Extreme heat, dense smoke and rapid evacuations have disrupted staff and operations across Europe during what may become the region’s most severe wildfire season in decades.

Organisations have faced sudden relocations, air quality hazards and supply challenges, often without the planning needed to manage prolonged disruption.

These pressures have highlighted weaknesses in crisis structures and reinforced the need for clearer health guidance, faster decision-making and stronger continuity measures.

International SOS supports clients through these conditions by providing real-time security intelligence, medical advice and operational planning.

Their teams assist with evacuations, health protection, essential supplies, post-incident care and longer-term resilience work that helps organisations stay functional during extended wildfire activity.

To understand what this looks like in practice, IFSJ Editor Iain Hoey sat down with International SOS’s Adam Lakhani, Security Director and Dr Katherine O’Reilly, Medical Director, to discuss how their teams help organisations prepare for and respond to wildfire risks.

What challenges have organisations faced during nearby wildfires, especially for operations and staff welfare?

Lakhani: One of the biggest challenges is evacuation.

Wildfires spread quickly and unpredictably, catching people off guard.

Staff can suddenly find themselves unable to move freely, and industries that rely on fixed sites like factories and offices are severely impacted.

Dr O’Reilly: Along with relocating staff, ensuring they have essential supplies, such as face masks and bottled water, is also critical.

For example, during the January 2025 Los Angeles wildfires, we provided emergency accommodation for displaced employees and their families, helping them stay safe while businesses sustained continuity.

What practical problems do you encounter when accessing staff or protecting essential services during deployments?

Lakhani: The challenges our teams face can also mirror those of the people affected.

Crises can stretch teams over extended periods and with limited understanding of duration so the endurance of those on-the-ground, as well as supporting, can be a challenge.

Appropriate resourcing and rotations are essential.

Sometimes we simply can’t access certain locations because of essential restrictions.

During the Los Angeles wildfires, our teams worked around the clock to secure emergency housing, and ensure people were moved, safe and with critical supplies.

How do those challenges translate into health or safety risks for people in those settings?

Lakhani: The physical risk from wildfires remains acute.

During Canada’s 2025 wildfire season – one of the most severe on record – more than 7.3 million hectares were burned, forcing mass evacuations and creating widespread health and operational challenges.

International SOS supported organisations in protecting staff from poor air quality and extreme heat, which often converge to magnify risks.

There are also consequential security implications.

Large-scale evacuations can sometimes lead to looting or opportunistic crime, compounding the difficulties faced by affected communities.

Dr O’Reilly: The health impacts are both immediate and long term.

Inhalation of wildfire smoke – a toxic mix of heavy metals and carcinogens – can trigger asthma attacks, worsen Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and respiratory infections.

 Extreme heat adds further risk, with cases of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke rising.

In fact, in the first seven months of 2025, International SOS saw a 13% increase in heat-related assistance calls compared to the previous year.

There is also a significant psychological toll.

Evacuations, property loss, and prolonged smoke exposure often leads to anxiety, depression, and PTSD.

Too many organisations remain underprepared, with gaps in both mental health support and emergency planning.

Our role goes beyond the immediate response – whether that’s evacuations, medical support, or delivering essential supplies.

We also provide post-incident care, including counselling services and stress management.

Mental health is often overlooked, with up to 50% of those exposed to extreme events experiencing lasting psychological impacts.

How is International SOS adapting its services as wildfires and heatwaves grow earlier and more intense?

Lakhani: We’re taking several steps to help organisations prepare.

Each year we publish our Wildfire Insight Report ahead of the season, which looks back at the previous year, forecasts risks, and shares practical recommendations.

We’re also reinforcing our partner networks so that we can assist no matter the location or request.

Every organisation has different needs, however, so a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work.

With the complexities of modern-day business, tailored preparedness and resilient networks matter more than ever.

What single piece of advice would you give fire and safety professionals facing severe heat-driven conditions today?

Lakhani: Plan ahead and put a clear crisis management structure in place.

Too often, bureaucracy slows down decision-making.

Organisations should be asking: Who is on our crisis management team? Do we have clear escalation points? Have we assessed and run tests or simulations for responding to wildfire risks to our people, assets, and operations? If the answer to any part of this is no, those gaps need to be closed.

Dr O’Reilly: Raising awareness of health risks is just as important as structural preparedness.

