Wetherby Wall Systems introduces new retrofit solution

Wetherby Wall Systems has launched InteriA, a new Internal Wall Insulation (IWI) system designed to provide A-rated, moisture-open retrofit solutions for solid wall buildings in the UK.

The company, part of the ROCKWOOL Group, confirmed that InteriA was developed in response to growing demand for insulation systems that combine strong fire performance with effective moisture management.

The launch took place earlier this week and marks the latest addition to Wetherby’s retrofit portfolio.

Addressing challenges in insulation for solid wall buildings

Wetherby Wall Systems said Internal Wall Insulation remains essential for improving thermal efficiency where external upgrades are limited by planning, heritage or access constraints.

The company noted that the market has lacked a complete system capable of balancing fire safety and moisture control, both now recognised as central to government best practice guidance.

According to the manufacturer, InteriA is made entirely from A-rated, non-combustible stone wool components, meeting modern safety expectations while incorporating a moisture-open construction that allows walls to dry on both sides.

The company explained that this approach aligns with advice from the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS), which identifies moisture permeability as key to minimising condensation and safeguarding long-term building health.

Compliance, performance and sustainability

Wetherby Wall Systems said InteriA delivers a slim profile that enables refurbishment U-values with 100mm of insulation while supporting compliance with PAS 2035 and the Building Safety Act.

The system offers a 60-year design life, uses recyclable materials and can be integrated into the RockCycle waste recovery scheme.

The firm stated that installation has been engineered for minimal disruption and improved practicality, making it suitable for occupied dwellings and large-scale retrofit programmes.

Industry response to new A-rated system

Edwards launches outdoor fire alarm strobes for harsh environments

Edwards adds outdoor models to fire alarm range

Edwards has announced new outdoor models in its Genesis LED fire alarm series, designed for extreme environments and wide-area coverage.

According to Edwards, the new extended candela devices include strobes and speaker-strobes that reach up to 115 candela light output, suitable for outdoor and wash-down areas.

The company stated that the appliances deliver reduced energy consumption with an 86 percent lower current draw compared to previous models.

These new units can be installed in new or retrofit systems and are backwards compatible with legacy Genesis products.

Edwards said the devices are engineered to withstand water, dust, and temperature extremes, targeting locations such as car parks, cold storage rooms, and manufacturing sites.

Energy efficiency and electrical performance features

The new Genesis LED Outdoor models are designed to support installation flexibility and long-term efficiency.

Edwards stated that the appliances use a constant current draw across multiple light settings, simplifying system design and allowing more devices per circuit.

The company said this helps reduce wire size and extend wiring distances without requiring recalculations for voltage drop.

All models are backwards compatible with legacy Genesis units, supporting phased upgrades or additions without system redesigns.

According to Edwards, this results in cost savings in both materials and labour during installation.

Deployment in extreme outdoor and industrial settings

The company said the appliances are suitable for locations that experience harsh weather or sanitation requirements.

Edwards confirmed the products are NEMA 4X and IP66 UL listed for resistance to water spray and dust ingress.

They have been tested beyond those standards, achieving an IP67 rating for further protection.

The operating temperature range spans from -40°F to 151°F, according to Edwards.

Target applications include outdoor building perimeters, zoo enclosures, freezers, and production facilities.

Additional audio alarm options and configuration flexibility

Edwards has also introduced new wall-mounted, low frequency horns and horn-strobes as part of the Genesis LED series.

The company said these are tailored for sleeping areas and use a 520 Hz tone to improve occupant alertness.

All devices are field-configurable, with selectable light, sound, and voltage settings for ceiling or wall mounting.

According to Edwards, the speaker models exceed ‘Excellent’ speech intelligibility thresholds under the STI rating system.

To simplify installation, a room-side wiring plate has been added for ease of access during fitting and servicing.

New trigalight marker features self-powered illumination technology

Revolutionary self-powered illumination technology launched

As reported by mb-microtec, the company has launched its new trigalight marker, a product using innovative self-powered illumination technology.

Dräger launches BG ProAir for longer firefighting operations

Dräger has launched the Dräger BG ProAir, a closed-circuit breathing apparatus designed to protect firefighters attending long-duration deployments such as those in tall buildings, complex structures, basements and tunnels. 

The BG ProAir’s positive pressure breathing closed circuit prevents toxic substances from entering the breathing system. As a result, both inhalation and exhalation are optimised by cooling and enriching the air with oxygen before inhaling, and CO2 being absorbed when exhaling.

