Securiton’s digital-first approach breaks new ground with the ASD 2000

Aspirating smoke detection (ASD) has long been the gold standard for Early Warning Fire Detection. But until 2026, ASD systems remained locked in a bygone age. Securiton has changed that with the digital-first ASD 2000.

With the Swiss company’s new device family, gone are the buttons and complex displays of old: this is a futuristic looking graphite-coloured box controlled from an app on your phone. It was born of a brief focused not on hardware, but on a seamless user journey.

Today, that means a mobile app as the primary interaction interface, alongside intuitive design that reduces complexity and saves time throughout the design, installation and commissioning process.

As an ASD pioneer with over 50 years of experience in the field, it is appropriate that Securiton should provide this generational leap forward in ASD technology. As part of the security-focused Swiss Securitas Group, Securiton was also able to direct considerable efforts to build a secure interface for the app – essential because of longstanding concerns in some key industries.

Fire detection is life critical; it’s highly regulated; and it’s generally business-critical too: around half of businesses that suffer a major blaze never recover. Others, such as data centres, power networks or financial firms, will suffer heavy costs and reputational damage should their services be suspended due to a blaze or even a false alarm.

No surprise, then, that they do not wish for the devices protecting them to be hacked. However, the fire safety industry can no longer ignore the efficiency gains available through a digital approach.

Advantages of the ASD 2000

Securiton’s solution uses multilevel encryption and authentication to ensure only the company’s authorised partners can control a device. The security architecture followed the strictest industry protocols, and the result also offers significant advantages to the old ‘dongles’ which were used to identify authorised users up to now.

With the app system, levels of clearance and permissions can be set – or taken away – almost instantly. And all the actions of a given user are clearly recorded, whereas previously the shortage of physical dongles usually led to service engineers sharing hardware and accounts.

The first SecuriSmoke product where commissioning, configuration, diagnostics, and operation are all managed through an intuitive mobile application is therefore arguably its most secure yet.

Nevertheless, Securiton is pressing on with plans to roll out a version of the ASD 2000 that offers a more conventional set-up process. This will allow installers to access the performance benefits of the new device in areas where security protocols mean the app cannot be used.

Those performance benefits make the ASD 2000 an industry-leading device even without its digital interface: because they were designing a new device from scratch, the 60-strong development team were able to pack in many major performance upgrades.

The detection chamber has undergone a redesign from scratch, doubling the maximum sensitivity to 0.001% obs/m, and a 1000pa aspiration engine expands the potential pipe network and raises system limits, especially in the highest Class A EN 54 standard for Very Early Warning Fire Detection.

The SecuriSmoke ASD 2000 offers multiple leaps forward in terms of the technologies inside. For the industry as a whole, perhaps the move to a fully digital, remote interface is the most significant. It remains to be seen if other manufacturers will follow suit.

FSi Promat introduces certified shaft wall fire stopping systems

FSi Promat validates shaft wall systems through independent testing

FSi Promat and Siniat have completed independent testing to provide a third-party certified fire stopping solution for shaft wall applications.

The fire stopping specialist joined forces with drywall manufacturer Siniat to demonstrate the performance of the Stopseal Batt and Flexi Coat system.

Both companies are part of the Etex group and conducted the assessments to ensure compatibility with Siniat shaft wall systems.

Shaft walls require non-standard framing and board configurations which make traditional fire testing to harmonised BS or EN standards impractical.

The use of third-party certification allows these systems to be specified in diverse and complex shaft wall configurations.

Independent validation ensures that extended applications remain compliant while supporting an increased field of application for fire stopping capabilities.

Technical specifications for FSi Promat systems

The certification adheres to European regulations including EN 13501-2 for fire integrity and insulation.

Testing also included EN 1364-1 to verify wall deflection tolerance up to 100mm during fire exposure.

The certification accommodates directional fire testing for both symmetrical and asymmetrical shaft wall constructions.

Compliance with specified minimum wall thickness standards is maintained across the validated configurations.

How LEADER Group’s DIPHASIC mist system improves fireground safety

Firefighting system uses mist to provide 98% radiant heat protection

LEADER Group has announced a new firefighting technology called the DIPHASIC system which provides up to 98% protection against radiant heat flux during fireground interventions.

The system was developed in collaboration with the Paris Fire Brigade and other fire services to address increasing operational challenges.

This technology uses an air and water mixture to generate a mist composed of more than 1.5 billion micro-droplets per litre.

Projected at high speed, these droplets disperse throughout a volume and move around obstacles to act directly on hot gases.

The system prioritises the effectiveness of each litre of water rather than increasing overall flow rates.

Operational deployment of the technology has been in place since 2023 following scientific validation and real-scale testing.

