Rescue Intellitech has installed its 50th Solo Rescue machine in the British Isles, with the latest unit installed at States of Jersey Fire and Rescue Service (SJFRS) headquarters in St Helier.

The machine was introduced to improve the speed, effectiveness and safety of PPE cleaning for SJFRS and to support post-incident decontamination.

Rescue Intellitech launched the Solo Rescue machine to fire services in Scandinavia in 2012.

The machine is designed to clean firefighter helmets, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), boots and gloves.

Today, the company’s machines are used by fire departments globally, with its product range also including specialist washing machines for firefighter clothing and drying cabinets for PPE.

Jersey decontamination room redesign and Solo Rescue installation

The new machine has been installed at SJFRS headquarters as part of a reconfiguration of its decontamination room, where PPE cleaning for the island’s 113 firefighters is carried out.

Station Commander Ben Elliott said: “Previously, our SCBA and other PPE items were carefully cleaned by hand.

“We recognised that by investing in the Solo Rescue machine, the process would be quicker and more efficient, as well as safer for our staff.

“Crucially, the mechanical cleaning of PPE helps to reduce exposure and contact time.

“In particular, SCBA sets are complex and tricky to clean manually, but come out visibly cleaner with the Solo Rescue.”

The installation was completed in a single day and included a demonstration and training for the team responsible for operating the machine.

A bespoke shadow board was also created to store ancillary products including brushes, gloves and detergent sprays.

Elliott added: “We have been really impressed with the customer service provided by Rescue Intellitech, from initial discussions to installation, to ongoing support.

“Our location means we can’t rely on external managed services to clean and return our kit swiftly, so we have to handle all our own cleaning on site.

“The Solo Rescue machine has helped make these cleaning processes safer and more efficient, and feedback from the staff has been very positive.”

SJFRS has also ordered two drying cabinets, a DC20 and a DC8, which will be located in an adjacent drying room.

The cabinets are designed for PPE and dry interior and exterior surfaces simultaneously without mechanical action.

Visual Alerts expands on-premise detections for safety scenarios

Motorola Solutions has announced new on-premise AI detection capabilities for its Avigilon video security platform at Intersec Dubai, which runs from 12 to 14 January.

The update introduces Visual Alerts, a feature that allows security and operational teams to define and detect site-specific visual events across large camera networks.

These detections can include scenarios such as unauthorised vehicles near shut-off valves or blocked fire exits, with alerts generated when defined conditions are observed.

The system scans live camera feeds for those events and notifies relevant staff so incidents can be assessed and responded to.

Halma acquires Italy-based Safetec in €72.5m fire and gas deal

Halma confirms Safetec acquisition in Italy

Halma has acquired Safetec, an Italy-based provider of customised fire and gas safety solutions for large-scale industrial projects.

The company said Safetec was founded in 2003 and is headquartered near Milan.

Halma said Safetec designs, engineers and delivers tailored systems for complex and high-risk industrial environments.

Purchase price, funding and business structure

Halma said the cash consideration is €72.5m, around £63m, on a cash- and debt-free basis.

It added that the acquisition will be funded from Halma’s existing facilities.

Halma said Safetec’s revenue for the 12 months to 31 December 2025 is forecast to be about €30m, around £26m.

The company said Safetec will operate as a standalone business within Halma’s Safety Sector, led by its current management team.

Safetec markets and regions cited

Halma said Safetec serves markets including power generation, oil and gas and pharmaceutical sectors.

It added that Safetec works in other highly regulated sectors where stringent safety requirements apply.

Halma said Safetec’s solutions support customers to manage risk and comply with industry standards in demanding environments.

LION adds Florida PPE provider for firefighters care

LION Safety Solutions has acquired Florida PPE Services, a verified Independent Service Provider dedicated to keeping firefighters safe and healthy, adding a second LION TotalCare location in the Southeast.

LION Safety Solutions stated that the Central Florida facility will extend its TotalCare service and gear maintenance programmes to a wider customer base in the state and across the region.

The acquisition adds several of Central Florida’s largest departments to the company’s TotalCare client base.

The company said the new site is intended to help meet rising demand in Florida and the wider Southeast.

Florida PPE owner joins leadership team

LION Safety Solutions said Florida PPE Services President and owner Tonya Herbert will join its leadership team as Vice President of Government Relations and Advocacy as part of the acquisition.

