Fire doorset testing: Why integrated fire resistance and smoke leakage testing matters

Fire-resisting doorsets play an important role in compartmentation, helping to limit the spread of fire and smoke throughout a building. Fire resistance has traditionally been perceived as the primary performance characteristic for fire doors, but smoke control is coming into sharper focus when assessing how a doorset performs as a complete assembly.

The planned withdrawal of BS 476 classifications from Approved Document B in September 2029 and adoption of EN-based classification is prompting manufacturers to review how fire and smoke performance is evidenced and classified.

For many manufacturers, that means taking a more joined-up approach to testing, combining fire resistance and smoke leakage programmes to build a clearer picture of overall doorset performance.

Why fire doorset testing is changing

Smoke leakage testing has traditionally focused on sealing systems fitted to the head and jambs of a doorset.

While that approach remains aligned with the current regulatory guidance for smoke control doors, there is now greater attention on understanding the performance of the complete assembly, including how smoke may pass through gaps at the threshold.

More recent guidance, such as BS 8214:2026 has encouraged wider consideration of threshold sealing and the contribution that the bottom gap can make to smoke leakage.

This reflects a broader move towards assessing the complete doorset rather than individual components and ensuring performance clearly links to realworld applications.

Smoke leakage testing and complete doorset performance

Many organisations still approach smoke leakage testing and fire resistance testing through separate programmes. There can be good reasons for working in this way. Product development rarely follows a straight line and designs can evolve.

However, the risk of working in this way is that important design details may be missed that need to be evaluated for both fire and smoke performance characteristics.

The result is that when smoke leakage testing has been carried out on one design and fire resistance testing on another, additional work may be required to establish how those results apply to the final doorset being offered to the market.

The process can become even more complicated when multiple product variations, sizes or hardware options are involved. Manufacturers may find themselves managing several test reports, assessments and supporting documents to demonstrate that a doorset can deliver both fire resistance and smoke control performance.

Benefits of integrated fire doorset testing

Planning smoke leakage and fire resistance testing together in a coordinated programme reduces duplication, testing schedules and project management activities. It can also help manufacturers build a more coherent technical package while reducing the risk of gaps emerging later in the process.

This becomes particularly valuable when results are intended to support extended field of application reports and classifications using the EN 13501-2 framework for doorsets. Integrated programmes can also provide greater confidence when supporting future product developments, particularly where manufacturers plan to introduce additional sizes, hardware arrangements or design variations.

Integrated testing at Warringtonfire Birchwood

Demand for more joined-up testing programmes is one of the reasons Element has expanded its smoke leakage testing capability at the Warringtonfire Birchwood facility. The facility forms part of Element’s £24 million investment in fire testing infrastructure and was opened in January 2025 to support growing demand for construction product testing.

The site includes an indicative furnace for small-scale rapid testing, as well as two horizontal furnaces, two vertical furnaces and 18 preparation bays including confidentiality shields, providing capacity to support a broad range of testing requirements.

Automating fire-rated doors requires robust evidence says ADSA

The Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA) has established a cross-industry steering group to investigate the safety implications of automating existing fire-resisting timber doors.

This collaborative initiative aims to determine whether retrofitting hardware or routing cables for automation compromises the integrity of a fire-rated door system.

Industry leaders Record UK, dormakaba and GEZE UK are participating in the group alongside the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers and the British Woodworking Federation.

A fire test house will conduct controlled testing to replicate common installation scenarios such as drilling for cabling and replacing manual closing devices.

Findings from the research will establish an evidence base for the industry regarding how typical modifications influence fire performance.

Darren Hyde, Technical and Training Manager at ADSA, said: “Many of the questions we receive now relate to automating existing fire doors.

“When you retrofit automation, you’re potentially changing the construction of the door.

“What we want to do as an industry is understand exactly how those modifications affect fire performance.”

Guidance for engineers and specifiers

Technical data from the programme will be used to create new guidance for building owners and fire safety professionals scheduled for release later this year.

The document will provide practical methods for cable routing and fire-stopping to help engineers maintain door integrity during automation projects.

ADSA noted that while new-build projects use fully tested door systems, the retrofit environment is often less predictable for installers.

Hyde added: “In new-build, manufacturers can provide clear test evidence for complete systems.

“In retrofit situations, that level of certainty doesn’t always exist.

“We want to close that gap in understanding.”

The project intends to balance the accessibility benefits of automated movement with the necessity of maintaining established fire safety standards.