The company will present the system at INTERSCHUTZ 2026 in Hall 13 at Booth F20 / G20.

Reducing water consumption and structural damage

Fire crews using the mist can reduce water usage by four to six times in some configurations while maintaining operational effectiveness.

Lower volumes of water limit structural loading from accumulation and reduce flooding in residential or commercial buildings.

This reduction in water use also decreases restoration requirements following fire incidents.

The system is intended to stabilise fire behaviour including flashover and backdraft conditions.

Crews can use the technology for the rapid cooling of smoke and hot gases to improve safety during advancement.

It supports firefighting without a direct line of sight and improves visibility within compartments.

Tactical applications in confined and remote environments

The DIPHASIC system has been applied in structural fires, underground parking fires and naval or airport operations.

Its ability to move through enclosed volumes is intended to support firefighting in confined environments or remote locations with restricted water access.

LEADER Group explained that the system is designed to complement existing firefighting methods rather than replace them.

It is positioned as a tactical option for use alongside established equipment depending on fire conditions and crew judgement.

The technology contributes to wider discussions regarding whether operational strategy should prioritise higher flow rates or efficiency in water application.

Next generation MSA Safety protective equipment appearing at FDIC

MSA Safety presents G1 XR platform and FireGrid API at FDIC

MSA Safety is showcasing the G1 XR Edition Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and the new FireGrid Incident Command Application Programming Interface (API) at FDIC International this week.

The manufacturer is demonstrating how the G1 XR Edition SCBA addresses fireground realities by reducing weight and improving fit for the user.

This next-generation SCBA platform features adjustable lumbar pad options and updated soft goods to allow departments to customise the equipment.

The G1 XR Edition SCBA meets the requirements of the 2025 edition of the NFPA 1970 standard.

Specific design updates include simplified cleaning processes and pull straps alongside technology to support clearer radio communication.

Integration of FireGrid API for incident command

The company is expanding its connected safety offerings through the introduction of the FireGrid Incident Command API.

This technology enables the integration of G1 SCBA data directly into MSA-approved incident command systems preferred by individual departments.

Commanders gain increased insight into air pressure and movement as well as alarms and individual firefighter information.

The API facilitates the sharing of alarms via a secure cloud connection with selected software partners used for managing apparatus or hydrant locations.

Head-to-toe firefighter protection and turnout gear

MSA Safety is also presenting its wider range of protective equipment at FDIC including Globe Manufacturing Company turnout gear and Cairns helmets.

Attendees can now order the Globe G-XTREME PRO Jacket which features a three-panel design to reduce bulk and increase mobility.

The jacket includes a mic pass-through option for wearing a radio beneath the garment and offers a broader range of fit options.

Further enhancements for the G-XTREME PRO Jacket are currently being previewed including new moisture barrier offerings and collar closure options.

These developments are part of the head-to-toe firefighter protection system being showcased at booth 2523 during the event in Indianapolis.

New fire-rated RISER-DOR expands Robust UK access panel range

Fire-rated riser door launch

Robust UK has launched RISER-DOR, a bespoke fire-rated riser door for concealing service units and providing access within vertical shafts.

Robust UK said the made-to-order access panel is designed for electrical wiring, plumbing and HVAC systems.

The door is fire-rated to E120 and is described as providing 120-minute fire resistance.

It is intended to contain fire within the shaft for up to two hours and to prevent flames entering the shaft if a fire starts outside it.

Product design and specification

RISER-DOR is designed to sit flush within the wall and includes concealed pivot hinges, a concealed frame and minimal visible hardware.

The door uses a three-point locking system operated with a T-bar key.

It can be polyester powder-coated as standard and finished in any colour to blend with the surrounding wall.

Materials and intended use

Robust UK said RISER-DOR is fully compliant with relevant building regulations and is intended for multi-storey commercial and residential buildings including hotels, offices, hospitals and educational facilities.

The door is made from Magnelis steel and is available with a warranty of up to 10 years.

According to the company, the material forms a self-healing protective layer on cut edges to improve corrosion resistance and extend product life.

New Firechief stove guard targets higher risk kitchen settings

Firechief launches updated kitchen stove guard

Firechief has launched the FSW1E Kitchen Stove Guard, an updated version of its FSW1 model for electric stoves in higher risk kitchen settings.

Firechief said the new unit uses an 8×8 matrix heat detection sensor to monitor cooking activity and cut the electricity supply to the hob before a fire can take hold.

The system uses heat detection rather than smoke detection. It has a single control unit that comes factory paired with its sensor.

The unit can be mounted on a hood, wall or ceiling. Self-adhesive brackets are included as standard.

Firechief stated that the product is tested and certified to BS EN 50615:2015 Category B and carries CE and UKCA marking.

Professional installation is required. The product is intended for electric stoves.

