What makes the GW-Hygiene vehicle different from standard fire service vehicles?

The GW Hygiene is a vehicle that is not used for direct damage control during operations, but specifically to protect the emergency services and to restore the operational readiness of personnel.

How does this vehicle improve firefighter safety during decontamination?

In the past, firefighters often continued to work in their contaminated protective clothing for a long time after the operation to carry out the necessary follow-up work.

As a result, the damage caused by smoke gases and soot in the clothing is a health hazard and a high burden for the person.

The ability to change clothing at the scene of the incident greatly reduces the risk of damage to health from smoke gases.

Can you explain the importance of separating contaminated and clean materials inside the vehicle?

The spatial separation of black and white in the vehicle and the possibility of isolating the contaminated clothing in the black area and removing it directly via a separate extraction point outside the vehicle greatly reduces contact and exposure time to the hazardous smoke gases, which can be carcinogenic in the long term and prevents the spread of contamination.

How does the vehicle support the overall hygiene strategy of a fire department?

The vehicle supplements the vehicle fleet with a vehicle that is available specifically for the protection of the emergency services.

No stationary decontamination stations need to be set up.

A protected room is also available for the emergency services to recover and restore their operational readiness.

What role does water filtration play in the vehicle’s operation?

The UV filter installed in the vehicle’s internal water supply line allows the fresh water to be sterilised again.

Due to the hygiene requirements for drinking water, a wash water tank was explicitly omitted from the planning for the vehicle.

According to the interpretation of the studies, it is sufficient to wash the potentially exposed areas in the transition areas of the protective clothing, such as the neck, wrists and lower legs and only shower at the locations.

The water supply for the vehicle is provided directly via a connection hose at a hydrant.

How does the vehicle ensure quick setup and efficiency during emergencies?

The vehicle is ready for use within a few minutes of arriving at the scene.

Only the water supply needs to be established and, if necessary, a power supply.

Thanks to a built-in 24V/230V inverter, the vehicle can also be operated autonomously for a certain period of time without an external power supply

What are the key benefits of having a designated recovery space for firefighters in the vehicle?

The emergency services can stay in a room that is protected from the weather and pollutants.

The vehicle also serves as a service point at emergency scenes and as a place where emergency crews can regenerate after working at peak physical performance to regain their operational readiness.

What operational feedback have you received from the Lünen Fire Department so far?

After a project phase lasting around six months, a hygiene vehicle was put out to tender and the contract was awarded to ZIEGLER in July 2022.

After a good two-year construction phase, the vehicle was accepted and picked up on 26 June 2024.

The emergency crews are currently being familiarised and trained with the vehicle.

In the future, the vehicle will be alerted and towed immediately when the second breathing apparatus unit is deployed.

A set of replacement clothing is kept in the fire engine for small operations with short deployment times for the 1st unit.

Do you anticipate a growing demand for hygiene-focused vehicles like this in fire departments across the region?

There will be more and more national and international regulations to protect emergency services from so-called “fire cancer”.

In order to fulfil these requirements, more and more tenders are being invited for hygiene vehicles for use.

An increased demand has already been recognised in Germany for several years.

HSE reveals UK workplace injury and ill health data for 2023/24

Work-related ill health statistics from HSE

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has released its annual report detailing workplace injury and ill health statistics for 2023/24.

According to the report, 1.7 million workers experienced work-related ill health during this period.

This figure is similar to the 1.8 million reported in 2022/23.

Half of these cases were attributed to stress, depression, or anxiety, totalling approximately 776,000 cases.

The report noted a decline in work-related stress, depression, or anxiety cases from 910,000 in 2022/23.

However, the current rate remains higher than pre-pandemic levels recorded in 2018/19.

Economic and productivity impact

Workplace injuries and ill health caused substantial productivity losses in 2023/24.

An estimated 33.7 million working days were lost due to self-reported work-related injuries or illnesses.

The HSE report highlighted the broader economic implications, noting that workplace injuries and new cases of ill health cost the economy £21.6 billion in 2022/23.

This represents a decrease of £1.6 billion compared to the previous year.

