Bronto Skylift launches North America’s tallest fire fighting aerial

While the industrial access has been using large truck-mounted aerial platforms for wind turbines and such for a long time, the fire and rescue aerials have been limited to the heights of about 100-135ft.

North America fire services commonly use aerial ladders, that tend to have lower heights than the articulated aerial platforms with a solid steel boom as the main structure. Another limiting factor has perhaps been the size of larger, over 200-foot aerials, that can be bulky and difficult to navigate through ordinary city streets.

Bronto Skylift 230-foot articulated aerial platform, the Bronto F230RPX, is set to shakeup the aerial access market. The 230ft-working height is equivalent to 20 floors, and the aerial is compactly mounted on a Mack chassis. The previous maximum height of North American aerials, 135ft, corresponds to about 11 floors. In other words, the F230RPX enables nine floors more vertical reach for fire departments all over North America.

While there is a big increase to the operational rescue height, the reach can be seen in many different ways. Also the horizontal reach and so called up-and-over are much improved from what has traditionally been offered. Maximum horizontal reach is 105ft, while most of previous models offer less than 90ft. The capability to reach up and over for example the parapet walls and lower roofs is 34ft. Reach below grade from river banks and bridges is about 20ft.

The first unit was developed, designed, built and delivered in collaboration with 1200 Degrees, an experienced Bronto Skylift partner in Canada. 1200 Degrees will be the local service provider making sure the unit remains safe and ready to serve during the years to come

Clifton firefighters launch statewide gear collection for counterparts in Ukraine

Firefighters in Clifton, North Jersey have started a statewide gear collection drive to help their counterparts in Ukraine. 

Pat Trentacost, fire chief, Passaic said: “What I’m seeing is nothing less than miraculous as they’re working to remove victims with limited resources, regardless of the potential of being killed by Russian attack.”

Clifton’s fire chief Frank Prezioso reached out to enlist his help to collect surplus fire equipment for Ukraine’s fire service. Trentacost had seen photos of firetrucks and apparatus buried in rubble after Russian attacks.

Prezioso said the idea came from third-year Clifton firefighter Oleg Skachko, who emigrated from Ukraine when he was 14.

Skachko’s first thought was to gather personal protection equipment, also known as turnout gear, for Ukraine’s firefighters. He had been contacted by friends in Ukraine who knew he was a firefighter, and their requests resonated, first with him and later with his peers. 

In Ukraine, Skachko lived next to a fire station and when he moved to the US in 2022, he lived just down street from a Paterson fire station. He wanted to be a firefighter for as long as he could remember, he told NorthJersey.com

Clifton is taking the lead in organising the effort to collect equipment and has reached out to fire departments across the region. The aim is to get departments from around New Jersey to contribute equipment to help their firefighters in Ukraine. 

The worry is that as the war continues and resources are destroyed, firefighters would be forced to work in their street clothes.  

Passaic discovered that neck collars, backboards, bandages and other supplies would soon be in high demand. In terms of shipping, the heavy, bulky equipment is being shipped to nearby areas which will then be transported to Ukraine. This is because several airports in Ukraine were targeted by Russians forces early on in the invasion.  

Global fire extinguishers market to reach $7.1bn by 2026

The fire extinguisher market is set to reach US$7.1bn by 2026, according to a new study published by Global Industry Analysts Inc., (GIA). The report, titled “Fire Extinguishers – Global Market Trajectory & Analytics, presents fresh perspectives on opportunities and challenges in a significantly transformed post Covid-19 marketplace.

Improving global GDP, resurgence in remodeling and renovation activity in developed economies, steady rise in new constructions in emerging markets, and stricter law enforcements are driving growth in the market.

Along with their expiration date, the existence of international, national, or local building regulations, laws, and codes implies that some of the fire extinguishers must be replaced annually, which generates enough demand to ensure the industry’s stability.