ADSA expects the results to support more informed decision-making by demonstrating how existing doors can be adapted safely without requiring full replacement.

Harmony Fire begins fire door safety upgrades at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital

Harmony Fire secures Gloucestershire Royal Hospital contract

Harmony Fire has been appointed to deliver a fire door replacement programme at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital as part of an investment in modernising life safety systems across the Great Western Road campus.

The project involves the replacement of over 150 specialist fire doors across three hospital buildings.

Works are scheduled to occur at the Gallery Wing, the Women’s Centre and the campus diagnostic Imaging Department.

The Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust commissioned the project to upgrade infrastructure while maintaining continuous 24/7 operations at the facility.

The scope of work includes the installation of new ward doors, riser doors and office doors alongside new access control systems.

Harmony Fire developed a twin phased programme in collaboration with the Trust’s Capital and Estates team, Ward Managers and the campus Fire Safety team.

All installations must meet the requirements of the NHS fire code Health Technical Memorandum 05 (HTM 05).

ASFP to launch new technical documents at Fire Safety Event

New ASFP technical guidance for fire safety professionals

The Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) will launch several new and updated technical documents at the Fire Safety Event at the NEC from 28th to 30th April 2026.

These free documents will be available in hard copy format at Stand G120 with representatives on site to answer questions regarding the content of each Colour Book.

Distribution is limited to 100 copies per publication on a first come first serve basis with a limit of one copy per person.

The Green Book – Fire Door Systems: Guidance on specification, application and management – Volume 1 is a new publication scheduled for launch on 28th April at 11.00am.

This document brings together guidance on the specification and management of fire door systems for residential and mixed-use commercial buildings.

Technical author Hannah Mansell (ASFP Consultant / ADOORABILITY) and technical group chair Damian Ward (Checkmate Fire Solutions) will be the primary representatives on site for queries.

The ASFP Clear Book: Fire-Resistant Glazing covers the design and maintenance of glazed fire resisting systems including internal partitions and external curtain walling.

Inspecting passive fire protection and partition standards

The 2nd Edition of the Guide to Inspecting Passive Fire Protection (PFP) for Fire Risk Assessors contains updated text to assist with inspections under fire safety legislation.

Niall Rowan (ASFP) will launch this edition on 29th April at 11.00am to help assessors verify that PFP supporting means of escape is adequate.

The Purple Book – Fire Resisting Partitions: A guide to internally framed non-load-bearing partitions has been updated to its 3rd Edition.

This version includes references to the removal of BS 476 as a means for satisfying Approved Document B and other statutory guidance documents.

It provides guidance on partitions fitted with services that impose loads such as fire dampers and penetrating services.

Rowan will also lead the launch of this document on 29th April at 1.30pm.

Updated Grey Book volumes for fire and smoke dampers

The ASFP Grey Book Volume 1 focuses on fire dampers in accordance with BS EN 15650 and provides practical advice for manufacturers and installers.

This 3rd Edition is intended to ensure dampers function as intended by current regulations and will launch on 30th April at 12.00pm.

The Grey Book Volume 2 is a new publication covering smoke control dampers in accordance with BS EN 12101-8.

It serves as a guide for designers and inspectors to ensure the use of dampers that have been fire tested for specific applications.

Technical group chair Darren Webster (Fire Safe Duct Work) and technical group convenor Andrew Taylor (ASFP) will be available for technical queries regarding both Grey Book volumes.

The launch events take place next to the Passive Fire Conference stage during the three day exhibition.

Allegion will present fire door hardware displays, live demonstrations and training information at The Fire Safety Event 2026 at the NEC in Birmingham from 28 to 30 April.

Allegion announced that its team will be based across stands 4/E90 and 4/F20 during the event.

At stand 4/E90, visitors will be able to view working door displays and live demonstrations showing how the company’s security, hardware and door control products operate within a fire door assembly.

The stand will also include practical guidance on tested and certified hardware for timber, steel and composite fire doors.

Products due to be shown include the Boss electromagnetic hold-open cam-action door closer, the fire-rated FinProtect Plus finger protection guards and the Zero International Drop Seal.

Allegion training and competition at the NEC

At stand 4/F20, Allegion will provide fire door safety guidance and information on accredited practical training courses from Fire Door Maintenance (FDM).

The company is also running a competition linked to an on-stand fire door display.

Visitors who correctly identify faults on the display will be entered into a draw to win a free one-day accredited training course at the FDM training centre.

One winner will be drawn on each day of the event and can attend a course on a date of their choice.

