Fire-Dex introduces AI sizing tool for turnout gear

Fire-Dex has launched an artificial intelligence-driven tool called the Virtual Sizer to improve the accuracy and efficiency of firefighter turnout gear fittings in the United States.

According to Fire-Dex, the Virtual Sizer uses AI algorithms to calculate user measurements based on basic inputs including height, weight and shoe size.

The company reported that over 6,500 entries have already been processed through the tool.

Todd Herring, Vice President of Product Innovation and Strategy at Fire-Dex, said: “The response has been incredible. Firefighters are getting gear that fits better, faster. We’ve actually been testing and refining this technology internally for over five years to ensure accuracy before making it widely available.”

Tool aims to reduce errors caused by manual sizing

Fire-Dex stated that the Virtual Sizer removes the need for traditional sizing gear or tape measures, addressing potential inconsistencies that occur through manual measuring.

The company said the system is backed by more than 150 million AI-generated digital twins and informed by firefighter-specific data.

Herring said: “The technology is backed by over 150 million AI-generated digital twins and validated through extensive firefighter-specific data. It’s precise, tested and constantly improving with every use—meaning the more firefighters use it, the smarter and more accurate it becomes.”

According to Fire-Dex, the Virtual Sizer has undergone testing with fire departments across the United States and has shown results comparable to conventional sizing methods.

Memphis Fire uses Virtual Sizer to onboard out-of-state recruits

The City of Memphis Fire Department in Tennessee has used the Virtual Sizer to support the sizing of new recruits, especially those located outside of the region.

Keith James, Division Chief of Logistical Services at Memphis Fire, said the department has used the tool to size between 25 and 30 recruits from outside the local area.

James said: “It can be difficult for them to fly or drive in just for processing and fittings, especially when we’re trying to get gear ordered quickly so it arrives during class.”

He added: “We tested it first with a few people locally and found the output matched our sizing. That gave us the comfort level to roll it out further.”

Time-saving and accuracy benefits highlighted

According to Fire-Dex, the tool helps departments reduce delays and avoid the need for rework or resizing, while helping ensure that gear fits properly.

James said the implementation of the Virtual Sizer at Memphis Fire was straightforward and effective, with the department reporting no issues or resizing needs after deployment.

Herring said: “Our AI tool streamlines ordering, but the real winners here are the firefighters. The process is faster, but more importantly, emergency responders end up with gear that fits well and lets them focus on the job.”

Global customer growth reported in fire hazmat monitoring

Blackline Safety has reported a 175 percent increase in the number of fire hazmat customers using its connected personal and area monitors worldwide over the past year.

According to Blackline Safety, customer numbers grew from 127 to 350 over the last 12 months.

The company stated that thousands of users are now operating its monitoring solutions across North America, Europe, the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand.

The company attributed this growth to increased demand among fire and hazmat teams for tools that provide enhanced monitoring and real-time data access during high-risk operations.

Blackline stated that its cloud-connected devices allow remote tracking of personnel safety conditions and support faster response decisions.

NewEXO 8 Gamma monitors set for initial shipment

Blackline Safety has announced that the first shipments of its EXO 8 Gamma area monitors will begin this month.

The monitor is capable of detecting gamma radiation in addition to up to eight gases simultaneously.

According to Blackline, EXO 8 is the only portable area monitor with direct-to-cloud capability and simultaneous gas and gamma detection features.

Doug Mayer, Fire Hazmat Business Development Specialist at Blackline Safety, said: “EXO 8’s gamma detection capability is a game-changer for fire and hazmat teams — not only in emergency response, but also in public event monitoring.”

Mayer added: “From gas leaks and chemical spill incidents of all kinds, and now gamma radiation, we’ve reimagined safety solutions to help responders deploy equipment faster, get more gas exposure information, and share data for real-time visibility.”

Fire teams adopt wider range of connected safety tools

In addition to the EXO 8 Gamma, Blackline Safety reported ongoing uptake of its broader range of connected safety technologies by fire-hazmat teams.