It is described as suitable for sheltered housing, student accommodation, supported living facilities, high-rise apartments and settings where distraction or memory difficulties may increase the risk of cooking being left unattended.

App and installation details

Firechief said a dedicated installer app is available for iOS and Android for the FSW1E.

Using Bluetooth Low Energy connectivity, the app allows installers to view system status, configure stove type and sensor placement, and set programmable automatic safe timer limits from a mobile device during installation.

The app is designed for installers only.

The FSW1E is available now and remains part of the Firechief Kitchen Stove Guard range alongside the existing FSW1 model.

Innovation on the frontline: MSA G1 XR SCBA targets mobility and endurance

Kate McGraw, Senior Product Line Manager, and Patti Tavelli, Segment Marketing Manager at MSA Safety, reveal how the MSA G1 SCBA XR Edition improves comfort, mobility and on-scene safety for firefighters

What are the most significant advancements in the MSA G1 XR 2025 Edition SCBA?

Kate McGraw: The XR edition is the culmination of extensive VOC (Voice of Customer), and we’ve spent a significant amount of time talking to our customers.

The original G1 was developed in partnership with our firefighters and what we’ve done with the XR is taken the last 10 years of experience that we have with our firefighters and looked at ways to enhance the comfort and weight of the unit, as well as understand the finer details of that firefighter experience.

We have done everything from a 25% reduction in the weight of the lumbar pad, should you choose the low-profile option, all the way down to the minor details of how we sew our pull strap end terminations so that it’s easier for the firefighter to put on the unit.

We really want to focus on where we’ve advanced weight reduction and comfort and the smaller details to make sure that every day that firefighters who are using this SCBA, they have the best experience possible.

Patti Tavelli: We understand that different fire departments have different needs and preferences.

Through our partnerships working with departments around the world, we’ve incorporated that feedback into the enhancements made in the G1 platform today.

What you’ll see at FDIC is that the G1 platform offers individualised options for departments based on their needs and preferences.

The feedback that we’ve received is that customers really value that ability to customise their experience.

Our goal is to ensure departments have the solutions and support that fit them best.

Weight reduction and comfort are key for firefighters. How have you evolved the SCBA to improve firefighter endurance and mobility?

KM: We know that ounces equal pounds for each piece of equipment a firefighter wears.

Last year we launched the XR edition, featuring our low-profile swiveling lumbar pad featuring a 25% weight reduction compared to our adjustable height lumbar pad.

Each deliver on comfort in a different way.

Our adjustable height allows you to choose which of the positions work best for you.

For example, I would choose the shorter version, but I have stood next to a firefighter who is 6’8” and needs the exact opposite.

That’s a big part of comfort and mobility with the What we’ve been hearing from firefighters is that it almost feels like a back brace and is very comfortable firefighters.

But what we saw was an opportunity to offer a lower weight option.

There are some departments who choose not to change their adjustable height and typically leave it in the middle position.

We took that feedback and the opportunity to remove the metal carrier which removes 25% of weight compared to the adjustable height.

Removing the adjustable assembly also means it is sitting about a half inch closer to the body.

What we’ve been hearing from firefighters is that it almost feels like a back brace and is very comfortable.

Another change we introduced last year is our smaller lumbar pad that allows you to more easily adjust the pull straps to get the SCBA cinched in close to the body.

All these small changes – the smaller lumbar for better adjustment, or the elimination of the carrier for reduced weight – make it significantly more comfortable.

PT: We place strong emphasis on listening to our firefighters.

Details some might overlook; we focus on them as significant because they directly impact how a firefighter performs in extremely challenging conditions.

How have enhancements to end of service time PSI system and soft goods improved usability for firefighters?

KM: These are both driven by NFPA standards.

With NFPA 1970-2025, all porous soft goods have to be removable by the end user so that they can be laundered per the department’s protocol.

This is an advancement focused on health and wellness of the firefighters and all of our soft goods are removable and can be washed.

The end of service time indicator is basically bringing the standard in line with the original intent.

Essentially, there is the actual volume or time remaining, and then there’s what the SCBA unit can read in PSI.

When the NFPA made the change, they wanted to give the firefighters more time to get out of the building once they hit low air.

They had previously changed the end of service time to 35%, but what they realised was when it’s 35% of pressure remaining, you actually have significantly more time remaining.

What they’ve done is change the way that you measure it such that you have 35% of your time remaining, and now the end-of-service indicator makes the unit alarm at a different PSI.

Search and rescue functionality is important. What updates have been made to support firefighters in challenging conditions?

KM: As part of our soft goods updates, we made some changes to the pull straps and some of the soft goods to better enable firefighter removal.

One thing that a lot of departments will do is unbuckle their waist strap and put it through their legs to make a harness so they can drag the person out.