Consultation outlines exemption route for some fire door approvals in England and Wales

Exemption proposal covers fire door work

Fire door installation and maintenance work in England and Wales could be allowed to bypass formal approval from building control bodies under proposals from the Building Safety Regulator (BSR).

Inside Housing reported that the BSR has proposed a self-certification scheme for fire door work in both high-risk and lower-risk buildings.

The change would allow landlords to show that safety work complies with building regulations without going through the BSR gateway process.

The regulator said this would save “significant time and cost for those carrying out this type of work” and keep standards in place while improving transparency.

Last autumn, Lord Roe, chair of the BSR, told Inside Housing that minor work should be removed from the regulator’s oversight.

In January, the government launched a consultation on removing work linked to phone masts and fibre optic cables from the regulator’s scope after it was deemed lower risk.

Exemption sits within wider self-certification review

Inside Housing reported that the proposed changes to fire doors form part of a wider BSR review of self-certification.

Building work can already be self-certified and avoid checks from building inspectors if installers belong to a competent person scheme.

The BSR is reviewing the conditions of authorisation, a set of rules drawn up in 2016 that all competent person schemes must follow.

Its call for evidence covers governance and accountability, along with competence and training standards.

It also covers data reporting and enforcement.

In a statement published alongside the survey, the BSR said recent reviews had shown “persistent weaknesses” in the oversight of groups running the self-certification system.

The regulator also said it will consider how lessons from government retrofit schemes examined in the National Audit Office report from last autumn could be reflected in the conditions of authorisation.

It also referred to findings from the Competition and Markets Authority in 2023 on weak consumer understanding in the green heating and insulation sector.

Inside Housing reported that the regulator also referred to calls from the National Home Improvement Council last summer for stronger safeguards.

Consultation runs for three months

The consultation opened last Friday and will run for three months.

Government recommendations are expected before the end of the year.

Inside Housing also reported that the sector is still waiting for a formal plan to speed up remediation decisions.

Figures published this month showed decision times on these schemes had nearly halved to around 18 weeks for the most recent applications from late 2025 and early 2026.

A backlog remains.

RECOM Solutions expands passive fire team in Birmingham with new base

RECOM Solutions expands passive fire operations in Birmingham

RECOM Solutions has opened a Birmingham office for its passive fire protection division to support projects across the Midlands, the M6 corridor and the south west.

The company said the new RECOM Fire Solutions base at Fort Dunlop will support an expanding pipeline of work in those regions.

The division is led by Sarah Leadbetter.

Its management team has grown from nine to 18 people in just over a year.

Around 60 operatives are currently working on projects across the country.

The division carries out work in live environments for clients in education, healthcare, residential, defence and facilities management.

Services include compartmentation surveys and fire door condition surveys along with fire stopping remediation and fire curtain installations.

Division outlines growth plans following expansion

Leadbetter said: “Our new office underpins our ambitious plans for the division and gives us a strong Midlands presence in line with our growth.

“It will support our work across the region, along the M6 corridor and in the south west.

“Passive fire protection plays a critical role in helping organisations safeguard their people, property and operations.

RECOM has its headquarters in Salford Quays.

Trail Group wins two-year passive fire safety deal

Passive fire safety contract awarded for Home Group homes

Trail Group has been awarded a contract worth around £3m over the next two years to provide passive fire safety services for Home Group across the Southeast and Southwest of England.

Trail Group announced that the contract was awarded through the Pretium Building and Fire Safety Framework for works covering fire door installations and replacements, fire compartmentation and fire stopping.

The company was first appointed as a supply chain partner to Home Group in 2021.

It has since worked on more than 100 properties including residential apartment buildings, street properties and community wellbeing homes in Norfolk, London and the Home Counties, along with locations across the South Coast from Hampshire to Devon and Cornwall.

The first projects under the new contract are due to take place at two residential buildings in Portsmouth.

Those works will cover roof compartmentation and fire door replacements.

Passive fire safety works already completed

Trail Group said recent projects for Home Group included work at Olympic Way in High Wycombe, where fire doors, fire stopping and fire compartmentation were carried out across three apartment buildings.

In the largest building at Olympic Way, all automated smoke vents were also replaced.

At Deck Place in Colchester, all fire doors for two apartment blocks were renewed.

At Court Place in Folkestone, communal doors and entrance doors to more than 50 flats for over-55s were replaced.

Full fire compartmentation was also installed throughout the Folkestone building, including in the loft area.

