The P50 Eco is an addition to our P50 composite range, which requires no annual service costs—only a visual inspection by the end user.

For instance, Heathrow Airport has saved over a million pounds by using our products.

We are now replacing units that have been in service for 10 years with the new P50 Eco foam models, reflecting our commitment to long-term customer value.

Although there hasn’t been a ban on PFAS yet in the UK, the industry is expecting it around March 2025.

We are ahead of the game by introducing PFAS-free products now, which helps address environmental concerns and ensures compliance with future regulations.

Britannia Fire has initiated a pioneering scrappage scheme to phase out PFAS-containing units, offering those looking to replace their current extinguishers a trade-in incentive with money off our environmentally friendly P50 Eco replacement model.

The response has been fantastic, prompting us to reinvest in our factory and acquire more machinery to keep up with demand.

Recently, EmiControls announced the deployment of two Q-Containers at the Porsche Experience Center in Franciacorta, Italy, as reported by EmiControls.

This installation is part of an ongoing collaboration with Porsche Italia S.p.A. to enhance fire safety measures for electric vehicles (EVs) at various locations throughout Italy.

The Porsche Experience Center features multiple outdoor racetracks and circuits, including those for electric vehicles and karts.

Accidents on these tracks can cause significant damage to the vehicles.

Porsche Italia S.p.A. has adopted EmiControls’ fire protection solutions to mitigate the risks associated with potential fires in EVs.

Implementation and functionality of Q-Containers

The two Q-Containers will be operational within the next few weeks.

These containers are designed to place damaged vehicles under quarantine with 24/7 automatic fire monitoring.

This proactive approach aims to prevent fire hazards before they escalate, ensuring the safety of both the vehicles and the surrounding environment.

Dominik Cantonati, who oversees the e-mobility business unit at EmiControls, explained: “The primary function of the Q-Container is to contain and cool the battery in the event of thermal runaway, which often occurs unexpectedly and when the vehicle is unattended.”

He added that the system includes an off-gas detection feature that monitors emissions before, during, and after a venting event, allowing for a prompt cooling response to prevent thermal runaway.

Key features and benefits of Q-Container

The Q-Container offers two types of quarantine: ‘dry quarantine’ if no fire occurs, and ‘wet quarantine’ if a fire does break out.

In the case of a fire, the vehicle can be submerged up to 90 centimetres, depending on the vehicle type, to ensure comprehensive protection.

Cantonati highlighted: “This ensures rapid cooling of the battery pack with a compact volume of water at a relatively low temperature.”

Additionally, the Q-Container is equipped with a unique water mist system that uses minimal water to cover a large area, enhancing the cooling process.

The system is fully automated, ensuring that it can operate effectively even when staff are not present, such as during weekends and holidays.

Adaptability and future developments

Cantonati emphasised the flexibility of the Q-Container: “It occupies only slightly more space than a standard parking spot, reducing the required area by up to 90%.”

This compact design is particularly advantageous in densely populated areas where space is limited.

The container is also easily movable, allowing it to adapt to changing needs and environments.

User feedback has been instrumental in refining the Q-Container.

For instance, one customer suggested a cooling system positioned below the battery to accelerate the cooling process.

Other modifications have been made to accommodate different vehicle types and sizes, ensuring that the Q-Container remains a versatile and effective solution for various scenarios.

EU updates water directives to include firefighting foam pollutants

Council updates list of water pollutants

As reported by the Council of the European Union, the Council has agreed on a negotiating mandate to amend the water framework directive, the groundwater directive, and the directive on environmental quality standards.

This proposal updates priority substances and environmental quality standards in surface water and groundwater.

The Council’s mandate aims to balance ambitious goals for the EU’s water policy with flexibility for member states in implementing water legislation.

It seeks to maintain a level playing field and reduce the administrative burden.

Alain Maron, Minister of the Government of the Brussels-Capital Region responsible for climate change, environment, energy, and participatory democracy, stated: “Reducing pollutants and extending the monitoring to new substances, like forever chemicals or pharmaceuticals, in surface waters and groundwater is crucial in order to protect human health and our ecosystems.”

Inclusion of forever chemicals and pharmaceuticals

The proposal updates the list of water pollutants by including new pollutants and related quality standards for per- and poly-fluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS), pharmaceuticals, and pesticides.

Member states have agreed to maintain the Commission’s proposal on setting environmental quality standards for the sum of 24 PFAS in surface water.

PFAS are used in various products, including cookware, clothing, and firefighting foam.

For pharmaceuticals, the mandate includes quality standards for individual pharmaceutical products, such as painkillers, anti-inflammatory drugs, and antibiotics.

