Vantify ecosystem launches with £5m investment to support health and safety compliance

Vantify has officially launched in the UK as a new full-service compliance software ecosystem, with more than £5 million invested in the platform.

According to Vantify, the system has been developed by a team of health and safety professionals to help businesses manage workplace risk, statutory compliance, supply chains and certification.

The launch comes in response to an increase in work-related deaths.

The Health and Safety Executive reported that 138 workers were killed in 2023/24, a 12 percent rise on the previous year.

New platform integrates services from William Martin, Elogs and Prosure360

The Vantify platform brings together several brands within The GRC Group, including William Martin, Elogs and Prosure360.

It offers seven services: safety consultancy, risk management software, supply chain management, computer-aided facilities management, contractor network vetting, e-learning, and guidance on legislation and standards.

The platform is supported by a UK-based 24/7 health and safety advice team.

According to Vantify, it has been designed to help users meet legal requirements and operate more efficiently by combining risk and compliance tools into one system.

Industry professionals highlight sector pressures and demand for integrated solutions

The launch follows a study by Vantify Risk Manager (formerly Meridian), which analysed 20,000 risk assessments and found that workloads for facilities managers remain high.

Phil Jones, Chief Operations Officer at Vantify, said: “It’s shocking that we are still seeing a rise in accidents at work in some industries, but that makes it clear there is a need for better and more integrated systems to manage health and safety, and we truly believe technology is a major factor in making that happen.”

He added: “Vantify is the answer to what our clients are telling us they need – an integrated compliance system that they can see for themselves leads to improvements.”

Platform developed as part of GRC Group’s post-acquisition strategy

The launch is the first from The GRC Group since the £430 million sale of Marlowe plc’s governance, risk and compliance business to private equity firm Inflexion.

NEBOSH announces 2025 recipients of international health and safety bursary for women

NEBOSH and L’Oréal support international women pursuing safety careers

NEBOSH has announced that ten women from across six countries have been selected as recipients of the 2025 NEBOSH–L’Oréal International Bursary.

The bursary provides funding for study and assessment fees for the NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety.

The initiative, now in its third year, is a collaboration between NEBOSH and global cosmetics company L’Oréal.

It attracted over 1000 applications from women aiming to advance their careers in occupational health and safety.

The bursary is designed to increase access to formal qualifications for women interested in workplace safety.

According to NEBOSH, the ten recipients were chosen for their strong motivation to develop their skills and improve safety outcomes in their workplaces.

The winners are based in India, Nigeria, South Africa, Indonesia, Croatia and Zimbabwe.

Cleaning up contamination, with De-Wipe

Jo Taylor MBE, Director at De-Wipe, details the company’s growth into Australia, its work with UK airports, and how it is advancing firefighter decontamination 

De-Wipe has had a busy year—what have been the key achievements? 

It’s been very productive for us. De-Wipe Australia was formed and our business partners spent time in APAC promoting our products which were welcomed. We’re also supplying the aviation sector. Airports across the UK are adopting De-Wipe and following our protocol to keep personnel clean.

We designed an airside decontamination bag for anyone working around aircraft, where oils and vapours during refuelling can create carcinogens. Airports have been quick to bring this into their routine, rather than focusing only on substances from fires or training scenarios. 

We also visited Intersec in Dubai and AFAC in Australia, took part in events like ESS 2024 and UK Metals Expo 2024 and have grown to supply over 20 countries. In June, we attended a conference at Gatwick Airport.

Our Scientific expert, Dr. Megson, explained how important it is to remove contaminants from skin. That’s where we introduced our airside operations bags. Airports such as Liverpool John Lennon, Manchester and Belfast International have put them into use.  

In September, we explored the metals sector at the UK Metals Expo, which was a new step for us and then headed to ESS. We heard more about higher rates of specific cancers among firefighters. Soon after, we went to the Brandwearevent 2024 in the Netherlands. Our firefighter Dutch representatives Dewipe.NL, spoke there about why education and decontamination help protect health and safety. 