Workplace injuries and fatalities

The statistics also cover work-related injuries and fatalities in 2023/24.

During this period, 138 workers were fatally injured in workplace accidents.

Additionally, 604,000 workers reported non-fatal injuries sustained at work.

HSE’s chief executive Sarah Albon reflected on the progress made in workplace safety: “This year marks 50 years since the legislation which established HSE was passed.

Much has been achieved in that time, including a dramatic reduction of around 85 per cent in the numbers of employee fatal injuries in the workplace.”

Albon added: “Today, Great Britain is one of the safest places in the world to work but these statistics serve as a reminder that there is still room for further improvement, and we remain committed to ensuring people remain safe and healthy wherever work is taking place.”

Electric blanket safety warning issued to Nottinghamshire residents as majority fail tests

Electric blanket safety checks in Nottinghamshire reveal high failure rate

At recent safety events in Nottinghamshire, 60% of electric blankets tested were found to be unsafe, as reported by Nottinghamshire City Council.

Conducted across Cotgrave, Newark, and Retford, the testing events uncovered that out of 282 electric blankets tested, 170 were deemed unsafe, with age being a primary factor in their failure.

Some blankets were found to be over 50 years old, far exceeding the recommended 10-year replacement guideline.

Organised by Nottinghamshire County Council’s Trading Standards team and the Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS), the events provided residents whose blankets failed the test with free replacements.

The initiative highlights the council’s ongoing commitment to reducing fire hazards associated with ageing and faulty electric blankets.

Signs of wear and recommended disposal

The Trading Standards team advises anyone with an electric blanket to regularly inspect it for signs of damage, including scorch marks, fraying fabric, exposed wires, and other signs of wear.

Blankets showing these issues should be disposed of at any of the county’s 12 household waste and recycling centres rather than in general waste bins.

Councillor Gordon Wheeler, Deputy Cabinet Member for Communities and Public Health, said: “These figures show the reality that we have potentially stopped a number of fires due to unsafe electric blankets in Nottinghamshire.

“However, while the figures offer a sense of relief that these blankets are now longer being used, we know that this is just the tip of the iceberg as there will be other Nottinghamshire residents who use electric blankets who may have an item in the same or worse condition.”

New testing event scheduled for December

In response to the recent findings, Nottinghamshire County Council has scheduled an additional testing event in partnership with Electrical Safety First.

The event will take place on Monday, 2 December, at Ashfield Library, where residents can bring in their electric blankets for safety testing.

If a blanket fails, it will be replaced free of charge. Appointments can be made by calling 0115 804 4555.

Wheeler encouraged residents to attend: “We’re really keen that residents sign up to get their blankets tested at our new date in December.

“I’d like to reassure anyone who may be thinking about attending that they won’t be left without an electric blanket should theirs fail safety testing as our friendly trading standards team will be on hand to issue a brand new one if needs be.”

Fire risk awareness and community engagement

The Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service also highlighted the importance of regular checks on electric blankets to prevent fire risks.

Natasha Neale, NFRS Community Engagement and Partnerships Manager, stated: “Electric blankets can pose a significant fire risk due to their potential of overheating, frayed wires, or loose connections.

“We always recommend that you replace it after ten years, or if it becomes faulty, to minimise the fire risks within your home.”

She added that the testing events provided opportunities for community engagement and raised fire safety awareness among vulnerable residents, generating over 50 Safe and Well Visits.

These visits allow NFRS to promote fire safety across Nottinghamshire, ensuring residents have working smoke alarms.

Neale urged Ashfield district residents to book a December appointment, emphasising the peace of mind that a safe electric blanket can provide.

Firefighting and dermal poisoning

David Lamb, Chairman of Nonwovenn, discusses the evolving challenges of dermal absorption for firefighters and how innovative fabrics are addressing these critical health risks

When firefighters rush towards a fire, their core fear may not be the unpredictability of the blaze itself.

Rather it’s the highly toxic fumes being created as complex chemicals burn.

These concerns are well-grounded, with research funded by the Fire Brigades Union ongoing into the health consequences for responders present at the Grenfell Tower disaster in London, in June 2017.