FDIS becomes first UK scheme with UKAS fire door inspector accreditation

FDIS gains UKAS accreditation

FDIS has become the first organisation in the UK to receive UKAS accreditation for certifying fire door inspectors under BS EN ISO/IEC 17024:2012.

FDIS, owner of the Fire Door Inspection Scheme, confirmed the accreditation relates to certification of individuals and is intended to demonstrate that inspectors meet the scope and rules defined in the FDIS Competence Person Certification Scheme standard.

The accreditation focuses on individual competence and requires periodic reassessment to maintain certification.

It comes as the Building Safety Act 2022 (BSA) and the Building Safety Regulator (BSR) place greater emphasis on demonstrable competence across the built environment.

Under the BSR framework, individuals must demonstrate the skills, knowledge, experience and behaviours required for their role.

Organisations must also evidence capability through management systems, resources and supervision.

Louise Halton, FDIS Scheme Manager, said: “The Building Safety Act and The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 are clear that individuals must be able to demonstrate the skills, knowledge, experience and behaviours required for their role.

“Fire doors are a critical life-saving component of a building, so the competence of the professionals responsible for inspecting them should not be assumed – it should be evidenced through recognised training, assessment and third-party accreditation.

“In essence, ISO/IEC 17024 ensures a person is qualified to perform a job, while ISO/IEC 17065 ensures a product, process, or service meets specific standards.

“Both standards aim to build confidence and trust through impartial, competent, and consistent third-party assessment.”

FDIS-approved inspectors are assessed through the FDIS Certificated Inspector Workbook and online activities.

The process also includes a portfolio of evidence, a practical on-site assessment in a live environment and a written examination.

Inspectors must complete annual checks including continued professional development and are reassessed every three years.

FDIS data shows remediation demand

Inspection data from 2025 shows that 72% of fire doors inspected did not meet the required standard to pass inspection.

Common issues included excessive gaps and problems with smoke sealing.

Issues relating to care and maintenance were also recorded.

FDIS reported that 70% of non-compliant fire doors required only minor remedial works.

Poor maintenance and incorrect installation were listed among the main safety concerns.

Fire doors being wedged or propped open was also identified during inspections.

Among the doors that failed inspection, hospitals, local authority and housing association buildings, and hotels and residential healthcare homes required the most remediation work.

These environments often experience high footfall and are used by more vulnerable occupants, which can increase wear on fire door assemblies and the need for regular inspection.

Changes in sector practice have also been observed since the introduction of the Golden Thread of information in building safety.

Nearly a third of FDIS-approved inspectors reported an increase in Responsible Persons carrying out due diligence when appointing a fire door inspector.

A further 59% reported rising demand for professional inspections, and 15% reported improved documentation.

Halton said: “It’s encouraging to see a growing awareness and focus on competence and documentation across the sector.

“However, to ensure fire doors continue to meet the required standard once installed, it’s vital that competent fire door inspectors, such as those approved by the FDIS, carry out fire door inspections.

“For building owners, managers and Responsible Persons this means recognising the level of competency required, proactively verifying inspector competence, keeping accurate maintenance records and quickly addressing maintenance needs.”

The accreditation places the FDIS certification scheme within the ISO/IEC 17024 framework while inspection data continues to show widespread fire door defects across inspected buildings.

Forza Doors is expanding its commercial operations in the Midlands and the North of England through new team appointments and an expanded Birmingham-based commercial team.

The move includes scaling its dedicated commercial team in Birmingham alongside three new appointments at its head office in Partridge Green, Sussex.

The Birmingham-based sales and commercial team will manage all sales enquiries across the Midlands and North.

Phil Pritchard has taken on the role of senior commercial manager for the region.

Callum Neilson has been appointed regional sales manager.

Matt Dobell has rejoined the business as regional sales manager, with responsibility for leading sales activity and developing customer and partner relationships.

Forza Doors has also introduced new roles at its Sussex head office to support internal sales, estimating and specification activity.

Ricky Thomas has been appointed head of commercial, where he will lead internal sales and estimating teams across the UK, bringing more than 20 years’ experience in commercial operations, estimating and delivery.

Anthony Kennedy has joined as specification manager, moving from architectural ironmongery company Franchi and previously Allgood.

This role represents the company’s first dedicated position focused on engagement with architects and the design community.

Founded in 2010, the manufacturer has grown from 12 employees to more than 240 staff.

The company reported a 14% increase in annual revenue in the last financial year and has invested in brand development and operational growth.