Additional opportunities generated by the demand for fire suppression technologies and other proactive fire management systems, hold potential for the industry’s growth. Although the construction industry remains the primary end-use sector for fire extinguishers, growth is forecast to improve from expanding applications in automobiles, military vehicles, and aircrafts. Currently, the extensively used fire extinguisher type is the multiple use dry chemical, which is most efficient on class A, class B and class C fires. CO2 fire extinguishers, which can be deployed on Class A fires, put out fire by removing oxygen component from the fire triangle as well as eliminating the heat through an extremely cold release. The U.S. Market is Estimated at $1.4bn in 2022, While China is Forecast to Reach $1.2bn by 2026
The Fire Extinguishers market in the U.S. is estimated at $1.4bn in the year 2022. The country currently accounts for a 27.9% share in the global market. China, the world’s second largest economy, is forecast to reach an estimated market size of $1.2bn in the year 2026 trailing a CAGR of 9.2% through the analysis period. Among the other noteworthy geographic markets are Japan and Canada, each forecast to grow at 5.3% and 7.5% respectively over the analysis period.

Within Europe, Germany is forecast to grow at approximately 5.5% CAGR while Rest of European market (as defined in the study) will reach $422m by the end of the analysis period. Foam extinguishers are expensive, and suitable for diverse use except for Class C fires due to shock risk. There are Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) based and Alcohol Resistant Aqueous Film Forming Foam (ARAFFF) based extinguishers, known as Class A and B fire extinguishers for fighting chemical fires, which involve alcohol. In the global Foam-based segment, USA, Canada, Japan, China and Europe will drive the 6.8% CAGR estimated for this segment.

These regional markets accounting for a combined market size of $355m will reach a projected size of $559.3m by the close of the analysis period. China will remain among the fastest growing in this cluster of regional markets. Led by countries such as Australia, India, and South Korea, the market in Asia-Pacific is forecast to reach $94.6m by the year 2026, while Latin America will expand at a 7.9% CAGR through the analysis period.

Charleston Fire Department orders three new Pierce pumpers

Pierce Manufacturing Inc., an Oshkosh Corporation company, will be supplying the Charleston Fire Department in South Carolina. The order includes two Arrow XT pumpers and one Saber pumper. The department purchased the fire apparatus through Pierce’s dealer Spartan Fire and Emergency Apparatus, and delivery is expected in August 2022.

The Pierce Arrow XT pumpers feature a heavy-duty design with a short overall length of 29 feet and will be stationed in Charleston’s historic downtown district. The Saber pumper will support Charleston Fire Department’s suburban and rural service areas.

Joseph Roberts, assistant chief of technical services, Charleston Fire Department said: “The Charleston Fire Department has several fire stations built in the 1880’s and 1910 with height and length restrictions. Working with Pierce and their dealer, Spartan Fire, we were able to develop specifications for apparatus to fit into these older stations and maneuver through Charleston’s narrow historic streets. We purchased our first Pierce fire engine from Spartan Fire and Emergency Apparatus in 1983 and we’re confident in our continued relationship.”

The Pierce Arrow XT Pumpers will feature Arrow XT chassis, 500-gallon water tank, Hale 1500 gpm pump, Cummins L9 450 hp engine, and Side roll and frontal impact protection. Meanwhile the Pierce Saber Pumper will be built on the Saber chassis, and have a 1000-gallon water tank, Hale 1500 gpm pump, Cummins L9 450 hp engine bolted to the Allison 3000 EVS transmission

PHOS-CHEK FORTIFY by Perimeter Solutions qualified as a Proactive Wildfire Solution

Perimeter Solutions, makers of PHOS-CHEK® long-term fire retardant and other high-quality firefighting products, announced today that its ground-based long-term fire retardant PHOS-CHEK FORTIFY® has been added to the USDA Forest Service (USFS) Qualified Products List (QPL), making it the first and only highly-durable fire retardant that has been approved by USDA Forest Service for preventative application on U.S. federal lands.

PHOS-CHEK FORTIFY incorporates breakthrough VISMOTECH technology, a hydrogel platform developed by Stanford University and MIT before Perimeter Solutions acquired the global exclusive rights to the technology.  The PHOS-CHEK FORTIFY formulation builds on PHOS-CHEK’s almost 60 years of proven retardant effectiveness and is formulated with patented polymer technology to provide enhanced durability to weathering as well as adherence to vegetation.

It can be applied on flammable vegetation and cellulosic material early in the fire season before a wildfire approaches and provides ongoing protection, remaining effective until a significant rain event of one inch or more. Unlike retardant dropped from aircraft, which is colored to help pilots track where the retardant is dropped during active wildfires, the durable PHOS-CHEK FORTIFY fire retardant is uncolored and precision applied from the ground.