This is no minor problem. Firefighters are dying from rare cancers up to 20 years earlier than the general public.

Academics have found that firefighters face ‘a significant increase in the incidence of rectal, prostate, bladder and testicular cancers as well as mesothelioma and malignant melanoma in firefighters compared to the general population’.

So, it is critical to understand how the poisons are being absorbed and how better to protect first responders.

It is absorption through the skin, as much as inhalation, that is the transmission mechanism causing increasing concern over the premature mortality of firefighters.

Minute toxic contamination molecules from gases and solid particles are known to pass through the thinner layers of skin on our scalps, necks behind our ears and areas such as underarms and tops of the legs.

Researchers have found that it is this dermal exposure which presents a high cancer risk with current PPE.

Dermal absorption occurs when a chemical or chemicals go through the skin and travel into the body.

Many chemicals used in the workplace can damage organs if they penetrate the skin and enter the bloodstream.

 Absorption can occur through direct contact with the chemical itself i.e.

in liquid form and in the case of fires, from toxic gases and vapours which are much smaller than actual physical particles and dusts.

The hidden dangers of wildfires

When ablaze, peat fires emit significant levels of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and soot, while in the smouldering stage they emit high levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), methane (CH4), much more carbon monoxide (CO) and particulate matter (PM).

Natural resins, rosin and sap from burning moors create dangerous hazards on combustion such as formaldehydes.

Wildland fire fighters are particularly vulnerable as current PPE is often based on basic flame-retardant coveralls.

These are designed to protect against airborne embers and worn typically over station wear, or basic underwear.

Wildland fire is basically hot and arduous work and not conducive to any additional heat burden from PPE.

If firefighters minimise their equipment, they risk maximising their potential exposure.

The dangers associated with encountering carcinogenic chemicals through fire effluent and smoke is set out in detail in a report by Anna Stec and her team at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN).

Their work gives an insight into the torrent of toxins pouring out from a major fire.

It is intuitive that effective masks to reduce the inhalation risk are critical.

Our lungs are extremely delicate, the fumes laced with potent carcinogens and deadly dusts.

But are first responders getting the protection required relevant to the kind of threat firefighters and emergency workers face?

The Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency has found that current firefighters’ PPE is not designed to prevent combustion gases from coming into contact with the body.

There is also potential diffusion of toxic gases/vapours through firefighters’ turn-out jackets (Mayer et al).

 This in turn can defuse through the skin and in some cases, such as exposure to Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH’s), cancers can result.

This explains why the WHO has declared cancer to be the number one health risk to firefighters.

The role of advanced PPE in firefighter health

The prevention of such hazards are critical to health and wellbeing and is achieved by special forms of PPE produced as protective garments often involving a number of fabric combinations working as a ‘system’.

This is where my business Nonwovenn is operating.

The key to the fabric is not just its remarkable capacity to prevent the toxins from reaching the skin.

It is also the usability of the materials such as overgarments.

Challenges with traditional firefighter PPE

Older types of PPE, are simply far too heavy, making fire-fighting much harder and reducing the endurance for tackling the blaze.

Firefighters simply cannot spend enough time at the scene due to the heat stress caused by unwieldly PPE.

Tied in with this is perspiration.

Continual exertion creates energy-sapping heat for those working in hazmat suits.

Even more so for firefighters.

Research has shown that as skin temperature rises then absorption into the body from toxic materials increases also.

It is understood that for every 5c increase in skin temperature, absorption of toxins via the skin can increase by 400%.

Proper functioning PPE has to be appropriate to these risks.

Material must be not just lightweight and able to minimise thermal burden, but also maintain air permeability.

This is what Nonwovenn’s designs deliver – they allow air flow and evaporation from the skins surface to transport heat and moisture away, utilising the bodies own natural mechanisms of heat regulation.

Commissioned to carry out testing in accordance with EN 16523-1 and EN 16523-2, our fabrics were assessed as effective against two representative Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH’s), namely Benzene and Naphthalene.

These chemicals were chosen due to their volatility and relatively small molecular size and deemed to be amongst the most difficult to protect against.