A stepwise approach is proposed for stricter quality standards when there is evidence of the need to protect the ecosystem.

Monitoring and reporting requirements

The water framework directive requires member states to submit river basin management plans and report on the status of water bodies.

The current directive applies a one-out-all-out principle, meaning all ecological and chemical indicators must meet EU quality standards.

This principle has made it difficult to show overall progress.

To address this, member states have agreed that the Commission will set EU-level indicators to measure progress uniformly.

The negotiating mandate also includes intermediate reporting, new monitoring techniques such as remote sensing, and the possibility of setting up an EU-wide monitoring facility to assist member states.

The mandate clarifies that short-term activities without lasting consequences or pollution relocation within or between water bodies will not be considered as deterioration, provided there is no overall increase in pollution.

Groundwater pollutants and future reviews

Regarding groundwater, the mandate narrows the scope to substances identified as being of national concern and sets EU-wide values only for synthetic substances.

Member states have until 2039 to achieve good groundwater chemical status.

The mandate aligns PFAS requirements for groundwater with the drinking water directive and includes quality standards for the four most problematic PFAS.

A mandatory ‘watch list mechanism’ for groundwater, similar to the one for surface water, is introduced.

Microplastics and antimicrobial resistance genes will be included in the watch list once harmonised monitoring and evaluation standards are established.

Next steps

The Council’s agreement on the negotiating mandate allows its presidency to begin talks with the European Parliament on the final text.

The European Parliament adopted its position on 24 April 2024.

“The fire protection measures have proven their worth many times over the last two years,” said Rico Sommerhalder.

On May 28, 2024, a fire protection event featuring a real fire test was held at the premises of Schneider Umweltservice AG in Volketswil, Switzerland, as reported by EmiControls.

The event included a demonstration of advanced fire protection systems, which was attended by invited guests from the Swiss fire protection sector.

Attendees included members of Swiss testing laboratories, fire protection planning offices, fire protection companies, and end customers from the recycling industry.

Specialist presentations on fire protection standards and technologies were part of the program.

Thomas Goetschi, owner of Goetschi und Inspection body for fire protection, delivered a presentation on Swiss fire protection standards and technologies.

Rico Sommerhalder, Managing Director of Schneider Umweltservice AG, presented the company’s fire protection measures, which include a VdS-certified infrared detection system from Orglmeister Infrarot-Systeme and an automatic extinguishing system with firefighting turbines from EmiControls.

Innovative extinguishing technology showcased

Bernd Riedmann, an employee of EmiControls, provided an overview of the innovative extinguishing turbine technology.

This technology has been successfully tested in fire scenarios by VKF-approved test laboratories and is accepted by Swiss building insurance companies.

The extinguishing system consists of the PYROsmart® camera from Orglmeister Infrarot-Systeme and the FT10e firefighting turbine from EmiControls.

Participants witnessed a live demonstration of the PYROsmart® camera and the FT10e firefighting turbine in action, showcasing the effectiveness of the technology in real fire situations.

The event provided an opportunity for participants to see the technology’s capabilities firsthand.

Fire suppression specialist Plumis has won gold at the 37th Edison Awards in the Products for Home Use category.

As reported by Plumis, the Edison Awards honour excellence in human-centred design, engineering, and new product development.

The award is considered one of the highest accolades in innovation and business success.

This latest win for Plumis’ Automist 13D highlights the company’s innovative approach to fire safety technology.

The Automist 13D has also been named on the TIME Best Inventions 2023 list and won silver at the New York Product Design Awards in November.

The system is designed as a sleek, targeted, wall-mounted alternative to traditional fire sprinklers.

It activates faster and uses ten times less water to tackle domestic fires, connecting directly to the standard water main and eliminating the need for large tanks.

Innovative features of Automist 13D

The Automist 13D reimagines traditional fire sprinklers with a design that blends seamlessly into modern homes.

The system targets the fire at its source, using watermist to cool and suppress the fire zone effectively.

This method uses significantly less water and reduces the damage following an activation, preserving homes and belongings.

Yusuf Muhammad, Co-Founder and Chief Design Officer at Plumis, explained the system’s benefits: “We designed Automist 13D to save more lives from fire and offer the best level of protection for property.

“It is the only home fire safety system that targets the fire at its source, enabling watermist to effectively cool the fire zone and suppress the fire.”

Future plans for Automist 13D

Plumis is preparing to launch the Automist 13D into the US market, marking a significant expansion for the company.

The recognition from the Edison Awards and other accolades demonstrate the technology’s capability on a global stage.