These include G7 personal gas detectors featuring cellular and satellite connectivity, two-way voice communication, fall and no-motion alerts, and automatic data logging.

The G6 single gas detector, offering real-time connectivity and emergency SOS functions, is also in use.

Fire departments are also using Blackline Live, the company’s cloud-based platform that provides real-time information on personnel location, gas exposures and device status from any internet-connected device.

MSA Cairns helmet giveaway for US volunteer firefighters open through 2025

MSA Cairns and NVFC launch 2025 fire helmet giveaway programme

The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) has reported that MSA Safety is continuing its collaboration with the organisation by offering four MSA Cairns 1836 Fire Helmets to active volunteer firefighters in the United States during 2025.

NVFC members can now enter the first of four giveaway periods, which runs until 30 April.

Additional entry windows are planned for June, August and November.

To qualify, participants must be active volunteer firefighters in the United States and members of the NVFC.

Only one entry is permitted per member during each giveaway period.

Recipients will be randomly selected following each entry window.

Helmet design focused on cleanability, comfort and face protection

The MSA Cairns 1836 Fire Helmet includes a range of features intended to meet operational needs of today’s fire service.

The helmet includes a low ride height, customisable fit and an expanded pivoting ratchet system designed to fit 95% of firefighters.

It can also be disassembled without tools, enabling easier cleaning and inspection.

It also includes a Defender Visor designed to deploy over various face sizes and eyewear.

It stows inside the helmet and can be operated while wearing gloves.

Fire helmets turned into art for auction, funding Fire Aid’s international programmes

UK artists reimagine decommissioned helmets for Fire Aid charity auction

A group of 20 artists from across the UK have customised decommissioned fire helmets to raise funds for Fire Aid.

As reported by Fire Aid, the initiative features helmets that were originally manufactured by MSA and have been retired from service.

The items were repurposed as art pieces and will be sold through a public auction launched on 26 March 2025 and closes on 10 April.

Artists involved include street artists, illustrators, sculptors and serving firefighters.

Each was given a helmet and full creative control to produce a one-off artwork.

Designs vary from graphic statements to detailed hand-painted scenes reflecting the work of firefighters and the purpose of international aid.

The helmets used in the campaign include a variety of standard issue and officer models, giving each piece a distinct visual and historical character.

According to Fire Aid, each helmet was selected for its operational history and then transformed through artistic interpretation.

This approach was intended to preserve the object’s symbolic link to firefighting, while presenting it in a new form to appeal to collectors and supporters.

The charity said that the project not only aimed to reuse items destined for disposal, but also to promote awareness of global fire service needs.

Auction proceeds to support Fire Aid programmes

All proceeds from the auction will support Fire Aid’s work providing equipment, training and support to under-resourced fire services around the world.

David O’Neill MBE, Chair of Fire Aid, said: “This project aims to repurpose items meant for disposal.

Fit for purpose, fit for duty, with Fire-Dex

There’s no blueprint for fighting wildfires, much less the countless other emergencies firefighters must respond to. Recently, we’ve witnessed how quickly California’s Santa Ana winds can turn a small blaze into a raging inferno. Conditions and circumstances change in an instant—fires suddenly explode in size, while rescue missions can stretch for hours and miles, and firefighters must adapt on the fly. 

Simply put, daily workloads have no quick in and out or predictability. Responders must be ready to endure exhausting shifts, sometimes for days at a time, haul heavy gear over rugged terrain, or manage all the unknowns that may accompany a motor vehicle accident (MVA). 

In fact, NFPA statistics show that all firefighters are taking more calls than ever, including hazardous materials and hazardous conditions.

That’s why PPE manufacturers like Fire-Dex are designing gear to help ease stress on the fireground and beyond. Advances in material science, smarter designs and a changing philosophy are creating the next generation of apparel that’s designed to work with—not against—first responders and keep them in the fight longer. 

Rethinking PPE  

For a long time, many firefighters have worn the same PPE for every call. That usually means full turnouts for everything from a structural fire to an MVA in the July sun. But increasingly, research is revealing the downside of this thinking, making way for an approach that calls for the right gear for the right call.  

