Eccotarp to showcase ET-Roller 7 electric fire hose winder at INTERSCHUTZ

Eccotarp has said that it will showcase its ET-Roller 7 electric fire hose winder at the INTERSCHUTZ exhibition, which takes place next month.

While many end users still manually wind fire hoses, the company said winding various types of fire hoses doesn’t always have to be hard and physically demanding work. The ET-Roller 7 electric fire hose winder enables userrs to wind fire hoses up to 6 inches in diameter.

The winder features a motor powered by Milwaukee batteries, a telescopic handle, a stable four-wheel chassis and a Quick-Release mechanism for fast exchange of adapters for winding different types of fire hoses.

It also features two types of removable carriers (DRUM or 2 FORKS) according to the size of the hose to be wound up and is suitable for various winding methods such as smooth winding of the hose by the coupling as well as hoses folded in half.

The company, based in the Czech Republic, has also confirmed that it will showcase its range of magnetic leak patches, folding spill containment berms and tanks and drain covers at the event.

ISC West 2026, held between March 23rd and 27th at the Las Vegas Venetian Expo Center, will provide a platform for leading security systems providers and experts to showcase emerging technologies slated to shape the future of physical fire and life safety over the next year.

The Calipsa video analytics platform will also be demonstrated, a cloud-based AI-powered program that adds impactful analytics to existing cameras. Calipsa is designed to be camera agnostic, meaning operators can integrate the software into existing systems to benefit from threat detection, false alert filtering and video search features without needing new hardware.

Intuitive AI assistant and alerts software

Another innovative fire and life safety technology expected to be shown at ISC West 2026 is MSI’s AI assistant and visual alerts solutions, intelligent AI-powered software built to help operators identify and act on site-specific threats more accurately and efficiently. 

Via the Avigilon AI Assist solution, operators are empowered to use natural language to identify key security system information and captured insights to help reduce onboarding time for new personnel and enable operators of all experience levels to address safety risks effectively.

Via the Avigilon Video Visual Alerts solution, operators can use powerful on-premise AI technology to create custom safety alerts using natural language prompts. The company announced the accreditation in a statement that also noted five consecutive years of Gold accreditation before moving to Platinum.

What is a K Class Fire Extinguisher Used For?

Fire extinguishers are critical tools for stopping small fires before they spread, but it’s vital to use the correct type for each kind of fire. 

Using the wrong extinguisher can even make a fire worse.

Spraying water on a kitchen grease fire will only spread the flames. 

One particularly dangerous class of fire occurs in kitchens when cooking oils or fats overheat. 

These high-temperature grease fires. 

These are classified as Class K fires in the US, equivalent to Class F in the UK. 

They ignite suddenly and burn intensely. 

They require a special kind of extinguisher formulated specifically to handle burning oil and fat safely. 

This is where the Class K fire extinguisher comes into play: it is designed to tackle blazing cooking oils and keep a kitchen fire from turning into a disaster.

What is a K Class Fire Extinguisher Used For?

A Class K fire extinguisher is used for fires involving cooking oils, fats, and grease.

These are the types of fires that erupt in kitchens due to overheated oil. 

This extinguisher is specifically designed to combat blazing oil in deep fryers, frying pans, griddles, and other commercial cooking equipment. 

According to fire safety standards, a Class K extinguisher is the only effective means to safely put out fires fueled by vegetable oils, animal fats, or grease in cooking appliances.

What Makes a Class K Fire Extinguisher Unique

What makes the Class K extinguisher unique is its extinguishing agent. 

Unlike a water or dry powder extinguisher, a Class K unit contains a special wet chemical solution.

This is often potassium acetate or similar compounds. 

These chemical solutions are extremely effective on hot grease fires. 

When you discharge a Class K extinguisher onto burning oil, the wet chemical comes out as a fine mist and reacts with the fat. 

This reaction forms a thick, soapy foam blanket over the oil.

This process is called saponification

The foam smothers the flames by sealing off the oil from oxygen and also cools the oil below its ignition temperature, preventing the fire from reigniting.

Basically, the Class K extinguisher both starves the fire of oxygen and removes the heat, which are two essential elements needed for the fire to continue burning.

Why Can’t I Use a Different Fire Extinguisher on a K Class Fire?

You cannot substitute other types of fire extinguishers for a Class K fire because grease fires behave very differently from ordinary combustibles or flammable liquid fires

Fires involving cooking oil or fat require Class K extinguishers because no other extinguisher type can reliably or safely extinguish them. 

Using the wrong type can be ineffective or downright dangerous. 