Organisations should run education campaigns and share preventative health advice – especially as extreme weather intensifies.

Prevention is critical: hydration, rest schedules, and recognising early symptoms can make all the difference.

Arizona hosts wildfire aerial supervision academy for 2026 season preparation

Wildfire aviation training academy begins in Arizona

Wildland firefighters specialising in aerial supervision and airtanker operations are convening in Arizona over the next month to prepare for a potentially busy 2026 Fire Year.

The National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) stated that the National Aerial Supervision Training Academy (NASTA) will run primarily at the Phoenix Interagency Fire Center at Mesa Gateway Airport in Mesa, Arizona, and at Fort Huachuca in Sierra Vista, Arizona.

The academy is described as an umbrella for about a dozen aerial firefighting and support courses for personnel from numerous agencies.

The course areas described include aerial supervision, helicopter coordination, ground-based operations and aircraft dispatching.

The training is described as standardised across federal, state and local agencies to support a single approach to aviation operations during wildfires on any jurisdiction.

Courses, partners and coordination requirements

Airspace over wildfires is described as tightly controlled and requiring close coordination.

NIFC stated that the US Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service hosts the training and is joined by personnel from the US Wildland Fire Service, CAL FIRE, the State of Alaska and four military airlift wings that are part of the Modular Airborne Firefighting Systems program (MAFFS).

NIFC described this as the 12th annual academy and said it is expected to be among the largest.

Chris Tipton, fixed wing operations branch chief for the U.S. Forest Service, Fire and Aviation Management, said: “This is truly a team effort.

“We couldn’t do it without the cooperation of our other federal, state, local and military partners.”

Tipton said: “The courses offered as part of the academy are all geared towards attaining qualifications that will better prepare each firefighter for the season ahead”

Public aircraft activity and training schedule

Members of the public may see aircraft conducting practice water drops in remote locations on the Tonto and Coronado National Forests and other areas.

Arizona is described as an ideal location for aerial fire training due to weather, topography and access.

Clear skies are described as reducing the chance for lost training time due to inclement weather.

NIFC stated that the Phoenix Interagency Fire Center can accommodate the number of enrolled students and the aircraft used for the training.

The academy is scheduled to conclude on 11 March.

When responders are overwhelmed, what changes wildfire policy first?

Wildfire risk management priorities raised in Brussels

A high-level roundtable in Brussels on 30 January 2026 discussed integrated wildfire risk management across prevention, preparedness, response and recovery.

The International Association of Fire and Rescue Services (CTIF) published a summary report of the discussion, which provided strategic input to an upcoming European Commission Communication on Integrated Wildfire Risk Management.

Participants described wildfires as an increasing risk that is already overwhelming some national responders and is projected to grow in the next years.

The discussion called for an integrated approach that places greater emphasis on prevention and connects work across environmental, land-use, agricultural and civil protection policy.

A recurring theme was the role of healthy, actively managed forests and land as a first line of defence, including sustainable forest management, grazing, diversified land use, fuel management and spatial planning.

Speakers also linked fire-resilient areas to co-benefits cited in the report, including biodiversity, water protection, health, bioeconomy and rural vitality.

Sectors and obstacles highlighted for the next five years

The report sets out sector-specific changes discussed for the next five years, with investment in prevention and preparedness recurring across contributions.

In land use, forestry and agriculture, participants discussed embedding wildfire prevention objectives into legislation and funding frameworks, addressing land abandonment and making land and forest management economically viable.

Farmers, forest owners and local communities were described as indispensable partners due to their role in managing fuel and their frequent position as first responders.

In civil protection and emergency response, the discussion noted progress at EU level, alongside concerns that response systems are increasingly overwhelmed by simultaneous and extreme events.

The report links reinforced response capacity, including under rescEU and the pre-positioning of firefighters in high-risk areas, with reinforced prevention, post-fire analysis and learning, improved early detection, access to water resources and training and exchange.

In education, research and data, participants said knowledge exists yet is insufficiently scaled or operationalised, with data held by different actors including insurers identified as a possible input to improved risk assessment and decision-making.

The report also references technology including AI as a support across phases of the wildfire management cycle.

Fragmentation was identified as the dominant barrier, spanning responsibilities, funding streams and legal frameworks.