The shift is long overdue. While structural fire incidents have dropped significantly over the past 40 years, EMS calls have surged by 421%, and all other calls have nearly tripled according to the NFPA. Yet firefighters are still expected to wear turnouts for non-fire emergencies where no thermal protection is needed.  

Turnouts are great when you need them—but wearing them all day? That’s just added weight and stress on your body. Heat stress and overexertion are the top causes of firefighter line-of-duty-deaths (LODDs), and sometimes, lighter gear is the smarter choice.

Alternative PPE provides the right level of protection for most calls while preventing unnecessary fatigue and keeping structural gear fresh for when it’s truly needed. 

There’s also the issue of contamination. Firefighters don’t just fight fires—they bring part of them back. Moving between the scene, the truck, and the station in the same gear means contaminants can come along for the ride.

Studies show that air pollution inside fire stations poses significant risks, especially in living quarters and engine bays where gear and equipment are stored.

Pollutants can also concentrate inside fire trucks. Alternative PPE, as an option for non-fire calls, can help mitigate these risks by reducing the likelihood of cross-contamination. 

The alternative PPE advantage 

Not all PPE is created equal—especially when it comes to alternative gear. It’s not just about making something lighter; it has to be built to perform. Firefighters don’t just face one type of hazard. Even on non-fire calls, there’s still heat, abrasion and unexpected risks.  

That’s where strategic material selection comes in. The best alternative PPE doesn’t overload firefighters with unnecessary bulk, but it also doesn’t skimp on protection where it’s needed.

It’s a delicate balance: Use materials that provide the right protection for the right call, without adding extra bulk that weighs you down. Without the need for the heaviest materials, firefighters can choose PPE that breathes better and lets cool air circulate around the body. 

Regulating core body temperature is essential for reducing heat stress and fatigue, both of which can significantly impact a person’s cognitive function and reaction time. When body temperature rises, the body naturally cools itself through evaporative heat loss—but traditional turnout gear can trap sweat, preventing proper heat dissipation. 

One suit, many uses 

Not every emergency is a structure fire, and not every call should require hauling around full turnouts. In response, the market offers many multipurpose options like Fire-Dex’s TECGEN51 Multipurpose PPE. As a two-piece or coverall, it’s dual-certified to NFPA 1951 (technical rescue) and 1977 (wildland performance) for non-fire calls like MVAs, electrical issues and search and rescue missions—it’s lightweight, breathable and built to move. 

The reason is the TECGEN fiber, an inherently flame-resistant material with a high-density carbon shell and a flexible core. That combination provides increased durability over typical carbon-based fibers.

This technology enables the development of fabrics that simultaneously offer high levels of thermal protection (TPP) and breathability (THL). That’s to say, there’s less trade-off between the two, making a multipurpose garment more viable and effective than ever. 

Most people don’t think twice about sweat, but firefighters don’t have that luxury. Battalion Chief Andy Starnes of Insight Training warns that wearing turnouts unnecessarily—especially in hot, humid conditions—can cause serious issues: “It makes managing moisture critical because drenched gear isn’t just annoying—it’s dangerous.

Exhaustion doesn’t happen all at once—it builds until every move in heavy, sweat-soaked gear feels like a fight. And that’s a cycle no firefighter wants to be stuck in.”

Beyond the materials, design choices affect the safety and useability of gear. For example, multipurpose PPE might feature a bi-wing back design in the jacket that improves shoulder and arm mobility, so it’s easier to climb and maneuver in tight spaces without feeling restricted.

As another example, a Mandarin-style collar with a throat closure might be used to prevent debris from getting inside the jacket, but without the bulk and discomfort of traditional collars. 

Even little changes can make a big difference. Pant legs, for instance, might seem a trivial consideration, but features like oversized legs with long zipper bottoms can make it much easier to pull the pants over your boots without struggling. In all cases, the goal is to help wearers stay focused on their gear instead of fighting it. 