Why is decontamination so important for firefighter safety? 

Firefighters face many carcinogens when they respond to incidents and high heat can make skin more absorbent. That allows toxins to sink in faster. Over the years, many retired firefighters have shared their own battles with cancer, which shows how real this concern is.  

We’ve been raising awareness since 2018, along with people like John Lord, who also highlights these dangers. More education is still needed so everyone sees this risk clearly. The process of removing carcinogens from the skin right after exposure is one of the most effective ways to reduce the chance of serious illness. 

What does winning Outstanding Safety Solution Award at Intersec 2025 mean for De-Wipe? 

We’re excited to be recognised, especially in the Middle East, where we have a growing customer base. This has helped more people realise how dangerous contamination can be. The award shows we offer a genuine solution for a widespread problem.  

It also encourages distributors who might be hesitant to reach out. We’ve never just put a firefighter’s photo on a package—we developed something backed by research. It’s taken us years to spread the word, so having that effort acknowledged is very welcome. Winning this has opened new doors for us and confirmed that all our work to inform others has been worthwhile. 

How has De-Wipe supported the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service? 

They spent £3.2 million on better protection for their teams. That plan included our wipes, since we’re the only scientifically proven option to remove carcinogens and toxins from skin. This step helps reduce the risk of bringing dangerous substances back into stations or homes.  

We also talk a lot about higher cancer rates among firefighters and explain how the right practices can address that problem.

Scotland took this on fully by rolling out De-Wipe in fire stations across the country. It’s good to see them leading the way and showing that prioritising decontamination can make a big difference in firefighter health. 

Could you talk about your work with airports like Belfast and Manchester? 

Belfast International Airport now uses our airside kits during and after every response. They also use them in training, which helps remove contaminants linked to aircraft operations. Meanwhile, Manchester Airport worked with us to create an airside contamination pack that includes wipes, hair and body wash and equipment wash. Heat in a callout can raise skin absorption, so our main focus is removing chemicals before they embed.  

Over 80% of airport fire and rescue services in the UK use De-Wipe products. We remind them it isn’t just about personnel—it’s also important to clean their gear.

That’s why we introduced equipment wash. It can extend the lifespan of helmets and uniforms and it reduces the danger of carrying contaminants back home. 

Your expansion into Australia is a big step – what opportunities do you see in that market? 

Australian firefighters deal with major wildfires, high temperatures and smoke on a regular basis. We set up De-Wipe Australasia with a partner, Paul Bennett, who connected us with FSRA Australia as a national distributor. Some stations were already using basic on-scene wipes but needed an effective hair and body wash, plus solutions for cleaning equipment.  

Cross-contamination was a concern as well. Our products filled that gap and we’ve seen that the cooling effect of our wipes is also welcome in extreme heat. We’re pleased to help address those needs and keep firefighters there safer. 

How can SNOMED help firefighters with early diagnosis? 

Having a SNOMED card means a firefighter can tell a doctor or nurse about their higher-risk job before an exam. That prompts extra checks for illnesses more common among firefighters. Many serious conditions can go unnoticed at first and early detection can be a lifesaver. We discuss SNOMED frequently because it motivates people to get regular screenings and notice problems earlier, rather than waiting until symptoms are severe. 

What are De-Wipe’s priorities for the coming year? 

We’re focusing on equipment hygiene. You can clean the skin, though if the equipment is still coated in toxins, cross-contamination will keep happening. Our new equipment wash can be mixed with water to clean everything from helmets to fabric items and major suppliers have approved it. We’re also testing laundering solutions so stations can handle a broader range of gear. By addressing both personal and equipment decontamination, we hope more firefighters will stay safe and avoid bringing hazards home.

FSi Promat cuts carbon emissions by 50 per cent

Fire stopping specialist FSi Promat has announced that they have successfully reduced carbon emissions in a key part of its manufacturing process by 52.5 per cent by switching to a demand responsive system.