Policy silos between environment, agriculture, land use and civil protection were described as barriers to a holistic approach.

Short-term funding cycles and crisis-driven political priorities were cited as limiting sustained investment in prevention and its effectivity.

The report also notes a lack of status and release arrangements for volunteers as a barrier to spontaneous volunteering in emergencies.

The report describes the roundtable as the start of an ongoing policy dialogue on integrated wildfire risk management at EU level.

Wildland Fire Service to unify Interior wildfire programmes across bureaus

Who will lead the Wildland Fire Service rollout?

The US Department of the Interior (DOI) is moving to establish the U.S. Wildland Fire Service, with a new leader appointed to oversee implementation, the department said on 12 January 2026 in Washington.

The DOI described the plan as an effort to unify wildland fire management programmes across its bureaus and offices.

Wildland fire responsibilities are currently distributed across the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Land Management, Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park Service, Office of Aviation Services and the Office of Wildland Fire.

The DOI said the goal is to streamline decision-making, improve operational efficiency and strengthen the department’s ability to respond quickly to wildfire threats.

The department said the service is intended to support protection of lives, communities, critical infrastructure and public and tribal lands through a more integrated wildland fire management approach.

Leadership and implementation

The DOI selected Chief Brian Fennessy to oversee the creation of the U.S. Wildland Fire Service, who brings experience leading large wildfire response operations in California.

Fennessy said: “Wildfire response depends on coordination, clarity and speed.

“This initial planning effort is about bringing programs together, strengthening cooperation across the Department and building a framework that better supports firefighters and the communities they serve.

“I want to thank Secretary Burgum for this opportunity to serve in this role and look forward to working alongside of the brave men and women of the fire community.”

The DOI said Fennessy previously served as Chief of the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department and as Fire Chief of the Orange County Fire Authority.

It said he began his career with the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management, and has led wildfire suppression, aviation operations and emergency response.

Administration policy context

The DOI said the creation of the U.S. Wildland Fire Service aligns with the Trump Administration’s approach to modernising wildfire response, mitigation and prevention, as outlined in Executive Order 14308, Empowering Commonsense Wildfire Prevention and Response.

Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum said: “Wildfire does not discriminate.

“It impacts rural towns and major cities, businesses and families alike.

“Thanks to President Trump’s leadership, the Department of the Interior is taking decisive steps to strengthen coordination and preparedness as we confront an escalating wildfire challenge.”

The department also said wildfires are increasing in size, intensity and cost, with impacts it listed including communities, infrastructure, tribal trust assets, agriculture and local economies.

The DOI said it views wildfires as posing risks to public health, energy systems, water supplies and national security.

The department said the new structure is intended to position it to meet evolving wildfire challenges.

HEN Technologies raises $22M to develop an operating system for fire defence

Financing targets faster extinguishment and lower water use

HEN Technologies has closed an oversubscribed $20 million Series A round plus $2 million in venture debt to accelerate deployment of its Fluid-IQ predictive AI platform built on advanced fluid dynamics hardware.

The company said the financing was announced on Thursday 18 December 2025 and takes its total capital raised to over $30 million.

O’Neil Strategic Capital led the round, with participation from NSFO, Tanas Capital and z21 Ventures.

Silicon Valley Bank provided the venture debt.

Fluid-IQ and HEN Technologies data approach

HEN Technologies said the capital will fund expansion of its IoT-enabled hardware infrastructure as it works to capture what it described as the industry’s first comprehensive operational fire dataset.

Alex Garden, Managing Partner of O’Neil Strategic Capital, said: “We’re proud to lead this round and back HEN’s vision to create an entirely new category: the intelligent operating system for fire defense.”

“Their hardware-first approach has already proven transformative in the field with more than 1,000 organizations globally.

Wildfire context and technical claims

HEN Technologies linked the announcement to increasing wildfire costs and fire behaviour, including a claim that the Palisades fire in Los Angeles caused over $50 billion in damages.

Dr. Sunny Sethi, CEO of HEN Technologies, said: “Wildfires are more frequent, and modern structures burn eight times faster than legacy structures.

“Incremental changes cannot keep up.

“That’s why we are building transformational technology using Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) and AI-powered decision support.

“We are moving beyond optimizing tools to optimizing strategy.

“This is essential infrastructure for climate resilience and national security.”