With advances in alternative PPE across the fire industry, achieving the right level of protection and mobility without the strain of full turnouts is possible. Of course, for many fire departments, alternative PPE can seem like a large investment in an entirely new class of gear. The financials, however, are not to be feared. The use of multipurpose PPE can greatly extend the useful life of pricier turnouts by letting them hang out at the station when non-fire calls come in. Furthermore, manufacturers may bundle gear like turnouts, alternative PPE and accessories at a discount to customers. 

Firefighters give everything they’ve got to the job. Their gear should give just as much back. The latest PPE innovations can help keep them safer, cooler and more comfortable. Ask your specialist for a cost analysis—you could be looking at additional years before you need structural replacements again.

IOSH addresses gender-specific workplace safety issues

IOSH examines PPE fit issues for women

The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) has published a blog on International Women’s Day, outlining the challenges women continue to face in workplace safety.

Olivia Barrett, TechIOSH and a health and safety consultant, highlighted ongoing concerns such as ill-fitting personal protective equipment (PPE), physical strain in manual handling tasks, and gender bias in health and safety policies.

Barrett noted that PPE such as helmets, gloves, boots, and body armour has traditionally been designed for men.

This results in women having to use equipment that is either too large or too small, which can compromise both comfort and safety.

Ill-fitting PPE increases the risk of injuries, including strains and accidents caused by discomfort.

She suggested that manufacturers and employers prioritise the development of PPE tailored for women, considering differences in body shape, weight distribution, and size.

Expanding the range of available PPE sizes and designs would ensure all workers have access to properly fitting safety equipment.

Physical demands and manual handling concerns

Manual handling tasks often do not account for physical differences between men and women, according to Barrett.

Jobs requiring heavy lifting or prolonged standing may assume uniform physical capability among all workers, placing women at greater risk of musculoskeletal injuries.

She highlighted that in sectors such as healthcare and manufacturing, women may be required to lift heavy equipment or patients without adequate support.

This increases the likelihood of back, neck, and joint injuries, especially when workplaces do not provide appropriate ergonomic solutions.

To address these risks, Barrett recommended that employers assess the physical demands of tasks and implement adjustments where necessary.

This could include mechanical lifting aids, ergonomic training, and workspaces designed to accommodate a diverse workforce.

Gender bias in workplace health and safety policies

Barrett also pointed to gender bias in workplace health and safety policies.

She noted that many policies have been shaped by male-dominated workplaces and often fail to address health concerns unique to women, such as reproductive health risks and the effects of menopause.

She explained that some workplaces do not provide adequate guidance on managing risks related to pregnancy, exposure to hazardous chemicals, or menstruation-related discomfort.

Additionally, a lack of awareness and support can leave women without clear protocols for addressing gender-specific health concerns.

Barrett called for more inclusive health and safety training and policies that recognise these issues.

She emphasised the importance of creating safety programmes that reflect workforce diversity and provide clear procedures for managing gender-specific health risks.

Addressing harassment and underrepresentation in leadership

IOSH’s blog also highlighted the impact of workplace harassment on women’s safety.

Barrett noted that women in male-dominated industries often experience higher rates of harassment, discrimination, and bullying.

She stated that these issues contribute to stress, anxiety, and burnout, affecting both mental health and job performance.

She recommended that employers establish clear anti-harassment policies, promote a culture of respect, and provide mental health support services.

Creating a work environment where employees feel safe and supported would help mitigate these challenges.

Another issue raised was the underrepresentation of women in safety leadership roles.

Barrett noted that decision-making positions in workplace safety are still largely male-dominated, which can result in policies that overlook or dismiss women’s concerns.

Northumbrian Water Group (NWG) has chosen Blackline Safety’s connected safety technology to enhance worker protection at two of its water treatment sites in the UK.

The company, which supplies water and wastewater treatment services to nearly five million people across northeast and southeast England, is the eighth UK water company to implement Blackline’s safety devices.