Herbert has started multiple companies focused on helping firefighters clean their gear and themselves.

The company said its TotalCare facilities operate across the United States and provide cleaning, inspections and repairs for firefighter gear.

It added that LION Safety Solutions also provides digital and live-fire training solutions, along with PPE rental gear for fire departments and academies.

Herbert said: “This partnership is deeply personal to me.

“For years, my work has been driven by one goal: protecting firefighters from the long-term health risks of the job.

“LION TotalCare shares that commitment, not just in words, but in action, and together we can raise the standard for how the fire service cares for its people.”

Advanced launches “powerful” smoke control system

UK-based fire detection specialist Advanced has launched SmokeGo, a new smoke control system designed to provide compliant smoke management through Control & Indicating Equipment (CIE).

The launch comes amid increased scrutiny of smoke control performance and compliance across the UK construction and fire safety sectors, particularly in complex and high-risk buildings.

Approved to EN 54 Parts 2 and 4, SmokeGo is designed to comply with ISO 21927-9 and BS 7346-8 standards.

The system, available for the UK market, integrates with Advanced’s MxPro 5 fire panels, enabling both automatic and manual control of fans and dampers.

SmokeGo supports up to 15 fan and damper switch cards per P-Bus and can be scaled further using PENN or additional panels, making it suitable for projects of varying sizes.

Each switch card can control up to six individual fans and dampers, allowing flexible smoke compartment management and manual override options.

The control system has been designed to support faster configuration and commissioning. Configuration is handled via Advanced’s software, which pre-allocates inputs and outputs for fan and damper control and automatically applies required feedback delays, simplifying system setup.

Additional features include cascade mode to manage smoke spread across compartments, automatic stairwell pressurisation, post-alarm purge functions, and interlocks to ensure dampers are open before fans are activated, helping to prevent duct over-pressurisation.

Magirus eyes further acquisitions, aims to double revenue

Germany-headquartered fire engine manufacturer Magirus has said that it is evaluating further acquisitions, with the aim of enhancing quality and delivery speed.

The company, which said it entered 2026 “stronger than ever” thanks to a strong order backlog, revealed that it could target specialised vehicle manufacturers, workshops or distribution partners.

That would follow its purchase of Achleitner Fahrzeugbau, an Austrian firm specialising in special-purpose vehicles, in October 2025.

Fatmir Veselaj, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Magirus, said: “The expansion of our product portfolio through the acquisition of Achleitner, the stabilisation of our processes and the introduction of a platform‑based organisation focused on project execution ensure Magirus’ operational excellence in the long term.

Magirus revenue targets for 2030

In 2025, Magirus said it managed to cut delivery times, increase operational efficiency, and realign its sales team.

Meanwhile, the company also unveiled a plan to double revenue by 2030. According to Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Mathias Scholz, the success of 2025 has positioned the company “financially and structurally to achieve sustainable growth in a challenging market environment.”

MSA Safety said: “We’d like to share that our Remote Monitoring and Notifications solution for Fixed Gas and Flame Detection is now available in EMEA.

“Many industrial facilities operate continuously, and staying connected to safety systems can help teams act promptly when issues arise.

Remote access via MSA Grid

MSA Safety said the FieldServer gateways are intended to keep users connected to fixed gas and flame detection devices when they are away from a facility.

MSA Safety described its Equipment Remote Monitoring and Notifications solutions as designed to integrate into many environments and provide scalable insight across equipment and processes.

The company said users can access customised insight or more detailed telemetry and data across a single facility or process, or across a wide geography.

MSA Safety said each fixed gas and flame detection FieldServer is pre-configured with its fixed gas and flame detection products before delivery to enable cloud communications to one or many MSA products.

Supported detectors and control equipment

MSA Safety said the pre-configured FieldServer can enable cloud communications for gas and flame detectors including the General Monitors S5000, Observer i and Senscient ELDS.

The company said the same set-up supports IR5500, FL5000, FL4000H and FL500 or FL500-H2.

MSA Safety said the Ultima X5000 can connect via 4-20mA, with 4-20mA available only in a NEMA 4 enclosure.

For controllers and monitors, the company said the list includes SENTRY io, SupremaTouch, 9010 or 9020 SIL and GasGard XL.

MSA Safety said the FieldServer also supports Chillgard 5000 and Chillgard 5000 Ammonia.