By changing the way that a high-pressure air compressor is used at the company’s Measham factory, FSi Promat has reduced the carbon emissions generated through the system by more than half.

Features of the production process

A vital part of the production process, the system supplies high pressure compressed air to machinery, used in mixing sealants and coatings.

Installing a variable speed air compressor to replace its existing fixed speed one, means that the system is only using energy when it is actively needed, vastly cutting down the energy that was required for the previous ‘always on’ system.

Switching the machine is one of a number of changes the company has made to support more environmentally efficient operations, including installing a new system to reduce the amount of low-risk wastewater it generates by approximately 550,000 litres a year, moving to sensor-based lighting and using renewable energy.

The manufacturer has also changed shift patterns to support a 30 per cent reduction in energy use by condensing the running time of machinery.

Tim Roe, Engineering and Facilities Manager at FSi Promat, said: “Since starting at FSi Promat two years ago I have been looking for ways to improve the energy efficiency of the operation to support the company’s sustainability goals – and those of the wider Etex company.

“This was something I noticed that could make an immediate impact on energy use and that would not have any effect on the manufacturing process at all. The fixed speed air compressor always needed to be on, whether it was being used or not and moving to a variable speed compressor was an obvious choice.

“Installed with minimal disruption, this is a like-for-like switch but due to only being engaged when the compressed air is needed it has seen a considerable reduction in the energy used to power it.

“While safety must remain at the forefront in passive fire protection products, FSi Promat is constantly looking for ways to support more energy efficient operations. Here a relatively simple upgrade has made a considerable impact, and we continue to look for other changes we could make.”

Managing water where it matters, with Infographics

Russell Wood, Managing Director at Infographics, explores how the Prevent + Protect platform streamlines hydrant management 

Last year, Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service (DFRS) adopted the Prevent + Protect platform from Infographics, bringing new efficiencies to hydrant management across the county. The project streamlines inspections, repairs and tracking through Infographics’ cloud-based Software as a Service (SaaS) model, enhancing resource planning and job management. 

Since merging with LearnPro Group, Infographics now operates within a broader network, expanding its reach and solutions. This includes Prevent + Protect, with its Hydrant Management module in high demand, as well as other technologies supporting fire and rescue services. 

In this interview, Russell Wood, Managing Director at Infographics and representatives from DFRS share insights into the platform’s workings, the aims of the Derbyshire project and how this solution could enhance digital capabilities in the fire and rescue sector. 

For readers new to Infographics, could you give a brief overview of the company and its main areas of expertise? 

Russell: Infographics are a specialist software manufacturer and Microsoft technology expert focused on blue light and professional services. Our largest user base is in fire and rescue and our two key products in this space are Prevent + Protect (Hydrant Management is a key module) and our specialist ERP solution, FireWatch.  

Bringing these products and our expertise together within the wider LearnPro Group is a giant step towards us becoming a powerhouse across blue light and other aligned sectors in the UK, Europe and internationally. We can offer a broader, more extensive product range tailored to UK Fire & Rescue sector needs and shaped in partnership with our extended user network, which now includes close to 100% of UK Fire & Rescue Services 

Our expanded solutions now include the Prevent + Protect, FireWatch, learnPro LMS, pdrPro competency management, XVR Simulation solutions and, as of very recently, RedKite Systems.

We will use our joint innovation resource pool to invest in new and exciting technologies to build a comprehensive ecosystem of management tools that maximise automation, AI and deliver real time data and reporting to drive FRS operations, whilst meeting emerging needs around risk prevention. 

What is the Prevent + Protect platform and what made Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service select it for their hydrant management needs? 

Russell: Prevent + Protect is our workflow-enabled case, CRM and task management software for prevention and protection. It provides a central, connected data repository for premises, contacts, organisations, hydrants, operational risk and prevention and protection. Users access the system, hosted on Microsoft Azure and provided via a SAAS model via our Web client or Mobile/Tablet App.  

The App enables (among many other things) the completion of hydrant, prevention and protection jobs using smartphones, tablets, or other suitable devices and integrates with technologies such as online/offline working, optimised route planning, cameras and GPS location. 