Here’s why Class K fires need their own extinguisher and why other extinguishers won’t work:

Water Will Make a Grease Fire Worse

Never throw water on a burning pan of oil. 

Water is denser than oil, so it sinks below the burning grease and instantly turns into steam. 

As it evaporates, it expands to about 1,600 times its volume, erupting upward and carrying burning oil droplets with it. 

This causes the fire to explode and spread. 

Instead of cooling the fire, a splash of water can fling the flames to new areas (and possibly onto anyone nearby). 

Water and oil don’t mix, and using water will spread a Class K fire.

Standard Foam or Powder Extinguishers Aren’t Effective

Class B foam or dry powder extinguishers, which work for petrol or chemical fires, are not formulated for the extreme high-temperature conditions of cooking oil fires. 

Deep fryer oil can reach temperatures far above the ignition point of other flammable liquids.

A regular dry chemical extinguisher might knock down the flames briefly, but it does not cool the oil sufficiently. 

The oil can remain hot enough to reignite on its own a moment later.

This is essentially a ticking time bomb of fire. 

Also, dry chemical agents (like monoammonium phosphate powders) can form a crust on top of the oil that looks like it’s out, while underneath the oil is still burning or hot. 

When that crust is disturbed or if heat builds up again, the fire can flash back. 

Because they lack the cooling and smothering foam effect, normal Class B/C extinguishers often fail to prevent re-ignition of grease fires.

Co₂ (Carbon Dioxide) Extinguishers Aren’t Suitable

A CO₂ extinguisher fights fire by flooding the area with carbon dioxide to displace oxygen and cool the flames. 

However, with a Class K fire, CO₂ will only cool the surface of the oil while the deeper oil remains extremely hot. 

Once the CO₂ gas dissipates, the oxygen returns and the still-hot oil can reignite itself. 

Moreover, the high-pressure discharge from a CO₂ extinguisher can splatter the burning oil around, potentially spreading the fire to new areas. 

Thus, CO₂ might temporarily appear to put out a grease fire, but the fire is very likely to come roaring back.

How to Use a K Class Fire Extinguisher

If a cooking oil fire breaks out and it’s safe for you to attempt extinguishing it, you should follow proper steps to use the Class K fire extinguisher. 

Using this extinguisher is similar to using any portable extinguisher, but there are a few additional considerations for grease fires. 

Always remember the acronym PASS:

  • Pull
  • Aim
  • Squeeze
  • Sweep

This acronym outlines the basic steps for knowing how to use a fire extinguisher:

  • Pull the safety pin out of the extinguisher’s handle. This pin prevents accidental discharge; pulling it will unlock the handle.
  • Aim the nozzle or hose at the base of the fire, not at the flames. In a grease fire, that means aim where the oil is burning (the surface of the oil). You want to hit the burning oil directly with the extinguishing agent.
  • Squeeze the handle slowly and evenly. This will start the flow of the wet chemical agent. Class K extinguishers are typically designed to discharge in a controlled, gentle spray to avoid splashing the oil.
  • Sweep the nozzle from side to side across the base of the fire while continuing to aim at the oil. Cover the entire area that’s on fire with the mist, and keep spraying until the flames are completely out.

Keeping Safe

While performing these steps, maintain a safe distance. 

It’s recommended to start about 8 to 10 feet (roughly 3 metres) back from the fire and move forward carefully as the flames subside. 

Holding the extinguisher upright, direct the spray low and evenly over the burning oil. 

The wet chemical will create a foamy layer as it contacts the hot grease. 

Make sure to coat the whole surface of the burning oil with this foam. 

This ensures that the fire is fully smothered and cooled. 

Class K extinguishers are engineered to discharge at a lower pressure than other types precisely to avoid splattering the burning oil. 

However, a steady hand control is important to keep the spray directed where it’s needed.

As you fight the fire with the extinguisher, avoid getting too close to splattering grease and never attempt to carry a burning pan outside.

Let the extinguisher do the work of dousing the flames. 

Keep discharging the agent until you’re absolutely sure the fire is out. 

After Extinguishing the Fire

After the flames appear to be extinguished, watch the area closely for a minute or two in case of re-ignition. 

The wet chemical foam should prevent the oil from reigniting, but it’s wise to be vigilant. 

Once everything is under control, ventilate the area if possible. 

Remember to call the fire brigade or emergency services if the fire was significant or if there’s any doubt it might flare up again. 

Also, any used extinguisher will need to be recharged or replaced promptly.

Suppression Systems

If the kitchen has an automatic hood fire suppression system, activate that first or ensure it has activated before using the portable extinguisher. 