An even distribution of the breathing apparatus’ weight has also been implemented to enhance comfort and ergonomics which are especially important during extended missions. 

Oxygen is supplied according to the wearer’s personal workload, allowing more than 4 hours duration at low breathing rates and the new cooling concept also makes breathing easier and more natural, allowing the firefighter to manage the incident at a lower work rate.  

It also features smart onboard electronics including a low-pressure sensor. The integrated sensor warns when there is a lack of oxygen to ensure safe breathing and provides a low pressure leak test of the breathing system. 

The BG ProAir’s housing features reflectors and a buddy light system that can alert other firefighters to their team members’ vital information, such as cylinder pressure, and operating time.  

With a high contrast, full-colour display, user data is plainly visible even in the most difficult environments such as darkness, bright sunlight or smoke. An integrated Bluetooth module provides a short range connection to work with external devices such as gas detectors as well as a PC connection to download data and perform configuration.  

The BG ProAir’s integrated data telemetry and RFID assists the user in multiple scenarios such as entry control management and absorber status tracking. In addition to time calculations such as time to whistle, Dräger have also integrated recognised features like PASS, ADSU and temperature readings. 

With a fully sealed housing, the BG ProAir has been approved to the highest standards for heat, flame, and chemical resistance. For additional safety, it also comes with an optional buddy system enabling the user to safely share oxygen with those in need during rescue situations. 

The new apparatus is designed to be easy to assemble, disassemble and clean – vital for Fire Services that are now further prioritising thorough and consistent cleaning processes to deal with contaminants.

UL receives accreditation to certify pressure equipment in EU and UK

UL (Underwriters Laboratories) has been accredited to certify pressure equipment used in the EU and UK market.

The UK Conformity Assessed (UKCA) marking is a new UK product marking used for goods placed on the market in Great Britain. It covers most goods that previously required the CE marking.

After an initial transition phase, most products introduced to Great Britain’s market previously required CE marking must: Have the UKCA marking, be accompanied by compliance documentation and be in compliance with the relevant regulation for Great Britain.

As of January 2021, the UKCA marking applies also to pressure equipment and will require a certificate from an UK Approved Body.

UL International (UK) Ltd received accreditation from UKAS and expanded its UK Approved Body scope to cover Pressure Equipment Regulations in the UK (Approved Body Number: 0843) – the equivalent of the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) in the EU.

UL said the accreditation has enhanced its portfolio and enables its experts to evaluate and certify products to UK-specific requirements that help ensure safer use of pressure equipment.

UL can now also help customers to have continuity of third-party services for access to any market in Europe, Great Britain and Northern Ireland through its accredited Notified and Approved Bodies.

Blackline Safety announces equipment trade-in programme

Euralarm: to hinder or not to hinder, that is the CPR question

Standards for products and services are at the heart of success of the fire safety industry. Euralarm’ members need a fast and flexible standards-setting system because it is not only the best way to serve the interests of customers, the industry and society but also is a basic requirement for a safe and secure society. Their standardisation system helps them to continue to deliver the highest levels of safety and security to citizens.

However, for the competitiveness of the electronic fire safety industry, the impact of the CPR on standardisation has according to their members unfortunately not met expectations. This industry as well as many others depend on standardised product performance requirements and standardised behaviour, which is at odds with the interpretation of the CPR following the European Court of Justice judgement on the James Elliot case.

For example, alarm buttons to activate a fire alarm system are across Europe – and the world – always red. Under the CPR, this is not seen as essential criteria and could change now with national solutions, which would lead to building occupants being confused. In one country the button is red and in another could be any other colour. The company’s expectation in the CPR is to ensure the European wide acceptance of test laboratory results, which in turn supports the movement of construction products across Europe. But now it has taken a different turn since the CJEU judgement. Further, trying to cover a very wide assortment of products from aggregate to electronic systems is proving to have a negative effect on the standardisation of fire detection and alarm products.

Background

The free movement of goods is one of the success stories of the European project. It has helped to build the internal market from which European citizens and businesses are benefiting and which is at the heart of EU policies. It was that same free movement of goods that was behind the introduction of the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) in 2011. With this regulation the EU wanted to establish a common “playing field” for products for the construction industry. To assess or declare the conformity of the products use is made of the so-called harmonised standards.