The company said its IoT-enabled systems deliver three-times faster extinguishment and reduce water usage by 67% while capturing data on flow, pressure and pattern performance.

Partner network and scaling priorities

Akshay Thakor, COO of HEN Technologies, said: “We are capitalizing on our momentum by scaling three critical areas: partner enablement, customer experience and technical operations.

Hyrcanian UNESCO forests in Iran burning amid drought and complex terrain

Iran seeks aid for UNESCO forests

Iran has asked foreign governments to help contain a large wildfire in the Hyrcanian forests in northern Iran, after flames reignited in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed area in mid November.

Local media reported on Saturday 22 November 2025 that the fire has burned through the ancient forests for several days.

The blaze first broke out in early November, was temporarily brought under control and then reignited on 15 November, according to the official IRNA news agency.

The Hyrcanian forests run for around 1,000 kilometres along the Caspian Sea coast in Iran and into neighbouring Azerbaijan.

Mohammad Jafar Ghaempanah, Deputy to Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian, wrote on X that Iran had requested urgent assistance from friendly countries because domestic efforts could not keep the fire under control.

Hyrcanian forests and drought conditions

UNESCO recognised the Hyrcanian forests as a World Heritage Site in 2019.

The area is described as being between 25 and 50 million years old and containing more than 3,200 plant species.

UNESCO states that the forests include many rare and endemic tree species as well as relic and endangered plants.

The country is experiencing one of its most severe droughts in around six decades, according to the report.

Hossein Ali Mohammadi, Director General of crisis management for Mazandaran province, described the operation to extinguish the fire as “one of the most complex in recent years.”

Aerial firefighting support from Turkiye

Shina Ansari, Head of the Iranian Environmental Protection Organization, said two specialised water bomber aircraft, a helicopter and eight personnel will be dispatched from Turkiye.

Ansari explained on state television that Iran may also seek assistance from Russia if additional support is required.

The fire is affecting rocky terrain in the Elit area of Mazandaran province in northern Iran, where Tasnim news agency reported that hunters allegedly started the blaze.

Concerns over loss of ancient heritage

UN scientist and former Iranian environmental official Kaveh Madani commented on X about the impact of the fire on the forests.

Madani said: “Iranians are losing a natural heritage that is older than Persian civilization.”

Wildfire operations in heritage forest areas

The Hyrcanian wildfire shows how prolonged drought can make forest fires harder to control over extended periods.

For fire and rescue chiefs and senior officers, the case shows that large forest areas with complex terrain may require sustained aerial support and cross border assistance to prevent flare ups.

Emergency and disaster response managers can observe that Iran has turned to specialist water bomber aircraft, helicopters and foreign crews when on the ground resources alone were not enough to contain the fire.

FIRE Conference 2025 examines future-proofing of built environment

IFE blog highlights FIRE Conference 2025 discussions

The Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) has reported in a blog that FIRE Conference 2025 brought together sector leaders at the QEII Conference Centre and online to examine how to future-proof the built environment.

According to the IFE, the conference was sponsored by PartB and structured around plenary sessions, panel discussions and technical breakouts.

The organisation said the event opened with National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) Chief Executive Officer Susannah Hancock welcoming delegates and introducing a programme focused on the future of fire safety.

In the blog, the IFE described FIRE Conference 2025 as a key date in its calendar, with more than 500 delegates attending.

Plenary sessions cover leadership, resilience and standards

NFCC Chair Phil Garrigan OBE used the morning plenary to reflect on the previous eighteen months and the lessons drawn from that period.

He called for transformation across the sector, with a focus on efficiency and resilience in a changing operating environment.

Fire Sector Confederation Chair Steve McGuirk then examined leadership trends and the outlook for fire safety professionals.

IFE Chief Executive Officer Steve Hamm followed with a session on the need for greater standardisation in fire safety practice.

Hamm’s contribution focused on achieving more consistent approaches and on raising competency standards across the profession.

Global wildfire panel looks at rural–urban interfaces

The first panel session addressed rural and urban interfaces, wildfires and early detection.

Speakers included Rob Gazzard from the Forestry Commission, Chief Anthony Marrone from Los Angeles County Fire Department and former US Fire Administrator Dr Lori Moore-Merrell.

The panel shared international perspectives on wildfire management and the challenges of protecting communities where built environments meet high-risk vegetation, the discussion highlighted the role of technology in wildfire detection and monitoring.