The company said the fixed gas and flame detection FieldServer can also be configured to support third-party equipment with native Modbus or BACnet connectivity.

MSA Safety said hazardous gas applications require an additional approved enclosure where the FieldServer is planned for that use.

Cybersecurity and compliance features

MSA Safety said Grid FieldServer Manager provides secure remote connectivity with fixed gas and flame detection FieldServers so users can configure, update and support connected industrial devices.

The company said connected devices can also be integrated with business applications and other cloud-based services.

MSA Safety said users can remotely access and monitor fixed gas and flame detection FieldServers via Grid FieldVEU and display up to 15 data points per device.

On security controls, the company said FieldSafe is a feature set added to every FieldServer gateway, covering local hardware and the MSA Grid FieldServer Manager application.

MSA Safety said gateway to internet browser and gateway to MSA Grid connections are secured with HTTPS using TLS or SSL.

The company said it has partnered with Amazon Web Services for MSA Grid, citing security features available through AWS.

MSA Safety said all FieldServer devices are designed to be compliant with California State Bill 327.

The company said FieldSafe includes three security levels and user profiles, and that its FieldServer gateways and MSA Grid have passed third-party security penetration testing.

What Makes a Class K Fire Extinguisher Unique

Standard Foam or Powder Extinguishers Aren’t Effective

Deep fryer oil can reach temperatures far above the ignition point of other flammable liquids.

A regular dry chemical extinguisher might knock down the flames briefly, but it does not cool the oil sufficiently. 

The oil can remain hot enough to reignite on its own a moment later.

This is essentially a ticking time bomb of fire. 

Also, dry chemical agents (like monoammonium phosphate powders) can form a crust on top of the oil that looks like it’s out, while underneath the oil is still burning or hot. 

When that crust is disturbed or if heat builds up again, the fire can flash back. 

Because they lack the cooling and smothering foam effect, normal Class B/C extinguishers often fail to prevent re-ignition of grease fires.

Co₂ (Carbon Dioxide) Extinguishers Aren’t Suitable

A CO₂ extinguisher fights fire by flooding the area with carbon dioxide to displace oxygen and cool the flames. 

However, with a Class K fire, CO₂ will only cool the surface of the oil while the deeper oil remains extremely hot. 

Once the CO₂ gas dissipates, the oxygen returns and the still-hot oil can reignite itself. 

Moreover, the high-pressure discharge from a CO₂ extinguisher can splatter the burning oil around, potentially spreading the fire to new areas. 

Thus, CO₂ might temporarily appear to put out a grease fire, but the fire is very likely to come roaring back.

How to Use a K Class Fire Extinguisher

If a cooking oil fire breaks out and it’s safe for you to attempt extinguishing it, you should follow proper steps to use the Class K fire extinguisher. 

Using this extinguisher is similar to using any portable extinguisher, but there are a few additional considerations for grease fires. 

Always remember the acronym PASS:

  • Pull
  • Aim
  • Squeeze
  • Sweep

This acronym outlines the basic steps for knowing how to use a fire extinguisher:

  • Pull the safety pin out of the extinguisher’s handle. This pin prevents accidental discharge; pulling it will unlock the handle.
  • Aim the nozzle or hose at the base of the fire, not at the flames. In a grease fire, that means aim where the oil is burning (the surface of the oil). You want to hit the burning oil directly with the extinguishing agent.
  • Squeeze the handle slowly and evenly. This will start the flow of the wet chemical agent. Class K extinguishers are typically designed to discharge in a controlled, gentle spray to avoid splashing the oil.
  • Sweep the nozzle from side to side across the base of the fire while continuing to aim at the oil. Cover the entire area that’s on fire with the mist, and keep spraying until the flames are completely out.

Keeping Safe

While performing these steps, maintain a safe distance. 

It’s recommended to start about 8 to 10 feet (roughly 3 metres) back from the fire and move forward carefully as the flames subside. 

Holding the extinguisher upright, direct the spray low and evenly over the burning oil. 

The wet chemical will create a foamy layer as it contacts the hot grease. 

Make sure to coat the whole surface of the burning oil with this foam. 

This ensures that the fire is fully smothered and cooled. 

Class K extinguishers are engineered to discharge at a lower pressure than other types precisely to avoid splattering the burning oil. 

However, a steady hand control is important to keep the spray directed where it’s needed.