DFRS: We conducted a requirements analysis process and the resulting list of requirements was shared with prospective suppliers. Demonstrations were invited and prospective solutions were scored against our requirements and other evaluation criteria. The hydrants module of Prevent + Protect could meet our requirements and scored most highly of the products evaluated. 

What advantages does the platform’s Software as a Service model offer to fire and rescue services compared to traditional systems? 

Russell: Our SaaS model means we can run and manage our mission-critical software solutions – like Prevent + Protect – as a secure service on the Microsoft Azure Cloud platform, reducing complexity, storage and maintenance overhead and making upgrades faster and easier.

Blue light services also need to be able to work from anywhere and at any time – and our SaaS model supports this essential requirement.

What issues were present in Derbyshire’s previous hydrant management system and how does the Prevent + Protect platform address them? 

DFRS: Our previous on-premise hydrant management system was going end-of-life, so this was the reason for us moving to a new solution.  

The key goal for us was to successfully migrate our existing hydrant data to Prevent + Protect and be able to continue to operate core service processes relating to hydrant management, whilst also allowing us the scope to introduce new ways of working with the mobile app for recording hydrant inspections out in the field in the future. 

What practical tools and features within the platform assist with hydrant inspections, repairs and job tracking? 

Russell: Hydrant inspections, repairs – or any other job – can be scheduled, allocated, recorded and reported on using our workflow-enabled case, CRM and task management solution. The mobile app makes this functionality easily accessible and usable when teams are ‘on the move’ out in the field, with location mapping, data at their fingertips and easy recording of use, inspection and testing of hydrants. You can also plan and manage efficient hydrant inspection campaigns based on repeat periods and other attributes.  

How does the integration with Microsoft Azure and Entra ID enhance security and accessibility for users? 

Russell: Single sign-on via Microsoft Entra ID is a key enabler for ease of use and increased security, preventing users from logging in across multiple systems with multiple passwords. If they are already logged into their FRS Microsoft account via solutions like Outlook, they are taken straight into the system without any login requirement. If not, they can use those existing FRS credentials and security policies, including Multi Factor Authentication (MFA) which are managed by the FRS.  

By integrating with Microsoft Azure and Entra, we can offer a secure, cloud-hosted service to promote anytime/anywhere access with high levels of availability and resilience of data (we can go to a backup of data in any minute of time in the last 30 days). It also reduces maintenance overhead and allows us to complete upgrades using automated pipelines, making the whole process faster and easier. 

Looking forward, what role could the Prevent + Protect platform play in future digital initiatives within the fire and rescue sector? 

Russell: Prevent + Protect offers a huge opportunity to positively impact the digital future of fire and rescue, where the focus on prevention, protection and operational risk is greater than ever. One workflow-enabled case, CRM and task management solution that connects these areas and data offers significant benefits – delivering a true picture of operational risk, highlighting requirements/gaps and tracking performance across prevention and protection workstreams. 

The integrated data can also link with and provide Mobile Data Terminals with accurate information when attending an incident on hydrant locations, including status as well as wider Site Specific Risk Information (SSRI). 

It empowers mobile workers to operate from anywhere without losing access to their key work platform to complete jobs ‘in the field’. Additionally, our Prevent + Protect solution integrates with FireWatch, allowing users to connect their preventative work with response planning and management and see a holistic picture across all FRS areas.

IOSH addresses gender-specific workplace safety issues

IOSH examines PPE fit issues for women

The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) has published a blog on International Women’s Day, outlining the challenges women continue to face in workplace safety.

Olivia Barrett, TechIOSH and a health and safety consultant, highlighted ongoing concerns such as ill-fitting personal protective equipment (PPE), physical strain in manual handling tasks, and gender bias in health and safety policies.

Barrett noted that PPE such as helmets, gloves, boots, and body armour has traditionally been designed for men.

This results in women having to use equipment that is either too large or too small, which can compromise both comfort and safety.