The hood system will release its own suppressing agent and often shut off the heat source to the cooking equipment. 

This reduces the intensity of the fire and prevents new fuel from feeding it, making it safer and more effective when you follow up with the handheld Class K extinguisher.

Where are K Class Fire Extinguishers Usually Found?

Class K fire extinguishers are typically found anywhere there is a significant risk of cooking oil or grease fires. 

This means they are most often located in commercial and institutional kitchens. 

These are some of the common places you’ll see Class K extinguishers installed and ready for use:

Restaurant and Café Kitchens

Restaurants, diners, cafeterias, and coffee shops with kitchens all contain cooking appliances that use oil or grease. 

Class K extinguishers are normally required in these kitchens, often positioned near deep fryers or grill areas.

Hotel and Catering Kitchens

Hotel restaurants, banquet hall kitchens, and catering companies prepare food on a large scale and usually have multiple high-temperature cooking stations. 

These sites will have Class K units handy in the cooking areas to address any fryer or skillet fires.

Food Trucks and Mobile Kitchens

Food trucks, street food stalls, and mobile catering vans often operate with compact deep fryers or woks in a tight space. 

A Class K extinguisher is crucial in these environments due to the elevated risk of grease fires in a confined area.

Institutional and Cafeteria Kitchens

Large kitchens in schools, universities, healthcare buildings, nursing homes, prisons, and other institutions commonly cook for many people using industrial-sized equipment. 

These facilities will have Class K extinguishers in the galley or kitchen area to meet fire codes and protect occupants.

Bakeries and Other Food Prep Facilities

Bakeries, pastry shops, or any food production facility that involves frying or high temperature oils will also keep a Class K extinguisher nearby. 

Any facility with commercial cooking equipment is likely to have one.

Streamlight introduces Wedge SL inspection light

Why Streamlight’s Wedge SL changes compact lighting design

Streamlight has launched the Wedge SL, a USB-C rechargeable inspection light designed to offer high performance in a compact form.

According to the company, the Wedge SL provides users with a balance of portability and brightness suited to both professional and personal applications.

The light includes a tail switch for one-handed operation, offering momentary and constant-on modes.

High mode delivers 100 lumens with a 35-metre beam distance, while Low mode provides 50 lumens and a 24-metre beam distance.

The device also features THRO mode, which activates with a three-second press to produce 500 lumens of maximum output.

Programmable operation and durable design

With Streamlight’s TEN-TAP programmable switch, users can select output settings to match their task.

Michael F. Dineen, President of Streamlight, said: “We created the Wedge SL as an ultra-portable lighting tool that doesn’t compromise on performance.

“It’s low-profile, rugged, and packed with features that make it ideal for both professional and everyday carry applications, including auto work and outdoor use.”

The company stated that the Wedge SL features an unbreakable acrylic lens and a Type II MIL-Spec anodised aluminium unibody.

It includes a four-level LED battery status indicator with charge alerts and recharges via USB-C.

Performance and availability

Streamlight confirmed that the Wedge SL is powered by an integrated lithium polymer battery and features IPX4 water resistance and 1-metre impact testing.

The model includes a stainless steel injection-moulded pocket clip and a multi-function tactile switch for easy use.

It is available in Black, Coyote and Silver finishes, measuring 14.35 cm long, 1.4 cm wide, 0.7 cm thick, and weighing 32.3 g.

The company said the product is designed to serve both professionals and consumers seeking a reliable inspection light.

PAC discuss “brackets built better”

PAC’s Vice-President of Sales & Customer Relations Tom Trzepacz outlines the company’s focus on secure tool storage, firefighter safety and operational efficiency 

Firefighters depend on their tools to be ready, secure and accessible at every moment.

Yet with apparatus carrying increasingly complex loads and departments under pressure to do more with less, keeping equipment organised and safe has become a growing challenge.

Poor storage can damage expensive gear, slow down response, or even injure crew members if items shift in transit.

The stakes are high and departments are looking for solutions that combine reliability with ease of use. 

Performance Advantage Company (PAC) has specialised in addressing these problems for more than 30 years, producing brackets and mounting systems that keep tools in place while supporting efficient operations.

The company’s designs are tested against real-world conditions and built to last the life of an apparatus, ensuring confidence in demanding environments.

IFSJ Editor Iain Hoey sat down with Tom Trzepacz, Vice-President of Sales & Customer Relations at PAC, to discuss how secure tool mounting supports firefighter safety and effectiveness. 

What role does reliable equipment storage play in supporting both firefighter safety and operational efficiency? 

Our mounts are simple and quick to use. With our brackets, putting tools away is a fast, clean action. It is easy to see whether a bracket has a tool in it. If it is empty after a scene, you know something is missing. 