We made some changes to our waist belt, such as extending it, so that people can more easily do that packaging technique.

We also have some exciting changes related to search and rescue that we’ll be bringing to show firefighters at FDIC in Indianapolis.

With the NFPA introducing Bluetooth indicators, how do those features enhance situational awareness and overall safety?

KM: The standard requires that any 1802 radio that is Bluetooth connected to the SCBA have a Bluetooth indication in the HUD as well as on the control module.

We’ve taken the step of any radio that’s connected to the G1 has that Bluetooth indication.

The reasoning was in most after-actions, a common theme is communications.

The G1 is a platform that focuses on crystal clear communication, and we want to make sure that the firefighter is aware if they’ve lost their connection.

Because of this we have repurposed a position in our HUD to use that indication to let a firefighter know that their communication is connected.

How do you go about working with firefighters to come up with a solution that works for them?

PT: We focus on continuous improvement and relentless innovation by building on 10 plus years of the G1 platform.

We have formal solicitation feedback processes in place, in addition to always observing and listening.

We’re always asking for current feedback as well as always looking ahead because we never stop innovating.

We strategically plan far out ahead, addressing what is right in front of us, with every decision based on what matters most to firefighters.

KM: This is a process that is holistic with all of our employees.

Patti is more customer facing and she interacts with people constantly.

Our sales team is always sharing information back.

My job as the product manager is to take all that information from the field and translate it to the engineers so that we can come up with design changes and strategy.

Additionally, even though they’re not customer facing, every one of our designers and engineers is eager to speak with our firefighters to learn how we can improve.

Every single interaction with a customer, whether it’s a formal development process or a research project, is an opportunity to collect more information and to improve that product.

Where do you see the next stage of demands coming from firefighters?

KM: I think the biggest thing is meeting the departments where they are because there’s a wide range of departments, both large and small.

Some are very technological forward, and there are some that are not quite there yet.

We need to make sure we are continuing to innovate and understand where the space can lead us but also recognising that we have to meet our departments where they are in their journey.

There’s a lot of exciting space for exploration.

There’s also a really great opportunity, even with some more basic technology, to help some of the departments that are out there.

Exel Composites introduces fire-rated composite for building and infrastructure use

Fire-rated material meets two European standards

Exel Composites has developed a new non halogenated fire-rated composite material that meets key European building standards and has been validated through independent third-party testing in France and the UK.

Exel Composites said the material was tested in accordance with EN 13501 1 and achieved a Euroclass B s2, d0 reaction to fire classification.

Testing by British and French laboratories found the material made a limited contribution to fire, with low smoke production and no flaming droplets.

The material also meets EN 13706 mechanical performance class E23 for pultruded composite profiles.

The company said this addresses a long standing issue in construction applications, where fire retardant composite materials have often lacked clearly defined mechanical classifications aligned with European standards.

Neil Dykes, Technical Sales Manager at Exel Composites, said: “This development is significant due to the removal of the traditionally used halogens which are heavily regulated because of health and safety issues.

“The new material formulation has demonstrated Euroclass B fire performance in external laboratories, while still complying with EN 13706 E23 mechanical requirements.”

Fire-rated composite designed for multiple applications

The formulation can be applied across different profile designs, starting from a wall thickness of three millimeters upwards.

Applications named by the company include façade and envelope elements and frames for fire rated doors.

The material is also intended for technical joinery and modular housing structures.

Dykes added: “This gives designers and engineers a clear and reliable basis for specification, alongside CEN/TS 19101:2022, which defines the European design rules for FRP composite structures.”

The company said the non halogenated solution is already available across its production sites in Europe, Asia and North America.

By validating fire behaviour and mechanical performance through recognised European standards and independent testing, the material is positioned for construction and infrastructure applications in Europe.

Hydrogen detection deal adds new technology to Consilium portfolio

Consilium expands hydrogen detection portfolio

Consilium Safety Group has acquired all assets and intellectual property related to Insplorion AB’s hydrogen sensor technology business following approval at an extraordinary general meeting held on April 13.

Consilium announced the acquisition as part of its gas safety work for marine, critical infrastructure and energy-related applications.

The transaction includes Insplorion’s hydrogen sensor NPS-P2 and an ongoing certification process linked to the product.

The company said the acquisition adds hydrogen detection technology and related expertise to its existing safety portfolio.

Consilium deal includes NPS-P2 and certification process

The acquisition includes the NPS-P2 hydrogen sensor, which is described as having documented performance in demanding environments.

It also includes an ongoing certification process intended to open access to the marine sector and regulated industrial environments globally.

Consilium said it is positioned to take over that process and move the product towards full-scale commercialisation through its distribution network and brand presence in the safety sector.