Products included on the QPL are approved after a rigorous testing and evaluation period. These include testing to ensure low levels of mammalian and aquatic toxicity, as well as evaluations of impact on human health and the environment. The retardant is also put through corrosion testing and measured for retardant efficacy.

PHOS-CHEK FORTIFY has met all the criteria to be listed on the QPL, and it now can be used on federal and most state forest lands in the United States. The listing should also enable application of FORTIFY globally, as other countries, including Canada and Australia, have previously approved QPL-listed long-term fire retardants to be used.

In a single year, there were 37 fire starts along a four-mile stretch on California’s Route 118 in what is known as Rocky Peak. PHOS-CHEK FORTIFY was applied to the same area prior to the following wildfire season, and not one fire was recorded that summer. The retardant was also applied along the roadway and under utility lines in Wildcat Canyon located in San Diego County in California, where a wildfire ignition was recorded. What was projected to be a half-acre to one-acre fire was reduced in size by 99% due to the proactive application of PHOS-CHEK FORTIFY.

Use of PHOS-CHEK FORTIFY as a preventative solution is an environmentally responsible choice, as it eliminates the need to kill the vegetation with dangerous herbicides, clear vegetation to bare mineral soil, or cut down significant forest assets to prevent fire starts. Leaving vegetation intact may lead to greater microbial health in the soil, can help to maintain both plant and animal habitats, and may help reduce the risk for erosion and nutrient runoff.

Rosenbauer America receives 12-unit order

Rosenbauer America has received a multi-unit order from the State of California’s Department of Parks and Recreation. The order, awarded to Rosenbauer with the support of local dealer Burton’s Fire, Inc includes six type-5 engines, five type-6 engines, and a 2200-gallon tactical water tender.

“We are thrilled to be working with the State of California to support their Department of Parks and Recreation,” said Ken Howenstine, Burton’s Fire, Inc., sales engineer. “California boasts 280 state park units, over 340 miles of coastline, 970 miles of lake and river frontage, 15,000 campsites, and 4,500 miles of trails. The department contains the largest and most diverse recreational, natural, and cultural heritage holdings of any state agency in the nation.”

The initial order of 12 custom units will be equipped with UPF Poly Water Tanks, Darley Pumps (6- 2 ½  AGE, 5- 1 ½ AGE, and 1- HM500), Foam Pro 1600 Class A Foam Systems, Whelen Warning, and Siren Package and FireTech HiViZ LED Scene lights.

Cambridge Fire Department takes delivery of Pierce Ascendant Aerial Tower

Pierce Manufacturing Inc has announced that the Cambridge Fire Department in Massachusetts has taken delivery of a Pierce Ascendant® 100’ Heavy-Duty Aerial Tower with mid-mount configuration on a Velocity® custom chassis. Sold through Pierce dealer, Allegiance Fire and Rescue, the new fire truck will replace aging apparatus and will support the city’s sustainability initiatives with leading-edge Idle Reduction Technology and TAK-4® T3 Independent Rear Suspension for added control and stability.

“The City of Cambridge is an old city and densely populated with streets that are narrow and demand a tight turning radius,” said Gerard Mahoney, chief of the Cambridge Fire Department. “Several of our firehouses were built for horse-drawn fire apparatus, and it is now a challenge to design fire trucks with the constraints of such narrow doorways. I was impressed with the outrigger design and that we were able to shorten the length of the new rig, compared to the apparatus it will replace that was built in 2002.”

As Oshkosh Airport Products’ Road Rally takes place over the next several months on the west coast of the U.S., airport emergency response and fire fighting crews on the east coast of the U.S., Canada, and internationally will also have the opportunity to experience the new Striker Volterra ARFF in the months ahead at a location in their region. Additionally, the Road Rally featuring the Oshkosh Airport Products Striker Volterra HEV will take part in the Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo on August 29 – September 2 in Long Beach, California at Oshkosh Corporation’s booth #246 and #1634. The ACT Expo is North America’s largest advanced transportation and clean fleet event where attendees learn about the most progressive fuels, technologies, and vehicles.