Harmonised standards

Harmonised standards are European standards that are developed by a recognised European Standards Organisation, such as CEN CENELEC or ETSI. These standards define the common technical language to be used by manufacturers to express the technical performance of their products, by regulators to express their requirements and by designers, contractors, and other construction stakeholders to efficiently exchange information. The standards provide a solid technical basis for testing the performance of products, allowing manufacturers to prepare a declaration of performance (DoP) for their products as defined in the CPR and to affix the CE mark. The CE marking signifies that a product complies with relevant safety, health, or environmental regulations across the European Economic Area (EEA).

Working with European harmonised standards offers many benefits. First, the technical relevance is guaranteed since the standards are the result of open and transparent discussions by interested stakeholders in the European Standardisation Organisations (ESO). Following these discussions, the standard is adopted by one of the ESOs (CEN, CENELEC, ETSI) which makes the European standard relevant to the market as well. And since the European standard is requested by the EU and cited in the Official Journal of the EU (OJEU) the harmonised standards are also relevant for the EU politics. When using a harmonised standard, it is assumed that the product complies with the basic requirements of the directive. This ‘presumption of conformity’ fulfils the circle that is needed for the free circulation of a product on the EU Single Market.

One size fits all?

Overlooking the construction industry, there is a very wide range of building products that fall under the scope of the CPR, ranging from low tech products like asphalt for road construction to high tech products like fire detection devices for buildings. Most of these products fall into categories that allow manufacturers to self-declare compliance with standards. In case they cannot declare it themselves, there are several third-party testing institutes that can help them. However, fire protection systems and equipment (and to an extent also security products) must be third party assessed and certificated before being “placed on the market”.

So far, it looks as if working with harmonised standards for assessing or declaring product conformity worked well. That changed with the so-called James Elliot case. James Elliot Constructions started a case at the European Court of Justice against Irish Asphalt. The building company claimed that the aggregate that was provided by the asphalt manufacturer was not compliant with the specifications of the relevant harmonised standard for aggregates. The European Court of Justice regarded privately produced technical harmonised standards, as a provision of EU law. In its ruling the Court not only addressed this specific context, but also raised the need to address some specific aspects of the functioning of the European standardisation system.

Aligning the pace of market and standardisation

The James Elliot case triggered the European Commission to set up additional assessment processes by which harmonised standards, once elaborated, can be reviewed in retrospect. This development has brought the review and publication of standards in the Official Journal of the EU (OJEU) to a stillstand. In 2019, not one single standard was cited in the OJEU and there is no hope of a change.

The additional assessment processes for harmonised standards may not be of great importance for low tech products that remain the same for decades, but it is for high tech products, such as fire safety equipment. The rapid technological developments of these, and other high-tech products require up-to-date versions of harmonised standards. What is more, product innovation utilising new technology is an important capability for the fire safety and security industry to improve performance and usability. Most of the fire protection systems and equipment also employ electronics and software that needs to be updated on a regular basis. These aspects demand that related standards and regulations are sufficiently flexible and responsive to encompass such changes. The current CPR practice clearly does not accommodate these needs.

Evaluation

Quite recent, the European Commission evaluated the CPR with the purpose to assess to what extent the CPR has met its objectives and helped reduce obstacles to the internal market for construction products. Among the main shortcomings identified by this evaluation are the insufficient performance and output quality of the standardisation system under the CPR, and the low uptake of simplification provisions. These factors have reportedly resulted in a lack of legal clarity according to the EC.

Euralarm shares with the EC the conclusion that a revision and a simplification of the CPR is needed. However, it is not with the production of technical standards that leads to the insufficient performance and output quality, but the requirements set up by the Commission for the harmonisation of standards under the CPR. From a technical standpoint, all European standards impacting the fire safety sector have been updated but only two revised standards in EN 54 series have been accepted by the European Commission and hence cited.

Notwithstanding the disproportionate standards development cost for the industry, the changes in the CPR have created serious obstacles to export fire safety products outside of Europe and more generally the competitiveness of the European Industry. While their international competitors have been able to update their standards to the latest technological development, the European fire safety industry is unable to compete because the publication of new standards is blocked.

Instead of blocking the publication of new or revised standards the focus should be on the availability of up-to-date versions of harmonised standards with shorter times between reviewing, updating and publishing standards. This will give the fire safety industry as well as many other industries that depend on (advanced) technical products more flexibility when developing standards to ensure safety of the European citizens and preserve its competitiveness in the international market.

Inim Electronics launches new range of ultra-low power consumption alarm sounders