As you fight the fire with the extinguisher, avoid getting too close to splattering grease and never attempt to carry a burning pan outside.

Let the extinguisher do the work of dousing the flames. 

Keep discharging the agent until you’re absolutely sure the fire is out. 

After Extinguishing the Fire

After the flames appear to be extinguished, watch the area closely for a minute or two in case of re-ignition. 

The wet chemical foam should prevent the oil from reigniting, but it’s wise to be vigilant. 

Once everything is under control, ventilate the area if possible. 

Remember to call the fire brigade or emergency services if the fire was significant or if there’s any doubt it might flare up again. 

Also, any used extinguisher will need to be recharged or replaced promptly.

Suppression Systems

If the kitchen has an automatic hood fire suppression system, activate that first or ensure it has activated before using the portable extinguisher. 

The hood system will release its own suppressing agent and often shut off the heat source to the cooking equipment. 

This reduces the intensity of the fire and prevents new fuel from feeding it, making it safer and more effective when you follow up with the handheld Class K extinguisher.

Sonic Fire Tech said its first installations are underway in Los Angeles, Santa Barbara and Lake Tahoe.

The company said it has received hundreds of homeowner requests for demonstrations.

Personal experience and commercialisation plans

Remington Hotchkis, Chief Commercialization Officer, said: “Wildfire danger isn’t abstract for me, it’s personal.

“When my former home in Altadena burned in the Los Angeles fires earlier this year, I saw firsthand that it wasn’t the wall of flame that destroyed homes, it was the embers.

“In that moment I realized that this part of the global wildfire crisis is solvable.”

Sonic Fire Tech said Hotchkis developed a commercialisation plan through an MIT entrepreneurship competition and later joined forces with Geoff Bruder and Sonic Fire Tech to bring the technology to homeowners in California.

Design, power resilience and app controls

Sonic Fire Tech said the system can be installed with concealed ducting through gutters or attics.

The company said the system is designed to operate off grid during power outages via backup batteries.

Sonic Fire Tech said homeowners can receive alerts and use remote control through the Sonic Alert App.

California demo events start in November

Sonic Fire Tech said community demo events begin in November across California.

The company said homeowners, homeowners’ associations and builders can sign up to reserve a live demonstration via its website.

San Francisco Fire Department adopts non-PFAS turnout gear across fleet

San Francisco completes fleetwide non-PFAS gear transition with Fire-Dex

The San Francisco Fire Department (SFFD) has become the largest fire department in the United States to transition its entire fleet to non-PFAS turnout gear, according to Fire-Dex.

Fire-Dex said the department is scheduled to receive 1,100 sets of non-PFAS turnout gear by Wednesday 31 December 2025, providing one set for every frontline suppression member.

Fire-Dex said the first shipment was delivered in December 2025.

Fire-Dex said the purchase was funded in part through a $2.35 million Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and matching funds from the department.

non-PFAS rollout follows city ordinance

Fire-Dex said the transition follows an ordinance passed in May 2024 that made San Francisco the first city in the country to ban the use of PFAS chemicals in firefighters’ turnout gear.

Fire-Dex said the ordinance set a deadline of Monday 30 June 2026 for the department to complete the switch.

Fire-Dex said department officials moved to procure and test potential options and selected the final gear ahead of that deadline.

Fire-Dex said San Francisco covers 49 square miles and is the fourth largest city in California.

Fire-Dex said the San Francisco Fire Department is the 10th largest fire department in the United States and serves an estimated 1.5 million people.

Fire-Dex said the department operates 45 stations and responds to an average of 180,000 annual emergency calls.

Testing, UL certification and NFPA standards

Fire-Dex said the selected gear went through performance and safety testing, including a 90-day wear trial with 50 firefighters.

Fire-Dex said the trial included live fire training at the San Francisco Division of Training burn rooms.

Fire-Dex said the turnout gear is UL certified.

Fire-Dex said it meets the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1971-2018 and 1971-2025 standards.

Fire-Dex said non-fluorinated fabrics have existed for turnout gear outer shells and thermal liners, while moisture barrier alternatives remained a technical challenge.

Moisture barrier and supply chain partners

Fire-Dex said Milliken & Company introduced Milliken Assure in October 2024 as a non-PFAS, non-halogenated flame-resistant moisture barrier.

Fire-Dex said this enabled Fire-Dex to provide a solution that met the department’s requirements.
