The International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) has named four members of the Rapid City Fire Department as recipients of the 2025 Ben Franklin Award for Valor.

According to the IAFC, firefighters Kyle Steen, Nick Jasnoch and Morgan Helton, along with Fire Chief Jason Culberson, were honoured for their actions during a vehicle extrication and high-risk gas leak.

The IAFC said the incident took place on 9 April 2024 at 10:41pm in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Emergency crews were dispatched after a vehicle, travelling at an estimated 117 miles per hour, became airborne for more than 50 feet before colliding with a three-storey apartment building.

The IAFC reported that the crash damaged the building between the second and third floors and struck the main gas line, causing a leak at explosive limits.

Triangle Fire Group has announced that its founder and chief executive, Colin Chantler, will retire at the end of August after 19 years in the role, according to the company.

The UK-based active and passive fire protection business said the change follows a multi-million-pound investment from BGF in 2022, aimed at supporting growth, mergers and acquisitions and succession planning.

It added that Chantler will remain on the company’s board as a non-executive director to support continuity and maintain the family-led heritage of the organisation.

Mark Castle, chair of Triangle, said: “Colin’s contribution has been immense. He’s been the figurehead of the business since founding it in 2006 with his brothers Nigel and Steve.

“We’re grateful he’ll remain involved as we move into the next phase.”

Incoming chief executive named

Triangle Fire stated that Marcus Wallis will take over as chief executive on 1 September.

It said Wallis is currently managing director of the South Region engineering division at H E Simm, a privately owned construction group.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has announced the results of its 2025 Board of Directors election.

According to the NFPA, the election took place during its Annual Meeting on 16 June 2025 and confirmed one new officer, one new director, one new member and the reappointment of three existing board members.

Mariana Ruiz-Temple, Oregon State Fire Marshal, has been elected to a three-year term on the Board.

The NFPA said Ruiz-Temple brings more than 30 years of experience in public safety leadership, including fire service operations, emergency management, and strategic coordination across agencies.

The organisation explained that Ruiz-Temple currently oversees Oregon’s statewide programmes aimed at reducing the loss of life and property from fires, explosions, and hazardous materials incidents.

It added that her responsibilities also include working with legislators on fire-related policy and participating in regional and national emergency response initiatives.

The NFPA said she most recently served on the Wildland Fire Mitigation and Management Commission, contributing to Congressional recommendations on wildfire prevention, response, and recovery.

Michael Snyder appointed for one-year board term

Michael Snyder has been elected by the NFPA Board of Directors to serve a one-year term.

The NFPA said Snyder began his fire service career in Aquashicola, Pennsylvania before moving to Auburn, Michigan, where he eventually became Fire Marshal in 2011.

It added that he spent 30 years at Dow Corning Corporation working in fire and life safety roles, ultimately becoming global director of safety, industrial hygiene, and loss prevention between 2008 and 2016.

Since 2016, Snyder has worked at DEKRA Process Safety.

He currently holds the role of vice president of Operational Risk Management.

The Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) has published the shortlist for its 2025 Industry Awards following a 44% increase in entries compared to 2024.

According to BESA, the awards now include 27 categories and are open to members and non-members across the UK building services sector.

The winners will be announced at a formal dinner in London on 16 October following the Association’s Annual Conference held earlier in the day.

The headline sponsor of the dinner is Mitsubishi Electric, with further category sponsorship from organisations including Tilbury Douglas, SFG20, Gratte Brothers and Ideal Heating/ACV.

BESA group events manager Charlie Ward said: “We have been completely blown away by the level of interest in this year’s awards.

“We are particularly grateful to our panel of judges who had the tough job of working through the huge volume of entries.
