Fire Service receive Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers accolade at House of Commons

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS) was honoured to recently be named as one of the country’s Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers.

As part of the accolade, earlier this week (Tuesday 10th September) a representative from TWFRS proudly attended the House of Commons for a special lunch reception hosted by Baroness Smith, Minister for Skills, Apprenticeships and Higher Education for the recipients of the Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers award.

The announcement by the prestigious apprenticeship index has placed Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service among highly respected public and private sector organisations. 

Over the past six years, TWFRS have successfully delivered 145 in-house and externally operated apprenticeships, with results including 122 passes and 23 distinction grades. 

The workforce areas to benefit from the varying courses have been accountancy, community safety advisors, data protection, firefighter control, heavy vehicle technicians, learning and development consultant business partners, management and operational firefighters.

Dale Howey, Head of Learning & Development at TWFRS, said: “It was an honour and a privilege to attend the House of Commons to receive our award on behalf of the Service, our apprentices and the communities that we represent and protect across Tyne and Wear.

“To be amongst the gathered representatives from the Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers epitomised all of the hard work that goes on behind the scenes at TWFRS to help nurture the future generations of fire service employees.  We will use this recognition as a springboard to excel and develop for the years ahead.

“We would also like to thank all of the firefighters for their efforts in ensuring they engage with the development of the apprentices, and to the wider Learning and Development team who help to bring the programme to life.”

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service currently has 71 TWFRS employees taking part in the Apprenticeship Programme, with an additional 25 people starting in September.

The Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers* celebrates England’s outstanding apprenticeship employers and helps future apprentices, parents and careers advisers to identify apprenticeship opportunities at the country’s leading employers.

*Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service were placed 88th.

Lynsey McVay, Assistant Chief Fire Officer at TWFRS, said: “We are proud as a service to receive this prestigious accolade of being named amongst the Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers.

“It perfectly reflects all of the hard work delivered over the last six years as the apprenticeship scheme epitomises our investment in education and career development.  The beneficiaries of this work aren’t just the employees but their colleagues and the community which they both protect and represent.”

Every new emergency contact handler, community safety advisor and operational firefighter is enrolled on to the apprenticeship scheme. This allows them to study and develop as part of their on-the-job training once they start in their new role.

This year’s event welcomed 30 elite firefighters from Germany

September 4 – 5, TenCate Protective Fabrics hosted the third annual “Experience Days” firefighting event, a collection of hands-on training sessions designed for firefighters to put their skills to the test in real-world firefighting simulations. This year’s event welcomed 30 elite firefighters from Germany, all participating in intense training exercises over the two days. Intersec Awards extends deadline for submissions

The Intersec Awards has announced an extension to the deadline for entries in response to increased interest from applicants.

The new deadline is set for August 30, 2024.

The Awards aim to celebrate achievements in the fields of security, fire, and safety across a global audience of industry professionals.

The Awards encompass 15 categories recognising efforts across sectors such as commercial security, cybersecurity, and smart home systems.

Individuals and organisations now have until August 30 to submit their applications for industry-wide recognition.

Submissions are being accepted through an online portal, which allows for updates to entries up until the deadline.

Key dates and entry process

The timeline for the Intersec Awards extends beyond the submission deadline.

Following the August 30 deadline, a shortlist of entries will be announced on October 7, 2024.

Judging will be carried out in two rounds.

The fire and safety categories will be judged both in person and virtually on October 31, while the security categories will follow on November 1.

Winners will be revealed at the Intersec Awards Gala Dinner on January 15, 2025.

Award guidelines for entrants

Applicants are encouraged to read the entry guidelines carefully before submitting.

The Awards outline a clear and concise process to ensure successful submission.

Key points include the necessity to provide supporting evidence such as data or case studies, and avoiding content that resembles product brochures or sales pitches.

Kineis to unveil satellite-based fire detection technology at Sydney’s AFAC 2024

Kineis, a French satellite operator, will showcase its innovative satellite connectivity technology for early forest fire detection at the upcoming AFAC 2024 conference in Sydney.

As reported by Kineis, the event will take place from 3 to 6 September at the Sydney International Convention & Exhibition Centre, bringing together emergency service professionals from around the world.

The Kineis system uses a constellation of 25 nanosatellites to connect sensors placed on trees, which enables near-real time alerts for emergency services, even in areas with no terrestrial networks.

The sensors, powered by solar energy and integrated with artificial intelligence, detect abnormal gas levels related to fire outbreaks and relay this data to ground stations within 15 minutes.

Dryad Networks partners with Kineis for fire detection

Kineis has partnered with German company Dryad Networks to enhance its satellite connectivity technology with advanced gas sensors.

These sensors, installed on trees and powered by solar energy, detect air quality issues that signal a fire outbreak.

Data from these sensors is sent directly to Kineis’ satellites, which eliminates coverage gaps and allows for continuous monitoring.

According to Kineis, this innovation drastically reduces response times, helping authorities prevent large-scale environmental and infrastructure damage.

Kineis technology selected by the French government for early detection

In France, Kineis’ satellite connectivity has been recognised by the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion.

This technology has been chosen to be part of future IoT systems for forest fire detection.

This selection marks a shift in government strategies from fire suppression to early detection, driven by economic and ecological concerns.

The Kineis system provides reliable, large-scale fire detection while consuming low amounts of energy.

It also offers improved risk prevention for civil security during natural disasters, reducing the potential scale of devastation.

Applications extend to rail and electrical infrastructure

Beyond forest fire detection, Kineis’ satellite system is applicable to monitoring critical infrastructure, such as railway lines and electrical networks.

These linear installations are highly vulnerable to fire risks, whether caused by accidental sparks from trains or electrical arcs from power lines.

By integrating Kineis’ satellite connectivity, railway and electrical companies can monitor these vast areas in near real time, preventing potential fires and significantly reducing costs related to damage or power outages.

Kineis’ solution provides a continuous, reliable connection that helps safeguard remote infrastructure in areas where terrestrial networks may be absent.