Ill-fitting PPE increases the risk of injuries, including strains and accidents caused by discomfort.

She suggested that manufacturers and employers prioritise the development of PPE tailored for women, considering differences in body shape, weight distribution, and size.

Expanding the range of available PPE sizes and designs would ensure all workers have access to properly fitting safety equipment.

Physical demands and manual handling concerns

Manual handling tasks often do not account for physical differences between men and women, according to Barrett.

Jobs requiring heavy lifting or prolonged standing may assume uniform physical capability among all workers, placing women at greater risk of musculoskeletal injuries.

She highlighted that in sectors such as healthcare and manufacturing, women may be required to lift heavy equipment or patients without adequate support.

This increases the likelihood of back, neck, and joint injuries, especially when workplaces do not provide appropriate ergonomic solutions.

To address these risks, Barrett recommended that employers assess the physical demands of tasks and implement adjustments where necessary.

This could include mechanical lifting aids, ergonomic training, and workspaces designed to accommodate a diverse workforce.

Gender bias in workplace health and safety policies

Barrett also pointed to gender bias in workplace health and safety policies.

She noted that many policies have been shaped by male-dominated workplaces and often fail to address health concerns unique to women, such as reproductive health risks and the effects of menopause.

She explained that some workplaces do not provide adequate guidance on managing risks related to pregnancy, exposure to hazardous chemicals, or menstruation-related discomfort.

Additionally, a lack of awareness and support can leave women without clear protocols for addressing gender-specific health concerns.

Barrett called for more inclusive health and safety training and policies that recognise these issues.

She emphasised the importance of creating safety programmes that reflect workforce diversity and provide clear procedures for managing gender-specific health risks.

Addressing harassment and underrepresentation in leadership

IOSH’s blog also highlighted the impact of workplace harassment on women’s safety.

Barrett noted that women in male-dominated industries often experience higher rates of harassment, discrimination, and bullying.

She stated that these issues contribute to stress, anxiety, and burnout, affecting both mental health and job performance.

She recommended that employers establish clear anti-harassment policies, promote a culture of respect, and provide mental health support services.

Creating a work environment where employees feel safe and supported would help mitigate these challenges.

Another issue raised was the underrepresentation of women in safety leadership roles.

Barrett noted that decision-making positions in workplace safety are still largely male-dominated, which can result in policies that overlook or dismiss women’s concerns.

To improve representation, she suggested that companies encourage and support women in safety leadership roles through mentorship programmes, career development initiatives, and gender diversity in hiring.

Ensuring women’s involvement in safety decision-making would contribute to more comprehensive workplace policies.

If not handled properly, flammable gases can lead to fires, explosions, or health hazards.

What are Flammable Gasses?

Flammable gases are substances that can easily ignite and burn when mixed with air and exposed to an ignition source. 

These gases typically have a low flashpoint, meaning they ignite at relatively low temperatures, making them highly dangerous in certain conditions.

Flammable gases are used in many industries and everyday applications. 

Common examples include cooking fuel, industrial processes, chemical production, and energy generation. 

While they are incredibly useful, improper handling can lead to fires, explosions, or toxic exposure.

A flammable gas becomes hazardous when its concentration in the air reaches its flammability limits, creating an environment ripe for ignition. 

These limits are the lower explosive limit (LEL) and the upper explosive limit (UEL). 

Outside these ranges, the gas may not ignite, but within them, a spark or flame can cause severe damage.

A fatal explosion at another UK water company’s treatment plant, where four workers lost their lives, also influenced the decision to enhance safety measures.

NWG had previously relied on portable gas monitors, mobile phones, and walkie-talkies for gas detection and communication. However, these methods had limitations, including cross-sensitivity issues leading to faulty gas readings, downtime due to off-site calibrations, and ignition risks from mobile phones in biogas-rich areas.

By integrating Blackline’s technology, NWG can now monitor high-risk areas remotely and ensure real-time communication while reducing the number of devices workers need to carry.