Blackline’s cloud-connected G7c personal gas wearable and EXO area monitor will be used to consolidate gas detection, communication, and lone worker connectivity into a single system.

Safety concerns drive adoption of connected safety devices

NWG’s decision to invest in Blackline Safety technology follows industry-wide concerns about worker exposure to hazardous gases, contaminated water, combustible gas explosions, and the risks associated with lone work and confined space entry.

A fatal explosion at another UK water company’s treatment plant, where four workers lost their lives, also influenced the decision to enhance safety measures.

Dan Woodward, Process Safety Business Partner at NWG, said: “Feedback we were getting from the team on-site was that they just want to do their jobs but had too many devices, apps and things to think about, and anything we could do to simplify the process would be beneficial for everyone.”

Limitations of previous safety equipment

NWG had previously relied on portable gas monitors, mobile phones, and walkie-talkies for gas detection and communication. However, these methods had limitations, including cross-sensitivity issues leading to faulty gas readings, downtime due to off-site calibrations, and ignition risks from mobile phones in biogas-rich areas.

By integrating Blackline’s technology, NWG can now monitor high-risk areas remotely and ensure real-time communication while reducing the number of devices workers need to carry.

Early benefits of Blackline’s safety system

NWG has already identified previously undetected hazards using the new system. The EXO monitor recently detected gas levels reaching 75% of the explosive limit, triggering an immediate ‘stop work’ order and evacuation.

Additionally, the G7 wearables have helped improve worker communication and safety, with push-to-talk functionality enabling walkie-talkie-style communication. The devices also remain operational in underground environments where mobile signals are weak.

EU shipowners must upgrade firefighting suits to Level 2 by June 2025

Regulatory changes require new firefighting suit standards

Shipowners and operators of EU-flagged vessels must ensure that all new firefighting suits meet enhanced protection standards by June 2025, according to VIKING Life-Saving Equipment.

The updated Marine Equipment Directive (MED) regulations (EU) 2024/1975 mandate that new firefighting suits comply with ‘Level 2’ standards, which provide enhanced protection against heat, water penetration, and breathability.

These requirements build on rules introduced in August 2024, which already require suits to be tested to EN469:2020 standards.

Existing ‘Level 1’ firefighting suits may remain in use until they are no longer fit for service.

However, once replaced, they must meet the Level 2 standard.

Enhanced protection requirements for firefighting suits

The Level 2 classification introduces additional safety measures designed for high-risk firefighting scenarios.

These include improved resistance to radiant and convective heat (X2), enhanced water penetration protection (Y2), and increased breathability (Z2).

The Y2 classification has been introduced to address rising concerns over electrical fires and high-volume water use in enclosed spaces.

Firefighting suits with Y2 protection include an extra moisture barrier to guard against steam burns and chemical exposure.

“There has been widespread acknowledgement that seafarers need more protection, including from electric vehicle and battery fires, and in enclosed spaces,” said Charlotte Nielsen, Product Manager PPE at VIKING Life-Saving Equipment.

Compliance checks advised for shipowners

To avoid potential issues with Port State Control inspections, shipowners should confirm that all new firefighting suits meet the Level 2 requirements at the time of purchase.

VIKING recommends fleet managers conduct risk assessments on their firefighting gear and update each vessel’s Safety Management System (SMS) to reflect the new standards.

“We recommend customers conduct risk assessments on the condition and certification of suits and update each vessel’s Safety Management System (SMS),” Nielsen added.

International impact of EU firefighting regulations

VIKING has been supplying Level 2 marine firefighting suits since 2016, with its existing models already meeting X2 and Z2 requirements.

With the new MED regulations coming into force, the company expects more non-EU countries to adopt similar standards.

The UK has already updated its legislation to reflect Y2 requirements.

VIKING has reported increased demand for its YouSafe Torch firefighting suit, which meets the Level 2 EN469:2020 standard.

“As a one-stop shop for marine life-saving equipment, we respond well ahead of the regulators, with a strong lead provided by the products we develop for land-based firefighting professionals,” Nielsen said.
