorities that own and manage their own housing stock, at least 26,318 fire doors were scheduled for maintenance or replacement between January and June 2020, but 16,580 did not progress – meaning 63% of individual planned works were delayed until at least the second half of the year, affecting a minimum of 9,954 individual properties.

In addition to delays to maintenance and replacement in the first half of the year, 31% of all responding local authorities stated their fire door inspection programmes were delayed, affecting at least 12,596 fire doors.

Not all responding local authorities provided reasons for delay, but over half (53%) of those experiencing delays cited COVID-19-related restrictions, including limited property access and availability of contractors due to social distancing guidelines. However, it was positive that several local authorities proactively mentioned that emergency repair works to fire doors continued throughout the lockdown period to maintain the safety of residents.

Of those local authorities that experienced delays, 65% intend to commence works by the end of the year. This signals that the majority recognise the importance of properly fitted and maintained fire doors. However, worryingly 31% of local authorities stated that they are yet to define a date for recommencing the planned works.

The findings follow an open letter from the London Fire Brigade to all housing providers in the Capital urging them to put plans in place ahead of new fire safety legislation coming into effect. The letter strongly advises building owners to consider the risks of existing fire doors in their fire risk assessments, regardless of the height of the building.

Fire’s don’t stop – it’s time to prioritise fire doors

It’s clear COVID-19 has understandably impacted on service delivery across a variety of sectors, but fires don’t stop. With the UK lockdown period forcing many people to spend more time at home, people without fit for purpose fire doors have been put at risk. There is a need for continued and urgent focus on ensuring the safety of all building occupants whether in local authority or privately-rented accommodation, workplaces or other building types.

Whilst we have focused upon local authority owned and managed housing stock, we strongly suspect that our insight reflects the wider market. We hope that through this years’ Fire Door Safety Week, we can draw attention to these important issues and encourage all with responsibility for fire doors to take urgent action across fire door maintenance, inspection and replacement.

When it comes to fire door inspections, fire doors can become damaged at any time, especially where they are frequently used. If a damaged door goes unidentified it cannot perform its life-saving role. Like previous years, this year’s Fire Door Safety Week campaign will emphasise the importance of regular inspections, carried out by trained and competent professionals.