Panel members also discussed the value of cross-border collaboration when preparing for large-scale wildfire activity.

Building safety and engineering workforce in focus

After a networking break, attention turned to building safety and regulatory experience.

Building Safety Regulator Chief Executive Officer Charlie Pugsley gave a review of 2025 activity and set out priorities for the coming year.

His session covered the regulator’s view of progress to date and areas where further work is still required.

A panel on attracting and retaining engineering talent, featuring contributions from Lynsey Seal and Michael Spearpoint.

Panellists highlighted the need for more diverse recruitment routes into fire engineering roles and for innovation in how employers support career development.

Technical breakouts and Moss Landing battery fire case study

The IFE blog noted that afternoon breakout sessions allowed delegates to choose between specialist topics.

Sessions examined construction product testing, competency in fire risk assessment, emergency standards and lithium-ion battery safety.

Speakers shared technical experience and practical approaches, and delegates were able to ask questions throughout.

A case study on the Moss Landing battery fire, presented by San Diego Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Robert Rezende and colleague Justin Marquez, was described as a standout element of the programme.

Colombia partners with OroraTech to launch national wildfire detection programme

The satellite partnership changing how Colombia tackles wildfires

Colombia has become the first country in Latin America to introduce a national wildfire detection programme using satellite technology.

The initiative follows a new partnership between the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) and OroraTech, supported by local representative GeoSpatial.

According to OroraTech, the pilot programme deploys the company’s Wildfire Solution (WFS) platform, which combines thermal satellite imagery with artificial intelligence to detect and track wildfires in near real time.

The system will deliver continuous monitoring across Colombia to help protect ecosystems, shorten emergency response times and reduce risks to affected communities.

Ana Milena Prada, Deputy Director for Risk Knowledge at UNGRD, said: “With this partnership, Colombia strengthens its risk knowledge capabilities through investment in a modern wildfire detection and monitoring infrastructure that will help protect our population, environment and biodiversity.

“It also enhances the work of institutions by enabling early threat identification and more timely response, even in the most remote areas of the country.”

Training and implementation across Colombia

More than 700 members of the National Disaster Risk Management System have been trained to use the WFS platform.

OroraTech’s Customer Success team led in-person training in Bogotá in May 2025, delivering practical sessions based on real case studies tailored to local wildfire conditions.

UNGRD has also conducted over 15 virtual and in-person sessions nationwide to support regional adoption and improve operational understanding of the platform.

Protecting biodiversity and building capacity

Colombia is the second most biodiverse country in the world, with nearly half its land located in the Amazon rainforest.

The national WFS platform will centralise wildfire intelligence, delivering alerts and data to emergency services, park rangers and government agencies.

The collaboration positions the country as a regional leader in space-based environmental protection and wildfire mitigation.

The adoption of a satellite-based early detection system introduces a model for integrating real-time thermal data and AI analytics into operational decision-making.

It also provides a case study in capacity building, showing how local authorities and emergency responders can be trained to use complex digital tools effectively.

FireDome conduct demonstration of wildfire system

FireDome has publicized the first real-world demonstration of its wildfire resilience system, a milestone that showed the technology suppressing spot fires with automated and precise smart capsules.

While others have shown innovation in elements of suppression or detection, FireDome’s demonstration proves an operational system that unites these capabilities into a holistic wildfire protection platform, establishing Wildfire Resilience-as-a-Service (RaaS).

During the demonstration, FireDome’s system demonstrated for the first time that an automated system can detect, target and suppress spot fires with precision in real-world conditions.

According to Fire Dome’s announcement, wildfires are no longer seasonal disasters; they’re year-round threats that destroy lives and rack up hundreds of billions in damages globally each year.

In states like California, the crisis has grown so severe that insurers are pulling back from entire communities.

FireDome’s technology

FireDome offers a different path, technology that intervenes in real-time to reduce destruction, safeguard assets and help restore confidence in wildfire-exposed regions.

By combining automation and AI decision-making algorithms, FireDome introduces a new category of climate adaptation technology: wildfire resilience-as-a-service (RaaS).

This end-to-end approach differentiates FireDome from others in the space, who address only one aspect of wildfire risk, by providing a holistic service that integrates detection, protection, decision-making and suppression.