Efficiency is the key. Firefighters need to grab a tool, get off the apparatus and put it to work. That is why brackets inside the cab are so important.

They must be mounted safe and secure to protect firefighters on the way to a call. If there is an accident, tools need to stay in their brackets so no one gets hurt. 

Have you seen changes in customer requests or expectations compared to a few years ago? 

The biggest change is the move to battery equipment. Rescue tools have shifted away from truck hydraulics to battery-powered models, with brands like Hurst, Holmatro, TNT and Amkus being our most common requests.

The same applies across categories – fans, drills, impacts, leaf blowers, saws. Departments want brackets that secure batteries with the tools and keep them ready to go. 

We see fewer requests for gas and oil cans or large equipment. At the same time, apparatus are getting smaller or combining two vehicle roles into one.

Departments are trying to fit two trucks’ worth of gear on one rig, so organization matters. Our brackets give them a way to secure everything in place. 

Apparatus are also taking on more defined roles. Some departments replace heavy rescues with smaller rescue-pump combinations but still want to carry the same tools.

Without effective mounting, that is difficult. We also hear from departments that go from six pieces of apparatus to four or five but want to maintain the same load.

Their requests are often about organising setups and using our systems to make it possible. 

When customers need custom solutions, how do you work with them to ensure the right outcome? 

We often have departments call looking for guidance on how to mount tools.

We tell them – whether it is the mechanic, chief or truck committee – they need to decide where everything goes, because they are the ones operating the truck.

We can guide on how to mount items, what fits where and what aligns with NFPA guidelines, but the end user has to lay out their compartments.

The biggest thing we do is take their tool list and match it to our brackets. If we do not have a solution, we say so rather than forcing a poor fit.

We would rather point them in another direction than steer them wrong. Usually, though, we have an answer. 

We also work with them on layouts using our aluminium extrusion and tool boards. A lot of questions we get are about swing out tool boards, which are one of the bigger projects we do.

For example, over the wheel well of a truck you can sometimes put two swing outs, giving five mounting surfaces in one compartment – the back wall, plus both sides of two swing outs.

If you’re mounting large, deep tools you may only manage one swing out with the back wall, but if it’s mostly flat hand tools, you can take advantage of all five surfaces.

That really expands what people can fit. 

Once customers start using our systems, especially the aluminium tool boards that let them move things around without drilling, they usually realise they have more room on the apparatus than they thought. 

How do PAC’s systems help improve the day-to-day effectiveness and safety of fire crews and professionals? 

We play a role from the planning of an apparatus through to how it is used on the fire ground. Every piece of equipment should be mounted and we want to be the partner that provides that solution. 

We put effort into engineering, design and development to come up with answers that work every day. Many of us are firefighters ourselves.

We bring an apparatus in and actually test our brackets with fire gloves on to make sure they work in real scenarios and help crews do the job quicker, because seconds and minutes matter in firefighting and EMS. 

This is why we like to be involved from the ground up when an apparatus is being built and integrated with the manufacturer, so the customer gets a truck set for life.

We have also helped when someone buys a 10- or 20-year-old apparatus that never had tool mounting or needs it redone and we have seen everything in between.

We always encourage effective tool mounting systems – whether that is our brackets on their own or paired with our tool boards – because that keeps equipment where it belongs and ready to go. 

What current PAC projects or product initiatives are you most excited about and why? 

We have a couple things in the works. The biggest is a new Ironslok coming at the start of 2026. We have been working on it for about a year. Right now we offer two versions, the original and the HD. 

In early 2026 there will be one Ironslok serving the needs of both versions and a little better than either. We are excited to launch it while keeping the simplicity. 

It will also make ordering simpler. Right now some users are unsure which one to pick. This will streamline it and do the same job.

It will be NFPA compliant, mountable inside the truck and provide safety and security while being quick to deploy. 

What are PAC’s main areas of focus for the future and how are you preparing for 2026? 

For 2026 we are lining up the trade show calendar. FDIC will be a big one and we have a full slate because we want to grow our presence in a few other sectors while staying strong in the fire industry. 

On the product side, much like the Ironslok project, we are looking at our most common and well-known brackets and asking how to make them better.

We always have new bracket ideas in development, but we also want to improve the products people already rely on. 

We listen closely to feedback from customers at shows and on the phone, good and bad and feed that into engineering.

That helps us spot where a bracket might be missing something or where a small change could make it more useful. 

For 2026 we will review core brackets to see what we can upgrade and we will also introduce new designs where we see gaps in the line.
